This study proposed a method for the rapid fabrication of paper-based microfluidic devices with a stencil film, which has wide application potential in analytical chemistry. Compared with the conventional approaches, the wax transfer and wax reflow was conducted simultaneously, resulting in a shorter fabrication duration (about 15 s per device) and ultra-low fabrication cost. For the demonstration of the proposed method, a quantitative analysis of amino acid content in tea was also conducted.

The capability of fabricating magnetically active 3D microstructures is crucial for miniaturization of microrobots or microactuators. While additive manufacturing using magnetic nanoparticle-infused polymer resin offers the highly desirable precision and flexibility, the difficulty in handling resin with higher solid loading of magnetic nanoparticles needed to maximize the magnetic actuation forces remains to be the main obstacle. The increased viscosity of the magnetic resin not only significantly reduces the fabrication speed, but also makes the process vulnerable to the precipitation of the suspended magnetic nanoparticles. Herein, a comprehensive solution that synergizes the optimization of magnetic photopolymerizable resin and the high-speed 3D printing using microcontinuous liquid interface production (μCLIP) process is reported. An optimized magnetic photopolymerizable resin with 30 wt% solid loading of Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles is well dispersed over 72 h. Process characteristics of the magnetic photopolymerizable resins with variation in the solid loading of magnetic nanoparticles are investigated experimentally. The capability of 3D printing centimeter-size samples with sub-75 μm fine features using high solid loading (30 wt%) is also demonstrated. The increased printing speed using μCLIP significantly reduces the fabrication time to the order of minutes to hours, making the process more robust against the precipitation of the magnetic particles.

Multi-material objects offer enhanced functionality by strategic integration of different materials, allowing tailored properties to meet specific performance requirements. Digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing, featuring high resolution and fast speed, has emerged as a leading method for creating single-material structures. However, it faces significant limitations when producing multi-material objects in the traditional layer-by-layer matter, as the approach requires frequent material switching, making the process prohibitively time-consuming. To address this challenge, we present a capillarity assisted multi-material 3D printing (CMM-3DP) method that leverages capillary pressure to generate multi-material objects block by block. This innovative approach achieves printing speeds with over a hundred times faster than the current multi-material DLP 3D printing. CMM-3DP demonstrates remarkable versatility, accommodating not only photosensitive materials such as hydrogels, polymers, and elastomers but also thermal curable resins and liquid metals—materials previously incompatible with conventional DLP 3D printing. By eliminating the layer-by-layer material switching process, CMM-3DP allows multi-material objects to be fabricated while avoiding both intricate motion system and resin contamination issue. Using a body centered cubic (BCC) array as the capillary structure, our research demonstrates that CMM-3DP can successfully create multi-material architectures ranging from micrometer to centimeter scale. Moreover, the versatility of CMM-3DP is validated by successful fabrication of various applications, including stimuli-responsive objects, flexible actuator, electric circuit, and biomimetic human hand. Our method substantially enhances the multi-material fabrication capability of DLP 3D printing, facilitating potential applications with multi-material devices.

The rapid proliferation of portable smart electronics has significantly expanded the demand for flexible energy storage devices. Flexible supercapacitor (FSC), characterized by long lifetime, high power density, and portability, is an ideal power source for smart electronics. However, key challenges remain in developing robust, sustainable, and cost-effective electrode substrates and achieving rapid fabrication of FSCs with tailored electrode patterns. Herein, a mechanically strong wood-derived film is applied as the flexible substrate for stamping of Ti 3 C 2 T x inks to readily construct a high-performance in-plane FSC. The wood-derived film with a dense layered structure, high crystallinity, and fiber-oriented characteristics is prepared from natural vertical-section wood via cell wall softening engineering in combination with densification treatment, which exhibits excellent mechanical performance, flexibility, and foldability. By direct stamping Ti 3 C 2 T x inks on wood-derived film surface followed by drying, a flexible interdigitated electrode with stable electrical conductivity is achieved, enabling the rapid manufacturing of in-plane FSC. The developed FSC delivers favorable areal capacitance of 57.8 mF·cm −2 at 0.2 mA·cm −2 , and high energy density of 2.89 μWh·cm −2 at 60 μW·cm −2 . Furthermore, the FSC maintains stable capacitive behavior in the flexural state or after cyclic bending. Collectively, the integration of wood-derived film with Ti 3 C 2 T x inks for producing FSC via a stamping approach offers a sustainable strategy for the rapid manufacture of portable energy storage devices.

In this study, a fast, low-cost, and facile spray method was proposed. This method deposits highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on the paper-microfluidic scheme. The procedures for substrate preparation were studied including different strategies to synthesize AgNPs and the optimization of spray cycles. In addition, the morphologies of the different kinds of paper substrates were characterized by SEM and investigated by their SERS signals. The established method was found to be favorable for obtaining good sensitivity and reproducible results. The RSDs of Raman intensity of randomly analyzing 20 spots on the same paper or different filter papers depositing AgNPs are both below 15%. The SERS enhancement factor is approximately 2 × 10 7 . The whole fabrication is very rapid, robust, and does not require specific instruments. Furthermore, the total cost for 1000 pieces of chip is less than $20. These advantages demonstrated the potential for growing SERS applications in the area of environmental monitoring, food safety, and bioanalysis in the future.
