Liquid Crystal Elastomer Twist Fibers toward Rotating Microengines

Yunpeng Wang,Jiahao Sun,Wei Liao,Zhongqiang Yang

Untethered twist fibers do not require end-anchoring structures to hold their twist orientation and offer simple designs and convenient operation. The reversible responsiveness of these fibers allows them to generate torque and rotational deformation continuously upon the application of external stimuli. The fibers therefore have potential in rotating microengines. In practical applications, high torque and rotational deformation are desirable to meet work capacity requirements. However, the simultaneous endowment of reversible responsiveness and high rotational performance to untethered twist fibers remains a challenge. In this study, a liquid crystal elastomer twist fiber (LCETF) is designed and developed with a fixed twisting alignment of mesogens to provide untethered and reversible responsiveness. Outstanding rotational performance can be achieved when the mesogenic orientation is disrupted through heat triggering. Owing to the significant intrinsic contractile ratio of the LCE material, the rotational deformation of the LCETF can reach 243.6° mm −1 . More importantly, the specific torque can reach 10.1 N m kg −1 , which exceeds previously reported values. In addition, the LCETF can be exploited in a rotating microengine to convert heat into electricity with an induction voltage as high as 9.4 V. This work broadens the applications of LCEs for energy harvesters, micromachines, and soft robots.

Configurable Phonon Polarization Responses in Twisted α-MoO3

Jindong Bai,Yongsong Wang,Dingbang Yang,Xiao Guo,Yuedong Wang,Tao Xu,Haipeng Xie,Jin Li,Fangping Ouyang,Han Huang

Twisting between layered materials in close proximity causes reconstruction of the electron and crystal structures. The resulting reconstruction has received increasing attention due to the realization of magic-angle superconductivity, moiré excitons, and moiré ferroelectricity. However, demonstrations of such concepts for phonon polarization have been very limited. Here, we reported on the systematic angle-dependent polarized Raman (ADPR) investigations on the twisted bilayer (tBL) α-MoO3 with each layer in a thickness of ∼14 nm. Under 532 and 633 nm excitation, (i) the Raman intensity (I) of representative Mo–Oc symmetric stretching vibration phonon mode (SVPM) at 818 cm–1 and rigid MoO4 translational vibration phonon mode (TVPM) at 156 cm–1 decreases monotonically with the twist angle (φ) increase and (ii) the polar plots of both modes were tuned from axial symmetry to central symmetry by φ increase. The dependence of I and symmetry of both modes on φ were described semiquantitatively by applying the classical Placzek approximation and the interference effect. Our findings unravel the complex interaction between the twisted layer configurations and phonon behaviors of α-MoO3, providing valuable insights into the anomalous phonon polarization responses in low symmetric two-dimensional materials and potentially facilitating the development of technologies based on tunable phonon polarization.

Engineering strong and tough collagen hydrogels and tissue constructs via twisting and crosslinking

Tingting Li,Zixing Zhou,Yang Xie,Wei Cai,Xiaobin Zhu,Yuanbo Jia,Zuoqi Zhang,Feng Xu,Guoyou Huang

Collagen, a primary component of the extracellular matrix (ECM), is crucial for developing biomimetic materials in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. However, the limited mechanical properties of collagen-based biomaterials pose significant challenges for load-bearing biomedical applications. In this study, we address this challenge by introducing a novel twisting and crosslinking (TC) method, inspired by towel dehydration, to rapidly fabricate strong and tough collagen hydrogels. We first induce the densification and alignment of self-assembled collagen hydrogels through twisting (T-Col) and then further improve their mechanical properties via chemical crosslinking (TC-Col). Additionally, three-dimensional cell culture experiments reveal that TC-Col supports high cell viability, spreading, elongation, and alignment. We also demonstrate the formation of higher-order collagen structures with tunable mechanical properties, expanding the versatility of this approach. This study provides a robust strategy for engineering strong and tough collagen hydrogels and tissue constructs, offering new insights into tissue strengthening mechanisms and advanced biomedical applications.

Biomimetic high toughness Si3N4 ceramics with inverse-bouligand structure

Kai Zhang,Yinjie Sun,Yiling Cheng,Sifan Hou,Jinpeng Fan

Inspired by the Bouligand structure in nature, a kind of Inverse-Bouligand structure was designed. Different from the bionic Bouligand structure of a one-dimensional material unit, the inverse-Bouligand structure is obtained by stacking and twisting the ceramic layer with a parallel groove structure. The grooves arranged in parallel are first etched on the ceramic green body and then sintered after stacking and twisting. After sintering, the groove structure can still be maintained, so the resulting laminated twisted groove structure in the bulk forms an inverse-Bouligand structure, which can promote crack deflection and improve the toughness of the material during the fracture process. After testing different twist angles, the results show that when the twist angle is 15°, the toughness of the material can reach 11.22 ± 1.77 MPa m 1/2 , and high strength can be guaranteed. The synergistic effect of interlayer crack deflection and regional crack twist is the main mechanism for the improvement of material toughness.

