Efficient 3D printing via photooxidation of ketocoumarin based photopolymerization

Zhao Xiaoyu,Zhao Ye,Li Ming-De,Li Zhong’an,Peng Haiyan,Xie Tao,Xie Xiaolin

Photopolymerization-based three-dimensional (3D) printing can enable customized manufacturing that is difficult to achieve through other traditional means. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to achieve efficient 3D printing due to the compromise between print speed and resolution. Herein, we report an efficient 3D printing approach based on the photooxidation of ketocoumarin that functions as the photosensitizer during photopolymerization, which can simultaneously deliver high print speed (5.1 cm h −1 ) and high print resolution (23 μm) on a common 3D printer. Mechanistically, the initiating radical and deethylated ketocoumarin are both generated upon visible light exposure, with the former giving rise to rapid photopolymerization and high print speed while the latter ensuring high print resolution by confining the light penetration. By comparison, the printed feature is hard to identify when the ketocoumarin encounters photoreduction due to the increased lateral photopolymerization. The proposed approach here provides a viable solution towards efficient additive manufacturing by controlling the photoreaction of photosensitizers during photopolymerization.

The Research on Multi-Material 3D Vascularized Network Integrated Printing Technology

Shuai Yang,Hao Tang,Chunmei Feng,Jianping Shi,Jiquan Yang

Three-dimensional bioprinting has emerged as one of the manufacturing approaches that could potentially fabricate vascularized channels, which is helpful to culture tissues in vitro. In this paper, we report a novel approach to fabricate 3D perfusable channels by using the combination of extrusion and inkjet techniques in an integrated manufacture process. To achieve this, firstly we investigate the theoretical model to analyze influencing factors of structural dimensions of the printed parts like the printing speed, pressure, dispensing time, and voltage. In the experiment, photocurable hydrogel was printed to form a self-supporting structure with internal channel grooves. When the desired height of hydrogel was reached, the dual print-head was switched to the piezoelectric nozzle immediately, and the sacrificial material was printed by the changed nozzle on the printed hydrogel layer. Then, the extrusion nozzle was switched to print the next hydrogel layer. Once the printing of the internal construct was finished, hydrogel was extruded to wrap the entire structure, and the construct was immersed in a CaCl2solution to crosslink. After that, the channel was formed by removing the sacrificial material. This approach can potentially provide a strategy for fabricating 3D vascularized channels and advance the development of culturing thick tissues in vitro.Keywords:three-dimensional bioprinting;vascularized channels;extrusion-based printing;drop-based printing;hydrogel;perfusion

Printing depth modeling, printing process quantification and quick-decision of printing parameters in micro-vat polymerization

Yue Wang,Yancheng Wang,Chenhao Mao,Deqing Mei

Vat photopolymerization is a widely employed additive manufacturing (AM) technique that commonly applying a digital light processing (DLP) light engine to provide a patterned light source. Notably, printing extreme-size structures is challenging, and the selection of printing parameters was currently highly reliant on repeatable trial-and-error experiments. In this work, a theoretical model for curing depth prediction was established by observing the effect of light intensity. A correction factor n was introduced to optimize the relationship among the critical curing energy, exposure time, and light intensity. Forming experiments verified the accuracy of the proposed theoretical curing depth prediction model, and a correction factor n equal to 0.75 was obtained. Optical rheological characterization experiments and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) supported the quantitative characterization of the DLP printing process while revealing a stepwise transition during photocuring. Finally, a guidance for quick selection of the optimal curing time for 3D structure was obtained and applied to the high-precision microstructure printing process. High-fidelity microneedle arrays with 12 μm details were printed. This method of rapid selection of printing parameters and printing microstructures with high-precision details can potentially be used in the field of 3D bioprinting.

