The rusty scrap iron (RSI) or a mixture of rusty scrap iron and reduced iron powder (RSI-RIP) can be used as an exogenous additive to enhance the anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge . In order to make rational use of the fermentation residue, the sludge after intensified fermentation was pyrolyzed to produce biochar in this study, which was used in the adsorption of ammonia and phosphorus from the anaerobic fermentation broth . The experimental results demonstrated that the pore structure of the sludge biochar was greatly improved after enhanced fermentation with RSI and RIP. Meanwhile, there was an increase in the proportion of metallic elements such as Ca, Fe and Mg. On the other hand, the RSI-RIP co-enhanced fermented biochar (ES600) prepared at 600 °C showed a higher adsorption capacity , which was comparable to the commercially activated carbon. Neutral or weakly alkaline environments were preferred during the adsorption process . At a suitable pH condition , the maximum removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen (NH 4 + -N) and total phosphorus (TP) on ES600 reached 91.3% and 98.6%, respectively. In addition, the saturated ES600 was regenerated by simple washing with ammonia-free water. After three cycles, the removal efficiency of NH 4 + -N and TP remained at 71.3% and 83.2%, respectively. As a result, the biochar prepared from RSI-RIP enhanced fermented sludge can be used as a promising low-cost adsorbent.

Phosphonate is an important category of highly soluble organophosphorus in contaminated waters, and its oxidative transformation into phosphate is usually a prerequisite step to achieve the in-depth removal of the total phosphorus. Currently, selective oxidation of phosphonate into phosphate is urgently desired as conventional advanced oxidation processes suffer from severe matrix interferences. Herein, we employed 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) as a model phosphonate and demonstrated its efficient and selective oxidation by the Cu(II)/H2O2 process at alkaline pH. In the presence of trace Cu(II) (0.020 mM), 90.8% of HEDP (0.10 mM) was converted to phosphate by H2O2 in 30 min at pH 9.5, whereas negligible conversion was observed by UV/H2O2 or a Fenton reaction (pH = 3.0). The oxidation of HEDP by Cu(II)/H2O2 was insignificantly affected by natural organic matters (10.0 mg TOC/L) and various anions including chloride, sulfate, and nitrate (10.0 mM). The complexation of Cu(II) with HEDP coupling Cu(III) produced in situ enabled an intramolecular electron transfer process, which features high selective oxidation. Selective degradation of HEDP was further validated by adding stoichiometric H2O2 into an industrial effluent, where the existing Cu(II) could serve as the catalyst. This study also provides a successful case to trigger selective oxidation of trace pollutants of concern upon synergizing with the nature of the contaminated water.

Total phosphorus is one of the key water quality parameters in environmental monitoring. To precisely determine the total phosphorus, water samples have to be pretreated to convert the various forms of phosphorus to orthophosphate. Conventionally, pretreatment is accomplished by heating, acidification, and oxidation in a digestion equipment, which is dangerous, time-consuming, and complicated. Herein, we propose a novel high-performance electrochemical oxidation protocol for phosphorus digestion based on a PbO2 electrode. The electrode, which has a hydrophobic and stable surface, was prepared by electrochemical deposition on a titanium substrate and has high hydroxyl radical utilization when digesting total phosphorus. As a result, 90% of sodium glycerophosphate was digested within 30 minutes, and high digestion ratios of acephate, glyphosate, and inland water samples were obtained as well. In addition, this electrochemical digestion protocol does not required heating and acidification steps, which shortens the digestion time. Therefore, a rapid quantification of total phosphorus in the water sample was achieved.

