Although conductive hydrogel-based flexible electronic devices have superb flexibility and high conductivities, they tend to malfunction in dry or frigid areas. Herein, an ultralow-temperature tolerant, antidrying, and conductive composite hydrogel is designed for electronic skin applications on the basis of the synergy of double-cross-linked polymer networks, Hofmeister effect, and electrostatic interaction and fabricated by in situ free radical polymerization of 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid and acrylic acid in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol) and conductive MXene sheets, followed by impregnation with LiCl. Thanks to the synergy of LiCl and the charged polar terminal groups of the synthesized polymers, the composite hydrogel can not only bear an ultralow temperature of −80 °C without freezing but also maintain its original mass. Meanwhile, the resultant hydrogel possesses satisfactory self-regeneration ability benefiting from the moisturizing effect of LiCl. The conductive network of MXene sheets greatly improves the ionic conductivity of the hydrogel at low temperatures, exhibiting an ionic conductivity of 1.4 S m–1 at −80 °C. Furthermore, the electronic skin assembled by the multifunctional hydrogel is efficient in monitoring human motions at −80 °C. The antifreezing and antidrying features along with favorable ionic conductivity, high tensile strength, and outstanding flexibility make the composite hydrogel promising for applications in frigid and dry regions.

Conductive hydrogels with water-enriched pores have shown great potential in electromagnetic wave protection and flexible wearable electronics. However, hydrogel with high water content often results in some challenges such as water loss and low-temperature freezing. In this study, porous gelatin/ChCl/MXene Ti 3 C 2 T x (GCM) hydrogels were prepared via a facile one-pot method. The introduction of ChCl forms abundant hydrogen bonds in GCM hydrogels, which endows the hydrogels long-term anti-drying (30 days) and anti-freezing abilities (−30 °C). Due to the synergistic effects of the porous structure, highly conductive MXene and water molecules, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness (SE) reach up to 108 dB in the X-band. Significantly, the effect of water molecules on EMI SE is quantified by adjusting the water content in hydrogel. Moreover, the gelatin-based hydrogel exhibits super-elasticity (0.25 MPa at 80 % strain) and demonstrates no significant decrease in EMI SE after 500 compression cycles. Finally, the excellent pressure-sensing properties of GCM hydrogel enable sensitive and reliable detection in human motion and smart coding. Therefore, the developed GCM hydrogel demonstrates promising application prospects in the fields of EMI shielding and sensing for wearable electronic devices.

Sensors based on conductive hydrogels have received extensive attention in various fields, such as artificial intelligence, electronic skin, and health monitoring. However, the poor resilience and fatigue resistance, icing, and water loss of traditional hydrogels greatly limit their application. Herein, an ionic conductive organohydrogel (PAC-Zn) was prepared for the first time by copolymerization of cardanol and acrylic acid in water/1,3-butanediol as a binary solvent system. A very small amount of cardanol (1% cardanol of total monomers) could not only significantly improve the tensile strength (∼4 times) and toughness (∼3 times) of PAA but also improve its extensibility. Due to the presence of 1,3-butanediol, PAC-Zn showed outstanding tolerance for freezing (−45 °C) and drying (over 85% moisture retention after 15 days of storage in a 37 °C oven). Compared with ethylene glycol and glycerol as antifreeze agents used in organohydrogels, the addition of 1,3-butanediol endowed the organohydrogel with not only similar frost resistance but also better mechanical performance. Besides, PAC-Zn exhibited fast resilience (almost no hysteresis loop) and excellent antifatigue ability. More importantly, a PAC-Zn organohydrogel-based sensor could detect human motion in real time (wrist, elbow, finger, and knee joints), revealing its fast response, good sensitivity, and stable electromechanical repeatability. In conclusion, the multifunctional PAC-Zn organohydrogel is expected to become a potential and promising candidate in the field of strain sensors under a broad range of environmental temperatures.

Traditional hydrogels are easily frozen or evaporated under colder or hotter temperatures, resulting in their performance degradation. In this paper, polyacrylic acid, sodium alginate, carbon nanotubes, water, and glycerol are used to synthesize self-healing, wearable, freezing resistance, and dry resistance conductive hydrogels with interpenetrating crosslinking network structure. The dynamic cross-linking network structure of the hydrogel can rapidly recover and restructure after damage. In addition, the conductive hydrogels exhibit excellent adhesion to various materials (including PTFE, iron, glass, plastic, and skin). Conductive hydrogel has excellent strain-electric sensing properties, and has high sensitivity, significant stability and repeatability. The conductive hydrogel can be used to test the movement of fingers and knee joints by strain sensing, and has excellent, sensitive, and stable resistance response. Therefore, the conductive hydrogel can be used as a wearable strain sensor for real-time detection of human joint movement. The hydrogel has better environmental adaptability and broad application prospects.

