Polycarbonate-acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC-ABS) has been treated with an aqueous solution of N -methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and ethanol (C 2 H 5 OH) under conditions that achieve a controlled level of polymer swelling. In addition, the micro-etching effect of alkaline potassium permanganate on PC-ABS was investigated using a low environmental impact binary micro-etching system. The effect of NaOH concentration, etching time, and temperature on surface roughness, morphology, wettability, and PC-ABS adhesion strength has been examined. The PC-ABS surface characteristics were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results have demonstrated that the surface morphology was altered after micro-etching, with an increase in surface roughness ( R a ) from 9.69 to 316 nm. In addition, the contact angle decreased from 92.2° to 30.1°, and the adhesion strength increased to 0.88 kN/m. The findings of this study have established an effective micro-etching process using alkaline potassium permanganate that enhances the wettability, surface roughness, and adhesion strength of the PC-ABS copolymer.
In the present study, the low pollution acidic potassium permanganate system has been used in the study of its micro-etching effect on polycarbonate-acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC-ABS). Prior to micro-etching using a N methyl pyrrolidone (NMP)-glycol butyl ether solution was used as the swelling system of PC-ABS. Reasonable swelling conditions were determined, a 2-min expansion period at a temperature of 35°C with an NMP concentration of 80%. After the swelling processes, the effects of the volume ratio of V H 2 O : V H 2 S O 4 , micro-etching temperature, and micro-etching duration on the PC-ABS surface morphology, surface roughness, surface hydrophilicity, and peel strength, have been investigated. It was finally determined that the best micro-etching effect could be obtained by reacting at V H 2 O : V H 2 S O 4 = 1:2 and a temperature of 60°C for 25 min. The surface of the PC-ABS copolymers was characterized by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that the micro-etching process changed the morphology of the PC-ABS surface and generated cavities. In addition, the surface roughness increased from the initial R a = 9.69 to R a = 197 nm. Also, the water contact angle on the PC-ABS surface decreased from 92.2° to 28.6°, and the peel strength increased to 0.98 kN/m.
