The natural material pectin was used as the matrix to prepare a dust suppressant. The regression model in response to the grafting ratio was established, and the optimum modification scheme was determined. The amount of monomer, initiator, cross-linking agent, and reaction temperature was 3.20 g, 0.20 g, and 0.15 g and 92 °C, respectively. Through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy tests, not only the formation of the product in graft copolymerization reaction was validated but also the wettability of pectin was significantly improved. The surface morphology of pectin before and after modification was observed by a scanning electron microscope. After graft copolymerization treatment, the surface of pectin presented a dense grid structure, which proved that the pectin-modified dust suppressant can play a crucial role in wetting and condensing coal dust. Contact angle tests were used to characterize the effect of pectin modification on the wettability of bituminous coal before and after modification. The results of contact angle tests showed that when the droplets just contacted the bituminous coal flakes, the contact angle of modified pectin droplets on the flakes was the smallest, and the value was 55.21°. Compared with pure water droplets and unmodified pectin droplets, it decreased by 21.66° and 18.50°. The modification reaction process and dust suppression mechanism were explained at the molecular level.

The poor plasticity of coal results in a large amount of dust during the mining process, thereby posing a significant impact on mine safety and the health of workers. In order to address this issue, a method has been proposed to suppress dust by enhancing the plasticity of coal through injecting a reactive material, which forms a colloid within the coal. The results implicated that the self-active colloidal dust suppressant, composed of sodium alginate, gluconolactone, calcium disodium EDTA, and sodium dodecyl sulfate, effectively improved the moisture content of coal seams and decreased the brittleness of coal. Scanning electron microscopy and specific surface area test revealed that the dust suppressant not only tightly adheres to the surface of the coal after the reaction, but also penetrates the coal pores and forms a colloid on both the inner and outer surfaces of the coal. The material is rich in carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, which forms hydrogen bonds with the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups present in coal. This interaction enhances the toughness of coal. Simultaneously, it has the ability to adsorb water and function as a moisturizer. The combined synergistic effect of these mechanisms fundamentally reduces dust production during the coal mining process.

This study aims to develop eco-friendly composite dust suppressants to mitigate the adverse impact of coal mine dust on worker health and the environment. An environmentally friendly dust suppressant with bonding and wetting effects was prepared by combining modified pectin as a binder and a non-toxic surfactant as a wetting agent. Optimal ratios of sodium carboxylate ethoxylate sulfate (LMES), isomeric alcohol ethoxylate (XL-70), and modified pectin were determined through experiments. The modified pectin exhibited stronger wetting properties on coal powder due to its increased hydrophilicity . Wetting performance tests confirmed its excellent performance. Film-forming and scanning electron microscope tests demonstrated the dust suppressant's ability to bond with coal dust, resulting in a smooth surface and closely connected particles. Environmental tests showed its non-toxicity and degradability. Spraying dust reduction tests revealed a significant average increase of 40.51 % in dust reduction rate compared to water spraying, effectively lowering dust concentration. These findings have practical implications for the development of eco-friendly composite dust suppressants and controlling underground dust in coal mines, benefiting worker health and environmental sustainability.

Most dust suppressants used for buildings currently lack sufficient resistance to harsh conditions, such as high temperatures and wind erosion. To solve this problem, it is necessary to develop a new type of dust suppressant. In this study, the guar gum molecule was chemically modified to remove the active hydroxyl group in order to significantly improve the stability and adhesion of guar gum. Eventually, a composite dust suppressant was synthesized by incorporating a surfactant and an absorbent agent into modified guar gum. The functional groups of the reaction products were analyzed via infrared experiments, thus confirming the success of the modification. Wind erosion resistance and scanning electron microscopy experiments confirmed the improved bonding capabilities of the composite dust suppressant with dust particles. In experiments on wind erosion resistance, the dust fixation rate exceeded 50% after the application of the composite dust suppressant. The results of the thermogravimetric tests showed that the maximum mass loss rate of the samples with modified guar gum dust suppressants was 6.0% and 28% lower than those of the samples with unmodified guar gum dust suppressants and water, respectively. Furthermore, the tests conducted on pH value and corrosion resistance indicated that the pH value of this dust suppressant was comparable to that of tap water and demonstrated a similar rate of metal corrosion. The practical significance of this study is to improve the dust suppressant used in buildings, to improve the performance of dust suppressant and resistance to harsh environment, and to help to continuously improve the health of personnel and environmental protection during construction. The practical significance of this study is to improve the dust suppressant used in buildings, to improve the performance of dust suppressant and resistance to harsh environments, and to help to continuously improve the health of personnel and environmental protection during construction, which has positive practical significance for the building industry and related fields.

