Dissolved Mn(III), as a potent one-electron transfer oxidant, is ubiquitous in natural waters and sediments and actively involved in the transformation of organics in biogeochemical processes and water treatment. However, the important role of Mn(III) has long been overlooked because of its short life. This study was the first to investigate the performance of Mn(III) in organoarsenic transformation and to highlight the environmental implications. Both homogeneous and heterogeneous Mn(III)-based systems were effective to remove p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA, 15 μ M) with degradation efficiency approaching 40.4 %–98.3 %. Two degradation pathways of p -ASA were proposed, in which As-C bond and amino group were vulnerable sites to Mn(III) attack, leading to the formation of more toxic arsenate (As(V)) and nitarsone. Through transforming organoarsenic to inorganic arsenic species, the removal efficiency of total arsenic and dissolved organics were enhanced to 65.1 %–95.5 % and 16.6 %–36.6 %, respectively, by post-treatment of coagulation or adsorption, accompanied with significant reduction of cytotoxicity and environmental risks. Particularly, polymeric ferric sulfate and granular activated alumina showed superior performance in the total As removal. Moreover, oxidation efficiency of Mn(III) was hardly affected by common cations and anions (e.g., Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , NH 4 + , NO 3 ˉ, SO 4 ˉ), halide ions (e.g., Clˉ, Brˉ) and natural organic matter, showing high robustness for organoarsenic removal under complicated water matrices. Overall, this study shed light on the significance of Mn(III) to the fate of organoarsenics in manganese-rich environments, and demonstrated the promising potential of Mn(III)-based strategies to achieve targeted decontamination in water/wastewater purification.

The widespread occurrence of p -arsanilic acid ( p -ASA) in natural environments poses big threats to the biosphere due to the generation of toxic inorganic arsenic (i.e., As(III) and As(V), especially As(III) with higher toxicity and mobility). Oxidation of p -ASA or As(III) to As(V) followed by precipitation of total arsenic using Fe-based advanced oxidation processes demonstrated to be a promising approach for the treatment of arsenic contamination. This study for the first time investigated the efficiency and inherent mechanism of p -ASA and As(III) oxidation by Fe(II)/peracetic acid (Fe(II)/PAA) and PAA processes. p -ASA was rapidly degraded by the Fe(II)/PAA process within 20 s at neutral to acidic pHs under different conditions, while it was insignificantly degraded by PAA oxidation alone. Lines of evidence suggested that hydroxyl radicals and organic radicals generated from the homolytic O O bond cleavage of PAA contributed to the degradation of p -ASA in the Fe(II)/PAA process. p -ASA was mainly oxidized to As (V), NH 4 + , and p -aminophenol by the Fe(II)/PAA process, wherein the aniline group and its para position were the most vulnerable sites. As(III) of concern was likely generated as an intermediate during p -ASA oxidation and it could be readily oxidized to As(V) by the Fe(II)/PAA process as well as PAA alone. The in-depth investigation demonstrated that PAA alone was effective in the oxidation of As(III) under varied conditions with a stoichiometric molar ratio of 1:1. Efficient removal (> 80%) of total arsenic during p -ASA oxidation by Fe(II)/PAA process or during As(III) oxidation by PAA process with additional Fe(III) in synthetic or real waters were observed, mainly due to the adsorptive interactions of amorphous ferric (oxy)hydroxide precipitates. This study systematically investigates the oxidation of p -ASA and As(III) by the Fe(II)/PAA and PAA processes, which is instructive for the future development of arsenic remediation technology.

Background: Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule is a realgar and cinnabar-containing traditional Chinese medicine, the contents of total arsenic and total mercury are found over regulation defined limits. However, only small amounts of arsenic in realgar and mercury in cinnabar are dissolved
in the gastric juice, so the determination of soluble arsenic and soluble mercury is more significant than that of total arsenic and total mercury in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. Objective: To study the contents of total arsenic, total mercury, soluble arsenic and soluble mercury
in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. Methods: Microwave digestion and semi-bionic extraction were used to pretreat the samples of Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule, and the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method was established to determine the contents of total arsenic,
total mercury, soluble arsenic and soluble mercury in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. The accuracy of the established method was further evaluated by using a certified standard reference material prepared from dried citrus leaves (GBW10020(GSB-11)). Results: The spiked recoveries were
within 95-105 %. The R.S.D% of repeatability (N=6) and precision (N = 6) were below 5.0 %. The correlation coefficients of linear (R) for arsenic and mercury were both above 0.998. The limits of quantification (LOQ) were below 0.1 μg/L. The contents of As and Hg were defined in the dried
citrus leaves and very near to the standard values provided by the manufacturer. The established method was applied for the analysis of three batches of Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule produced by three different manufacturers successfully. Insufficient realgar or cinnabar was formulated
in some Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule samples. Conclusion: The analysis showed that the contents of soluble arsenic and soluble mercury in artificial gastric juice were significantly less than that of total arsenic and total mercury in Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule. The results
provided a reference for further study on the toxicology and pharmacokinetics of Compound Niuhuang Xiaoyan capsule.

As one of the extensively used feed additives in livestock and poultry breeding, p-arsanilic acid (p-ASA) has become an organoarsenic pollutant with great concern. For the efficient removal of p-ASA from water, the combination of chemical oxidation and adsorption is recognized as a promising process. Herein, hollow/porous Mn–Fe-mixed oxide (MnFeO) nanocubes were synthesized and used in coupling with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to oxidize p-ASA and remove the total arsenic (As). Under acidic conditions, both p-ASA and total As could be completely removed in the PMS/MnFeO process and the overall performance was substantially better than that of the Mn/Fe monometallic system. More importantly, an interface-promoted direct oxidation mechanism was found in the p-ASA-involved PMS/MnFeO system. Rather than activate PMS to generate reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO4·–, ·OH, and 1O2), the MnFeO nanocubes first adsorbed p-ASA to form a ligand–oxide interface, which improved the oxidation of the adsorbed p-ASA by PMS and ultimately enhanced the removal of the total As. Such a direct oxidation process achieved selective oxidation of p-ASA and avoidance of severe interference from the commonly present constituents in real water samples. After facile elution with dilute alkali solution, the used MnFeO nanocubes exhibited superior recyclability in the repeated p-ASA removal experiments. Therefore, this work provides a promising approach for efficient abatement of phenylarsenical-caused water pollution based on the PMS/MnFeO oxidation process.

Detrimental health effects caused by the intake of food contaminated with heavy metals have drawn concerns on effective monitoring using rapid and benign methods. This work presented a novel surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based 3-Aminobenzeneboronic acid (ABBA) labeled silver (Ag) nanosensor combined with chemometric algorithms to detect and predict total arsenic (TAs) in acid digested spiked black tea leaves. The sensor recognizes TAs through the partial detachment of ABBA and the chemical formation of As-O-Ag linkage between the TAs and the Ag nanoparticles , which caused a SERS-on signal enhancement effect. SERS combined with competitive adaptive reweighted sampling partial least squares algorithm predicted the TAs with higher correlation coefficient (R p ) results (R p = 0.9750) and a detection limit of 0.0273 µg/g. Good recoveries of 83.84–109.53% and the excellent agreement with the inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry method (R 2 = 0.999) revealed this developed rapid method could be deployed for fast-tracking of As in food samples.
