Flexible and wearable electronics has presented an opportunity to evolve our society into an intelligent world. Especially for biomechanical sensing and gesture recognition, wearable devices are quite indispensable. Here, we present a nestable arched triboelectric nanogenerator (NA-TENG), which can be wore on fingers, acting as a large deflection biomechanical sensor and energy harvester . With arched structure, the sensor can detect large bending angle of fingers with good stability. Meanwhile, the NA-TENG devices can be assembled like matryoshka, which greatly increases the extensibility for optimizing output performance of the NA-TENG, and provides a convenient method to regulate characteristics of TENG devices in wearable applications.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), which can extensively harvest environmental mechanical energy, have long been restricted by their motion patterns, surface electric charges, and other factors. In this work, a TENG that cooperates with the vertical contact separation mode TENG (CS-TENG) and the lateral sliding mode TENG (LS-TENG) is proposed. This hybrid mode TENG can effectively improve the output power of the independent mode TENG. In the experiment, CS-TENG and LS-TENG are integrated to work together. In this way, the open circuit voltage of the hybrid mode TENG is determined by the CS-TENG, and the peak-to-peak open circuit voltage of the hybrid TENG can reach 1169 V. The unidirectional short-circuit current of CS-TENG is about 80 μA. The unidirectional short-circuit current of the LS-TENG is about 27 μA. But the unidirectional short-circuit current of the hybrid TENG can reach 187 μA. The self-powered human motion sensors based on CS-TENG were designed for detecting signals of finger bending, gait and somatic joint bending. It can clearly identify the motion signals of different parts, which could provide effective information for post-rehabilitation training of patients with limb injuries, as well as smart medical care.

Bioinspired hydrogels have promising prospects in applications such as wearable devices, human health monitoring equipment, and soft robots due to their multifunctional sensing properties resembling natural skin. However, the preparation of intelligent hydrogels that provide feedback on multiple electronic signals simultaneously, such as human skin receptors, when stimulated by external contact pressure remains a substantial challenge. In this study, we designed a bioinspired hydrogel with multiple conductive capabilities by incorporating carbon nanotubes into a chelate of calcium ions with polyacrylic acid and sodium alginate. The bioinspired hydrogel consolidates self-healing ability, stretchability, 3D printability, and multiple conductivities. It can be fabricated as an integrated strain sensor with simultaneous piezoresistive and piezocapacitive performances, exhibiting sensitive (gauge factor of 6.29 in resistance mode and 1.25 kPa–1 in capacitance mode) responses to subtle pressure changes in the human body, such as finger flexion, knee flexion, and respiration. Furthermore, the bioinspired strain sensor sensitively and discriminatively recognizes the signatures written on it. Hence, we expect our ideas to provide inspiration for studies exploring the use of advanced hydrogels in multifunctional skin-like smart wearable devices.

Conductive hydrogels with tunable multifunctionality show great potential in wearable smart devices. In this work, inspired by the nano-structured architecture strategy and natural mussel adhesive mechanism, a conductive hydrogel (AgPMP hydrogel) was fabricated through facile direct in situ polymerization. Silver nanowires (Ag NWs) and polydopamine (PDA) chains were integrated into the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) (P(NIPAM-co-AM)) gel matrix, with activated PNIPAM microgels (MGs) serving as nano-crosslinkers. The overall internal structure of the hydrogel presented a heterogeneous cross-linked mesh-like structure with numerous irregular wrinkles. The AgPMP hydrogel demonstrated significantly enhanced mechanical strength, achieving a remarkable stretchability of 1140% attributed to the nano-microstructured architecture built using AM-based networks, nano-crosslinkers and Ag NWs. Moreover, due to the synergistic effect of PDA and Ag NWs, the hydrogel exhibited impressive photothermal antibacterial activity. Meanwhile, in the presence of abundant active catechol groups, this hydrogel possessed adequate tissue-adhesive and self-healing abilities as well as good antioxidant properties. Notably, the AgPMP hydrogel exhibited outstanding strain-sensitive conductivity. The resultant strain sensor showed high sensitivity with a gauge factor (GF) of up to 8.35 at a strain of 250%. The stable response signals during continuous and gradual cycling proved its electrical durability and stability. Combined with the great merits of the above performance, this sensor holds great promise for detecting human movements. The relative resistance change ranged from 16% to 64% as the finger bending angle changed from 30° to 90°. Thanks to its simple fabrication process, this multifunctional conductive hydrogel is expected to have widespread potential applications in tissue engineering, soft electronic skin and human-health monitoring.
