The unique periodic structure of photonic crystals demonstrates an effective slow photon effect that enhances the interaction between light and matter. This study designed and prepared MOF photonic crystal beads, and significantly improved the photocatalytic efficiency by utilizing the slow light effect. Utilizing microfluidic technology, ZIF-8 was self-assembled to form photonic crystal beads (PCB-Z) to enhance adsorption properties and light absorption. The surface of PCB-Z is modified with CdS to form a heterostructure (PCB-ZC), which widens the absorption spectrum, reduces the carrier recombination rate, and increases the specific surface area, while the photocurrent intensity of PCB-ZC is about 1.8 and 29 times that of CdS and PCB-Z. Under the combined effect of photonic crystal structure, ZIF-8/CdS heterojunction and slow photon effect, the degradation rate of Rhodamine B by PCB-ZC was 15.22 times higher than the disordered ZIF-8 powder, and the photocatalytic performance was significantly improved. The dominant role of holes in Rhodamine B degradation was confirmed by free radical trapping experiments and EPR tests. This research confirms that MOF-based photonic crystals can be assembled into periodic structures to enhance adsorption properties and light absorption, which provides a new paradigm for the development of MOF-based photocatalysts.

Monodisperse ZnO particles with adjustable size have been produced on a large scale by two-step seeding-growth polyol reactions. Through spin coating of supersaturated ZnO/diethylene glycol solution and evaporation of solvent, opaline ZnO photonic crystal (PC) film with good crystallinity and uniform photonic structures can be prepared from these ZnO particles. Compared with a disorderly stacked ZnO film, the ZnO PC film shows a higher activity in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 due to the generated slow photons at the edge of the photonic band gap and their promotion to the light absorption. When the electronic band gap of ZnO matches the red edge of the photonic band gap of ZnO PC, the enhancement factor of photocatalytic activity represented by CO evolution can be maximized to 2.64-fold in the current experiment. Compared to the traditional inverse opal photocatalysts, the opaline ZnO photocatalysts are prepared by simplified and scalable procedures, and they still possess the same enhancement in activity compared to ZnO without the photonic structure, which might be broadly used in solar energy utilization, environment protection, and many other green chemical processes in the future.

The persistent and recurrent nature of biofilm infections, coupled with their increased resistance to antibiotics, poses a significant health risk. Photodynamic therapy has emerged as a promising strategy against biofilms, and it is crucial to fully harness the optimal potential of photosensitizers for generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) in order to prevent the development of resistance through insufficient ROS induction. The present study describes the fabrication of a photodynamic platform through the conjugation of photosensitizer chlorine e6 (Ce6) into inverse opal photonic crystal (IOPC) with a matching photonic band edge. The resulting slow photon effect of IOPC improves the light-harvesting capacity of Ce6 and ensures a 370% enhancement in the production of high levels of ROS at low Ce6 dosage (nanomolar levels) and light intensity (3 mW cm −2 ). In vitro experiments demonstrate that IOPC enhances the photodynamic antibiofilm efficacy of Ce6 by an impressive 375%. Furthermore, in vivo experiments confirm that IOPC expedites wound healing in mice infected with biofilm through photodynamic treatment. This work provides valuable insights into the phenomenon of slow photon effect in enhancing photodynamic therapy and presents a recommended design principle for achieving efficient antibiofilm treatment.

Photocatalytic oxidation technology using solar energy is an effective strategy to solve environmental pollution and energy shortage. To avoid angle dependence of traditional photonic crystal photocatalysts and address the limitations of high charge recombination rate and low light utilization of TiO 2 , this study proposed a novel inverse opal TiO 2 /CdS photonic crystal beads (IO TiO 2 /CdS PCBs) photocatalyst. By leveraging the synergistic coupling of PCBs’ slow light effect and TiO 2 /CdS heterojunction, the photocatalytic activity was significantly enhanced. The results revealed that the PCBs matching the blue edge with TiO 2 ′s electronic band gap (IO TiO 2 -140 PCBs) exhibited the highest apparent rate constant of 0.01901 min −1 . By introducing CdS to form a heterojunction with TiO 2 , the photocatalytic performance was further improved by effectively inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated carriers. The degradation rate of RhB reached 96.6 % in 60 min, outperforming that of IO TiO 2 at 65.1 %, with the rate constant increasing by 3.1 times. Electron spin resonance and trapping experiments indicated that h + was the main active specie, and the possible reaction mechanism path was proposed. The combination of “extrinsic” modifications by doping CdS and “self-structural” modifications by shaping TiO 2 into periodic IO PCBs structure provided a systematic insight on the design of novel photocatalysts.

