Stable structure and fast ion diffusion: N-doped VO2 3D porous nanoflowers for applications in ultrafast rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Kunyu Hao,Zhuwei Sheng,Pengcheng Qi,Yu Lu,Gaofu Liu,Mingyue Chen,Hao Wu,Yiwen Tang

Aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ARZIBs) are promising candidates for fast-charging energy-storage systems. The issues of stronger interactions between Zn 2+ and the cathode for ultrafast ARZIBs can be partially addressed by enhancing mass transfer and ion diffusion of the cathode. Herein, via thermal oxidation for the first time, N -doped VO 2 porous nanoflowers with short ion diffusion paths and improved electrical conductivity were synthesized as ARZIBs cathode materials . The introduction of nitrogen derived from the vanadium-based-zeolite imidazolyl framework (V-ZIF) contributes to enhanced electrical conductivity and faster ion diffusion, while the thermal oxidation of the VS 2 precursor assists the final product in exhibiting a more stable three-dimensional nanoflower structure. In particular, the N -doped VO 2 cathode shows excellent cycle stability and superior rate capability with the delivered capacities of 165.02 mAh g −1 and 85 mAh g −1 , at 10 A g −1 and 30 A g −1 , and the capacity retention of 91.4% after 2200 cycles and 99% after 9000 cycles, respectively. Remarkably, the battery takes less than 10 s to be fully charged at 30 A g −1 . Hence, this work provides a new avenue for designing unique nanostructured vanadium oxides and developing electrode materials suitable for ultrafast charging.

Mg2Nb34O87 Porous Microspheres for Use in High-Energy, Safe, Fast-Charging, and Stable Lithium-Ion Batteries

Xiangzhen Zhu,Qingfeng Fu,Lingfei Tang,Chunfu Lin,Jian Xu,Guisheng Liang,Renjie Li,Lijie Luo,Yongjun Chen

M–Nb–O compounds are advanced anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high specific capacities, safe operating potentials, and high cycling stability. Nevertheless, the found M–Nb–O anode materials are very limited. Here, Mg2Nb34O87 is developed as a new M–Nb–O material. Mg2Nb34O87 porous microspheres (Mg2Nb34O87-P) with primary-particle sizes of 30–100 nm are fabricated based on a solvothermal method. Mg2Nb34O87 has an open 3 × 4 × ∞ Wadsley–Roth shear structure and a large unit-cell volume, leading to its largest Li+ diffusion coefficients among all the developed M–Nb–O anode materials. In situ X-ray diffraction analyses reveal its high structural stability and intercalating characteristic. These architectural, conductivity, and structural advantages in Mg2Nb34O87-P lead to its most significant intercalation pseudocapacitive contribution (87.7% at 1.1 mV s–1) among the existing M–Nb–O anode materials and prominent rate capability (high reversible capacities of 338 mAh g–1 at 0.1C and 230 mAh g–1 at 10C). Additionally, this new material exhibits a safe operating potential (∼1.68 V), an ultrahigh initial Coulombic efficiency (94.8%), and an outstanding cycling stability (only 6.9% capacity loss at 10C over 500 cycles). All of these evidences indicate that Mg2Nb34O87-P is an ideal anode material for high-energy, safe, fast-charging, and stable LIBs.

Reversible Li plating regulation on graphite anode through a barium sulfate nanofibers-based dielectric separator for fast charging and high-safety lithium-ion battery

Yaxin Zhang,Long Cheng,Ying-Jie Zhu,Jin Wu,Han-Ping Yu,Sida Xie,Dandan Li,Zhaohui Wang,Heng Li

Poor Li plating reversibility and high thermal runaway risks are key challenges for fast charging lithium-ion batteries with graphite anodes. Herein, a dielectric and fire-resistant separator based on hybrid nanofibers of barium sulfate (BS) and bacterial cellulose (BC) is developed to synchronously enhance the battery’s fast charging and thermal-safety performances. The regulation mechanism of the dielectric BS/BC separator in enhancing the Li + ion transport and Li plating reversibility is revealed. (1) The Max-Wagner polarization electric field of the dielectric BS/BC separator can accelerate the desolvation of solvated Li + ions, enhancing their transport kinetics. (2) Moreover, due to the charge balancing effect, the dielectric BS/BC separator homogenizes the electric field/Li + ion flux at the graphite anode-separator interface, facilitating uniform Li plating and suppressing Li dendrite growth. Consequently, the fast-charge graphite anode with the BS/BC separator shows higher Coulombic efficiency (99.0% vs. 96.9%) and longer cycling lifespan (100 cycles vs. 59 cycles) than that with the polypropylene (PP) separator in the constant-lithiation cycling test at 2  mA cm −2 . The high-loading LiFePO 4 (15.5  mg cm −2 )//graphite (7.5  mg cm −2 ) full cell with the BS/BC separator exhibits excellent fast charging performance, retaining 70% of its capacity after 500 cycles at a high rate of 2C, which is significantly better than that of the cell with the PP separator (retaining only 27% of its capacity after 500 cycles). More importantly, the thermally stable BS/BC separator effectively elevates the critical temperature and reduces the heat release rate during thermal runaway, thereby significantly enhancing the battery’s safety.