Abstract Conductive hydrogel (CH) strain sensors have made significant progress in wearable electronic products in recent years. However, the use of aqueous solvents as the dispersion medium in CHs largely limits the scope of applications of CHs and impedes the combination of the mechanical properties and ionic conductivity, which is urgently desired to be addressed. Herein, a simple one-pot preparation of anti-freezing, anti-drying ionic CHs with high stretchability (up to 869%), toughness (6.60 MJ/m 3 ), and Young's modulus (0.56 MPa) was proposed. These CHs consist of polyvinyl alcohol, tannic acid, and sodium chloride dispersed in a solvent consisting of glycerol and cellulose nanofiber suspension. The thus-synthesized CHs exhibit good ionic conductivity (~ 0.86 S/m) and strain sensitivity (gauge factor of 8.54). The organohydrogel possesses a sensitive strain sensing capability and a wide-working temperature range (−50 °C to 60 °C), and good stability (30 d in room-temperature) to detect human movement, such as large (joint movement) and subtle movements (voice in the throat). These advantages allow organohydrogel sensors to show great potential for electronic skin, personal healthcare, and flexible wearable devices. Graphical abstract

Due to their intrinsic flexibility, tunable conductivity, multiple stimulus-response, and self-healing ability, ionic conductive hydrogels have drawn significant attention in flexible/wearable electronics. However, challenges remain because traditional hydrogels inevitably faced the problems of losing flexibility and conductivity because of the inner water loss when exposed to the ambient environment. Besides, the water inside the hydrogel will freeze at the water icing temperatures, making the device hard and fragile. As a promising alternative, organogels have attracted wide attention because they can, to some extent, overcome the above drawbacks. Herein, a kind of organogel ionic conductor (MOIC) by a self-polymerization reaction is involved, which is super stretchable, anti-drying, and anti-freezing. Meanwhile, it can still maintain high mechanical stability after alternately loading/unloading at the strain of 600% for 600 s (1800 cycles). Using this MOIC, high-performance triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is constructed (MOIC-TENG) to harvest small mechanical energy even the MOIC electrode underwent an extremely low temperature. In addition, multifunctional flexible/wearable sensors (strain sensor, piezoresistive sensor, and tactile sensor) are realized to monitor human motions in real time, and recognize different materials by triboelectric effect. This study demonstrates a promising candidate material for flexible/wearable electronics such as electronic skin, flexible sensors, and human-machine interfaces.

As a low-grade sustainable heat source, the breath waste heat exhaled by human bodies is always ignored, although producing a greater temperature than ambient. Converting this heat into electric energy for use as power sources or detecting signals is extremely important in cutting-edge wearable medicine. This heat-to-electricity conversion is possible with thermogalvanic hydrogels. However, challenges remain in their antifreezing and antidrying properties, significantly restricting the durability of thermogalvanic gels in practical applications. Herein, a dual-network poly(vinyl alcohol)/gelatin (PVA/GEL) gel thermogalvanic device with Fe(CN)63–/4– as a redox pair is developed, with an outstanding low-temperature durability and antidrying capacity. These features result from the use of a binary H2O/GL (glycerin) solvent to limit hydrogen bonding between water molecules. The prepared thermogalvanic gel patch is capable of easily converting physiological data into understandable electrical impulses using the temperature difference between the ambient environment and the heat produced by human breathing, realizing a simple self-powered respiratory monitoring strategy for the first time. Even below zero temperature, the gel patch-based mask can operate normally, implying it fits into low-temperature environments. This study sheds fresh light on the development of active wearable medical electronics that are powered by demic low-level heat.

Conductive hydrogels, a type of intrinsically flexible and conductive materials, are frequently employed in soft electronics. However, because water-based hydrogels can easily freeze and dry, their long-term stability is considerably limited. Herein, a glycerol (Gly)–water binary antifreezing and antidrying hydrogel was prepared by using glycine with water as a solvent, followed by the introduction of cationic polysaccharide chitosan quaternary ammonium salts into the covalently cross-linked polyacrylamide network and addition of NaCl ions to adjust the ionic conductivity of the hydrogel. In a broad temperature range, the produced hydrogel was used for tensile and sensitive strain sensing. Because strong hydrogen bonds between Gly and water molecules are easily established, the resultant organohydrogels have good freezing and drying endurance, retaining long-term deformation even at negative temperatures. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibits good adhesion and tensile properties because of the addition of chitosan quaternary ammonium salts. At the same time, strain sensors fabricated using the hydrogel exhibit a wide operating strain range (≈1000%) and good sensitivity, stability, and repeatability, making them promising candidates for building gel-based strain sensor platforms.

