Prehospital rescue of accidental massive bleeding is crucial for saving lives. However, currently available hemostatic materials are still in infancy in treating accidental bleeding due to the challenges in fully satisfying the complex outdoor hemostatic requirements. Herein, we designed an epidermal growth factor (EGF)- incorporated, microparticle-formed, high-strength, dynamic environment-stable hemostatic gel system for prehospital rescue. Carboxyl and dimethylamide were employed as the hydrogen bond (H-bond) groups and were carefully engineered into the microparticles (DHMs). We demonstrated that the unique H-bond crosslinked micronized structure enabled the DHM-based gelling system to adequately meet the outdoor hemostatic requirements. The stable H-bond groups allow the DHMs to be stored at room temperature and be easily carried around. The small sizes (150–250 μm) of the DHMs enabled the filling of irregular defects, and upon encountering water, these DHMs integrated into hydrogels (DHMs-gels) with high mechanical strength (1.61 MPa), strong tissue adhesiveness (66.5 kPa) and stable performance under dynamic environments. In vivo results showed that the EGF-incorporated DHMs-gels (DHMs-EGF gel) achieved a 100 % survival rate in a simulated rescue process and promoted wound healing. Simultaneously possessing multiple prehospital rescue-required properties, the hemostatic DHMs-EGF may become an effective tool for emergency rescue.

Burns and scalds are thermal injuries caused by a large amount of heat accumulation in local tissues. The first cooling emergency is a key step. However, it is hard that in outdoors to find clean water to cool the scald tissue sites. Moreover, most dressings are concentrated on the treatment process today, neglecting the emergency treatment of temperature reduction. In this study, we imported refrigeration in the electrospinning process while using dirty water, rainwater and even urine of outdoors, so that the cooled sterile fibers were directly deposited on the burn and scald wounds, and the cooling emergency was achieved through the dual cooling mechanism. Since this fiber which is made up of cheap fish gelatin contains CuS adopting the green method, it can generate heat and effectively kill bacteria under the irradiation of an illumination lamp at the front end of a spinning device. As a result of the direct deposition, there is an excellent fit between the fibrous membrane and the skin, which reduces the air gap to achieve a better and quick cooling and heating effects. On the same Chitosan/Platelet-derived Growth Factor fiber membrane, this method of cooling first and heating second can shorten the recovery time from 30 days to 21 days. Thus, this treatment strategy has a great potential application prospect in the field of outdoor burn treatment.

Harnessing both ultraviolet (UV) light energy from sunlight and the kinetic energy generated by human locomotion—such as walking and jogging—poses a significant challenge. In this study, we present a self-powered hybrid nanogenerator (hNG) that integrates a low-work function polyurethane (FPU)-coated zinc foil, a high-work function polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-covered copper substrate, and an electron-supplementary layer. The synthesized FPU macromolecules exhibit electron-insulating properties while incorporating functional photoisomer and ionic liquid units. By exploiting the synergistic effects of neglected internal photoelectricity and triboelectricity, our hNG achieves impressive performance metrics: an open-circuit voltage of approximately 11 V, a short-circuit current of 130 μA, and a power density of 1 W m −2 under UV illumination at 150 µW cm −2 —similar to natural solar irradiation in Kunming—and during periodic contact-separation cycles at 5 Hz between the FPU and PTFE layers. These results significantly outperform those of traditional FPU-PTFE-based triboelectric nanogenerators. After rectification, the hNG serves as a power source for various applications, including illuminating a YNU-shaped LED strip, powering lasers, and operating a battery-free timer. Notably, outdoor tests demonstrate that the flexible hNG can activate a wireless sound transmitter, an SOS-type LED belt, and a light-and-sound alarm when exposed to direct sunlight. The self-powered sound transmitter effectively broadcasts preset SOS and coordinate signals, which can be received by a radio and displayed on a smartphone. This hybrid nanogenerator not only efficiently harvests wasted UV light energy from sunlight but also shows considerable potential for self-powered emergency rescue signaling applications.

Hydrogels offer significant potential for use in wearable soft electronic devices. However, their application faces considerable challenges in outdoor emergencies or extreme environments where a power supply is unavailable. In this study, multi-touch microcapsules with phase change properties were prepared by coating nanogold through silica as Pickering particles. Subsequently, the microspheres were integrated into a silicone oil-modified polyacrylate hydrogel with self-healing capabilities, resulting in the fabrication of a hydrogel strain sensor that exhibits precise self-healing and self-powered functionality. The mechanical properties of the hydrogel sensor can be modified by adjusting the polymer composition. Due to the multi-contact structure of nano-gold on the surface of microcapsules and the dynamic boronic ester bond interaction, the hydrogel sensor possesses precision self-healing capability. In addition, the hydrogel sensors demonstrate high sensitivity, which can accurately detect some subtle human motions, such as joint flexion. Importantly, the synthesized composite hydrogel exhibits self-powered performance, which could be helpful for rescue operations in outdoor or extreme environments. This study provides helpful results that can be used in the development of wearable soft electronics based on conductive hydrogels.