Layered Cathode with Ultralow Strain Empowers Rapid-Charging and Slow-Discharging Capability in Sodium Ion Battery

Maolin Yang,Ziwei Chen,Zhongyuan Huang,Rui Wang,Wenhai Ji,Dong Zhou,Tao Zeng,Yongsheng Li,Jun Wang,Liguang Wang,Tingting Yang,Yinguo Xiao

The development of the electric vehicle industry has spurred demand for secondary batteries capable of rapid-charging and slow-discharging. Among them, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with layered oxide as the cathode exhibit competitive advantages due to their comprehensive electrochemical performance. However, to meet the requirements of rapid-charging and slow-discharging scenarios, it is necessary to further enhance the rate performance of the cathode material to achieve symmetrical capacity at different rates. Simultaneously, minimizing lattice strain during asymmetric electrochemical processes is also significant in alleviating strain accumulation. In this study, the ordered distribution of transition metal layers and the diffusion pathway of sodium ions are optimized through targeted K-doping of sodium layers, leading to a reduction of the diffusion barrier and endowment of prominent rate performance. At a 20C rate, the capacity of the cathode can reach 94% of that at a 0.1C rate. Additionally, the rivet effect of the sodium layers resulted in a global volume strain of only 0.03% for the modified cathode during charging at a 10C rate and discharging at a 1C rate. In summary, high-performance SIBs, with promising prospects for rapid-charging and slow-discharging capability, are obtained through the regulation of sodium layers, opening up new avenues for commercial applications.

Enhanced Fast-Charging Capability in Spinel LiMn2O4 via K+ Ion Stabilization for Advanced Lithium-Ion Batteries

Shiqiang Zhong,Jingwei Liu,Yongcong Huang,Yulin Cao,Feng Wu,Xuhui Li,Dawei Luo,Zhouguang Lu,Hua Cheng

Spinel LiMn2O4 (LMO) is a promising fast-charging cathode material because its unique three-dimensional Li-ion diffusion channels offer favorable ionic diffusivity. However, LMO encounters rapid structural degradation at high current densities. To tackle this issue, we introduce K+ ions into the interstitial 16c sites to stabilize LMO, thereby achieving excellent fast-charging capability. The K-LMO retains 75% of its theoretical capacity at an ultrahigh current density of 1.48 A g–1 (10 C, corresponding to a charging time of 5 min). Comprehensive characterizations demonstrate that the incorporation of K+ into LMO expands the LiO4 space, strengthens the Mn–O bonds and suppresses the Jahn–Teller effect, leading to improved Li-ion mobility and enhanced stability of the diffusion channels. Additionally, the volume variation induced by cycling under a high charge state is efficiently suppressed through a solid-solution transition, thus preventing structural degradation against long-term cycling. Given this, this study presents an attractive candidate material for the cathode of fast-charging lithium-ion batteries.

Design of a niobium tungsten oxide/C micro-structured electrode for fast charging lithium-ion batteries

Weiwei Liu,Meng Xu,Menghua Zhu

Maximum energy storage in minimum charging time is increasingly important to evaluate the performance of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). High rate electrode materials require high ion and electron transport ability. Niobium tungsten oxides as emerging materials are employed as anodes for LIBs and show desirable rate performance owing to their high Li+ diffusion coefficients. However, most studies focus on the preparation and performance of niobium tungsten oxides at the nanoscale while electrode materials in micro grade result in high tap density and smaller electrode thickness with a shorter electron pathway under the same mass loading. Herein, Nb18W16O93/C spheres in micro grade with a carbon layer coating on Nb18W16O93 nanograins are synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. Owing to the enhanced electronic conductivity and protection of structural integrity by the carbon layer, the Nb18W16O93/C anode exhibits excellent rate performance with 182.8 mA h g−1 at a high rate of 5C with a capacity retention of 81% (based on 225.7 mA h g−1 at 0.2C). In addition, superior cycling stability is shown with a capacity retention of 85.6% at 1C after 100 cycles and 68% at 5C after 300 cycles. This stable anode material with advanced rate capability shows huge competitiveness as a candidate for fast charging materials of LIBs.

