Dual-mode antifouling ability of PVDF membrane with a surface-anchored amphiphilic polymer

Yongliang Chen,Xinzhen Zhao,Chunju He

Polydimethylsiloxane-graft-polyethylene glycol (PDMS-graft-PEG), an amphiphilic polymer with four hydrophilic arms, was prepared and used to improve the antifouling property of PVDF membranes by a dip-coating method. The interface properties of the modified PVDF membranes were investigated and it was found that the increased molecular weight of the PEG segment exhibited a negative effect on the anchoring ability of the PDMS-graft-PEG on the membrane surface. However, the antifouling properties of the modified membranes were significantly improved due to the dual-mode antifouling ability of fouling repulsion (PEG) and fouling release (PDMS). The adsorption mass of BSA on the modified membrane surface decreased to a low level, and an enhanced water flux recovery ratio after washing (FRR-W) of the modified membranes was obtained for two typical pollutants of bovine serum albumin and sodium alginate. It was demonstrated that surface anchoring is an effective way to improve the interface characteristics of membrane materials with functional polymers.

Ultrasmall Cu3(PO4)2 Nanoparticles Reinforced Hydrogel Membrane for Super-antifouling Oil/Water Emulsion Separation

Yuyue Mo,Feng Zhang,Hefeng Dong,Xingzhen Zhang,Shoujian Gao,Shenxiang Zhang,Jian Jin

Membrane fouling is a persistent and crippling challenge for oily wastewater treatment due to the high susceptibility of membranes to contamination. A feasible strategy is to design a robust and stable hydration layer on the membrane surface to prevent contaminates. A hydrogel illustrates a distinct category of materials with outstanding antifouling performance but is limited by its weak mechanical property. In this research, we report a reinforced hydrogel on a membrane by in situ growing ultrasmall hydrophilic Cu3(PO4)2 nanoparticles in a copper alginate (CuAlg) layer via metal-ion-coordination-mediated mineralization. The embeddedness of hydrophilic Cu3(PO4)2 nanoparticle with a size of 3–5 nm endows the CuAlg/Cu3(PO4)2 composite hydrogel with enhanced mechanical property as well as reinforced hydrate ability. The as-prepared CuAlg/Cu3(PO4)2 modified membrane exhibits a superior oil-repulsive property and achieves a nearly zero flux decline for separating surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsions with a high permeate flux up to ∼1330 L m–2 h–1 bar–1. Notably, it is capable of keeping similar permeate flux for both pure water and oil-in-water emulsions during filtration, which is superior to the currently reported membranes, indicating its super-antifouling properties.

A novel janus membrane modified by MXene for enhanced anti-fouling and anti-wetting in direct contact membrane distillation

Xiaoju Yan,Chengyu Yang,Cong Ma,Hui Tao,Shirong Cheng,Lin Chen,Guodong Wang,Xinping Lin,Chengzhi Yao

Membrane fouling and wetting limit the applications of membrane distillation (MD) for wastewater treatment , especially when treating the wastewater with a high concentration of low surface tension substances such as oil and surfactants. In this paper, virgin polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane was modified by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to enhance anti-wetting ability. Then a thin polydopamine (PDA) layer was coated as a reaction platform for further modification. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) was cross-linked with PDA to form a uniform and stable layer, through hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interaction to immobilize hydrophilic MXene, which formed a Janus MXene-PVDF membrane. The MXene layer was the key for superoleophobicity and high liquid entry pressure (LEP) of membrane, capable of mitigating membrane fouling and wetting when dealing with low surface tension wastewater (LSTW). From the experiments results, pristine PVDF membrane showed severe fouling and wetting with flux decline and salt leakage during treatment of LSTW (surfactants containing water, oil-in-water emulsion and sodium dodecyl sulfate stabilized oil-in-water emulsion). However, under the same conditions, the Janus MXene-PVDF membrane exhibited remarkably stable flux (9.3 kg m −2 h −1 , 9.1 kg m −2 h −1 , 10.2 kg m −2 h −1 ) and salt rejection (almost 99.9%) after 15 h operation. Excellent fouling and wetting resistance of MXene-PVDF membrane was mainly attributed to its superhydrophilic and superoleophobic top surface (in-air water contact angle: 30.2°, under-water oil contact angle: 169.9°) and hydrophobic substrate (in-air water contact angle: 130.8°), together with high LEP value (91.1 Kpa). This study provides a viable route to fabricated a Janus membrane with outstanding fouling and wetting resistance for LSTW, oily wastewater and it has great potential for sewage treatment in the future.