CO is an invisible killer that severely threatens the safety of trapped personnel in fire disasters. The existing CO removal approaches are passive and ineffective, which could not satisfy the emergency rescue needs. An active and synchronous CO removal approach (ASCR) based on catalytic oxidation is proposed. By spraying dry powder extinguishant and catalyst powder, the isolation layer and oxidation layer are formed on the fuel surface. CO removal is achieved by both combustion suppression and CO oxidation methods. The synthesized Co-La 0.1 catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity, thermal stability , and selectivity, which met the application requirements of the ASCR approach. The results of lab-scall tests demonstrated that the CO concentration in the smoke flow decreased from 135 ppm to 0 ppm immediately once employing the ASCR approach. Full-scale tests in the confined tunnel further verified the practical application performance. With spraying 2 kg extinguishant and 0.9 kg catalyst powder, CO concentration increased merely by ∼ 20 ppm within 50 min, which was far lower than that without taking any disposal measures (∼800 ppm). This approach can effectively control the CO concentration below the safety threshold in fire disasters and is significant for emergency rescue.

Harvesting electricity from ubiquitous moisture offers the promise of clean power for self-sustained systems. Despite extensive efforts, achieving high-power electricity generation remains challenging. Existing studies mimicking electric eels’ electrogenesis to enhance their electrical performance focused on the two-membrane structure that linearly adds up the voltage, but their current output was either transient or limited to microamperes, because of the large resistance for ion diffusing across material interfaces. Here, we report an electrocyte-inspired moisture-driven electricity generator (EMEG) made from an interphase-mediated Janus film. The continuous interphase significantly alleviates the ion migration resistance, boosting the current output to 150 µA and sustaining the voltage of 0.8 V continuously for more than 1000 h. We also show that integrated EMEGs were easily assembled to self-powered smart watch for emergency rescue. Furthermore, the integrated EMEGs achieved self-sustained and moisture-powered water splitting with a steady hydrogen production. Our results provide a rational for bio-inspired designs toward green and sustained power generation.

Timely administration of key medications toward patients with sudden diseases is critical to saving lives. However, slow transport of first-aid therapeutics and the potential absence of trained people for drug usage can lead to severe injuries or even death. Herein, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-mediated first-aid system for targeted delivery (uFAST) is developed. It allows unattended administration of emergency therapeutics-loaded transdermal microneedle (MN) patches toward patients to relieve symptoms by a contact-triggered microneedle applicator (CTMA). The implementability and safety of the uFAST for first aid is demonstrated in a severe hypoglycemic pig model by automatically delivering a glucagon patch with immediate and bioresponsive dual release modes. This platform technique may facilitate the development of UAV-mediated first-aid treatments for other sudden diseases.

Flexible sensors, due to their unique advantages, are anticipated to find applications in electronic skin, human monitoring, human–computer interaction, and other fields. Among these, flexible strain sensors have garnered significant attention owing to their broad detection range, high sensitivity, and robust anti-interference capability. This paper presents a method for constructing a uniform conductive network within a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) matrix by incorporating ionic liquids (ILs) and carbon black nanoparticles (CB). The resulting flexible strain sensor exhibits sensitivities of 1.16 and 2.15 at 0–60% and 60–200% strain levels, respectively. This sensor can accurately monitor various tensile signals and demonstrates response recovery times of 130 ms and 98 ms in tensile mode, and 191 ms and 195 ms in bending mode. Its output signal remains stable after over 200 cycles of 50% strain, indicating excellent durability and stability. Finally, by encapsulating and sewing it onto clothing, it can generate SOS distress signals in two ways, making it a potential tool for emergency calls. This flexible strain sensor showcases superior performance and immense potential in the realm of wearable electronics. Graphic abstract

Soft-tissue trauma emergency caused by natural disasters and traffic accidents is highly prevalent, which can result in massive bleeding, pathogen infection, and even death. Although numerous tissue adhesives can bind to tissue surfaces and cover wounds, most of them still have several deficiencies, including long gelation time, poor adhesive strength, and anti-infection, making them inappropriate for use as first-aid bandages. Herein, injectable and self-healing four-arm-PEG-CHO/polyethyleneimine (PEI) tissue adhesives as liquid first-aid supplies are developed via the dynamic Schiff base reaction for trauma emergency. It is found that the prepared hydrogel adhesives exhibit short and controlled gelation time (9∼88 s), strong adhesive strength, and excellent antibacterial ability. Their hemostatic and antimicrobial performances can be tailored by the mass ratio of four-arm-PEG-CHO/PEI. Moreover, in vitro biological assays display that the developed tissue adhesives possess satisfactory cyto/hemocompatibility. Importantly, in vivo the designed adhesives show fast hemostatic capacity and excellent anti-infection as compared to commercial Prontosan gel. Thus, this work indicates that the four-arm-PEG-CHO/PEI first-aid tissue adhesives display great potential for wound emergency management.