Total phosphorus is a key indicator of eutrophication, but conventional total phosphorus methods face challenges such as complex operational procedures, bulky instrumentation, and safety risks, limiting on-site rapid analysis. In this study, an on-site total phosphorus determination method was developed by integrating peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation processes with the phosphomolybdenum blue spectrophotometric method. The system was composed of a portable thermal cup for mild sample digestion and a compact spectrophotometer for quantitative analysis, enabling rapid on-site determination of total phosphorus in natural waters without the need for high temperature or pressure. Compared with traditional laboratory methods, operational complexity and equipment footprint were significantly reduced providing a practical solution for real-time water quality monitoring. The effects of initial solution pH, digestion temperature, digestion duration, and peroxymonosulfate concentration on digestion efficiency were systematically investigated, and optimal on-site digestion conditions were determined using response surface methodology. The method exhibited excellent linearity in the range of 0.0-0.6 mg·L⁻¹ and a detection limit of 0.008 mg·L⁻¹. Spiked recoveries in various matrices were 107.5%-116.5%, indicating broad applicability in diverse aquatic environments. Results from actual water samples, were consistent with those obtained by the standard method, confirming the reliability and accuracy of the proposed approach for on-site total phosphorus determination.

Due to the stable chelating effect of organic phosphonates in wastewater, phosphonates with increasing emission are difficult to be removed effectively by traditional ferric salt flocculation , which has posed tough challenges for reducing total phosphorus pollution in recent years. In this work, calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) was introduced to work together with the widely investigated flocculant of ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) to realize an efficient removal of nitrilotrismethylenephosphonic acid (NTMP) at much lower dosage of FeCl 3 . With an aid of synergy effect from together use of CaCO 3 and FeCl 3 , the remaining concentration as low as 0.16 mg−P/L, far below the sewage discharge limit (0.5 mg−P/L), was simply obtained with a significantly reduced Fe/P molar ratio at only 4, resulting from calcium source donor to form more stable Fe–Ca–P tridentate bridging complexes, high affinity towards ferric ions on CaCO 3 surface and slow-release alkaline from CaCO 3 . A comparison among sodium hydroxide (NaOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH) 2 ) and CaCO 3 as additives, was carried out to highlight the advantages of using CaCO 3 and clarify the mechanism for the greatly improved performance by a set of characterizations including XRD, FTIR, Zeta potential , XPS , SEM−EDS and TG analyses. The addition of CaCO 3 in ferric flocculation resulted in further obvious advantages such as 75% shortened settling time and only one−third of sludge volume of the precipitant, beneficial to the sample handling in engineering application. The proposed new approach has been further confirmed to work efficiently on real phosphonate-containing wastewater. Discussion on the interaction between CaCO 3 and ferric salts in phosphonate solutions shed new insights into the working mechanism of using CaCO 3 for the treatment of phosphonates-containing wastewater.

Water pollution poses a significant challenge to the development of rural human settlements in China, necessitating the development of wastewater treatment systems tailored to the local economic conditions and discharge characteristics. This study introduces a novel wastewater treatment process, namely solar photovoltaic power generation-constructed wetland (SPPG-CW) and conducts a comprehensive evaluation of its performance on rural domestic sewage treatment. The findings reveal that the solar photovoltaic power generation unit ensures stable off-grid operation, providing a reliable power supply to the wetland unit. Simulation results demonstrate that the LAB achieves stable energy output and absorption during SPPG unit operation, thus avoiding energy loss. Long-term monitoring experiments confirm that the SPPG-CW efficiently treats real wastewater. Upon stabilization, the system consistently achieves over 90 % removal efficiency for turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), linear alkyl-benzene sulfonates (LAS), and petroleum. The influent concentrations of COD and petroleum were identified as critical water quality indicators. Post-treatment, the SPPG-CW reduces COD and petroleum concentrations to as low as 5.49 mg/L and 0.02 mg/L, respectively, meeting the irrigation water quality standards. The average removal rates for total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were 88.38 % and 79.41 %, respectively. Further investigation into the purification pathways reveals that microbial activity primarily drives the degradation of LAS and TN, while TP removal is largely attributed to plant uptake. Remarkably, the SPPG-CW, incurring only 20.37 % of the total cost of existing rural wastewater treatment facilities, demonstrates promise for applications in areas endowed with abundant solar energy resources.