Inhibiting Dendrite Growth via Regulating the Electrified Interface for Fast-Charging Lithium Metal Anode

Xinyang Wang,Ming Chen,Siyuan Li,Chang Zhao,Weidong Zhang,Zeyu Shen,Yi He,Guang Feng,Yingying Lu

Extreme fast charging (XFC), with a recharging time of 15 min, is the key to the mainstream adoption of battery electric vehicles. Lithium metal, in the meantime, has re-emerged as the ultimate anode because of its ultrahigh specific capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, the low lithium-ion concentration near the lithium electrode surface can result in uncontrolled dendrite growth aggravated by high plating current densities. Here, we reveal the beneficial effects of an adaptively enhanced internal electric field in a constant voltage charging mode in XFC via a molecular understanding of the electrolyte–electrode interfaces. With the same charging time and capacity, the increased electric field stress in dozens of millivolts, compared with that in a constant current mode, can facilitate Li+ migrating toward the negatively charged lithium electrode, mitigating Li+ depletion at the interface and thereby suppressing dendrites. In addition, more NO3– ions are involved in the solvation sheath that is constructed on the lithium electrode surface, leading to the nitride-enriched solid electrolyte interphase and thus favoring lower barriers for Li+ transport. On the basis of these merits, the Li||Li4Ti5O12 battery runs steadily for 550 cycles with charging current peaks up to 27 mA cm–2, and the Li||S full cells exhibit extended life-spans charged within 12 min.

Microporous Cyclodextrin Film with Funnel-type Channel Polymerized on Electrospun Cellulose Acetate Membrane as Separators for Strong Trapping Polysulfides and Boosting Charging in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Shuanglin Wu,Jiayi Shi,Xiaolin Nie,Yingmei Yao,Feng Jiang,Qufu Wei,Fenglin Huang

The “shuttle effect” of polysulfides hampers the commercialization of lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Here, a thin molecular sieve film was decorated on the surface of an electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) membrane derived from recycled cigarette filters, where the truncated cone structure β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) was selected as the building block to physically block and chemically trap polysulfides while simultaneously dramatically speeding up ion transport. Furthermore, on the β-CD free side of the separator facing the cathode, graphite carbon (C) was sputtered as an upper current collector, which barely increases the thickness. These benefits result in an initial discharge performance of 1378.24 mAh g −1 and long-term cycling stability of 863.78 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 0.2 C for the battery with the β-CD/CA/C separator, which is more than three times that of the PP separator after 500 cycles. Surprisingly, the funnel-type channel of β-CD generates a differential ionic fluid pressure on both sides, speeding up ion transport by up to 69%, and a 65.3% faster charging rate of 9484 mA g −1 was achieved. The “funnel effect” of a separator is regarded as a novel and high-efficiency solution for fast charging of Li-S and other lithium secondary batteries.

Free-Standing, Binder-Free Titania/Super-Aligned Carbon Nanotube Anodes for Flexible and Fast-Charging Li-Ion Batteries

Kunlei Zhu,Yufeng Luo,Fei Zhao,Jiwei Hou,Xuewen Wang,He Ma,Hui Wu,Yuegang Zhang,Kaili Jiang,Shoushan Fan,Jiaping Wang,Kai Liu

Flexible and durable electrode materials are of vital importance to developing advanced energy storage devices for emerging wearable electronics. Most current strategies adopt chemical modifications or chemical binders to improve the interface interaction between flexible components, which inevitably lowers the cyclic lifetime and increases the production cost. Here, we report an in situ, scalable sol–gel method to fabricate free-standing TiO2/superaligned carbon nanotube (SACNT) hybrid films as flexible anodes in Li-ion batteries. The natural and desirable wettability between TiO2 and SACNTs makes any chemical modifications or chemical binders unnecessary in the fabrication process, delivering a clean TiO2–SACNT interface. The as-prepared TiO2/SACNT anodes not only inherit the high flexibility of the SACNT framework but also enhance rate capability and charge/discharge reversibility with its pseudocapacitive storage mechanism. These anodes exhibit a high capability and a long cyclic lifetime (over 1000 cycles at 60 C) in half cells. They are further assembled to make flexible full cells, where binders, conductive agents, and current collectors are all unnecessary. The capacity decay of a full-cell test is almost negligible over 500 cycles of bending with a fast charging rate within 50 s, suggesting TiO2/SACNT films to be a promising material for flexible storage devices.

