Cooperative transport by flocking phototactic micromotors

Jianhua Zhang,Fangzhi Mou,Zhen Wu,Jiaqi Song,Joshua E. Kauffman,Ayusman Sen,Jianguo Guan

Cargo delivery by micro/nanomotors provides enormous opportunities for micromanipulation, environmental cleaning, drug delivery, etc. However, due to the limited driving force, it is usually difficult for single micro/nanomotors to transport cargoes much larger or heavier than themselves. Here, we demonstrate that flocking phototactic TiO2 micromotors can cooperatively transport multiple and different types of large cargoes based on light-responsive diffusiophoresis. Utilizing spontaneous diffusiophoretic attraction, flocking TiO2 micromotors can load large cargoes. Under UV light navigation, flocking TiO2 micromotors cooperatively carry and transport cargoes via collective diffusiophoretic repulsion in open space or complex microenvironments. After reaching the destination, the carried cargoes can also be unloaded from the flock and be deployed at a predetermined destination by disassembling or reversing the flock. This study may pave the way for developing intelligent swarming micro/nanorobots for cooperative targeting micromanipulation and advancing their applications in drug delivery and microengineering.

A phototactic micromotor based on platinum nanoparticle decorated carbon nitride

Zhenrong Ye,Yunyu Sun,Hui Zhang,Bo Song,Bin Dong

In this paper, we report a unique phototactic (both positive and negative) micromotor based on platinum nanoparticle decorated carbon nitride. The phototaxis relies on the self-diffusiophoretic mechanism and different surface modifications. The micromotor reported in the current study does not require the addition of any external fuels and shows versatile motion behaviour, i.e. start, stop, directional and programmable motion, which is controlled by light. In addition, since the actuation of the precipitated micromotors at the bottom of a solution using light results in the opacity changes from transparent to translucent, we anticipate that the current micromotor may have potential application in the field of smart windows.

Bioinspired micro/nanomotor with visible light energy–dependent forward, reverse, reciprocating, and spinning schooling motion

Jintao Tong,Dalei Wang,Ye Liu,Xin Lou,Jiwei Jiang,Bin Dong,Renfeng Dong,Mingcheng Yang

In nature, microorganisms could sense the intensity of the incident visible light and exhibit bidirectional (positive or negative) phototaxis. However, it is still challenging to achieve the similar biomimetic phototaxis for the artificial micro/nanomotor (MNM) counterparts with the size from a few nanometers to a few micrometers. In this work, we report a fuel-free carbon nitride (C3N4)/polypyrrole nanoparticle (PPyNP)-based smart MNM operating in water, whose behavior resembles that of the phototactic microorganism. The MNM moves toward the visible light source under low illumination and away from it under high irradiation, which relies on the competitive interplay between the light-induced self-diffusiophoresis and self-thermophoresis mechanisms concurrently integrated into the MNM. Interestingly, the competition between these two mechanisms leads to a collective bidirectional phototaxis of an ensemble of MNMs under uniform illuminations and a spinning schooling behavior under a nonuniform light, both of which can be finely controllable by visible light energy. Our results provide important insights into the design of the artificial counterpart of the phototactic microorganism with sophisticated motion behaviors for diverse applications.

Visible-Light-Driven Water-Fueled Ecofriendly Micromotors Based on Iron Phthalocyanine for Highly Efficient Organic Pollutant Degradation

Jintao Tong,Dalei Wang,Danchen Wang,Fei Xu,Ruomeng Duan,Dafeng Zhang,Jian Fan,Bin Dong

The light-driven micromotor has been demonstrated to have great potential in the environmental remediation field. However, it is still challenging to develop highly efficient, ecofriendly, and visible-light-powered micromotors for organic pollutant degradation. In this paper, we report an ecofriendly micromotor based on iron phthalocyanine (FePc) and gelatin, which exhibits the visible-light-driven self-propulsion behavior using water fuel based on the photocatalytic reaction and self-diffusiophoresis mechanism. Fast motion behavior is observed which induces the rapid agitation of the solution. This, together with the excellent photocatalytic activity, makes the FePc-based micromotor highly efficient when utilized in the degradation of organic pollutants with a normalized reaction rate constant of 2.49 × 10–2 L m–2 s–1, which is by far the fastest and is far superior than the stationary counterpart. The external fuel-free propulsion and the high efficiency in pollutant degradation make the current micromotor potentially attractive for environmental remediation.

Arbitrary Construction of Versatile NIR-Driven Microrobots

Wanyuan Li,Baiyao Liu,Leyan Ou,Gangzhou Li,Dapeng Lei,Ze Xiong,Huihua Xu,Jizhuang Wang,Jinyao Tang,Dan Li

Emerging light-driven micro/nanorobots (LMNRs) showcase profound potential for sophisticated manipulation and various applications. However, the realization of a versatile and straightforward fabrication technique remains a challenging pursuit. This study introduces an innovative bulk heterojunction organic semiconductor solar cell (OSC)-based spin-coating approach, aiming to facilitate the arbitrary construction of LMNRs. Leveraging the distinctive properties of a near-infrared (NIR)-responsive organic semiconductor heterojunction solution, this technique enables uniform coating across various dimensional structures (0D, 1D, 2D, 3D) to be LMNRs, denoted as “motorization.” The film, with a slender profile measuring ≈140 nm in thickness, effectively preserves the original morphology of objects while imparting actuation capabilities exceeding hundreds of times their own weight. The propelled motion of these microrobots is realized through NIR-driven photoelectrochemical reaction-induced self-diffusiophoresis, showcasing a versatile array of controllable motion profiles. The strategic customization of arbitrary microrobot construction addresses specific applications, ranging from 0D microrobots inducing living crystal formation to intricate, multidimensional structures designed for tasks such as microplastic extraction, cargo delivery, and phototactic precise maneuvers. This study advances user-friendly and versatile LMNR technologies, unlocking new possibilities for various applications, signaling a transformative era in multifunctional micro/nanorobot technologies.

Shape-Directed Dynamic Assembly of Active Colloidal Metamachines

Yang Huang,Ling Yang,Sipeng Yang,Hao Chen,Celi Lou,Yunqing Tang,Xiankun Lin,Qiang He

Modularly organizing active micromachines into high-grade metamachines makes a great leap for operating the microscopic world in a biomimetic way. However, modulating the nonreciprocal interactions among different colloidal motors through chemical reactions to achieve the controllable construction of active colloidal metamachines with specific dynamic properties remains challenging. Here, we report the phototactic active colloidal metamachines constructed by shape-directed dynamic self-assembly of chemically driven peanut-shaped TiO2 colloidal motors and Janus spherical Pt/SiO2 colloidal motors. The long-range diffusiophoretic attraction generated by the photocatalytic reaction dominates the sensing and collision of peanut TiO2 motors with Janus Pt/SiO2 motors. The coupling of local chemical concentration gradient fields between the two types of motors generates short-range site-selective interactions, promoting the shape-directed assembly toward active colloidal metamachines with well-defined spatial configurations. Metamachines, made of colloidal motors, exhibit configuration-dependent kinematics. The colloidal metamachines can be reversibly reconstructed by adjusting lighting conditions and can move phototactically along a predetermined path under the structured light field. Such chemically driven colloidal metamachines that integrate multiple active agents provide a significant avenue for fabricating active soft matter materials and intelligent robotic systems with advanced applications.
