Phenolic resins (PRs) find extensive use in adhesives and constructions, but they suffer from low curing rate and high brittleness. Herein, we drew inspiration from the lobster sclerotization process and proposed a simple approach to fabricate PRs by integrating pyrogallol-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (PG@GnPs), amine-terminated hyperbranched phosphonitrilic chloride trimer (HPNC), and phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin. The resulting PRs exhibited significant improvements in comprehensive performance. The onset curing temperature decreased from 115.6 to 101.7°C, while the adhesion work increased by 126.5% and the toughness increased by 494%. Additionally, the wet bonding strength increased by 68.7% and the flexural strength increased by 208%. The accelerated curing rate was attributable to the oxidative crosslinking between catechol moieties in pyrogallol and amino groups in HPNC under alkaline conditions, as well as the high reactivity between pyrogallol or amino groups and PF chains. The outstanding mechanical properties were resulted from the synergistic enhancement effects of PG@GnPs and HPNC, which effectively transferred and absorbed energy upon loading. Overall, this work presented an attractive design strategy for developing high-performance and multifunctional polymer composites. Highlights A bioinspired strategy was proposed for preparing advanced phenolic resins. PG@GnPs were produced via a green and low-cost ball milling method. Adhesion work and toughness increased by 126.5% and 494%, respectively. Bonding and flexural strength have improved by 68.7% and 208%, respectively. Significantly accelerated curing rate was achieved.

Pyrochlore-based glass-ceramics are attracting attention as a promising host material for immobilizing minor actinide in high-level wastes. However, the loading capacity of pyrochlore-based materials for actinide elements is to be improved, and only conventional synthetic approaches of powder sintering and glassy bulk crystallization were reported. Here, new (La,Y) 2 (Zr,Ti) 2 O 7 pyrochlore-based glass-ceramics were subtly designed and successfully prepared through a rapid melting and solidification process. The solidification behavior of samples with different cooling rates was investigated, the dense and crack-free (La,Y) 2 (Zr,Ti) 2 O 7 pyrochlore-based glass-ceramics were prepared at the cooling rate of 500 °C/s (within 1.5 s). The present amorphous La 2 O 3 -TiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 phase demonstrates the outstanding thermal stability compared with the currently used borosilicate glass for high-level waste immobilization due to the lack of conventional glass-forming components. The results show the great feasibility of this novel synthesis route for glass-ceramics by direct solidification and its good potential for immobilizing high-level wastes.

How to realize fast and strong underwater adhesion has gained much attention recently. Although some mussel-inspired adhesives that can be cured underwater have been reported, reports on underwater adhesion with both high bonding strength and rapid curing capability are still rare. Furthermore, organic solvents are generally utilized in these adhesives, which are eco-unfriendly. Here, by taking advantages of the strong underwater adhesion capability of catecholic groups in mussel adhesion proteins (MAPs) and the fast curing capability of polyurethane (PU) prepolymer, a facile yet powerful strategy towards a fast-curing mussel-inspired underwater adhesive is reported. The biomimetic adhesive, PUP-PPG-DBHP, is a liquid composed of isocyanate-terminated polypropylene glycol (PPG) and isocyanate-terminated dopamine bis(hydroxymethyl)propionate (DBHP), which can be directly applied underwater without solvent dilution and reach an average bonding strength around 1.2 MPa at a curing time of only around 30 s on glass substrates. Meanwhile, underwater curing process of PUP-PPG-DBHP shows good tolerance toward pH value, ionic strength, and temperature change. Such an engineering adhesive opens an innovative and facile route to a feasible solution for underwater engineering field.

Similar to the 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (DOPA) structures in mussel adhesive proteins (MAPs), tannin contains abundant similar catechol structures in the flavonoid units, which might be developed into high-performance adhesives. In this study, Acacia mangium tannin (AMT) was depolymerized under acidic conditions with 2-methylfuran as a nucleophilic reagent. The depolymerized tannin (DAMT) was combined with polyethyleneimine (PEI) to prepare tannin-based phenolic resins to mimic the MAP systems. The investigation of the chemical structures of tannin indicated the successful reaction of 2-methylfuran onto the flavonoid units to increase the chemical reactivity, as evidenced by the MALDI-TOF-MS, GPC, 1 H NMR, and FT-IR analyses. The as-prepared PEI and DAMT-modified phenolic (DTPF-PEI) resin showed a high cross-linking and three-dimensional network, resulting from the high reactivity of DAMT. Complex reactions were observed during the curing of the as-prepared resin, including Michael addition and/or Schiff base formation reactions between the amino groups of PEI and the ortho-quinone of tannins, as well as the condensation reactions between PEI and the phenolic resins. Compared with tannin-phenol-formaldehyde (TPF) resin, the gel time of the DTPF-PEI resin decreased from 630 s to 204 s (decreased by 67.6%), the mass loss after hydrolysis decreased by 26.3%, the bonding strength increased by 63.6% when cured at 135 °C, and the formaldehyde emission decreased by 64.4%. Such high performance might be contributed by the formation of highly cross-linked networks, as well as the hydrogen bonding and pi-cation interactions between the catechol structures and the adhered surfaces. With its outstanding performance, including fast curing rate, excellent adhesion properties, low formaldehyde emission, and high thermal stability, this newly developed adhesive has the potential to be used as an alternative of conventional phenol-formaldehyde resins.

