ABSTRACT Indicating hydrogels have shown the advantages of being fast, sensitive, and real-time in demonstrating the freshness of aquatic products due to their noticeable color change. In this work, an anti-freezing hydrogel embedded with pH-sensitive alizarin was developed as an original colorimetric indicator for monitoring the corruption of aquatic products at low temperatures. The anti-freezing hydrogel was prepared from 2-carboxyethyl acrylate, [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]-trimethylammonium chloride, and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate monomers with triethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-linking agent. The hydrogel showed excellent anti-freezing capability, which was further incorporated with the pH-sensitive dye alizarin to gain the indicating capability. When applied in the indication of the freshness of salmon under low-temperature storage, it was found that the color changes of the indicator corresponded with the total volatile basic nitrogen contents of salmon, the correlation coefficient of which was 0.959 6. These results indicated the application potential of the hydrogels as freshness indicators during low-temperature storage or cold-chain transportation.

Hydrogels are widely used across various fields, creating a demand for materials capable of withstanding freezing conditions. Most existing antifreezing hydrogels rely on small-molecule additives or are organogels, which frequently encounter environmental concerns due to potential toxicity and exhibit poor long-term stability in harsh conditions. In this study, we propose a hybridized hydrogen bonding strategy to develop antifreezing hydrogels without the need for small-molecule additives. The freezing resistance is achieved through interactions between the hydrogel’s polar functional groups (the −COOH group of poly(acrylic acid), the −CO– group of polyvinylpyrrolidone, and the −OH group of phytic acid) and water molecules, which modify the distribution of hydrogen bonds within the system. These hydrogels demonstrate excellent mechanical resilience (92%) and conductivity, both of which are maintained at subzero temperatures. Additionally, flexible sensors made from these hydrogels exhibit reliable signal stability in low-temperature environments. This work presents an effective strategy for improving the freezing resistance of hydrogels, advancing our understanding of antifreezing mechanisms, and providing practical insights for future applications, particularly in wearable sensor technologies.

Conductive hydrogels have emerged as ideal candidate materials for strain sensors due to their signal transduction capability and tissue-like flexibility, resembling human tissues. However, due to the presence of water molecules, hydrogels can experience dehydration and low-temperature freezing, which greatly limits the application scope as sensors. In this study, an ionic co-hybrid hydrogel called PBLL is proposed, which utilizes the amphoteric ion betaine hydrochloride (BH) in conjunction with hydrated lithium chloride (LiCl) thereby achieving the function of humidity adaptive. PBLL hydrogel retains water at low humidity (<50%) and absorbs water from air at high humidity (>50%) over the 17 days of testing. Remarkably, the PBLL hydrogel also exhibits strong anti-freezing properties (−80 °C), high conductivity (8.18 S m −1 at room temperature, 1.9 S m −1 at −80 °C), high gauge factor (GF approaching 5.1). Additionally, PBLL hydrogels exhibit strong inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), as well as biocompatibility. By synergistically integrating PBLL hydrogel with wireless transmission and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, this study has accomplished real-time human-computer interaction systems for sports training and rehabilitation evaluation. PBLL hydrogel exhibits significant potential in the fields of medical rehabilitation, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Hydrogels are considered to be one of the most promising flexible sensing materials for a variety of practical applications. However, hydrogels usually freeze at temperatures below freezing and lose their inherent properties. Thus, it is highly desirable to prepare hydrogels that can simultaneously have excellent mechanical properties and antifreezing properties at low temperatures. Herein, a facile photoinitiated polymerization strategy is employed to introduce zwitterionic proline (ZP) into the flexible poly(2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) matrix to prepare a stretchable and adhesive PHEA/ZP hydrogel with good freezing-tolerant properties. Due to the presence of abundant hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interaction forces, the obtained PHEA/ZP hydrogel exhibits excellent mechanical properties (stretch of 810%), a self-adhesive nature, high transparency (>90%), and rapid electrical self-healing capability. More importantly, the presence of ZP endows the hydrogel with considerable antifreeze properties, making it completely transparent and stretchable even at −40 °C. In addition, the use of PHEA/ZP hydrogel as a flexible strain sensor can accurately monitor human motions, such as the flexion of human limbs and joint microstress. Therefore, antifreeze hydrogel assisted by zwitterions enables wearable flexible sensors for motion detection at room temperature and low temperature, which has great potential in the field of flexible sensors.