Enhanced fluorescence sensing of enrofloxacin (ENR) was realized via imprinted responsive inverse opal polymers (RIOPs) by the slow photon effect. Dropropizine, as a dummy template, was adopted instead of ENR to overcome the background interference. Unlike conventional planar-surface RIOPs, curved-surface RIOPs were prepared with crystal moldings formed on the inner face of glass bottles, which showed symmetrical reflective colors perpendicular to the bottle axis. Four RIOPs were prepared, which were named as M170, M200, M220, and M240. M220 had the largest enhancement effect, with a factor of 1.68 times compared with bare ENR solution. This could be related to its better bandgap definition and a slightly large overlap with the ENR emission spectrum. Due to the imprinting effect and enhancement range of the blue band edge, M220 could selectively detect ENR without signals toward the two analogues flumequine and dropropizine. It was also found that the enhancement was most prominent at pH 5.5 in an acetonitrile-acetate ammonium buffer. After incubation with M220, higher slope for the working curve could be obtained, but with a similar detection limit. Probably, the current measurement setup produced the deviation. This study provides the verification for fluorescence enhancement of the ENR target by adsorption on the dummy template-imprinted RIOPs.

New ternary composites based on three dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SrTiO 3 (CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 ) were prepared and used as photocatalysts in visible light (λ > 420 nm) photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution. Through optimizing the pore size of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 materials and the loading amounts of Au and CdS , CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300), templated by 300 nm sized poly(methyl methacrylate) colloids, was found to exhibit a remarkably enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate (2.74 mmol/h⋅g), which was 3.2 times as high as that of CdS/Au/C-SrTiO 3 catalyst based on commercial SrTiO 3 . This notably enhanced photocatalytic performance was mainly attributed to the slow photon enhancement effect of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300) material, which significantly promoted the light harvesting efficiency of ternary composite for the slow photon region of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300) was well matched with the optical absorption band of photocatalyst. Further depositing Pt nanoparticles on CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 (300) composite as a co-catalyst, an extraordinarily high hydrogen evolution rate (up to 5.46 mmol/g⋅h) and apparent quantum efficiency (42.2% at 420 nm) were achieved because of the synergistic effect of efficient carrier separation, Au SPR effect, and slow photon effect. Furthermore, these ternary CdS/Au/3DOM-SrTiO 3 composite photocatalysts were very stable and could be easily recycled four times in visible light photocatalytic water splitting experiments without any loss in activity.

Herein, ZnO based materials are modified to narrow the photonic band gap, improved utilization rate of visible light and recombination efficiency of photoexcited carriers for the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). For this purpose, a photonic crystal (PC) heterojunction was constructed comprising of nitrogen (N) doped cadmium sulfide (CdS) coupled with ZnO (CdS-N/ZnO) via sacrificial template and multilayer in-situ deposition methods. The constructed PC junction acted as photocatalyst for the effective degradation of TCH under visible light by synergistically promoting the separation efficiency of electron-hole pairs, narrowing the band gap and broadening the light absorption spectrum of ZnO. Moreover, a slow light effect was achieved by adjusting the band gap of the PC overlapped with the wavelength of incident light, which finally enhanced the light harvesting performance of the CdS-N/ZnO photocatalyst. The optimized PC CdS-N/ZnO composites exhibited efficient TCH removal rate of 97.0 % in 90 min and kb as 4.00–15.17 times that of other reported catalysts. Moreover, PC CdS-N/ZnO catalyst achieved 45.2 % mineralization rates reached in 120 min with high stability and reusability for six cycles. HPLC-MS method was used for monitoring the intermediates of TCH degradation, and also analyzing the possible pathways of products. In addition, the toxicity of TCH and its intermediates were also investigated, which showed that the toxicity has effectively been alleviated. The photocatalytic mechanism endowed that ·O 2 – and h + are the major active free radicals in the photocatalytic degradation process, and the electron transport path is type Ⅱ heterostructure. This work will thus envisage a novel vision of designing ZnO photocatalysts for the antibiotic degradation in the practical application of wastewater treatment.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers potential for combating bacterial infections through the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, the antibacterial efficiency of PDT is largely impeded by the limited photon absorption of photosensitizers and the short diffusion length and lifespan of ROS. Herein, we present a light-harvesting platform based on l -arginine-modified photonic hydrogels loaded with new indocyanine green (PG@Arg/IR820) for synergizing the slow photon effect with NO gas therapy to enhance PDT antibacterial efficiency. Upon near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation, PG@Arg/IR820 can maximize the utilization of photons via the slow photon effect to generate sufficient ROS, which not only acts as the primary bactericidal agent in PDT but also triggers l -arginine to generate NO. NO exhibits a long diffusion distance and lifespan and can freely diffuse to inhibit distant bacterial growth, demonstrating a vital complementary advantage in bacterial inactivation by ROS. The synergistic effect of the slow photon effect combined with NO gas therapy allows PG@Arg/IR820 to intensify bacterial destruction and enhance PDT antibacterial efficiency. This antibacterial system sheds light on an advisable design principle for efficient antibacterial activities in photodynamic inactivation.

