Phenolic resins are widely utilized in outdoor and structural wood-based panels; however, their high curing temperatures and brittleness have constrained their potential applications. This study developed a fast-curing phenolic resin (HPAQ/PF) with enhanced toughness and strength, achieved by incorporating a quercetin-functionalized hyperbranched polymer (HPAQ) into a phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin. The HPAQ was synthesized by grafting biomass-derived quercetin onto an amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer. The phloroglucinol structure of quercetin, in conjunction with the amino groups, significantly accelerated the curing process of the HPAQ/PF resin. Consequently, the gel time was reduced from 593 s to 274 s, while the initial and maximum curing temperatures decreased from 155.6 °C and 202.4 °C to 128.7 °C and 171.7 °C, respectively. The moisture uptake value of the HPAQ/PF resin was reduced from 28 % to 7 % compared to the PF resin. The boiling water bonding strength and debonding work of the HPAQ/PF resin were measured at 1.75 MPa and 0.780 J, respectively, which were 51 % and 105 % higher compared to the 1.16 MPa and 0.380 J of the PF resin. These improvements were attributed to the enhanced compatibility and strong interfacial interactions between HPAQ and the PF chains, as well as the unique branched structure and intramolecular cavities of HPAQ. This study presents a simple and effective approach to enhance the curing speed and toughness of phenolic resins.

Single-component blocked polyurethane (BPU) elastomers have garnered significant interest in three-dimensional (3D) printing due to their controllable reactivity, environmental friendliness, and storage stability. However, their extremely slow curing rates significantly limit practical applications. Existing 3D printing strategies primarily incorporate additional components to enhance material printability, which increases formulation complexity, fails to fundamentally address the issue of slow curing, and in some cases compromises mechanical properties. To address this challenge, we develop an ultrafast-curing BPU (UBPU) elastomer through reactivity-optimized formulation design, achieving additive-free processing. The UBPU system attains a gelation time of approximately 3.15 min at the deblocking temperature, representing a 28.6-fold faster curing rate relative to conventional BPU systems. The UBPU also demonstrates a high evaporation rate of the blocking agent. Accordingly, we propose a progressive curing-enabled extrusion printing (PCEEP) method, wherein the UBPU elastomer is preheated in extruder to further accelerate blocking agent evaporation during layer-by-layer deposition, thereby enabling the rapid stabilization of printed structures. This enhanced evaporation mechanism improves tensile strength of as-printed UBPU parts by 2-fold compared to cast-molded counterparts. Our study provides an additive-free strategy and novel insights into high-performance thermosetting polyurethane (TSPU) elastomers for advanced 3D printing applications.

In this paper, we propose a generalized concept of microfluidic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) on paper (POP) devices, which combines well the merits of paper chips and PDMS chips. First, we optimized the conditions for accurate PDMS spatial patterning on paper, based on screen printing and a high temperature enabled superfast curing technique, which enables PDMS patterning to an accuracy of tens of microns in less than ten seconds. This, in turn, makes it available for seamless, reversible and reliable integration of the resulting paper layer with other PDMS channel structures. The integrated POP devices allow for both porous paper and smooth channels to be spatially defined on the devices, greatly extending the flexibility for designers to be able to construct powerful functional structures. To demonstrate the versatility of this design, a prototype POP device for the colorimetric analysis of liver function markers, serum protein, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), was constructed. On this POP device, quantitative sample loading, mixing and multiplex analysis have all been realized.

Light-based three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting has been widely studied in tissue engineering. Despite the fact that free-radical chain polymerization-based bioinks like hyaluronic acid methacrylate (HAMA) and gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) have been extensively explored in 3D bioprinting, the thiol–ene hydrogel system has attracted increasing attention for its ability in building hydrogel scaffolds in an oxygen-tolerant and cell-friendly way. Herein, we report a superfast curing thiol–ene bioink composed of norbornene-modified hyaluronic acid (NorHA) and thiolated gelatin (GelSH) for 3D bioprinting. A new facile approach was first introduced in the synthesis of NorHA, which circumvented the cumbersome steps involved in previous works. Additionally, after mixing NorHA with macro-cross-linker GelSH, the customized NorHA/GelSH bioinks exhibited fascinating superiorities over the gold standard GelMA bioinks, such as an ultrafast curing rate (1–5 s), much lowered photoinitiator concentration (0.03% w/v), and flexible physical performances. Moreover, the NorHA/GelSH hydrogel greatly avoided excess ROS generation, which is important for the survival of the encapsulated cells. Last, compared with the GelMA scaffold, the 3D-printed NorHA/GelSH scaffold not only exhibited excellent cell viability but also guaranteed cell proliferation, revealing its superior bioactivity. In conclusion, the NorHA/GelSH system is a promising candidate for 3D bioprinting and tissue engineering applications.