The objective of this research was to provide a useful approach of polymer synthesis for accelerating the fast cure of phenol-urea-formaldehyde (PUF) resin as wood adhesive by optimizing its structure and composition. The PUF resins containing high contents of very reactive groups such aspara-methylol groups were synthesized by reacting methylolurea, phenol, and formaldehyde in the presence of magnesium oxide (MgO) as catalyst. The effects of synthesis parameters including F/(P + U), OH/P, and MgO/P mole ratios on the structure, composition, curing characteristics, and their relationships of PUF resins were investigated. The results indicated that MgO seemed to be an efficacious catalyst for PUF resin synthesis and promote its faster cure. The increase in the F/(P + U) mole ratio or/and OH/P mole ratio appeared to be beneficial for the formation ofpara-methylol groups and cocondensed methylene linkages between phenolic methylol groups and urea units, and for the removal of unreacted urea. In case of Catalyst/P mole ratio, an appropriate dosage of added metal-ion was very important for synthesizing the high-content reactive groups of PUF resins, otherwise leading to the reverse effects.Keywords:phenol-urea-formaldehyde resin;catalyst;synthesis;chemical structure;high-content reactive group;fast cure

UV-curable silicone pressure-sensitive adhesive (SPSA) is composed of silicone rubber and silicone resin. Generally, the C C double bond in acryloyloxy group provides a photocurable group for SPSA. However, oxygen inhibition of acryloyloxy group block the degree of cure and C C double bond conversion of SPSA during the photopolymerization . Therefore, efficient photocurable groups for UV curing SPSA is particularly important to be developed. Thiol-ene click polymerizations have been widely used in photocrosslinked polymers due to the rapid efficiency of reactions. In this study, sulfhydryl functionalized silicone resin (SFSR) and methacrylate functionalized amino silicone rubber (MFASR) were synthesized to prepare a SPSA via photoinitiated thiol-ene click polymerization. The double bond in MSASR and sulfhydryl in SFSR were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and 1 H NMR spectroscopy . The double bond conversion of SPSA was calculated after polymerization. The cohesion of SPSA was improved by SFSR, while the crosslinking degree was improved by thiol-ene. The loop tack of SPSA with 50 wt% SFSR was 9.01 N, and the 180° peel strength was 11.37 N/25 mm. The SPSA maintained good bonding adhesion to steel at various temperature.

Dental pulp vitality is extremely important for the tooth viability, since it provides nutrition and forms the dentin. Bioactive glasses (BGs) may be promising materials for pulp repair due to their excellent abilities of rapidly bonding to bone and stimulating new bone growth. However, the unsatisfied handling property, low plasticity, and poor rapid-setting property of traditional BGs limit its application in vital pulp therapy. Spherical bioactive glasses (SBGs) exhibited higher osteogenesis and odontogenic differentiation than irregular BGs. This study focuses on the application of SBGs with rapid setting property for dental pulp repair. Here, SBGs with various compositions were successfully synthesized by a sol-gel process using dodecylamine (DDA) served as both a catalyst and a template. The maximum content of CaO in SBGs was about 15%. The non-bridge oxygen amounts of the Si O network and the apatite-forming ability increased with the content proportion of CaO and P 2 O 5 . Bioactive glass pulp capping materials (BGPCMs) were prepared by mixing the SBGs powders and the phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The K 3 CaH(PO 4 ) 2 and hydroxyapatite (HA) formed between SBGs particles as soon as they were mixed with PBS solution. The compressive strengths of fully set BCPCM-2 molded were measured to be 31.76 ± 1.9577 MPa after setting for 24 h. The K 3 CaH(PO 4 ) 2 and the low crystallinity HA phases at the initial stage of solidification transformed to crystalline HA for 3 days, and the compressive strength was still higher than 10 MPa. Additionally, SBG-2 with a designed molar composition of 35% SiO 2 , 55% CaO and 10% P 2 O 5 more promoted dental pulp cell proliferation, and could be potential pulp capping applications.

