Controlling the electronic structure of a catalyst has become an important approach to tune and optimize its antipoisoning ability and catalytic efficiency for a chemical reaction. Using d -mannitol as a structure-directing agent to induce size transformation and twinned defects in copper particles, penta-twinned Cu elongated pentagonal bipyramids as supports have been synthesized, and HAuCl 4 is reduced in situ to form an AuCu alloy on the surface of Cu, generating a self-supporting AuCu@Cu core–shell structure for application as a glucose sensor in a neutral medium. The AuCu@Cu elongated pentagonal bipyramids with 0.42 at% Au show activities comparable with the Au and Pt catalyst but are more tolerant toward Cl − than Au and more tolerant toward H 3– x PO 4 x − than Cu. The mass activity of AuCu@Cu reaches 0.10 A mg −1 of Au at 0.6 V versus Ag/AgCl (3 m KCl) in a pH 8.0 buffer. The self-supporting AuCu@Cu elongated pentagonal bipyramids are promising catalysts for glucose sensing in a neutral medium. This work offers an effective way to design antitoxic and durable catalysts with ultralow content of noble metal for glucose sensing.

Non-enzymatic electrodes based on noble metals have excellent selectivity and high sensitivity in glucose detection but no such shortcomings as easy to be affected by pH, temperature, and toxic chemicals. Herein, spherical gold-nickel nanoparticles with a core-shell construction (Au@Ni) are prepared by oleylamine reduction of their metal precursors. At an appropriate Au/Ni ratio, the core-shell Au@Ni nanoparticles as a sensor for glucose detection combine the high electrocatalytic activity, good selectivity and biological compatibility of Au with the remarkable tolerance of Ni for chlorine ions (Cl − ) and poisoning intermediates in catalytic oxidation of glucose. This electrode exhibits a low operating voltage of 0.10 V vs. SCE for glucose oxidation, leading to higher selectivity compared with other Au- and Ni-based sensors. The linear range for the glucose detection is from 0.5 mmol L −1 to 10 mmol L −1 with a rapid response time of ca. 3 s, good stability, sensitivity estimated to be 23.17 μA cm −2 mM −1 , and a detection limit of 0.0157 mM. The sensor displays high anti-toxicity, and is not easily poisoned by the adsorption of Cl − in solution.

Plastics, combined with plasticizers, have been widely utilized worldwide. Microplastic fibers (MPFs) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) account for the most predominant microplastics and plasticizers detected in freshwater ecosystem, with their joint toxicity being limited studied. In this study, we employed freshwater algae ( Chlorella vulgaris ) as toxicity test model organism to assess their growth, photosynthesis, metabolism, and oxidative response when exposing to different concentrations of polypropylene MPFs and the co-exposure of DBP. In addition, the toxic interaction between MPFs and DBP was assessed by combining the integrated toxicity value (Integrated Biomarker Response version 2, IBRv2) and the mixture toxicity index (Effect Addition Index, EAI). Our results demonstrated significant toxic effects of MPFs and DBP on C. vulgaris , and highlighted their dynamic interactions with C. vulgaris . Specifically, when combining with DBP, MPFs with high concentrations exhibited significantly increase in algae growth inhibition, photosynthetic pigment contents (Chl-a, Chl-b, and carotenoids), protein contents, and oxidative enzymes (SOD, CAT, and MDA). In terms of integrated toxicity values, higher IBRv2 values were recorded by the combined exposure of MPFs and DBP in contrast with the sole exposure groups, indicating that the combined exposure caused more severe damage to photosynthesis, oxidation and metabolism. In addition, our study recorded synergistic combined toxicity when MPFs were in high concentrations, whereas antagonistic combined toxicity when MPFs were in low concentrations. Our study highlights the MPFs concentration-dependent combined toxicity (synergistic or antagonistic) when exposing to microplastics and plasticizers in freshwater ecosystems.

The Pt/C catalysts applied in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) suffer CO poisoning in the anode, which notably deteriorates the device performance. The metal–support interaction that decreases the CO oxidation stripping potential is a suitable way to prevent CO anchoring the active sites that can reduce or even avoid the poisoning. Herein, the Pt is supported by amorphous NbO x ( x = 1.0–2.5) and CNT to form Pt@NbO x + CNT catalyst, which not only displays the lower initial and peak CO oxidation stripping potential but also exhibits the striking anti-CO poisoning and hydrogen oxidation reaction properties. The initial and peak potential for oxidation stripping of Pt@NbO x + CNT catalyst are 0.162 and 0.332 V, respectively. Moreover, the PEMFC based on Pt@NbO x + CNT catalyst in 100 ppm CO/H 2 exhibits a peak power density of 1.98 W cm −2 , only 17% reduction compared to that in pure hydrogen and the catalyst remains 10 h stability at 0.4 V.
