Salt-welding strategy for the design of repairable impact-resistant and wear-resistant hydrogels

Jiangpeng Jia,Shan Lu,Shurui Sun,Yijie Jin,Liguo Qin,Chuanzhuang Zhao

Self-healing hydrogels can autonomously repair damage, enhancing their performance stability and broadening their applications as soft devices. Although the incorporation of dynamic interactions enhances self-healing capabilities, it simultaneously weakens the hydrogels’ strength. External stimuli such as heating, while accelerating the healing process, may also lead to dehydration. Developing a stable repair strategy that combines rapid healing and high mechanical strength is challenging. Here, we introduce “salt-welding” for high-strength hydrogels with rapid room temperature self-healing. This is achieved through dynamic borate ester bonds in a salt-responsive poly(methacrylamide) hydrogel. The process involves “salt-fusion” to convert fractures into a viscous liquid for swift healing, followed by “salt-concretion” to toughen the hydrogel. The hydrogels achieve a posthealing strength of 23 megapascals in 95 minutes at room temperature, with near 100% healing efficiency. Leveraging their tunable mechanical strength and rapid healing rate, the hydrogel can be tailored for applications as a reparable wear-resistant material and damping device.

Self-healing epoxy with a fast and stable extrinsic healing system based on BF3–amine complex

Yi Xi Song,Xiao Ji Ye,Min Zhi Rong,Ming Qiu Zhang

To avoid the high corrosiveness of the fast-healing epoxy system previously developed by our lab, which contains a strong Lewis acid or Brønsted acid, we introduced a much less corrosive BF3–amine complex (50% boron trifluoride–2,4-dimethylaniline in 1,4-butanediol) as a replacement. The new hardener was successfully synthesized, encapsulated in silica hollow microcapsules, and embedded in an epoxy matrix with a microencapsulated cycloaliphatic epoxy monomer. Impact tests indicated that the healing system worked as expected. The self-healing epoxy composite can regain its strength within seconds at room temperature, and its self-healability remained stable after 4 months of storage. The high cationic polymerization reactivity of the cycloaliphatic epoxy accounts for the rapid restoration. It is believed that the present work represents an important step towards practical usage of the fast extrinsic self-healing strategy.

Experimental Study of Sulfoaluminate Cement-Based Rapid Repair Mortar Undergoing Hot/Wet Harsh Conditions: Mechanical Strengths, Hydration Products, and Ettringite Evolution Mechanism

Xiangshan Hou,Jingwei Li,Jianwei Xu,Xin Xiao,Jianyong Wang,Yanhui Liu,Mona Ossman,Fawei Lin,Xujiang Wang,Yuzhong Li,Wenlong Wang

Rapid repair mortar (RRM) is widely used to repair infrastructures, which must achieve high early strength and long-term service. This study investigated the influence of hot/wet harsh environmental conditions on RRM prepared using solid-waste-based sulfoaluminate cement (WSAC). Orthogonal experiments were conducted to obtain the optimized WSAC-based RRM. Then, the impact of simulated harsh conditions (cross-combination of 20/60 °C and 10/40/90%RH humidity) on RRM and synthetic ettringite was studied. High temperature and low humidity restrained the volume deformation and promoted the growth of the later-age compressive strength of the RRM, but reduced the flexural strength. In this case, ettringite lost some water molecules in the Ca–H2O groups and transformed into amorphous meta-ettringite, which retained its needle-rod morphology. A small amount of ettringite decomposed into gypsum, AH3, and Ca(OH)2 under high-humidity conditions, which caused a slight expansion and reduced the compressive strength of the RRM. Fortunately, most ettringite was well protected by the dense RRM matrix, and harsh temperature and humidity conditions could only slowly promote the transformation of ettringite in RRM over a long period. Therefore, short-term rain or hot weather has little effect on the mechanical properties of WSAC-based RRM. This study provides a theoretical basis and data support for the promotion of industrialization of WSAC-based RRM, which is in line with the concept of green and sustainable development.

Mechanistic understanding of strength and microstructural evolution of in-situ polymerization modified cement pastes

Lijing Shao,Xin Liu,Pan Feng,Qi Liu,Chen Chen,Yi Zhang,Zhenqi Yu,Zhengyao Qu

In-situ polymerization has garnered significant attention due to its remarkable ability to enhance the toughness of cement-based materials. Beyond exploring the beneficial effects of in-situ polymerization, understanding how strength evolves in modified materials is essential for practical applications. In this study, we investigate the strength evolution of in-situ polymerization-modified cement pastes from the fresh state to later ages, elucidating the underlying mechanisms through analyses of heat release, hydration products, and microstructural changes. Experimental results reveal that in-situ polymerization with monomer contents of 1 %, 3 %, and 5 % enhances the flexural strength at 56d by 4.34 %, 42.89 %, and 81.03 %, respectively, compared to plain cement pastes. Strength evolution from fresh state to later age further reveals a four-stage development process in polymer modified cement that differs from conventional cement hydration. These stages are driven sequentially by monomer adsorption, polymerization, cement hydration, and prolonged late-age hydration. These insights provide critical guidance for optimizing casting and demolding processes while expanding applications in 3D printing and rapid repair materials.