Antifreezing and highly proton-conductive hydrogels show promising applications in flexible electrochemical devices owing to their inherent stretchability and safety. In this study, we chose an ethylene glycol/water (EG/H2O) binary mixture as the solvent, sulfonated chitosan (CS-SO3H) as the proton-conducting component, and the blend of CS-SO3H and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a gelator to prepare double-network hydrogels, CS-SO3H@PVA-X (X represents the mass ratio of CS-SO3H and PVA with a value of 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5), which are characterized by different techniques, including microanalysis, IR, 1H and 13C NMR spectra, TG, PXRD, and so on. CS-SO3H@PVA-X hydrogels exhibit excellent tensile strength, toughness, and a freezing-tolerant feature. Importantly, CS-SO3H@PVA-1.5 hydrogel displays not only high proton conduction in a wide range of temperatures from −35 to 70 °C, with proton conductivities of 7.2 × 10–4 S cm–1 at −35 °C and 4.56 × 10–2 S cm–1 at 70 °C and ambient humidity, but also exceptional mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 3.11 MPa and an elongation at break of 423%, indicative of a potential application in electrochemical devices relying on proton transport and operating at extreme conditions. It is also discovered for the first time that the double-network micelles are entangled together to form the spiral crimped texture in hydrogels CS-SO3H@PVA-X (X = 1.0 and 1.5).

The operating temperature of hydrogels, especially at low temperatures, is crucial due to their wide applicability in soft robots, sensors, and electronic skin. Hydrogels are often used at room temperature, but their performance may deteriorate at low temperatures. Therefore, it is crucial to develop hydrogels that can be used at low temperatures to expand their range of use. Herein, we have proposed a simple one-pot method to prepare a frost-resistant (−70 °C) and conductive hydrogel consisting of a glycerol (Gly)-water binary solvent. We have added tannic acid (TA)-coated carboxymethylated cellulose nanofibrils (CMCNFs) to poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as a functional filler to improve the hydrogel's mechanical properties. The introduction of sulfonated carbon nanotubes (SCNT) has provided the hydrogel with high conductivity (0.1 S/m), strain sensitivity (gauge factor of 3.76), and cyclic stability (1600 cycles). Due to the strong hydrogen bonding and physical entanglement effects between the components, the hydrogel exhibied excellent tensile properties (297 %), high toughness (0.44 MJ/m 3 ), and a high Young's modulus (1.25 MPa). These characteristics ensure that the hydrogel is well suited for low-temperature environments, health monitoring, and wearable devices.

Carboxymethyl chitosan (CA)/polyacrylamide (PAM) tough anti-freezing conductive (GCPC) hydrogels were fabricated via a simple one-pot method. The key innovation lies in strategic construction of interpenetrating network, reinforced by a synergistic interplay of hydrogen bonding, ionic coordination, and electrostatic interactions. Crucially, the CaCl 2 solution served a triple role: it dynamically cross-linked molecular chains to enhance mechanical toughness, acting as anti-freezing agent to suppress ice crystallization, enabling remarkable freezing resistance at ultra-low temperatures down to −50 °C, while simultaneously provides high conductivity for hydrogels as ionic electrolyte. These unique combinations endowed the GCPCs with remarkable strength (highest tensile strength of 1.24 MPa and highest compressive strength of 6.45 MPa), low hysteresis performance (6.02 % in tensile cycles and 22.09 % in compression cycles), excellent mechanical stability and durability (could withstand 1000 stretching and compression cycles without damage or relaxation) and high electrical conductivity (up to 7.20 S m −1 ). The GCPC could be assembled into a strain sensor and a temperature sensor, both of which delivered rapid, stable responses across extreme environments, highlighting their potential for multi-functional low-temperature wearable electronics and durable soft robotics. The present work is expected to provide a simple and efficient route for the preparation of multifunctional anti-freezing, tough and conductive hydrogels based on CA, and holds promise for a wide range of applications in soft sensor devices, suggesting new possibilities for technological progress within this domain.

Conventional hydrogels are prone to freezing in severe cold climates, limiting the application of hydrogel-based flexible sensors. This study proposes a strategic design that successfully prepares humic acid-based anti-freezing hydrogels via a one-pot method, which is named P-HPCB hydrogels. It combines modified cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs@BSA), natural organic humic acid (HA), the biomass component L-proline (L-P) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) through freeze–thaw cycles. By the way, CNCs@BSA was obtained by grafting bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The –OH groups in HA and L-P bind with free H 2 O molecules, reducing the freezing point of the hydrogels to −35.7 °C, effectively solving the problem of low-temperature freezing. Meanwhile, the addition of CNCs@BSA enhances the maximum tensile stress of the P-HPCB hydrogels to 3.6 MPa and achieves a self-healing efficiency of 86.1%. The flexible sensors constructed with P-HPCB hydrogels can accurately detect and respond to human motion signals even at an extreme low temperature of −30.0 °C, demonstrating excellent sensitivity and stability. This provides insights for the application of hydrogel flexible sensors under severe cold conditions.