The core-shell shaped Pt@CdS nanoparticles were successful anchored onto the surface of three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) SrTiO 3 with different pore sizes through a two-step photo-deposition method, to form a series of promising Z-scheme Pt@CdS/3DOM-SrTiO 3 composites for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water splitting. The well-ordered inverse opal and ternary heterojunction structure of Pt@CdS/3DOM-SrTiO 3 composites were well illustrated through SEM and HRTEM characterizations. The Pt@CdS/3DOM-SrTiO 3 composites exhibited excellent efficiency for hydrogen evolution (57.9 mmol/g h) under UV–vis light irradiation. Through a series of controlled experiments and related characterizations, the notably enhanced catalytic performance of Pt@CdS/3DOM-SrTiO 3 composites can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of the slow photon enhancement of 3DOM-SrTiO 3 , which significantly promotes the light harvesting efficiency of photocatalysts, and the enhanced separation of photogenerated carriers because of the Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism. In addition, the ternary Pt@CdS/3DOM-SrTiO 3 catalysts are very stable and can be recycled five times without any decrease in photocatalytic activity.

Developing photocatalysts with high activity and selectivity remains a significant challenge in the field of CO 2 photoreduction for producing valuable chemical or fuel products under mild conditions. Herein, photonic crystal (PC) GDY-Cu/ZnO was constructed through the in-situ induced growth of graphdiyne (GDY) on PC Cu/ZnO surface via H 2 -reduction for efficient photoreduction of CO 2 to CH 4 . With the aid of photonic crystal structure, PC GDY-Cu/ZnO exhibits a distinctive red-edge slow light region which can significantly improve the utilization efficiency of visible light and intensify photo-catalysis. Additionally, the formed all-solid-state Z-scheme system efficiently accelerates photoelectron migration, facilitating e - /h + separation. Thirdly, the surface GDY, along with the enrich oxygen vacancies generated during H 2 reduction, enhances the adsorption and activation toward CO 2 and H 2 O on PC GDY-Cu/ZnO interface. In consequence, PC GDY-Cu/ZnO demonstrates highly photocatalytic conversion of CO 2 to CH 4 , achieving a CH 4 yield of 33.67 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 with 93.3 % selectivity via slow-light-driven photocatalysis CO 2 reduction. This work provides an efficient strategy to modify ZnO for the efficient photoreduction of CO 2 to CH 4 .

Photodynamic therapy is promising for combating bacteria by reactive oxygen species. However, the therapeutic efficiency of photodynamic antibacterial therapy (PDAT) is largely hindered by limited photon absorption and the low quantum yield of photosensitizers. Herein, a novel light-harvesting platform is designed by decorating photosensitizer chlorine e6 (Ce6) into an inverse opal photonic hydrogel (Ce6/IOPG) framework for efficient light utilization to enhance PDAT. It is shown that the generating efficiency of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) can be tuned by the relative positions of the photonic bandgap (PBG) of IOPG and the absorption band of Ce6. The coupling of the slow photon effect with the efficient dispersion of Ce6 allows for a maximum generation of 1 O 2 of approximately 69.5-fold and markedly enhances PDAT activity upon low light irradiation when the blue edge of PBG overlaps with the absorption band of Ce6. Particularly, slow photons at the blue edge show advantages in improving 1 O 2 generation compared to those at the red edge. The variation in 1 O 2 generation by altering the incident angle of light provides direct evidence for the slow photon effect in Ce6/IOPG. This work provides insights into blue-edge slow photons in photodynamic enhancement and offers an advisable design principle for efficient antibacterial therapy.

The design and fabrication of photonic crystals with multiple optical states are significant and urgently desired. However, most conventional photonic crystals with scalable potential display only a single structural color mode, limiting their practical application. Herein, we successfully achieved a new type of dual-mode photonic crystal films through the co-assembly of polymer colloidal core@shell nanoparticles and InP@ZnS quantum dots at room temperature. The co-assembly process was completed with high efficiency by a powerful assembly technique called molecule-mediated shearing-induced assembly technique (MSAT). The obtained dual-mode photonic crystal films possessed two distinct optical states, including a structural color mode and a fluorescent color mode. The advantages of both photonic band gaps and fluorescence emission were synchronously integrated, exhibiting bright structural colors and vibrant fluorescent colors under sunlight irradiation and ultraviolet excitation, respectively. The switch of the two optical states was highly reversible and stable. Besides, we also found that the dual-mode photonic crystal films realized enhanced fluorescent emission from the slow photon effect, and the relationship between the fluorescence enhancement effect and order degrees of dual-mode PC films was studied. Finally, the dual-mode photonic crystal films were employed to design a visual coding-decoding system, and also as raw materials to produce anti-counterfeiting photonic paints. All the experiments provided a novel insight for achieving multiple optical states within a single system, creating opportunities for extending the application of photonic crystals in the realm of information storage, anti-counterfeiting, response materials, and pattern display.
