Considering that the resource utilization of cooling tower blowdown water has not yet involved antiscalant recovery, this study conducted batch experiments to investigate the mechanism and effectiveness of electrodialysis for synchronous desalination and retention of antiscalant Amino Trimethylene Phosphonic Acid (ATMP). The results indicated that the migration flux of ATMP was much lower than that of inorganic salts, which could be attributed to the huge concentration and mobility differences between inorganic salts and ATMP, according to the extended Nernst-Planck equation, resulting in the preferential transmembrane electromigration of inorganic salts during the electrodialysis process. Thus, most of the ATMP was retained in the desalinated water (as make-up water) and reused in the circulating cooling water system. Under a reasonable working voltage of 60 V, using electrodialysis to treat simulated cooling tower blowdown water could retain 60.5 % of ATMP while achieving a 73.2 % desalination ratio, with an energy consumption of only 0.69 kWh·m −3 . These values were extended to investigate the cost-effectiveness of using electrodialysis to treat cooling tower blowdown water with a 75 m 3 h −1 flow. Compared to the widely used reverse osmosis process, the electrodialysis process could reduce investment and annual operating costs by 12.6 % and 10.8 %, respectively, while also improving resource utilization benefits by 18.5 %. Thus, this method demonstrated excellent applicability.

Contaminants in mine wastewater treatment processes can significantly impact the performance of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Antiscalants are commonly applied to the RO process to mitigate the deterioration of membrane permeation efficiency caused by fouling. Therefore, it is essential to gain an understanding of the role played by anti-scaling agents in RO operations. This work investigates the effects of three commonly used phosphonate antiscalants, namely ATMP (aminotris (methylenephosphonic acid)), HEDP (1-hydroxyethylidene-1, 1-bis (phosphonic acid)), and PBTC (2-phosphonobutane-1, 2, 4-tricarboxylic acid), on the permeation and desalination performances of RO membranes. The results showed that the presence of phosphonate antiscalants effectively inhibits interactions between components and between components and RO membranes, thereby enhancing membrane flux levels. However, the inhibitors may interact with the membrane surface and alter its properties, significantly affecting membrane performance. Excessive addition of antiscalants increases membrane contamination and deviates membrane flux from optimal levels. Furthermore, adding phosphonate inhibitors significantly affects the membrane retention efficiency of inorganic salt components and the extent to which the membrane retains organic wastewater components. This work provides insight into the role of phosphonate antiscalants in treating wastewater with soluble silica. It may offer a theoretical foundation for standardizing the use of antiscalants in industrial wastewater.

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) of high-salinity brine has attracted increasing attention recently. Interfacial solar crystallizers , which employ solar-driven water evaporation for salts crystallization from the near-saturation brine to achieve ZLD, are promising in ZLD due to low energy consumption and cost. However, many interfacial solar crystallizers were only used to treat high-salinity NaCl solution in the past while probably failing when treating high-salinity concentrated seawater. Here we explored the failure mechanism of the solar crystallizers in the high-salinity concentrated seawater and proposed a novel strategy to stably treat high-salinity concentrated seawater by combining a solar crystallizer with antiscalant (Nitrilotriacetic acid, NTA), taking Janus 3D solar crystallizer (Janus-3DSC) as an example. Janus-3DSC exhibited a stable average evaporation rate of 2.29 ± 0.36 kg m −2 h −1 under 1.5 sun in the 20.0 wt% concentrated simulated seawater containing NTA. The large-size Janus-3DSC could treat 20.0 wt% concentrated natural seawater containing NTA outdoors with a salt recovery rate of 11.27 kg m −2 day −1 and an evaporation rate of 18.63 kg m −2 day −1 . We believe that this work would provide a novel and effective way to achieve effective and eco-friendly ZLD of high-salinity concentrated seawater, even other high-salinity brine.

Mineral scale deposit is one of the major problems incessantly faced in the oil and gas producing wells and surface facilities, and if not well-handled can cause an unsuccessful petroleum production. To eradicate scale deposits, scale inhibitors (SIs) are commonly deployed into industrial water systems. Because of effectiveness and long squeeze lifetimes, organic phosphonate SIs are extensively used for preventing mineral scale formation in industrial water systems. However, they usually exhibit lower Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ tolerances that restrict their applications in harsh conditions where high inhibitory dosages are needed. In this paper, a multifunctional aminoalkylenephosphonate-based antiscalant having higher Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ tolerances is studied. The antiscalant was synthesized, characterized (FTIR and NMR spectroscopies), and evaluated in accordance with the NACE Standard Method (TM0374) for preventing CaSO 4 and CaCO 3 formation in the petroleum industry. The effects of inhibitory dosages, water hardness, temperature, incubation period, and pH were studied. We further tested the performance of the antiscalant in simulated field waters. Experimental results show that the multifunctional aminoalkylenephosphonate-based antiscalant has better inhibitory properties as compared to conventional aminoalkylenephosphonate-based SIs. The incorporation of the sulfonate group into the molecule significantly improved the solubility of the antiscalant and hence its tolerances to Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ions. Also, it bolstered thermal stability of the inhibitor. The results from simulated field conditions are promising. The synthesized antiscalant performed superbly than the conventionally aminomethylenephosphonate antiscalants where Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ concentrations are challenging.
