Novel MoS2–DOPO Hybrid for Effective Enhancements on Flame Retardancy and Smoke Suppression of Flexible Polyurethane Foams

Maoyong Zhi,Quanyi Liu,Yinlong Zhao,Shansong Gao,Zheng Zhang,Yuanhua He

A novel MoS2–DOPO hybrid has been successfully synthesized through the grafting of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) on the surface of MoS2 nanosheets using allyl mercaptan as an intermediate. MoS2–DOPO was used as a flame retardant additive to prepare flame-retardant flexible polyurethane foam (FPUF). The influence of MoS2–DOPO on the mechanical, thermal stability, and flame retardancy properties of FPUF composites were systematically investigated. The incorporation of MoS2–DOPO could not deteriorate greatly the tensile strength and 50% compression set of FPUF composites, but effectively improves the char residue. The cone calorimeter and smoke density tests results revealed that the peak heat release rate, total heat release, and the maximum smoke density of the MoS2–DOPO/FPUF composite were reduced by 41.3, 27.7, and 40.5%, respectively, compared with those of pure FPUF. Furthermore, the char residue after cone calorimeter tests and pyrolysis gaseous products of the MoS2–DOPO/FPUF composite were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry. The results suggested that the MoS2–DOPO hybrid played a synergistic flame retardant effect of gas and condensed bi-phase action. In addition, a possible flame retardancy and smoke suppression mechanism of the MoS2–DOPO/FPUF composite were proposed. This study provides a facile and promising strategy for the fabrication of polymer materials with excellent flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties.

Synergistic effects of a highly effective intumescent flame retardant based on tannic acid functionalized graphene on the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of natural rubber

Lin Li,Xiaolin Liu,Xiaoming Shao,Licong Jiang,Kai Huang,Shuai Zhao

Tannic acid (TA), natural phenolic compounds abundant in many plants, exhibit low flammability and good absorbility because of multidentate properties. Based on it, a novel intumescent flame retardant (IFR) system (AGT) that consists of ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/TA functionalized graphene (TGE) presents synergistic flame retardant and smoke suppression for natural rubber (NR) due to the dual flame retardant functions of each component. The novel AGT system is of interest to a variety of fields because of its distinct flame retardant and relatively good mechanical properties in comparison to traditional IFR system. Cone calorimeter results reveal that the AGT system could clearly change the decomposition behavior of NR and form a highly graphitized and phosphorous-containing carbonaceous structure char layer on the surface of the composites, consequently resulting in synergistic effects on the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties. Moreover, TGE endows NR composite excellent mechanical properties within an effective additive mass of AGT system.

Biobased Phosphorus Siloxane-Containing Polyurethane Foam with Flame-Retardant and Smoke-Suppressant Performances

Shibo Wang,Siheng Wang,Minggui Shen,Xu Xu,He Liu,Dan Wang,Hongxiao Wang,Shibin Shang

Rigid polyurethane foam (RPUF) is one of the most widely used construction materials, but it is flammable and releases toxic smoke during combustion. In this study, a novel, synergistic-effect flame retardant (FPASO-DOPO) was synthesized by the Atherton–Todd reaction of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO) with fumaropimaric acid-based siloxane (FPASO). The obtained FPASO-DOPO was then introduced into the cross-linking network of an RPUF by chemical bonding. The flame retardancy was enhanced by the synergistic effect of phosphorus and silicon in the FPASO-DOPO, which captured the free radical in the gaseous phase and formed a compact silica-rich char layer in the condensed phase. More importantly, the incorporation of FPASO-DOPO not only increased the limiting oxygen index from 17.0% to 26.1% but also reduced the total smoke release by 17.5%. A cone-calorimeter test indicated that the peak heat-release rate of the modified foam was reduced by 33.7% compared with that of neat RPUF. Calculations determined that the flame retardancy index (FRI) value was 7.88 for a modified foam, which shows a “good” flame retardancy. Moreover, the modified foams exhibited improvements in both compressive and flexural strength owing to the introduction of the rosin. This study has important implications for the development of modified polymers with good flame and smoke suppression from renewable resources.

