As the most abundant renewable resource, cellulose fibers are potential candidates for use in health-protective clothing. Herein, we demonstrate a novel strategy for preparing cellulose fiber with prominent antibacterial and antiviral performance by the synergistic effect of amino groups and sulfonic acid groups. Specifically, guanylated chitosan oligosaccharide (GCOS) and N-sulfopropyl chitosan oligosaccharide (SCOS) were synthesized and chemically grafted onto cellulose fibers (CFs) to endow the fibers with antibacterial and antiviral properties . Moreover, a compounding strategy was applied to make the fibers with simultaneously high antibacterial and antiviral activity , especially in short contact time. The bacteriostatic rate (against S. aureus : 95.81 %, against E. coli : 92.07 %, 1 h) of the compounded fibers improved substantially when a few GCOS-CFs were mixed with SCOS-CFs; especially, it was much higher than both the individual GCOS-CFs and SCOS-CFs. By contrast, the improvement of the antiviral properties was less dramatic; however, even a few SCOS-CFs was mixed, the antiviral properties increased pronouncedly. Although the electrostatic interaction between SCOS and GCOS can make the SCOS-GCOS mixture lose some extent of antibacterial activity , the long chains of cellulose restrain the electrostatic interaction between sulfonic and amino groups, leading to their synergistic action and eventually superior antibacterial and antiviral effects.

The pH-responsive metal–organic framework (MOF) nanocarriers for sustainable controlled release of pesticides is promising in agricultural production owing to their long duration, high loading efficiency and antimicrobial activity. In this work, myclobutanil (MYC) was loaded into an Ag-based MOF (Ag-TCPP), and modified with a metal-phenolic network (MPN) via in-situ polymerization to construct a pH-responsive nano-delivery system (Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN). Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN presented a disordered nanoflower structure and many active sites with potential enhanced loading activity. The cumulative release rates of nanoparticles at pH 4.96, 7.5, and 8.5 were 52.6 %, 62.6 % and 80.0 %, respectively. Hence, Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN has slow release rate and pH responsiveness. The antifungal activity of Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN was significantly enhanced, and the bacteriostatic rate reached 81.8 %. This enhancement may be attributed to the synergistic antibacterial effect between tannic acid and Ag + . Safety experiments showed the nanoparticles had no inhibitory effect on the germination of Pakchoi seeds, and the pesticide residues of Ag-TCPP@MYC@MPN did not exceed the food safety standards. This work offers a new potential to develop improved responsive stimulus nanocarriers for sustainable controlled release of MYC.

Ideal bone implant materials need to provide multiple functions such as biocompatibility, non-cytotoxicity, and bone tissue regeneration guidance. To tackle this challenge, according to our previous work, carbon fiber (40 mm)-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFPEEK) composites were developed by using 3D needle-punched CFPEEK preform molding technology. Because of the excellent mechanical properties, the CFPEEK needled felt matrix composites have a broad application prospect in orthopedic internal fixation and implant materials. In order to expand the application range of composite materials, it is very necessary to improve the surface bioactivity of composite materials. The surface modification of CFPEEK with 2D titanium carbide (MXene) nanosheets (sulfonated CFPEEK (SCFPEEK)-polydopamine (PDA)-Ti3C2Tx) for enhanced photothermal antibacterial activity and osteogenicity was explored in this study. Here, the new composites we constructed are composed of Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, PDA, and biologically inert SCFPEEK, which gave the bio-inert composites bimodal therapeutic features: photothermal antibacterial activity and in vivo osseointegration. To our knowledge, this is the first time that a CFPEEK implant with a bioactive surface modified by Ti3C2Tx nanosheets was demonstrated. Due to the synergistic photothermal therapy (PTT) treatment of Ti3C2Tx/PDA, SCFPEEK-PDA-Ti3C2Tx (SCP-PDA-Ti) absorbed heat and the temperature increased to 40.8–59.6 °C─the high temperature led to bacterial apoptosis. The SCP-PDA-Ti materials could effectively kill bacteria after 10 min of near-infrared (NIR) irradiation at 808 nm. SCP-PDA-Ti (2.5) and SCP-PDA-Ti (3.0) achieved a 100% bacteriostasis rate. More importantly, the multifunctional implant SCP-PDA-Ti shows good cytocompatibility and an excellent ability to promote bone formation in terms of cytotoxicity, diffusion, alkaline phosphatase activity, alizarin red activity, real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis, and in vivo bone defect osteogenesis experiments. This provides a more extendable development idea for the application of carbon fiber-reinforced composites as orthopedic implants.
