Fabrication and characterization of hierarchical microcapsules with multi-storage cells for repeatable self-healing

Ying Xue,Chunmei Li,Jin Liu,Jiaojun Tan,Zhengzhou Su,Yumin Yang,Guoxian Zhang,Qiuyu Zhang

Microcapsule-based self-healing polymer has been demonstrated its potential application in various aspects, because their automatically repairing property endows the material with a longer lifetime. However, the limited number of healing times restricts the development of microcapsule-based self-healing system. Herein, a hierarchical microcapsule with multi-storage cells (HMMC) was designed and fabricated by an efficient in-situ polymerization strategy, which could repeatable release active agents to repair cracks in the same region. In this strategy, synthesis microcapsule-type stabilizers (MTS) with healing agent (dicyclopentadiene, DCPD) were used as stabilizers of Pickering emulsion to prepare HMMC by thiol-isocyanate click reaction. It was shown that HMMC exhibited a hierarchical structure with a central capsule covered by a layer of MTS. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed the core content of HMMCs was 51.52 %. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra proved that the active DCPD was successfully encapsulated in each storage cells of HMMCs. The repeatable self-healing property was demonstrated by Electrochemical (EIS) and anticorrosion experiments.

Effect of acylhydrazone self-healing agents with different structures on the properties of SBS modified asphalt waterproofing membrane

Yanheng He,Tianwei Zhang,Ming Zeng,Hao Duan,Bing Zhang,Jianying Yu

To prepare SBS modified asphalt (SMA) waterproofing membrane with excellent self-healing performance, in this paper, four self-healing agents (ASHA-A, ASHA-B, ASHA-C, ASHA-D) with acylhydrazone bonds and carbon-carbon double bonds (C C) were synthesized, and were used to prepare self-healing SMA waterproofing membranes (SSMA-A, SSMA-B, SSMA-C, SSMA-D). The effects of ASHAs with different structures on the structure, high and low temperature properties, joint peel strength and self-healing performance of SSMAs were investigated. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence microscope results showed that acylhydrazone bonds of ASHAs were introduced into the chains of SBS molecules, and the SBS in SSMAs occurred crosslinking through the C C of ASHAs and SBS, the crosslinked network structures of SBS in SSMA-C and SSMA-D were denser and more complete because ASHA-C and ASHA-D contained more C C involved in the crosslinking reaction. The softening point and low temperature flexibility of SSMAs were enhanced by the formation of the SBS crosslinked network structure, and the optimum dosage of ASHAs was 0.6%. The joint peel strength of SSMA-A, SSMA-B, SSMA-C and SSMA-D increased by 26.68%, 31.25%, 49.52% and 56.97% compared to SMA. The introduction of acylhydrazone bonds with reversible fracture and rearrangement significantly improved the crack self-healing performance of SMA, the impermeability times of SMA, SSMA-A, SSMA-B, SSMA-C and SSMA-D were 13.28 min, 37.29 min, 42.53 min, 53.34 min and 59.67 min after self-healing at 40℃ for 8 h, which indicated that ASHA-D with benzene ring and multiple C C had the best improvement in self-healing performance of SMA.

Multilayer composite microcapsules synthesized by Pickering emulsion templates and their application in self-healing coating

Huan Yi,Yu Yang,Xiaoyu Gu,Jian Huang,Chaoyang Wang

Multilayer composite microcapsules, richly and efficiently loaded with a healing reagent (isophorone diisocyanate, IPDI), are prepared based on lignin nanoparticle-stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion templates. Size control of the microcapsules is conducted by varying the lignin content and the oil–water volume ratios of the Pickering emulsions. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM), the resulting microcapsules were shown to be spherical in shape, with an ideal structure of a rough outer surface and a smooth inner surface, and a shell thickness of 4.5 μm and a mean diameter of 40–117 μm. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) reveal the extraordinary characteristics of the capsules: a core fraction of 81.1 wt%, excellent thermal stability with the initial evaporating temperature of IPDI elevated by 72 °C, and high durability in aqueous solution-submersion and air-exposure tests with a mass loss of about 9.7 wt% after four days submersion or two weeks exposure. Furthermore, the microcapsules are embedded into epoxy coatings to apply this technology to anticorrosive polymer coatings. Investigations by brine-submersion corrosion-accelerating tests demonstrate that the self-healing microcapsules incorporated into the epoxy coatings on steel plates are well dispersed in the coating and have a favourable anticorrosive effect.

Freeform embedded printing of vasculature in cementitious materials for healing-agent transport

Yuanyuan Zhang,Pan Pan,Wenqiang Li,Biqin Dong,Jiaoning Tang,Feng Xing,Guang Ming Zhu

Vascular systems for mass recycling promise to endow cementitious materials with self-recovering abilities, which would prolong their durability. However, there is still a lack of strategy in the construction of freeform vasculature with three-dimensional connectivity. In this work, we have developed an embedded printing strategy within cementitious materials, in which a Pickering emulsion gel is developed as the fugitive ink. The proposed two-phase ink allows versatile printing, effective sealing, and can be removed under mild conditions, enabling the formation of freeform, isolated vascular networks. To support the development of embedded printing strategy, we also analyzed the relationships between vessel features, CM hydration, writing speed, and flow rate. The tested aqueous healing agent moves through the printed vasculature to reach and heal cracks, demonstrating the effectiveness of this internal structure in terms of mass transport. We conclude that embedded printing allows the creation of vascular structures in cementitious materials and, ultimately, of intelligent construction materials.

Synthesis of pH-sensitive water and oil dual-absorption material using microemulsion polymerization process

Chunyu Wang,Yuhuan Bu,Shenglai Guo,Zhuang Cai,Baojiang Sun,Guangquan Li,Zhonghou Shen

pH-sensitive water and oil dual-absorption material (WODAM) has been successfully synthesized through microemulsion polymerization. Firstly, microemulsions prepared with monomers were analyzed by pseudo-ternary phase diagram. In addition, conductivities of microemulsions were tested to identify microemulsion types. Meanwhile, the factors that affected microemulsion types were analyzed. Then WODAMs were prepared, and the chemical structure was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Liquid absorption tests indicated that both monomer ratio and microstructure of WODAMs had influences on their water absorption rate (WAR) and oil absorption rate (OAR). In addition, pH sensitivity tests showed that WODAM absorbed much water in neutral and weak alkaline solutions, but little water in strong alkaline solutions. What’s more, liquid absorption tests in cement slurry filtrate (CSF) showed that WODAM was applied to oil well cement. This paper prepared a new self-healing agent, and is of great significance to realize self-healing cement in complex downhole condition.