Vat Photopolymerization Additive Manufacturing of WC-Co Hardmetals Enabled by In Situ Polymerization-Induced Microencapsulation

Zhanhe Liu,Zirui Liu,Kechao Zhou,Zihang Chen,Kaihua Shi,Xinyu Wang,Chaoqun Peng,Richu Wang,Shlomo Magdassi,Jin He,Xiaofeng Wang

The additive manufacturing of hardmetals has attracted great attention recently but faces significant challenges in low printing resolution and low mechanical strength. Herein, the fabrication of hardmetal parts with complex structures and high surface quality by vat photopolymerization assisted with a sintering process has been achieved. This was enabled by in situ polymerization-induced microencapsulation of WC powder, which simultaneously enhances the photocuring ability and sedimentation stability of the WC-Co slurry. The WC powder is microencapsulated by a polystyrene (PS, WC@PS) coating with a thickness of ∼20 nm. The curing depth of the WC-Co slurry with WC@PS was dramatically increased from 32 to 336 μm compared to the slurry with original WC, exhibiting an average increment of 650%. The 3D-printed hardmetal parts exhibited a relative density of 99.5%, a Rockwell hardness of 86.9 HRA, and a surface roughness Ra of 2.26 μm, approaching the theoretical limits in classical powder metallurgy-derived WC-Co hardmetal parts. With high density and hardness, it is shown that a printed drilling bit can easily drill through metal sheets. This work paves a path for the vat photopolymerization 3D printing of miniature complex hardmetal components combined with high surface quality and high performance.

3D Printing of Individualized Microfluidic Chips with DLP-Based Printer

Jingjiang Qiu,Junfu Li,Zhongwei Guo,Yudong Zhang,Bangbang Nie,Guochen Qi,Xiang Zhang,Jiong Zhang,Ronghan Wei

Microfluidic chips have shown their potential for applications in fields such as chemistry and biology, and 3D printing is increasingly utilized as the fabrication method for microfluidic chips. To address key issues such as the long printing time for conventional 3D printing of a single chip and the demand for rapid response in individualized microfluidic chip customization, we have optimized the use of DLP (digital light processing) technology, which offers faster printing speeds due to its surface exposure method. In this study, we specifically focused on developing a fast-manufacturing process for directly printing microfluidic chips, addressing the high cost of traditional microfabrication processes and the lengthy production times associated with other 3D printing methods for microfluidic chips. Based on the designed three-dimensional chip model, we utilized a DLP-based printer to directly print two-dimensional and three-dimensional microfluidic chips with photosensitive resin. To overcome the challenge of clogging in printing microchannels, we proposed a printing method that combined an open-channel design with transparent adhesive tape sealing. This method enables the rapid printing of microfluidic chips with complex and intricate microstructures. This research provides a crucial foundation for the development of microfluidic chips in biomedical research.Keywords:3D printing;microfluidic chips;DLP;direct printing;open channel design

Dynamic Boronate Ester Chemistry Facilitating 3D Printing Interlayer Adhesion and Modular 4D Printing of Polylactic Acid

Wenjun Peng,Hanxin Xia,Jingjun Wu,Zizheng Fang,Xianming Zhang

3D printing, such as fused deposition modeling (FDM), is an advanced 3D shaping technology, employing a layer-by-layer process to construct 3D objects. However, the weak interlayer bonding restricts the performance and functionality of FDM-fabricated parts. Herein, boronate bond exchange is utilized to enhance interlayer mechanical strength and enable modular 4D printing of polylactic acid (PLA). Blending the dynamic system endows PLA with improved interlayer adhesion and welding capabilities. The blended filaments demonstrate excellent printability, with a 150% enhancement in Z-axis interlayer strength, while nearly unchanged along the X-axis. Moreover, this enhanced interlayer bonding facilitates the modular assembly of intricate structures, eliminating the need for traditional 3D-printed supports. Combined with shape memory effects, diverse modular 4D printing possibilities are demonstrated. This strategy highlights the potential of dynamic covalent bonds in 3D printing, enhancing not only material performance but also intelligent designs.