Tailings dust can negatively affect the surrounding environment and communities because the tailings are vulnerable to wind erosion. In this study, the effects of halides (sodium chloride [NaCl], calcium chloride [CaCl 2 ], and magnesium chloride hexahydrate [MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O]), and polymer materials (polyacrylamide [PAM], polyvinyl alcohol [PVA], and calcium lignosulfonate [LS]) were investigated for the stabilization of tailings for dust control. Erect milkvetch ( Astragalus adsurgens ), ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.), and Bermuda grass ( Cynodon dactylon ) were planted in the tailings and sprayed with chemical dust suppressants. The growth status of the plants and their effects on the mechanical properties of tailings were also studied. The results show that the weight loss of tailings was stabilized by halides and polymers, and decreased with increasing concentration and spraying amount of the solutions. The penetration resistance of tailings stabilized by halides and polymers increased with increasing concentration and spraying amount of the solutions. Among the halides and polymers tested, the use of CaCl 2 and PAM resulted in the best control of tailings dust, respectively. CaCl 2 solution reduces the adaptability of plants and therefore makes it difficult for grass seeds to germinate normally. PAM solutions are beneficial for the development of herbaceous plants. Among the three herbaceous species, ryegrass exhibited the best degree of development and was more suitable for growth in the tailings. The ryegrass plants planted in the tailings sprayed with PAM grew the best, and the root-soil complex that formed increased the shear strength of the tailings.

In order to solve the coal dust pollution generated by open-pit mines, a novel environmentally-friendly poly(vinyl alcohol)/sodium alginate (SA)/glycerol (PVA/SA/GLY) composite dust suppressant was obtained by a simple method in this paper. The formulation of dust suppressant was determined through the orthogonal and single-factor tests. Its properties (viscosity, compressive strength , wetting property, resistance to evaporation and biodegradability) were investigated. The test results indicate that at a temperature of 55 °C, when the masses of PVA , SA, GLY, STMP (as a crosslinking agent) and SDS, APG were 5.5 g, 0.45 g, 4.5 g, 0.12 g, 0.6g and 0.1g respectively, the viscosity (includes 0.6 g SDBS + 0.1 g APG) of the prepared copolymer was 76 mPa s and the compressive strength of cured film of dust suppressant reached up to 26.1 kPa. Compared with water as a dust suppressant (control group), the dust suppressant reported in this paper has good wettability and resistance to evaporation. After the 8th cycle (56 d), the percent of degradation of the dust suppressant pre-buried into the soil was 33%. The dust suppressant in this study has good wetting, moisture retention and degradation performance , which can bring significant economic and social environmental benefits to the field of coal dust control.

Coal dust generation occurs extensively across multiple stages of coal mining, transportation, storage, and application, which seriously affected the health of miners and caused environmental pollution. Consequently, the development of an environmentally friendly, easy-to-apply, and efficient dust suppressant is of paramount importance for improving occupational safety and environmental protection. In this study, a novel environmentally friendly dust suppressant (PSGT) was developed relying on the intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), soluble starch (SS), glycerol (Gly), and Triton X-100. The formulation was optimized through orthogonal experimental design to determine the ideal composition parameters. The physical and chemical properties of the PSGT samples were systematically characterized. The results demonstrated that the PSGT 9 dust suppressant exhibited an extremely short penetration time of merely 10 s, a sedimentation rate reaching 1.5 cm/s, a remarkably high compressive strength of 1.56 MPa for the consolidation layer of coal dust, and a coal dust loss rate of 12 % under a simulated wind speed of 9 m/s. Moreover, the dust suppression effects of deionized water and commercial dust suppressant were compared with those of PSGT dust suppressants, indicating that the PSGT showed better water retention, and dust-solidifying properties. The PSGT dust suppressant exhibited excellent moisture retention, wind erosion resistance, and dust-solidifying properties, etc., which can applicable for dust prevention during coal mining, transport, and storage, enhancing the dust suppression efficiency obviously and showing significant meaning to the sustainable development of the coal mining industry while protecting the environment.