Emergency prehospital wound closure and hemorrhage control are the first priorities for life-saving. A majority bioadhesives form bonds with tissues through irreversible cross-linking, and the remobilization of misalignment may cause severe secondary damage to tissues. Therefore, developing an adhesive that can quickly and tolerably adhere to traumatized dynamic tissue or organ surfaces in emergency situations is a major challenge. Inspiring by the structure of human serum albumin (HSA), a branched polymer with multitentacled sulfhydryl is synthesized, then an instant and fault-tolerant tough wet-tissue adhesion (IFA) hydrogel is prepared. The adhesive application time is just 5 s (interfacial toughness of ∼580 J/m2) and favorable tissue-adhesion is maintained after 10 cycles. IFA hydrogel remains unchangeable adhesive performance after one month of storage based on the internal oxidation-reduction mechanism. It not only can efficiently seal various organs, but also achieves effective hemostasis in models of the rat femoral artery and rabbit-ear artery. This work also proposes an effective strategy for controllable adhesion, which enables the production of asymmetric adhesives with on-demand detachment. Importantly, IFA hydrogel has sound antioxidation, antibacterial property, hemocompatibility, and cytocompatibility. Hence, the HSA-inspired bioadhesive can emerge as a promising first-aid supply for human-machine interface-based health management and non-invasive wound closure. Burns are usually difficult to treat because their susceptibe to bacterial infections. When burns is accompanied by hyperthermia, the heat accumulated on the skin will causes extensive tissue damage. Most dressings focus on the treatment process, while ignoring the first-aid treatment to remove hyperthermia. To make matters worse, when outdoors, it is hard to find clean water to wash and cool the burned area. A dressing which can simultaneously realize first-time cooling and repairing treatment of the burned area can shorten treatment time, and is especially beneficial for outdoor use. In this study, a handheld coaxial electrospinning device is developed for preparing platelet-rich plasma @Polycaprolactone-epsilon polylysine ( [email protected] /ε-PL) core–shell nanofibers . The nanofibers can be synchronously transformed into ice fibers during the spinning process, and directly deposited on the skin. The whole process is convenient to use outdoor. Via dual cooling mechanisms, first aid can take away the excessive heat in the burn area by nanofibers. These core–shell nanofibers also show its excellent antimicrobial and tissue regeneration-promoting properties. Therefore, it achieves first-time cooling and repair treatment of the burned area at the same time. Moreover, due to direct in-situ deposition of this handheld coaxial electrospinning, better antimicrobial properties, and faster healing performance are achieved. By using this integrated strategy that combines cooling, antibacterial and healing promotion, the burn recovery time is shortened from 21 days to 14 days.

First-aid burn wound patches play an essential role in reducing mortality by preventing hyperthermia and resisting wound infection. However, existing products still suffer from inferior cooling performance, limited therapeutic effect, weaker wound protection, and/or high cost, which hinder their widespread application in market. Herein, we design and fabricate a cost-effective multilayered topological hydrogel-based first-aid burn wound patch (FBP) for rapid cooling, efficient anti-inflammation, and wound protection. Such a hydrogel patch is fabricated from a polyacrylamide-chitosan (PAAm-CS) hydrogel as the soft antibacterial layer integrated with a topological poly(vinyl alcohol)-chitosan (PVA-CS) hydrogel as the stretchable cooling layer, as well as thin polyethylene films as encapsulated layers to prevent dehydration. As-fabricated FBP exhibits a unique combination of intriguing mechanical, thermal, and biological properties, including softness (Young’s modulus of 83 kPa), stretchability (fracture stain over 106%), high thermal conductivity (0.54 W m −1 K −1 ), instant cooling, effective antibacterial activity (96.2% for S. aureus, 92.2% for E. coli), and excellent biocompatibility (94.04% cell viability at 20 mg mL −1 extract in 24 h). A second-degree scald rat model further demonstrates that fast-cooling and anti-inflammatory FBP can effectively reduce the tissue damage and inflammation levels by showing less edema formation and higher collagen/blood vessel ratios. With a set of these interesting performances, the FBP may be useful as a first-aid burn wound product to alleviate patients’ sufferings and even rescue more lives in critical situation.