Systematic optimization of silicon nitride slurries for high-precision photopolymerization 3D printing

Muhammad Saqib,Weilong Ren,Qumail Arshad,Ali Asghar,Mohsin Raza,Muhammad Hamza,Zhangwei Chen

Silicon nitride ceramics demonstrate significant promise for additive manufacturing, particularly in the fabrication of complex geometries. However, challenges such as a high refractive index and natural hydrophilicity hinder the stability and printability of Si 3 N 4 slurries for vat photopolymerization-based stereolithography. This study addresses these limitations by optimizing slurry parameters, including viscosity, sedimentation stability, and curing depth, to enhance printing performance. A systematic investigation was conducted using the Taguchi method to analyze the effect of solid content, dispersant concentration, and resin ratio on slurry behaviors. Rheological analysis revealed shear-thinning behavior in all tested slurries, a characteristic that facilitates smooth and uniform layer deposition during printing. Sedimentation and stability tests over 50 days identified a slurry formulation with 50 vol% solid content, 3 wt% dispersants, and a 1:2 resin ratio as optimal for minimizing sedimentation and ensuring homogeneity. Curing depth analysis indicated that increased solid content reduces light penetration due to scattering, necessitating a carefully balanced formulation. The addition of E51 resin enhanced light penetration and slurry uniformity, optimizing the curing process. The optimized slurry formulations enabled the precise 3D printing of complex green bodies, achieving excellent layer adhesion and dimensional accuracy. This study establishes a detailed framework for enhancing the printability of Si 3 N 4 slurries, addressing key challenges associated with viscosity, stability, and curing behavior, and advancing the application of non-oxide ceramic in additive manufacturing.

Xue Wan,Hongqiu Wei,Fenghua Zhang,Yanju Liu,Jinsong Leng

Four-dimensional (4D) printing of shape memory materials has attracted increasing interests for personalized structures. In this study, a biocompatible poly( d , l -lactide- co -trimethylene carbonate) (PLMC) is utilized to fabricate 4D shape-changing structures with customized geometries through direct ink writing. The printed objects show shape transformations at different dimensions under thermal programming. The influence of the printing parameters on the properties including rheological, solvent evaporation, and static mechanical behavior are systematically investigated. A printing map is further depicted to achieve high-quality printing with high viscous ink flowed from micronozzle to construct various structures. The printed structures in one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional (3D) exhibit shape-changing behavior with fast response around body temperature. The fast responsive time shows potential in the field of surgical suture (4 s), nonwoven fabric (3 s), and self-expandable stent (35 s). The feasibility of 3D printing of PLMC opens the way for applications in shape-changing devices with small diameter. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2019 , 136 , 48177.

Spider-Inspired Multicomponent 3D Printing Technique for Next-Generation Complex Biofabrication

You Zhou,Shenglong Liao,Xinglei Tao,Xiao-Qi Xu,Quan Hong,Di Wu,Yapei Wang

The shortage of tissue resources is currently a serious challenge that limits the clinical therapy to patients with tissue loss or end-stage organ failure. The booming development of 3D printing offers unprecedented hope for tissue engineering since it can construct cells and biomaterials into a 3D tissue-mimicking object with precise control over size and shape. However, it is still challenging to fabricate artificial living tissues or organs due to the extreme complexity of biological tissues. Herein, we propose a new concept of spider-inspired 3D printing technique (SI-3DP) for continuous multicomponent 3D printing based on in situ gelation at a multibarrel printing nozzle. The printing process allows for rapid construction of 3D architectures composed of different inks in the desired position. To present the potential in biomedical applications, the SI-DIP also prints vessel-like hollow hydrogel microfibers and cell-laden hollow fibers, indicating good biocompatibility of this technique. The newly developed SI-3DP technique is envisioned to promote the development of next-generation complex biofabrication.

