Developing an efficient and stable separation membrane material for textile water treatment is of considerable significance but challenging due to the limitation of chlorination degradation and bacterial fouling. To solve this problem, in this work, the amides groups in the polyamide structure were converted to imides by targeted grafted from diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC) molecules. Consequently, chlorination degradation and bacterial fouling was markedly improved due to the reduction or elimination of N-H bonds and the increase of DADMAC grafting chains. Chlorine exposure experiment results showed that the salt rejection and water flux of modified membranes change less than that of the pristine membrane, and the surface morphology and chemical structure and basically remained unchanged. Meanwhile, the introduction of quaternary ammonium salt generated a hydrophilic and smooth membrane surface, thus improving the anti-fouling performance. In addition, with the advantage of an excellent antimicrobial activity, hardly any bacterial growth was observed even after 24 h culture, the membrane exhibits satisfactory stability in long-term textile water separation, which is considerable potential in the advanced wastewater treatment. The presented strategy on membrane preparation is believed to be a simple and effective method, which can also be widely used in other industrial wastewater treatment, such as medical wastewater, oilfield wastewater, etc.

The degradation of Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) by catalytic oxidation forms toxic products, and catalysts may be poisoned by chlorine at low temperatures. To address this, a Cu-assisted strategy is proposed for enhancing the catalytic degradation of chlorobenzene (CB) over cobalt oxide nanosheets. The Cu-doped Co 3 O 4 catalysts exhibited lower T 90 values (temperatures with 90 % conversion) and improved stability compared to the unmodified catalyst. These results were attributed to strong metal-metal interactions between Cu species and cobalt oxide nanosheets, which showed a high specific surface area, reduced binding energy of lattice oxygen, higher surface oxygen concentration, and more surface Co 3+ species. These properties promoted low-temperature catalytic activity. In addition, the disappearance of Cu 2+ satellite peak after the catalyst is used, indicating that the Cu 2+ also contributes to the catalytic activity. Furthermore, the in situ FTIR spectra provided details about the reaction mechanism of CB degradation over Cu-doped cobalt oxide nanosheets. The oxygen vacancy generation and the surface absorption of chlorine-containing intermediates were calculated using density functional theory calculations. This study provides new insight into novel pathways for catalyst design aimed at CB degradation.

Improvement of anti-chlorine and anti-bacterial properties of membranes has been a major challenge in desalinating process. In this paper, zero-dimension cage-like structure polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) was in situ armored on the surface of polyamide (PA) membrane and acted as ‘armors’ to prevent active chlorine corrosion and bacterial fouling. PA/POSS hybrid membranes could be easily achieved through a simple two-step interfacial polymerization. Anti-chlorine and anti-bacterial properties of PA/POSS hybrid membranes significantly improved during desalination by tuning the content of POSS ‘armors’. Salt rejection reached approximately 98% after immersing PA/POSS hybrid membranes in the active chlorine solution for 24 h, which showed excellent anti-chlorine property. In addition, the anti-bacterial property of PA reverse osmosis (RO) membranes extremely enhanced after armoring with POSS nanoparticles . This finding demonstrated that the structure and chemical inert nature of POSS enabled PA/POSS membranes to block active chlorine and bacteria. PA/POSS membranes provided a promising approach to improve membrane desalination.

The degradation of chlorine-containing volatile organic compounds (Cl–VOCs) utilizing catalytic combustion technology is subject to the paradox of toxic byproduct formation and catalyst chlorine poisoning. Herein, a CaO-assisted strategy is proposed to resolve the awkward stuff for improving the catalytic combustion performance of chlorobenzene on SmMn2O5. The CaO-collaborated SmMn2O5 exhibits a significant decrease in T90 by 142 and 125 °C compared with unmodified and inert SiO2-composited SmMn2O5, respectively. The integrated characterization results confirm that CaO collaboration causes electron transfer from CaO to SmMn2O5, resulting in a reduction of the orbital overlap between Mn and O atoms to activate lattice oxygen (Olatt). The activated Olatt enables chlorobenzene to combust completely at a lower temperature of 275 °C at which toxic byproducts are not generated. Furthermore, the switching of the dechlorination site from SmMn2O5 to CaO avoids chlorine poisoning of active sites on SmMn2O5 and thus endows CaO-collaborated SmMn2O5 with prominent stability.

