This study systematically investigates the ultraviolet-assisted direct ink writing (UV-DIW) process, focusing on the influence of critical parameters, including UV intensity, the ratio of printing speed to ink extrusion rate ( v P / v E $v_{P} / v_{E}$ ), and relative nozzle height ( H / h ), on filament fusion and structural morphology. The rheological behavior of photosensitive resin ink is analyzed, revealing that UV irradiation induces a fluid-to-solid transition critical for shape retention and structural integrity. The results demonstrate that UV intensity plays a pivotal role in controlling filament fusion, with insufficient curing causing filament sagging and excessive fusion, while higher UV intensities improve structural fidelity. Additionally, printability (Pr), calculated from cross-sectional analysis, is used as a quantitative metric to assess filament fusion quality and structure preservation. Parameter phase diagrams are developed to visually map the relationships among printing variables, providing a framework for optimizing UV-DIW conditions. The successful fabrication of dense solid blocks without filament interfaces highlights the potential of UV-DIW for producing high-quality, defect-free 3D structures. This work provides valuable insights into parameter tuning, paving the way for advanced applications in manufacturing, biomedical engineering, and material science.

Fixed partial dentures are the primary treatment for dentition defects. Digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing technology is an advanced technique with significant advantages and potential in the field of dental restoration, particularly in cases requiring high precision and personalization. However, challenges persist in printing fixed partial dentures that meet the strength requirements for clinical applications. In this study, we aimed to optimize printing parameters, including exposure time and layer thickness, to enhance dimensional accuracy, reduce warpage, and improve the surface quality of the samples. Additionally, we focused on the rheological and curing properties of the paste. The optimal combination of printing parameters was found to be 5 s of exposure time and 50 μm layer thickness, achieving superior dimensional accuracy, reduced warpage, and improved surface quality. For a slurry with 40% solid content, the dispersant KOS 110 demonstrated the best shear thinning effect, with an optimal addition of 2%. Notably, the Vickers hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of the ZrO 2 fixed partial dentures were 13.52 ± 0.21 GPa, 940 ± 20 MPa, and 6.92 ± 0.25 MPa·m1/2, respectively, which surpasses that of human enamel (4 GPa) and is comparable to CAD/CAM ZrO 2 (900–1200 MPa). This study demonstrates that DLP technology can be effectively used to fabricate ZrO 2 personalized complex fixed partial dentures with excellent mechanical properties and high precision, offering broad application prospects in stomatology.

Direct-ink writing (DIW) 3D printing technology has the advantages of simple process and high efficiency, and enables the molding of materials at room temperature. These characteristics make DIW technology widely applicable in the field of monolithic molding. In this study, a composite slurry of SiO 2 and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was molded using direct-ink writing 3D printing technology. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric were used to analyze the structure and thermal characteristics of the composites. Additionally, the study investigated the extrusion flow under different pressures and the impact of ink formula on their rheological behavior and printability, along with an examination of the effects of printing parameters on the mechanical properties of the monolithic structures. The results indicate that the tensile strength of the dumbbell-shaped specimen increases with greater sample density and reduced nozzle diameter. At a filling angle of ±45°, the void rate is minimal, and the tensile strength reaches a maximum of 1.73 MPa. The tensile strength is maximum when the nozzle diameter is 0.8 mm. On the other hand, the compressive strength of the specimen is directly proportional to the layer thickness – it increases upon reducing the layer thickness. When the layer thickness is 0.3 mm, the compressive strength reaches 0.13 MPa. This study provides insights into direct-ink writing 3D printing technology and its relationship with the mechanical properties of SiO 2 /PEI composites monolithic structures. Highlights Self-standing fumed silica/polyethyleneimine (PEI) composite monoliths were shaped by Direct Ink Writing (DIW) technology. The impact of composite slurry composition on their rheological behavior and printability was examined. Printing parameters effects on mechanical properties of monolithic structures assessed. Significant insights into the relationship between extrusion pressure and forming structure of the composite monoliths are revealed by our research, thereby contributing to the optimization of printing processes.