Hybrid three-dimensional printing and encapsulation process for cellulose hydrogel sensors

Zhengqiang Guo,Weigui Xie,Wangyu Liu

The advancement of three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has further promoted the scientific progression of hydrogels within the realm of wearable devices. However, when the viscosity of the hydrogel precursor is large but does not meet the self-supporting requirements, or lacks the participation of monomer with gel phase change characteristics, the 3D printing preparation of hydrogels often becomes difficult. This study delves into a novel 3D printing method aimed at combining direct ink writing (DIW) with vat photopolymerization (VPP) to achieve a broad spectrum of adjustable mechanical properties by introducing cellulose as a medium to modulate both the mechanical and rheological properties of hydrogels. This hybrid method facilitates the efficacious printing preparation of low-viscosity hydrogels, thereby mitigating the stringent viscosity prerequisites inherent in printable hydrogels. Furthermore, the employment of a dual-core coaxial printing technique for the hybrid printing of hydrogel and elastomer serves to ameliorate hydrogel water loss predicaments. As a result, this new 3D printing method broadens the mechanical properties of printable hydrogels and the adjustable range of system viscosity. At the same time, it realizes the integrated printing of encapsulation layer, and improves the service life of hydrogels, and can be applied to the hydrogel-based sensors.

3D printing of a poly(vinyl alcohol)-based nano-composite hydrogel as an artificial cartilage replacement and the improvement mechanism of printing accuracy

Yeqiao Meng,Jinlong Cao,Yue Chen,Yaru Yu,Lin Ye

Inspired by the gradient structure of articular cartilage, a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based composite hydrogel with a biomimetic gradient structure as an artificial cartilage replacement was constructed by an extrusion 3D printing technique. The influence of the concentration and composition of the PVA-based solution on its rheological behavior and printability was studied, and the improvement mechanism for the 3D printing accuracy of the hydrogel was explored: introduction of GO or GO–HA gave rise to weakened inter-molecular hydrogen bonds and reduced entanglement density simultaneously, and the dynamic viscosity was highly improved. Therefore, the solution exhibited enhanced shear-thinning behavior in the printing shear rate range and a reduced Barus effect, thus highly improving the printability and printing accuracy of the samples. The 3D printing of PVA hydrogels was successfully achieved, and the printed biomimetic gradient samples possessed suitable compressive and tribological properties, which showed promising potential in the precise customized repair of artificial cartilage.

Soumitra Das,Jeyapriya Thimukonda Jegadeesan,Bikramjit Basu

Tissue engineering for injured tissue replacement and regeneration has been a subject of investigation over the last 30 years, and there has been considerable interest in using additive manufacturing to achieve these goals. Despite such efforts, many key questions remain unanswered, particularly in the area of biomaterial selection for these applications as well as quantitative understanding of the process science. The strategic utilization of biological macromolecules provides a versatile approach to meet diverse requirements in 3D printing, such as printability, buildability, and biocompatibility. These molecules play a pivotal role in both physical and chemical cross-linking processes throughout the biofabrication, contributing significantly to the overall success of the 3D printing process. Among the several bioprintable materials, gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) has been widely utilized for diverse tissue engineering applications, with some degree of success. In this context, this review will discuss the key bioengineering approaches to identify the gelation and cross-linking strategies that are appropriate to control the rheology, printability, and buildability of biomaterial inks. This review will focus on the GelMA as the structural (scaffold) biomaterial for different tissues and as a potential carrier vehicle for the transport of living cells as well as their maintenance and viability in the physiological system. Recognizing the importance of printability toward shape fidelity and biophysical properties, a major focus in this review has been to discuss the qualitative and quantitative impact of the key factors, including microrheological, viscoelastic, gelation, shear thinning properties of biomaterial inks, and printing parameters, in particular, reference to 3D extrusion printing of GelMA-based biomaterial inks. Specifically, we emphasize the different possibilities to regulate mechanical, swelling, biodegradation, and cellular functionalities of GelMA-based bio(material) inks, by hybridization techniques, including different synthetic and natural biopolymers, inorganic nanofillers, and microcarriers. At the close, the potential possibility of the integration of experimental data sets and artificial intelligence/machine learning approaches is emphasized to predict the printability, shape fidelity, or biophysical properties of GelMA bio(material) inks for clinically relevant tissues.
