Superhydrophobic surfaces show attractive anti-icing properties. However, it remains a challenge for them to achieve icephobicity and ultralow ice adhesion in a humid environment, which is fundamentally attributed to the icing behavior on their hierarchical textures. Here, we address the issue by integrating a superhydrophobic copper mesh with an intelligent organogel that can secrete antifreezing agent autonomously in response to temperature. The antifreezing agent is composed of ethylene glycol and water. By autonomously secreting the antifreezing agent at subzero temperatures, the hybrid surface effectively inhibits the frosting process on the hierarchical texture of the superhydrophobic mesh. Consequently, the surface not only exhibits excellent antifrosting properties in a humid atmosphere but also repeatedly removes the ice deposited spontaneously due to ultralow ice adhesion (8 Pa). This integration of intelligent organogel paves a new and promising avenue to design superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent icephobic properties.

The classical lyotropic liquid crystals (LLCs) prepared in pure water are not adapted to subzero temperatures. However, the fabrication of cryogenic LLCs is highly significant for gaining profound insights into self-assembly at extremely low temperatures. A proficient solution strategy, namely introducing alcohol antifreeze to water, faces a challenge in balancing frozen resistance and efficient self-assembly. Herein, we address this unmet challenge by selecting four alcohols with comparable structure to fabricate cryogenic LLCs system through the supramolecular self-assembly of a long-chain non-ionic surfactant. The freezing point, surfactant solubility, and self-assembly behavior at subzero temperatures were investigated. The alcohol antifreeze plays a significant role in depressing water freezing point and governing assembled microstructures. Both experimental and computational results revealed that alcohols bearing more hydroxyl groups are efficient to lower water freezing point while remain the capability to induce surfactant self-assembly. They can realize solvophobic balance and strong hydrogen-bond interactions. A simple approach based on Gordon parameter was established to evaluate the suitability as an anti-freezing medium for amphiphile self-assembly. Strikingly, a new LLCs system capable of withstanding the extremely low temperature of −80 °C was developed, which shows interestingly continuous phase transitions as temperature lowers to subzero. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into cryogenic supramolecular self-assembly, and offers a significant foundation and evaluation method for the selection of appropriate alcohol antifreeze for cryogenic self-assembly.

Natural antifreeze proteins are known for their excellent control of ice formation and growth, while synthetic molecules seldom have the similar effects. Here we report a series of protein mimetic peptoids with different side chains exhibiting significant ice recrystallization inhibition activity, and their structure–property relationships are also studied. The presence of peptoid can clearly slow down ice growth and decrease ice crystal grain size, but shows no thermal hysteresis, which make peptoids great antifreeze agent candidates in cryopreservation. Peptoids with methyl, ethyl and amino groups on side chains can modulate ice crystal shape, while peptoids bearing hydroxyl and ethyl groups decrease ice growth rate the most. All peptoids can reduce ice crystal grain size and the one with hydroxyl groups give the smallest grain size. This study reveals peptoid structure effects on ice growth and points to the design rules for biomimetic antifreeze agents.

Traditional hydrogel-based wearable sensors with flexibility, biocompatibility, and mechanical compliance exhibit potential applications in flexible wearable electronics. However, the low sensitivity and poor environmental resistance of traditional hydrogels severely limit their practical application. Herein, high-ion-conducting poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite hydrogels were fabricated and applied for harsh environments. MXene ion-conducting microchannels and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) ion sources contributed to the directional transport of abundant free ions in the hydrogel, which significantly improved the sensitivity and mechanical–electric conversion of the nanocomposite hydrogel-based piezoelectric and triboelectric sensors. More importantly, the glycerol as an antifreezing agent enabled the hydrogel-based sensors to function in harsh environments. Therefore, the nanocomposite hydrogel exhibited high gauge factor (GF) at −20 °C (GF = 3.37) and 60 °C (GF = 3.62), enabling the hydrogel-based sensor to distinguish different writing letters and sounding words. Meanwhile, the hydrogel-based piezoelectric and triboelectric generators showed excellent mechanical–electric conversion performance regardless of low- (−20 °C) or high- (60 °C) temperature environments, which can be applied as a visual feedback system for information transmission without external power sources. This work provides self-powered nanocomposite hydrogel-based sensors that exhibit potential applications in flexible wearable electronics under harsh environmental conditions.

The development of nontoxic and efficient antifreeze agents for organ cryopreservation is crucial. However, the research remains highly challenging. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of peptoid oligomers using the solid-phase submonomer synthesis method by mimicking the amphiphilic structures of antifreeze proteins (AFPs). The obtained peptoid oligomers showed excellent antifreeze properties, reducing the ice crystal growth rate and inhibiting ice recrystallization. The effects of the hydrophobicity and sequence of the peptoid side chains were also studied to reveal the structure–property relationship. The prepared peptoid oligomers were detected as non-cytotoxic and considered to be useful in the biological field. We hope that the peptoid oligomers presented in this study can provide effective strategies for the design of biological cryoprotectants for organ preservation in the future.