The synergistic flame retardant, smoke suppressant, and thermal degradation properties of spherical CoSn(OH)6 and ammonium polyphosphate on epoxy resin

Liu Fu-Ya,Zhou Xue-Ling,Zhao He,Hu Wei-Dong,Xu Jian-Zhong,Jiao Yun-Hong,Qu Hong-Qiang

The synergistic effect and mechanism of the spherical CoSn(OH) 6 (T-CHS) and ammonium polyphosphate (APP) on epoxy resin (EP) were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical combustion test (UL-94), cone calorimeter, tensile machine, thermogravimetric analysis-coupled with a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TGA/FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectrometer. The results indicate that when the mass ratio of APP and T-CHS is 5.9:0.1 and 5.5:0.5, respectively, there is a synergistic effect between APP and T-CHS, and the flame retardant EP samples could pass the V-0 level of UL-94 test and their tensile properties have little difference to that of the blank EP. Compared with the blank EP, the total heat release and total smoke production of EP/5.9APP/0.1 T-CHS are decreased by 25% and 26%, respectively. TGA/FTIR results of the EP samples under N 2 atmosphere indicate the NH 3 production of EP/5.9APP/0.1 T-CHS is decreased by 47% and the CO 2 and H 2 O production is increased by 991% and 210%, respectively, when compared with that of the blank EP. APP and T-CHS show a good synergistic effect on promoting the retention of C, Co, Sn, and N elements in the char residues. The char residues of EP/5.9APP/0.1 T-CHS and EP/5.5APP/0.5 T-CHS samples contain Co 3 O 4 , CoO, SnO, SnO 2 , oxides of phosphorus, and Sn element, which form a more compact physical barrier.

Weiwei Zhang,Weihong Wu,Weihua Meng,Weiya Xie,Yumeng Cui,Jianzhong Xu,Hongqiang Qu

Novel core-shell graphitic carbon nitride/zinc phytate (g-C3N4/PAZn) flame retardant was simple synthetized using two-dimensional g-C3N4and bio-based PAZn by self-assembly and incorporated into epoxy resin (EP) for improving the fire safety. The flame retardance and smoke suppression were investigated by cone calorimetry. The results indicated that g-C3N4/PAZn-EP displayed outstanding flame retardancy and smoke suppression, for example, the peak heat release rate and peak smoke production rate decreased by 71.38% and 25%, respectively. Furthermore, the flame retardancy mechanism was further explored by char residue and thermal stability analysis. It can be predicted that g-C3N4/PAZn will provide valuable reference about bio-based flame retardant.

Effect of Ni2+ chelated to the surface of PBFA on the charring flame retardant and smoke suppression properties of epoxy resin

Kailun Zhang,Hongjuan Wu,Ruifang Wu,Guang Yang,Tian Wang,Jixing Xie,Hongqiang Qu

Here, a phosphazene-based flame retardant (PBFA) containing active amine groups was synthesized by hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene and N-aminoethylpiperazine and nickel ion (Ni 2+ ) was chelated to the surface of PBFA (named as PBFA-Ni 2+ ). Incorporation into epoxy resin (EP) with a loading of 6 wt% (named as EP/PBFA-Ni 2+ -6.0), enabled the composite to pass the vertical burning test (UL-94) V 0 rating. Peak heat release rate and the total smoke release of EP/PBFA-Ni 2+ -6.0 were decreased by 41.02% and 22.74% as measured by cone calorimeter tests. The production rate of CO was inhibited when PBFA-Ni 2+ was incorporated into EP.