Traditional encryption technologies using single-fluorescent materials are increasingly vulnerable to attacks due to their predictable responses to stimuli. Furthermore, conventional waterborne polyurethane (WPU) film fabrication methods, such as casting, suffer from long drying times and inconsistent thickness, limiting scalability for advanced applications. To address these issues, we developed cephalopod-inspired WPU composite films that integrate 6,7-dihydroxy coumarin (6,7-CU) and perylene tetracarboxylic acid (PTCA) as fluorophores in segregated layers. This colloidal system achieves good emulsion stability and interfacial interactions, which play a crucial role in the films' complex functionality. The dyes’ hydroxy and carboxylic acid groups strengthen both optical properties and mechanical strength of WPU, achieving a tensile strength of 24 MPa in a 100 μm thin film. Using the electrochemical demulsification-induced fast solidification (DIFS) method, we achieved rapid drying and uniform film formation, overcoming the limitations of traditional casting. This method leverages controlled interfacial dynamics to produce films with sophisticated multicolor responses and improved encryption complexity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal the films' stimuli-responsiveness, providing insights into the influence of interfacial mechanisms on their reversible color transformations under UV light and pH changes. Applications in data engraving and QR code labeling demonstrate the films' potential in secure information encryption and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Photo adhesives are widely used in various industries due to their high adhesion strength, fast curing and ease of use. However, manufacturing photo adhesives with underwater adhesion is a significant challenge mainly because water molecules can dissolve or swell the adhesive during in situ coacervation, and the hydration layer on the surface of the substrate prevents molecular interactions between the adhesive and the substrate. Herein, an underwater UV-curable adhesive with high adhesion strength and ultrafast curing time is composed of bottlebrush polyethers (BBPs) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) complex (BBPs-PAA). The BBPs component not only removes the hydration layer and prevents water intrusion into the adhesive through hydrophobic effect but also enhances adhesion and cohesion strength through hydrogen bonding. The prepared UV-curable adhesives, BBPs-PAA, can be ultrafast cured (10 s) on the surface of the substrate under UV irradiation, exhibiting ultrahigh adhesion strength on glass substrates, both in the air (14.9 MPa) and underwater (13.2 MPa). In particular, the adhesion strength of BBPs-PAA on glass substrates remains above 6.5 MPa after 30 days of immersion in water, salt, acid, and alkali solution environments. This study outlines a viable strategy for developing an instant and strong underwater adhesive, showcasing its substantial potential for diverse applications in aqueous environments.

This article studied a novel method for extrusion-printing additive manufacturing (AM) of composite solid propellant by fast curing isocyanated-HTPB and HTPB, which were blended and extruded via a static mixer. The gel time and tack-free time of isocyanated-HTPB with HTPB or diamines were extensively studied to screen for the potential formulation of extrusion-printing. Upon the results of computational fluid dynamics simulation on the mixing effect of the static mixer, the formulation with 7 min gel time and 2.5 h tack-free time was selected for extrusion-printing experiment. The shape retaining characteristic of the formulations with 72 wt %, 75 wt %, 80 wt %, and 85 wt % solid content was qualitatively studied by printing the points, fibers, fiber arrays, and multilayer samples under fixed printing parameters, such as the slurry flux, the nozzle moving speed, and air pressure etc. The results showed that the curing rate and solid content play an important role in the free standing property of the slurry printed. A 3D sample with a complex geometric shape, which has 15 layers,18.5 mm in height, and 20.1 mm in outer diameter, was successfully extrusion-printed by fast curing the slurry with the formulation of 85 wt % solid content. Its tensile strength and elongation at break are 0.33 MPa and 39.9 %, respectively. SEM observation showed that the internal morphology of the sample printed is dense and uniform. The results demonstrated that extrusion-printing AM by fast curing two components is a potential candidate AM method for composite solid propellants with high solid content.

The development of high-performance polymer is crucial for the fabrication of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) used in extreme conditions. Liquid crystal polyarylate thermosets (LCTs) demonstrate great potential as triboelectric material by virtue of exceptional comprehensive properties. However, there are only a few specific end-groups like phenylethynyl matching the LCT polycondensation temperature (above 300 °C). Moreover, the excellent properties of LCTs rely on the crosslinked network formed with long curing time at high temperature, restricting their further application in triboelectric material. Herein, a fast-curing LCT is designed by terminating with 4-maleimidophenol possessing appropriate reactivity. The resultant LCT (MA-LC-MA) exhibits much lower polycondensation temperature (250–270 °C) and curing temperature of 300 °C within only 1 min compared to typical LCTs (cured at 370 °C for 1 h). Furthermore, the cured MA-LC-MA retains a high glass transition temperature of 135 °C, storage modulus of 6 MPa even at 350 °C, and great electrical output performance. Additionally, triboelectric measurement related to the dielectric properties that vary with crosslinked network is innovatively utilized as an analysis technique of curing progress. This work provides a new strategy to design high-performance TENGs and promotes the development of next generation thermosets in extreme conditions.

Encapsulations are being increasingly investigated in both academic research and industrial manufacturing and applied in numerous fields, such as phase change materials and smart materials. In this paper, a novel strategy of demulsification-induced fast solidification(DIFS) was proposed for the rapid fabrication(within 1 s) of polymer encapsulations via immersion of demulsifier particles in emulsion. The DIFS method allowed the fabrication of three-dimensional(3D) hollow polymer encapsulations with precisely controlled size and thickness over a wide range from micron to millimeter within just 1 s. Magnetic nanoparticles and luminescent materials were further introduced into 3D hollow polymer encapsulations via facile blending method. Moreover, encapsulated paraffin phase change materials with good thermal stability were also obtained using the DIFS method. Therefore, this work provides new insights into the design and preparation of functionalized encapsulation materials.