In recent years, in order to improve the rural living environment, rural domestic sewage treatment has received more and more attention in China. However, the standard compliance rate of total phosphorus (TP) in rural domestic sewage after treatment is very low, and TP has become the main pollutant that prevents rural domestic sewage treatment facilities from meeting water pollutants discharge standards. In this study, to prepare calcium-modified biochar composites (E-BC) by one-step pyrolysis, waste eggshell (E) was employed as a calcium source and waste pine sawdust (BC) was employed as a carbon source. The E-BC composites produced were effective in adsorbing phosphate (P) from aqueous solutions in a broad pH range of 3–11, with good adsorption selectivity. E-BC’s adsorption capacity for P increased as the pyrolysis temperature increased from 700 °C to 900 °C, which was attributed to the higher specific surface area and calcium oxide content at higher pyrolysis temperatures. The E-BC sample, which was made from eggshell (filtered through 100 mesh sieves) and pine sawdust (filtered through 100 mesh sieves) with a mass ratio of 2:1 and a pyrolysis temperature of 900 °C, had a maximum adsorption capacity of 301 mg/g. The Langmuir model and pseudo second-order model were the best at describing the adsorption process, and the predominant sorption mechanism for P is the chemisorption reaction of calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide with phosphate to create hydroxyapatite. E-BC can effectively remove P from rural domestic sewage. The total phosphorus (TP) removal rate in rural domestic sewage ranges from 95.3 to 99.5%. After adsorption treatment, the discharge of TP in rural sewage meets the second-grade (TP < 3 mg/L) or even the first-grade (TP < 2 mg/L). This study provides an experimental basis for efficient P removal using E-BC adsorbent materials and suggests possible applications in rural domestic sewage.

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) is usually effective for oxidizing a variety of organic pollutants within a few seconds, but some recalcitrant asorganophosphorus pesticides such as dimethoate require higher dose of Fe(VI) and inorganic phosphorus produced by mineralization is difficult to remove. In this study, acid-activated ferrate (Fe(VI)) was firstly used to degrade organophosphorus pesticides dimethoate and simultaneously remove total phosphorus (TP) from solution under simulated sunlight. At a Fe(VI):dimethoate molar radio of 15:1, dimethoate was almost completely removed within 20 min and 47% of TP in the solution was removed by the reduction product of Fe(VI) within 240 min. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and terephthalic acid (TA) fluorescence experiments showed that •OH radicals were continuously generated in the system, and •OH formation pathway was proposed. Importantly, the involvement of •OH in acid-activated Fe(VI) process was confirmed for the first time by EPR. In the acid-activated Fe(VI)/simulated sunlight system, the removal of dimethoate and TP gradually increased with the decrement of activation pH, whereas the increase of molar ratio of Fe(VI):dimethoate enhanced the removal of dimethoate and TP. The addition of inorganic anions (HCO 3 - and NO 2 - ) had obvious inhibitory effects on dimethoate and TP removal. Eight degradation products including O,O,S-trimethylphosphorothiate, omethoate and 2- S -methyl-(N-methyl) acetamide were determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, and two possible degradation pathways were proposed. The insights gained from this study open a new avenue to simultaneously degrade and remove organic contaminants .