Large-scale additive fabrication of tough nanocellulose yarns

Yanduo Zhai,Yande Cui,Meng Zhou,Pan Chen,Chunyu Chang,Jinghua Chen

Nanocellulose is a promising candidate for fabricating high-performance cellulosic materials due to its extremely fine structure and excellent mechanical properties. However, converting the extraordinary properties of individual nanofibers to macroscopic fibers through large-scale preparation remains a challenge. Inspired by the staple spun yarns, herein, we demonstrate a facile and scalable strategy for continuously additive fabrication of nanocellulose yarns by twisting stacked short nanocellulose slivers. Benefiting from the wet-stretching and twisting process, the resultant yarns with tightly intertwined cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) exhibit outstanding toughness (42.9MJ   m -‍3 ) and fracture strain (20 %), respectively. Importantly, this approach can be extended to develop functional yarns such as fluorescent yarns, magnetic yarns, and conductive yarns. This work provides a new method for large-scale preparation of tough nanocellulose yarns for future functional materials, such as smart textiles and wearable electronics.

Artificial spider silk from ion-doped and twisted core-sheath hydrogel fibres

Dou Yuanyuan,Wang Zhen-Pei,He Wenqian,Jia Tianjiao,Liu Zhuangjian,Sun Pingchuan,Wen Kai,Gao Enlai,Zhou Xiang,Hu Xiaoyu,Li Jingjing,Fang Shaoli,Qian Dong,Liu Zunfeng

Spider silks show unique combinations of strength, toughness, extensibility, and energy absorption. To date, it has been difficult to obtain spider silk-like mechanical properties using non-protein approaches. Here, we report on an artificial spider silk produced by the water-evaporation-induced self-assembly of hydrogel fibre made from polyacrylic acid and silica nanoparticles. The artificial spider silk consists of hierarchical core-sheath structured hydrogel fibres, which are reinforced by ion doping and twist insertion. The fibre exhibits a tensile strength of 895 MPa and a stretchability of 44.3%, achieving mechanical properties comparable to spider silk. The material also presents a high toughness of 370 MJ m −3 and a damping capacity of 95%. The hydrogel fibre shows only ~1/9 of the impact force of cotton yarn with negligible rebound when used for impact reduction applications. This work opens an avenue towards the fabrication of artificial spider silk with applications in kinetic energy buffering and shock-absorbing.

Multifunctional tension–compression conversion sensing structure inspired by rotating stairs

Pengyang Li,Xu Zhao,Qian Yan,Jinhua Xiong,Renjie Ding,Haowen Zheng,Fuhua Xue,Zhong Chen,Zonglin Liu,He Chen,Zhigong Tang,Qingyu Peng,Xiaodong He

Developing sensors that combine sensitivity and range while detecting multiple physical stimuli is crucial for advancing human–computer interaction. To create a sensor that combines high sensitivity and wide detection range, and can respond to multiple signals, we designed a tension–compression conversion structure (TCS) inspired by the rotating stairs and used the stretchable strain sensor as the sensing unit to realize the detection of pressure and torsion signals. The performance of the multifunctional sensing structure can be designed and predicted by theoretical calculations. The variable stiffness design strategy enables the sensing structure to have satisfactory sensitivity (2.27 N −1 ) and detection range (0.003 ∼ 25.55 N). In addition, the sensing structure can detect the torsion angle within 30° and the torque within 86.4 N·mm, and can work stably in the underwater environment. This tension–compression conversion sensing structure inspired by rotating stairs will provide new ideas for developing multifunctional sensors with both sensitivity and range.

Bistable Joints Enable the Morphing of Hydrogel Sheets with Multistable Configurations

Chen Yu Li,Dejin Jiao,Xing Peng Hao,Wei Hong,Qiang Zheng,Zi Liang Wu

Joints, as a flexing element to connect different parts, are widespread in natural systems. Various joints exist in the body and play crucial roles to execute gestures and gaits. These scenarios have inspired the design of mechanical joints with passive, hard materials, which usually need an external power supply to drive the transformations. The incorporation of soft and active joints provides a modular strategy to devise soft actuators and robots. However, transformations of responsive joints under external stimuli are usually in uni-mode with a pre-determined direction. Here, hydrogel joints capable of folding and twisting transformation in bi-mode are reported, which enable the composite hydrogel to form multiple configurations under constant conditions. These joints have an in-plane gradient structure and comprise stiff, passive gel as the frame and soft, active gel as the actuating unit. Under external stimuli, the response mismatch between different gels leads to out-of-plane folding or twisting deformation with the feature of bistability. These joints can be modularly integrated with other gels to afford complex deformations and multistable configurations. This approach favors selective control of hydrogel's architectures and versatile design of hydrogel devices, as demonstrated by proof-of-concept examples. It shall also merit the development of metamaterials, soft actuators, and robots, etc.