The development of the flexible sensors has attracted a lot of researchers’ interests. Conductive hydrogel has been regarded as an ideal candidate in flexible sensors due to its stretchability and superior flexibility, which minimized the possibility of damage during operation. However, due to the fact that the main component of hydrogels is water, they tend to freeze under low-temperature conditions, which limits their range of applications. In this work, an anti-freezing gelatin/PAM/LiCl hydrogel with excellent conductivity was fabricated, after optimization, the hydrogel possessed a conductivity of 1.01 S·m −1 , and excellent mechanical properties (tensile stress of 0.15 MPa, tensile strain of 618.03 %). With the excellent properties, hydrogel-based strain sensor and pressure sensors were fabricated, showing its huge potential to be applied in flexible devices. In addition, hydrogel-based triboelectric nanogenerator was also prepared with excellent output characteristics and long-term stability. Triboelectric nanogenerator was used to capture signals generated by different motions. Combined with deep learning algorithm, a high accuracy of 97.62 % was achieved for motion classification task. This work developed a new strategy for building flexible electronics operating at low temperature.

Graphical In this work, an intrinsiclly antifreezing hydrogel based on amphiphilic copolymer was designed, whose freezing point can be as low as −30 °C without adding any organic solvents and salts. By soaking the hydrogel in Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 solution to serve as the electrolyte of flexible zinc ion hybrid capacitor, the device achieved excellent electrochemical performance at −50 °C. Flexible zinc ion hybrid capacitors (ZIHCs) have attracted extensive research interest by virtue of their high safety and low cost. However, their low-temperature application remains limited due to the freeze of hydrogel electrolytes. Herein, we prepared an intrinsiclly antifreezing amphiphilic copolymer hydrogel based on hydrophilic monomer 2-Hydroxyethyl acrylate and hydrophobic monomer 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H perfluorooctyl methacrylate. Thanks to the hydrogen bond destruction effect of the hydrophilic units and the nano-confinement effect of the hydrophobic units, the hydrogel exhibited a freezing point as low as −30 °C, which was significantly lower than that of hydrogel prepared using pure hydrophilic monomers. In addition, the hydrogel also showed excellent adhesion performance, which contributed to the assembly of device and prevented layer-to-layer slippage during the device use. By soaking the hydrogel in Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 solution to serve as the electrolyte of the ZIHC, the device achieved excellent electrochemical performance at −50 °C. This work provides a new path for the design of antifreeze hydrogel electrolytes for ZIHCs.

Stretchable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have been made available for a large amplitude of human body movement as an effective wearable power source. However, the elasticity and performance of such a kind of device seriously decline in a harsh environment, especially below sub-zero temperature. In this work, an anti-freezing hydrogel was synthesized by one-step radical polymerization of acrylamide monomer in hydroxyethyl cellulose aqueous solution. After adding LiCl into the hydrogel, it can be cooled to temperatures as low as −69 °C without freezing. The hydroxyethyl cellulose not only enhances the mechanical properties as a physical crosslinking agent but also provides water retention properties. With a constant elongation of ∼150%, the anti-freezing hydrogel based TENG (AH-TENG) has been successfully demonstrated to harvest human biomechanical energy to drive wearable electronic devices, even in a harsh ice and snow environment. At a fixed frequency of 2.5 Hz, an AH-TENG with a 3 × 3 cm2 area achieved an output of 285 V, 15.5 μA, 90 nC and an instantaneous peak power density of 626 mW m−2, respectively. This work is anticipated to provide a promising approach for the advancement of flexible energy sources under harsh conditions.

Hydrogel electrolytes with antifreezing performance and excellent mechanical properties have become a research hotspot, but the general preparation process requires time and energy consumption, limiting the scope of applications. In this work, a simple, universal, and fast gelation based on a sodium lignin sulfonate macromolecule–zinc ion (LS-Zn2+) self-catalytic system is developed. The catechol group of LS can coordinate with Zn2+ to form complexes and accelerate the establishment of reversible oxidation–reduction, which can promote the rapid polymerization of vinyl monomers by generating various free radicals (OH• and 1O2). The gelation process does not require any additional energy and can be completed within 5 min by controlling the mass fraction of LS and the concentration of Zn2+ or acids. The mechanical strength of the preferred hydrogel electrolyte can reach a tensile stress of 0.14 MPa under 1750% strain. The hydrogel electrolyte possesses an excellent conductivity of 3.67 mS cm–1 at extreme temperatures as low as −40 °C. The hydrogel electrolyte sensor can detect various parts of the human body in a wide temperature range with stable output resistance signals. This work provides a LS-Zn2+ self-catalytic method for the rapid preparation of multifunctional hydrogels.