To enhance nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment , a novel method of wrapping waste iron shavings (Fe-C) in polyurethane sponge cubes tied in anoxic zones of a continuous reactor was proposed. Three types of denitrifying bacteria were enriched simultaneously in biofilms and activated sludge , including iron autotrophic denitrifying bacteria (7.83–8.71 %), heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria (10.60–11.95 %), and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrifying bacteria (23.47–40.06 %). Iron autotrophic denitrifying bacteria ( Dechloromonas and Sphaerotilus ) can remove NO 3 − -N using Fe 2+ as electron donor produced by micro-electrolysis of iron shavings without organic carbon demand, and heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrifying bacteria ( Ferribacterium and Zoogloea ) can simultaneously accomplish nitrification and denitrification under aerobic conditions . The enrichment of these two functional bacteria strengthened the nitrogen removal performance compared to conventional heterotrophic denitrifying process, which could achieve efficient and stable total nitrogen removal (87.4 %) even with low organic carbon. In addition, the synergy of biological and chemical processes through Fe-C micro-electrolysis also enhanced total phosphorus removal (86.0 %).

The nitrogen-doping carbon nanotube modified polyethersulfone membrane (NCNT@PES) was prepared by vacuum-assisted filtration. The catalytic activity and anti-fouling capacity of NCNT@PES/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system were both systematically investigated. Selecting ethylenediamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid) (EDTMP) as a target phosphonate, the NCNT@PES/PMS system degraded almost 100% of EDTMP, and about 60% of the total phosphorus (TP) in EDTMP could be transformed into orthophosphate (PO 4 3− ) within 1 min. Scavenger experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique verified that the surface-bound radicals were mainly contributed the degradation and transformation of EDTMP in the NCNT@PES/PMS system. The presence of HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− and NOM weakened the catalytic reactions, nevertheless, the NCNT@PES/PMS system still showed considerable effectiveness on the transformation of EDTMP in real sewage effluent. Moreover, the anti-fouling experiment proved that NCNT@PES/PMS system were superior on the removal of fluorescent components in the real sewage effluent, and their removal rates for the dissolved organic matter (DOC) and UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV 254 ) were also improved. During the filtration cycles, the NCNT@PES/PMS system mitigated the membrane fouling significantly, which had been verified by the slower decline of normalized flux, less ultrapure water flux loss rates and higher ultrapure water flux recovery rates. This study provided a novel but simple way for effective EDTMP decontamination, at the same time, confirmed the potential of NCNT@PES membrane coupled with PMS activation on anti-fouling and water purification ability.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) struggle to entirely remove phosphonates from wastewater, and the remaining phosphates easily cause secondary pollution. With MnFe 2 O 4 as the core and hydrated zirconium oxide (HZO) as the shell, the magnetic core-shell nanoreactor MnFe 2 O 4 @HZO with dual functions of "catalysis and adsorption" was designed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for nitrilotris-methylenephosphonic acid (NTMP) removal. Total phosphorus removal reached 96.5% within 180 min, with only 0.18 mg/L of phosphates left because of the full exploitation of active sites and adsorption sites. This is because of the strong inner-sphere complexation of shell for phosphates adsorption and the excellent electron transfer performance of the core for PMS activation. High NTMP removal under the protection of HZO shell could be obtained over wide pH (3−8) or complex water matrices. After five cycles, Mn leaching amount was only 0.4 mg/L. The study provides information on the design of core-shell catalysts in the PMS-AOP field for the comprehensive removal of contaminants.

Ecological soil systems (ESSs) are usually used to remove nitrogen from wastewater. Due to the poor denitrification performance of traditional ecological soil systems (ESSs), this study proposes a two-stage water distribution system to improve the nitrogen removal. The effects of different distribution ratios on the system treatment effect were studied in an intermittent operation mode. After determining the optimal distribution ratio and intermittent operation conditions, the dynamics of system inflow, outflow, and nitrogen removal were monitored. Theoretical analysis of the denitrification mechanism was carried out. The results showed that the optimum water distribution ratio was 2: 1, and a mean total nitrogen removal rate of 60.42% was achieved, which is 23.09% greater than that is typically achieved by the single-section ecological system. Under optimum distribution ratio conditions, the system also demonstrated effective removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total phosphorus (TP) and ammonia nitrogen ( NH 4 + -N), allowing the effluent to satisfy China's urban sewage treatment plant level B emission standards.