Molten salt synthesis of submicron NiNb2O6 anode material with ultra-high rate performance for lithium-ion batteries

Shuo Zhao,Jiabiao Lian,Shan Zhang,Yingxue Cui,Guochun Li,Yong Wang,Huaming Li

Niobium-based oxides as lithium-ion battery anode materials have attracted much attention due to their excellent fast-charging capability. However, the solid-phase synthesis of niobates often involves harsh reaction conditions, especially high temperature over 1100 °C. Herein, a molten salt method is proposed to synthesize NiNb 2 O 6 submicron particles, with synthetic temperature of 900 °C, gram-scale production and high reaction yield of 96.6%. Remarkably, NiNb 2 O 6 at the sub-micron scale shows superior electrochemical performance compared to the micron and nano scale sizes, i.e., reversible capacity of 320.9 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 2.0 A g −1 (≈8.5C) and high capacity retention of 85.8% over 5000 cycles at 20 A g −1 (≈85C), mainly arising from the pseudo-capacitance electrochemical behavior and stable structure of material during repeated cycles. Moreover, the assembled NiNb 2 O 6 ||LiFePO 4 full cell can retain 89.3% capacity after 800 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 . This work offers a simple and efficient method for preparing NiNb 2 O 6 submicron particles as anode material for fast -charging lithium-ion batteries.

Boosting Fast-Charging Capability of High-Voltage Li Metal Batteries with Ionic Liquid Modified Ethereal Electrolyte

Kai Ding,Elijah J. Begin,Shouyi Yuan,Mingyang Zhong,Yang Wang,Yingjie Zhang,Xiaoyuan Zeng,Junwei Lucas Bao,Yonggang Wang

Given the high compatibility with Li metal anodes, ethereal electrolytes have found widespread use in Li metal batteries. Unfortunately, their applications in high-voltage Li metal batteries are hampered by a limited electrochemical window. In this study, a diluted ethereal electrolyte (with Li salt concentration < 1.5 m ) is developed containing 1 m lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl) imide (FSI) and 0.3 m LiNO 3 in a N -methyl- N -propylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PP13TFSI):dimethyl ether (DME) (v:v = 1:4) mixture for Li metal batteries with an aggressive high-voltage cathode via the formation of an anion-enriched solvation sheath. In contrast to high-concentration electrolytes, the formation of the anion-enriched solvation sheath in this design is facilitated by the addition of ionic liquids. Further theoretical calculations indicate that the presence of FSI − and NO 3 − anions in the first solvation sheath weakens the desolvation energy of the DME solvent, suggesting a faster desolvation process at the electrode interphase. Consequently, the designed electrolyte enables long-term cycling of Li || LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 (NCM811) full cells over 1000 cycles at a high rate of 10 C. More notably, it also allows for a long cycle life of 100 cycles under a high rate of 5 C, even with limited negative capacity to positive capacity (N/P) ratio of 1.

Superior fast-charging Ni-rich cathode via promoted kinetic-mechanical performance

Yu Tang,Zhiyong Huang,Wei Wang,Yali Wen,Shuoxiao Zhang,Xi Chen,Zhibo Zhang,Zijia Yin,Tingting Yang,Tianyi Li,Leighanne C. Gallington,He Zhu,Si Lan,Steven Wang,Yang Ren,Zhenduo Wu,Qi Liu

The sluggish Li-ion kinetics restrict the rapid charging capabilities and contribute to the structural deterioration of Ni-rich cathode materials . Notably, crack propagation during repeated charging cycles deteriorates the electrochemical stability, which hinders the further development of high-energy-density batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). In this paper, we proposed a simple yet effective method to enhance the Li-ion diffusion and mechanical properties of Ni-rich cathodes via straightforward Zr doping. In-situ high-rate XRD reveals that the detrimental uneven delithiation under the fast-charging process has been largely alleviated. Particularly, a robust structure with higher modulus and fracture strength is constructed owing to the higher Zr-O bond. By mitigating the kinetic hindrance and increasing the particle’s stiffness, the proposed Ni-rich cathode shows an impressive 97.6 % capacity retention under a 5 C rate current. This work provides a facile and efficient strategy for large-scale production of fast-charging Ni-rich cathode materials.