Smoke suppression and phosphorus-free condensed phase flame-retardant epoxy resin composites based on Salen-Ni

Yan Lv,Juguo Dai,Long Xia,Lili Luo,Yiting Xu,Lizong Dai

To avoid potential ecological and health problems caused by phosphorus-based flame retardants, a novel phosphorus-free PBA-Salen-Ni flame retardant is successfully synthesized in this work. In a nutshell, boron-containing metal complexes are prepared by nickel salts and chelating PBA-Salen molecule (PBA: p -phenylenediboronic acid). While the obtained material inherently has good compatibility and can endow polymers with good flame retardant properties at low addition levels. Besides, the char shielding layer and the “labyrinth effect” of the special porous char layer structure formed after the combustion of EP/PBA-Salen-Ni retard the transfer of volatile products, giving EP excellent smoke suppression properties. The results show that the limiting oxygen index value of the EP/PBA-Salen-Ni composites is increased from 25.6% (pure EP) to 30.5%, and it can pass the UL-94 V-0 rating when the addition amount is only 5wt%. Particularly, compared with pure EP, the total smoke production (19.9 m 2 ) and peak heat release rate (859.6 kW m −2 ) of EP/PBA-Salen-Ni composites are reduced by 36% and 33%, respectively. Therefore, this work provides a new idea for the rational design of phosphorus-free flame retardants that are mainly on condensed phase flame retardancy and have a good smoke suppression effect.

Ultrafine Fe(OH)3 nanoparticles formation via oxidation-mediated strategies towards remarkable flame-retardant and smoke-suppressant performances

Guangyan Chen,Zai-Yin Hu,Zhijun Guo,Yi Xie

Transition metal nanomaterials are widely applied as flame retardants in materials. Herein, an oxidation-mediated strategy was developed for temporally controlling the in situ growth of Fe(OH) 3 nanoparticles on wool/nylon (W/N) fabrics. The formed particles exhibit homogeneous dispersion on the surface of W/N fabrics, with an average particle diameter of about 60 nm. These Fe(OH) 3 nanoparticles can simultaneously enhance both the flame retardancy (the limiting oxygen index increased by 18.8 % and passed the UL-94 burning test of V-0 rating) and mechanical performance (the tensile strength increased by 9.13 %) of the W/N fabrics. Meanwhile, the obtained W/N fabrics exhibit remarkable smoke-suppressant properties, demonstrating a reduction of 76.4 % and 65.5 % in smoke production rate and total smoke production, respectively, compared to the pure W/N fabrics. Furthermore, the prepared W/N fabrics exhibit good durability. This innovative strategy may be also extended for synthesizing other nanomaterials and pave a new path to develop high-performance flame-retardant materials.

The synthesis and properties of an intumescent zinc-chelated organometallic flame retardant

Tianyu Liu,Ying Tao,Xiuyuan Ni

Organometallic flame retardants (OFRs) are currently attracting intensive attention. Here, we synthesized a new zinc-chelated OFR, ZnDSi, which was incorporated with phosphorus, silicon, and nitrogen functional moieties. The resulting ZnDSi exhibited strong intumescent properties upon heating and demonstrated high thermal stability, with a decomposition temperature (T d, 5 % ) of 349 °C, making it suitable for the melt-processing of most engineering plastics. Comparative experiments demonstrated that the chelated zinc converted the properties of the resultant OFR, including its intumescence, thermostability and hydrophobicity. The ZnDSi was tested in polyamide 66 (PA66) for the flame-retardant properties. Incorporating 10 wt% of ZnDSi into PA66 attained a limiting oxygen index of 29.1 %, accompanied by the reduction of the peak heat release rate by 35.0 % and total heat release by 28.2 % when compared to the pure PA66 sample, according to the cone calorimeter tests. Mechanism investigation was conducted to probe into the interactions between zinc and organic components through a custom apparatus for pyrolytic gas analysis, and it was found that zinc could reduce the soot release by suppressing the formation of the soot precursors during the pyrolysis. This work contributes to a deeper understanding of how metal elements function in OFR systems, which may conduce to developing OFRs with advanced performance.

Flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of flexible polyurethane foams containing an aluminum phosphate microcapsule

Hong Liu,Bin Zhang,Jian Han

A novel aluminum phosphate (ALP) microcapsule was synthesized with the aim of enhancing the flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties of flexible polyurethane (PU) foams. Meanwhile, the ALP microcapsule was analyzed by SEM, XRD, and EDX. The ALP microcapsule was added into PU foams to prepare flame retardant PU composites which show good flame retardancy, thermal stability, synergy effect and anti-dripping performance. Meanwhile, the LOI of the PU composites was about 28.5% and a V-0 rating in UL-94 was attained in the case of 15 wt% of the flame retardant compared to 21.0% and no rating for pure PU. An SDR of the PU composites of about 16.0% was attained in the case of 20 wt% of the flame retardant compared to 29.0% for pure PU. The gaseous phase mechanism of PU composites was investigated with thermogravimetry and Py-GC-MS. SEM, EDX and FTIR were employed to investigate the chemical structure and composition of the residual char of the flame retardant PU composites after TG tests. The results indicated that the ALP microcapsule could serve as an outstanding flame retardant that operates by both chemical (condensation) and physical (cooling and blocking) mechanisms. This suggests that the ALP microcapsule may provide a promising option for a new, cost-effective, eco-friendly, yet efficient flame retardant.

Chitosan-regulated inorganic oxyacid salt flame retardants: preparation and application in PVC composites

Song Qingyi,Wu Hongjuan,Liu Hao,Wang Tian,Meng Weihua,Qu Hongqiang

A series of chitosan-modified inorganic oxyacid salt flame retardants (IOS-CS) were synthesized and used as flame retardants to improve the fire resistance of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites while improving the mechanical properties of the materials. The thermal stability of the material was analyzed by TG test; the flame-retardant and smoke suppression properties were evaluated by limiting oxygen index (LOI) and cone calorimeter test, and the mechanical properties were analyzed by tensile test and impact test. The TG results showed that the addition of flame retardant can promote the early cross-linking decomposition of PVC composites, not only advance the decomposition temperature of the material but also promote the formation of char layer and increase the char residual content. LOI and cone calorimeter test results showed that stannate chitosan (Sn-CS) can improve flame retardant and smoke suppression more effectively than other samples. Compared with pure PVC, the addition of Sn-CS increased its LOI from 26.6 to 30.5% and reduced the total heat release value and total smoke release by 18.23% and 52.55%, respectively. At the same time, the addition of the flame retardants had no large deterioration effect on the mechanical properties of the material. The tensile properties of flame-retardant PVC were slightly reduced compared with pure PVC, and the impact resistance was even improved to some extent.

Synergistic effect of graphitic carbon nitride and ammonium polyphosphate on the enhanced flame retardant and smoke suppression properties of biobased polyamide 56

Yuhui Zhang,Yu Zhao,Zihao Wang,Xuegang Jiang,Xiucai Liu,Weihong Guo

Seeking a facile strategy to synthesize efficient and inexpensive flame retardant which endows biobased polyamide 56 (PA56) with desirable flame retardancy is an urgent need. Here, ammonium polyphosphate (APP) was modified with graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) to synthesize a nitrogen-phosphorus flame retardant (CN@APP) and then applied in biobased PA56. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra demonstrated that APP was successfully microencapsulated with g-C 3 N 4 . The micromorphology structure was further characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). PA56/CN@APP attained a UL 94 V-0 rating and limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 31.7%. A sharp reduction of 35.3% in peak heat release rate (pHRR) and 24.0% in total heat release (THR) and an 874% increase in char yield were noticed for PA56/CN@APP2 compared with pure PA56. Additionally, the peak smoke production rate (pSPR) and total smoke production (TSP) of PA56/CN@APP2 were 33.0% and 21.8% lower than those of pure PA56. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy were employed to analyze the condensed phase residues from the cone calorimeter test (CCT). The results indicated that CN@APP was beneficial for forming a more stable and compact carbon layer during combustion, thereby insulating the heat transfer and improving the flame retardancy and smoke suppression of PA56.