Electrocatalytic seawater splitting is a promising technology for sustainable hydrogen production, but its practical application is hindered by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics and corrosion from the chloride ions (Cl − ). Here, a strategy of pre-modifying the anode with carbon dots (CDs) before growing nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is reported to improve its activity and stability in seawater (B-CDs/NiFe LDH). The introduced CDs can efficiently activate high-valent Fe sites and electrostatically repel Cl − to protect the nickel foam substrate. Compared to post-modification of CDs, this strategy reduces CDs dosage by 80 %, while achieving comparable OER performance. The synthesized B-CDs/NiFe LDH exhibits an overpotential of 349 mV at 100 mA cm −2 under alkaline seawater conditions, with electrocatalytic stability over 150 h. This work not only presents a viable approach to the fabrication of noble metal-free anodes for stable seawater electrolysis, but also provides theoretical guidance for the subsequent design of such electrode materials.

Chloride-induced corrosion in reinforced concrete is a primary durability issue that causes large economic loss every year. To improve the intrinsic chloride binding capacity and realize a favorable corrosion protection of cement-based materials are thus crucial to prolong the service life of concrete structures. Here, alumina nano particles (ANPs) were incorporated to improve the chloride binding capacity of cement pastes in chloride solutions and the anti-corrosion performance of mortars under accelerated corrosion process. The ANPs facilitated the formation of alumino-ferrite-mono (AFm)-type phases, thereby improved the content of chemically bound chlorides. Solution calcium (Ca) ions benefited the chloride captured by calcium-(alumino-)silicate-hydrates (C-(A-)S-H) in the assistance of ANPs, especially at high initial chloride concentrations , and further evoked a pH-related chloride binding response. Moreover, the enhanced corrosion resistance was finally realized by incorporating appropriate amount of ANPs because of the filling and chemical effects induced low permeability of mortars. In general, the ANPs possess dual functions in the aspects of chloride binding and corrosion inhibition . These findings are expected to advance the design of high-durable cement-based materials serviced in the marine environment.

The high salinity and coexistence of scaling ions (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , HCO 3 − ) in wastewater challenge the efficacy and durability of palladium (Pd)-mediated electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) reaction for chlorinated organic pollutant detoxification, due to the accompanying Cl − poisoning at Pd sites and scaling on electrode. In a concentrated NaCl solution (5.8 g L − 1 ) with Ca 2+ (80.0 mg L − 1 ), Mg 2+ (30.0 mg L − 1 ) and HCO 3 − (180.0 mg L − 1 ), the EHDC efficiency of Pd towards 2,4-dichlorophenol decreases significantly from 67.8% to 33.1% in 72.0 h of reaction, and the electrode is covered with layers of fluffy aragonite precipitate. Herein we demonstrate the inclusion of a commercial antiscalant 2-phosphonobutane-1,2,4-tricarboxylic acid (PBTC) can prevent both scale formation and Cl − poisoning, leading to an efficient and steady EHDC process. A mechanistic study reveals that the unique dual function of PBTC primarily originates from the bearing phosphonate and carboxyl groups. With the large affinity of these groups (especially the phosphonate group) for scaling cations and Pd, the PBTC can chelate and stabilize the scaling cations in water and replace Cl − at Pd surface. It can also release protons, and trigger the formation of more electron-deficient Pd δ+ species via PBTC-Pd binding, leading to an enhanced EHDC. This work provides effective solutions to the scaling/poisoning issues that commonly encountered in real wastewater and paves a solid road for EHDC application in pollution abatement.
