Using a synthetic antifoulant is an alternative technique to using a natural antifoulant for its economical and large-scale production characteristics. In this study, we synthesized allyl 3-oxzo[d]isothiazole-2(3H)-carboxylate (BIT-C) and a series of other heterocyclic compounds, including triazole, pyridine, and thiazole derivatives. These heterocyclic monomers were used to prepare a new series of acrylic polymers by grafting them onto the side chains. The weight change on the 42nd day was less than −0.091 mg/cm−2, indicating that antifoulants can be released into seawater consistently and enduringly. The antibacterial and anti-algae tests revealed that all the polymers had exceptional inhibition rates onE. coli,S. aureus,Chlorella, andChaetoceros curvisetus, with the highest inhibition rates of 99.81%, 99.22%, 92.70%, and 95.42%, respectively. Furthermore, the oyster and barnacle density and algae coverage rate were only about 200 per square meter and 10%, compared to 1800 per square meter and 100% of a blank plate after 90 days hanging in a real marine environment, showing a promising antifouling performance. This work verifies the possibility of a method for grafting different heterocycles on a single polymer to make a series of polymers that can be useful as an environmentally friendly antifouling coating. Keywords:antifouling coating;heterocyclic antifoulant;antibacterial;anti-algae;marine fouling

Marine biofouling causes huge economic losses and serious problems to maritime industries. Consequently, there is a great demand for environmentally friendly antibiofouling technology. In the present study, we developed novel antifouling coatings by incorporating butenolide derived from marine bacteria into biodegradable poly(ε-caprolactone) based polyurethane. Measurements of mass loss indicated that the polymer was degraded in seawater and that the degradation rate increased in the presence of marine organisms or enzymes. Moreover, measured release rates indicated that butenolide could be released from the biodegradable polymer for at least 3 months and the release rate depended on both the concentration of butenolide and the temperature. Incorporating a naturally occurring resin (rosin) into the biodegradable polymer increased the self-renewal rate and improved the later release rate of butenolide. The field test indicated that the system had excellent antifouling properties.

Controlled release of antifoulant is critical for marine antibiofouling. We have prepared polyurethane with degradable polyester segments consisting of poly(ethylene adipate) (PEA), poly(1,4-butylene adipate) (PBA) or poly(1,6-hexamethylene adipate) (PHA) and used it as the release system for organic antifoulants. The degradation rate of the polyurethane increases with the content of the degradable segments. On the other hand, as the segments change from PEA, PBA to PHA, the degradation rate decreases because the crystallinity increases but the ester group density decreases. Such degradable polyurethane allows the antifoulants to release at a constant rate, where the release rate can be regulated by varying the polyester segments. Marine field tests reveal that the polyurethane-antifoulant system has good antifouling performance. Particularly, the degradable polyurethane exhibits excellent adhesion to the substrate ensuring the long duration of the system.

Two new indole ester derivatives containing acrylamide group were synthesized by Michael addition reaction and Friedel-Crafts reaction based on 5-bromo-1 H -indole. The synthesized compounds were characterized by 1 H Nuclearmagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy ( 1 HNMR) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In the step of the Friedel-Crafts reaction, the optimum process conditions were determined as that the catalyst was AlCl 3 , the reaction time was 3 days and the reaction temperature was 25 °C. The results of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of synthesized compounds showed that the two synthesized compounds have better antibacterial activity than reference. Algal inhibiting experiment shows that indole derivatives have better algae inhibition performance. Anti-protein adsorption experiment of antifouling paints with indole derivative and chlorothalonil as antifouling agents proves that indole derivatives exhibit better protein resistance behaviors. The antifouling paints using indole derivatives as antifouling agents have excellent antifouling properties after 24 months marine field test.

Degradable polymers have proven effective for marine antibiofouling. It is important to improve their performance by optimizing their structures. We have prepared polyurethane with degradable polyester segments in the main chain and hydrolyzable poly(triisopropylsilyl acrylate) (PTSA) side chains and used it as the carrier of organic antifoulant (DCOIT). Our study demonstrates that the degradation rate of the polymer increases as the ester group density in the main chain or the length of side chain increases. On the other hand, the release rate of the organic antifoulant increases with the length of side chain. However, it shows a maximum as the ester group density increases. Marine field tests demonstrate that the antifouling of the system increases as the ester group density or the length of side chain increases.

Biodegradable polyurethane with N-(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)maleimide (TCPM) pendant groups has been prepared via a combination of a thiol–ene click reaction and a condensation reaction. The TCPM moieties acting as antifoulants are released as the polyurethane degrades in the marine environment. The biodegradation and hydrolyzation of the polyurethane were investigated by use of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) and hydrolysis experiments. It shows both the enzymatic degradation rate and the hydrolyzation rate decrease with TCPM content, which facilitates increasing the duration of the polyurethane. Marine field tests reveal that the polyurethane has good antifouling ability since the degradation leads to a self-renewal surface and the release of the antifoulants is controlled.

“From the nature, for the nature” is an instructive strategy to develop environment-friendly antifouling coatings. In this work, bio-sourced poly(lactic acid)-based polyurethane with hydrolyzable triisopropylsilyl acrylate (TSA) side groups has been prepared via thiol–ene reaction and polyaddition. Such a polymer exhibits high adhesion strength (∼2.0 MPa) and a controlled degradation rate tuned by varying its soft segment and TSA content. An environment-friendly coating is prepared with the polymer and an eco-friendly antifoulant (butenolide) derived from marine bacteria. Our study shows that butenolide can be released from the coating in continuous manner with a controlled rate as the polymer degrades in seawater. Digital holographic microscopy tracking analysis demonstrates that the coating can effectively inhibit the adhesion of marine bacteria Pseudomonas sp. Marine field test shows that such coating has excellent antifouling ability for more than 3 months.

Chemical immobilization of antifoulant groups to polymers is a promising approach to develop ecofriendly antifouling materials with static antifouling ability and a durable efficacy. In this work, telomer of dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA), triclosan acrylate (TA), and 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (KH590) is grafted to bis-silanol terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), yielding a novel self-stratifying silicone coating containing nonleaching antifoulants. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis reveals that the antifoulant groups are enriched on the coating surface due to DFMA migration. Such a modified PDMS coating can significantly inhibit the growth of marine bacterial biofilm and the adhesion of diatoms owing to the nonleaching antifoulant groups. On the other hand, the coating exhibits a good fouling release performance since it inherits the low surface energy (≈20 mJ m −2 ) and low elastic modulus (<2 MPa) from PDMS forming a physically dynamic surface. Marine field tests demonstrate that the coating has excellent antifouling ability after immersion in natural seawater for more than 6 months.