Conductive hydrogels (CHs) have demonstrated great potential application in wearable devices as a substitute for traditional rigid metal electrode sensors. However, the design of CHs with excellent mechanical stability for extreme environmental conditions remains a great challenge due to the high water content present in hydrogels. Herein, a novel anti-freezing and anti-drying zwitterionic poly (ionic liquid) organohydrogel was prepared via free-radical polymerization of acrylic acid (AA), 1-propyl-3-vinyl imidazole sulfonate (ZILs), cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) and ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) in a glycerol/water mixture solvent. The synergistic interaction in the hybrid crosslinking, composed of physical/chemical crosslinking, endowed organohydrogel with desired mechanical properties, including stretchability (1032 %), self-recoverability (∼88 % recovery efficiency after 60 min), and excellent durability (500 cycles with 30 % deformation). Moreover, the organohydrogel exhibited satisfied conductivity (2.99 mS/cm), high strain-sensitive behavior (gauge factor (GF) up to 4.86), and significant sensing stability in a wide temperature range (−20–50 °C) due to the introduction of the binary solvent, the zwitterionic unit of ZILs, and Fe 3+ . Combined with the above advantages, a simple strain sensor was assembled, which offered remarkable real-time sensitivity in detecting human motions. This work provided new insights into the design of flexible sensors for applications in extreme environments.

The emerging hydrogels for fruit preservation have aroused widespread scientific interest. However, it is challenging for current hydrogel packaging to incorporate the required multifunctional properties. Herein, a gelatin-based (Gel/G) hydrogel film is elaborately designed as an efficient mango packaging and preservation system. Multiple dynamic non-covalent interactions serve as sacrificial bonds to dissipate energy and endow the hydrogel with remarkable elongation (up to 1204 %) and tensile strength (216.08 kPa). The optimized Gel/G hydrogel also provides excellent transparency, UV blocking, degradability, water vapor barrier, biosafety and anti-drying performance. Notably, compared with the blank control and commercial PE film, the Gel/G hydrogel-packed mangoes maintain the color and smoothness of epidermis, and delay the browning and softening processes of fruits. Additionally, the pH value, TSS, and MDA contents of Gel/G hydrogel-packed mangoes remain at a lower level and vary stably, and TA consumption is less. These results suggest that the Gel/G hydrogel packaging has a remarkable effect on mango preservation and can effectively delay its ripening and senescence process. Therefore, our work contributes to the in-depth understanding and rational design of food packaging and multifunctional hydrogel preservation films.

Hydrogel has great application prospect in the field of flexible wearable devices; however, its poor antifreezing and antidrying properties hinder its applications in wearable devices. Herein, a self-adhesive glycerol-hydrogel (G-hydrogel) with antifreezing and antidrying properties was prepared successfully. The glycerol and water double-solvent system endowed excellent antifreezing and antidrying properties with hydrogel, which ensured the flexibility of the G-hydrogel even after being frozen for 24 h at −15 °C or stored at room temperature for a long time. Polydopamine (PDA)-intercalated bentonite (BT) incorporated into the G-hydrogel contributed good comprehensive mechanical property to the G-hydrogel. The peeling test results confirmed that G-hydrogel has good adhesion to natural and synthetic materials because of the existence of PDA with catechol structure. Particularly, the G-hydrogel presented marvelous sensing capabilities for strain and pressure and could monitor the movements of a human. In summary, this kind of self-adhesive, antidrying, and antifreezing hybrid G-hydrogel may be a very promising soft material for flexible wearable devices.

Herein, a novel double network polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin/glycerol (PVA/GEL/GL) organohydrogel is reported and fabricated. The existence of GEL improves the high mechanical strength based on the strong hydrogen bonds from PVA and GL, endowing the organohydrogels with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. Especially, PVA/GEL/GL organohydrogels can maintain excellent mechanical flexibility at −25 °C, and possess remarkable non-drying even at 85 °C. It also exhibits good mildewproof property after 15 days. Meanwhile, remoldability endows organohydrogels to be recycled and reused, even as substitute materials for soil to cultivate plants. Thus, PVA/GEL/GL organohydrogels as a biological material have great potential great potential in fields of biomedicine, and even industry and agriculture.