Effects of heat treatments and cross-linking on the crystal structure and torsional properties of polyester fibers

Ya-Jing Cao,Xue-Jie Gai,Wei Li,Hai-Hui Liu,Na Han,Xing-Xiang Zhang

Artificial muscles have attracted great attention as actuators and coiled and twisted monofilament actuators are considered the most promising ones. In the present work, the torsional properties of poly(hexamethylene adipamide) (PA66), poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), and high-strength PET (HTPET) monofilaments were investigated. Furthermore, cross-linked PET (CPET) monofilaments were melt-spun by adding 1 wt% of 2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone (ultraviolet (UV) initiator) and triallyl iso-cyanurate (cross-linking agent) in PET chips under UV radiation. The HTPET monofilaments had the highest torsional modulus of 1.1 GPa followed by the PET (0.8 GPa) and PA66 (0.6 GPa) monofilaments. Subsequently, the HTPET monofilaments were subjected to heat treatments under tension. When the heat treatment time was 10 min, the mechanical properties of the HTPET monofilaments also tended to first increase and then decrease with the rise of heat treatment temperature. The molecular arrangement and crystal structure of the HTPET monofilaments were gradually improved with the prolongation of tension heat treatment. The tensile strength and initial modulus of the HTPET monofilaments were 871.4 MPa and 15.8 GPa, respectively. The mechanical properties of the CPET monofilaments first increased and then decreased with the increase of the drawing ratio. When the drawing ratio was 10, the CPET monofilament had a tensile strength of 717.2 MPa, an initial modulus of 16.7 GPa, and a maximum torsional modulus of 1.3 GPa. Therefore, both heat treatment and cross-linking increased the mechanical strength of the PET monofilaments. CPET and HTPET are possible to be used as artificial muscles.

Strong fibrous filaments nanocellulose crystals prepared by self-twisting microfluidic spinning

Jiabao Wang,Qian Gao,Yuda Wang,Xinliang Liu,Shuangxi Nie

Orderly arranged nanocellulose and its composite materials have low density and excellent mechanical properties. A self-twisted microfluidic chip is designed in this work. Its sheath channel and core channel form a staggered layer structure. This structure can make the Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in the core flow undergo twist during the gel forming process, so that it can be better combined and its mechanical properties can be improved. The degree of orientation and mechanical properties of fiber filaments were studied by wide-angle X-ray scattering and universal tensile testing machine. The orientation degree of the fiber is 0.77, the tensile strength is 400 ± 20 MPa, and the Young ' s modulus is 37.3 ± 3.8 GPa. The torsion angle of fiber surface is 5.5°. The mechanical properties of the filaments are 150% higher than those of a previously reported filament made of pure CNCs. This work demonstrates the possibility of preparing high-strength CNCs fiber filaments.

Twist elastic constant of chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystals determined by tactoid reconfiguration in electric field

Dan Qu,Peijun Zhang,Jiaolong Liu,Yan Xu,Eyal Zussman,Bing Wei

Lyotropic chiral nematic cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have attracted significant attention and great progress has been made. Investigating their physical parameters, especially the twist elastic constant ( K 22 ), is pivotal for advancing our comprehension of fundamental viscoelastic property of chiral nematic phase. In this study, we demonstrate a straightforward method to simultaneously estimate K 22 and helical twisting power ( K t ) of chiral nematic CNCs. This method involves analyzing rheology properties and electro-response of CNCs, focusing on the rotational dynamics and structural reconfiguration of CNC tactoids under an electric field. By examining the rotation dynamics of CNC tactoids under an electric field, together with the viscosity characterization, the anisotropic dielectric susceptibility (∆χ) of chiral nematic CNC along the helix axis was determined. Subsequently, K 22 / ∆χ n was extracted by analyzing CNC tactoid pitch evolution under an electric field, employing the de Gennes model. The K 22 for different concentrated CNCs is finally estimated by integrating experimental results and theory. It is shown that the chiral nematic CNCs present concentration-dependent K 22 , ranging from 0.05 to 0.14 pN, while K t spans from 0.06 to 0.14 pN/μm. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the CNC fundamental viscoelastic property and opens up new avenues for K 22 measurement in other lyotropic liquid crystals.

Bioinspired Construction of Artificial Cardiac Muscles Based on Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers

Yunpeng Wang,Wei Liao,Jiahao Sun,Rajib Nandi,Zhongqiang Yang

Human muscles, including skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscles, are able to perform diverse deformations and execute complex biofunctions stimulated by nerve signals. Similarly, liquid crystal elastomer (LCE), which can respond to external stimuli with large and reversible deformations, demonstrates superior advantages to mimic nature muscles to fabricate artificial muscles. Till now, LCE has been utilized to simulate deformations and related functions of skeletal and smooth muscles. However, limited by the existing fabrication strategy, employing LCE to mimic the motion of cardiac muscles and further realizing the structure-determined pumping functions, is still an open challenge. Learning from the specific spatial arrangements and synergistic actuation of cardiac muscle fibers within human heart, a simple and general strategy to construct artificial cardiac muscles with LCE fibers is proposed. In this work, LCE fibers with similar modulus and actuation behavior to muscle fibers are fabricated and spatially arranged in biological architectures as cardiac muscle fibers. As a result, artificial cardiac muscles are constructed and are able to perform simultaneous contraction and torsion motions, realizing heart-pumping functions. This general strategy should be also applicable for other smart materials to conduct challenging tasks.