High efficient protocol for the modification of polyethersulfone membranes with anticoagulant and antifouling properties via in situ cross-linked copolymerization

Hui Qin,Chuangchao Sun,Chao He,Dongsheng Wang,Chong Cheng,Shengqiang Nie,Shudong Sun,Changsheng Zhao

In this paper, we provide a highly efficient, convenient and universal protocol for blood-compatible modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes via in situ cross-linked copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethl methacrylate (HEMA) and acrylic acid (AA) in PES solutions. Static water contact angle, protein adsorption, platelet adhesion, and clotting time of the modified PES membranes are systematically studied, and the results indicate that the modified membranes show improved hydrophilicity, good blood anticoagulant and antifouling properties after introducing HEMA and AA. Meanwhile, the modified membranes perform low contact activation and complement activation when they come in contact with blood. The effect of the HEMA/AA ratios on the blood compatibility is also investigated to identify the different roles played by HEMA and AA in the modification; the HEMA could more effectively enhance the membrane antifouling property, while the AA could more effectively improve the anticoagulant property. The results indicated that the blood-compatible PES membranes prepared via the in situ cross-linked copolymerization had potential to be used in the field of blood purification.

Antifouling modification of PVDF membranes via in situ mixed-charge copolymerization and TiO2 mineralization

Xueting Zhao,Youyou Lan,Kai Yang,Ruoxi Wang,Lijuan Cheng,Congjie Gao

This study proposes a novel strategy to fabricate antifouling UF membrane with integrated zwitterionic and TiO 2 functionality via in situ mixed-charge copolymerization and TiO 2 mineralization. The mixing of positively and negatively charged monomers at the molecular level endows membrane surface with balanced mixed-charge zwitterionic functionality, and the in situ TiO 2 mineralization endows membrane surface with well-dispersed TiO 2 nanoparticles. Thanks to the unique hydrophilicity of mixed-charges and TiO 2 , the obtained PVDF/P(MAA-TA)-TiO 2 membrane shows greatly enhanced surface hydrophilicity. The outstanding hydrophilicity of the PVDF/P(MAA-TA)-TiO 2 membrane significantly improves permeability and protein rejection compared to that of the unmodified PVDF membrane. What's more, the PVDF/P(MAA-TA)-TiO 2 membrane exhibits excellent antifouling capability against protein with flux recovery rate and fouling removal efficiency about 100%. Results of detailed fouling analysis indicate that both surface fouling and pore fouling were limited on the PVDF/P(MAA-TA)-TiO 2 membrane. The antifouling performance is mainly attributed to the synergistic hydrophilicity of mixed-charges and TiO 2 , and meanwhile the decrease in the surface electronegativity and pore size also plays a role. Results of this study provide a facile and scalable method for designing antifouling UF membrane, and highlight the promising potential of mixed-charges and TiO 2 synergy for manipulating hydrophilic and antifouling modification of UF membranes.

Nanofiltration-Inspired Janus Membranes with Simultaneous Wetting and Fouling Resistance for Membrane Distillation

Yuanmiaoliang Chen,Kang-Jia Lu,Wenxiao Gai,Tai-Shung Chung

Membranes with robust antiwetting and antifouling properties are highly desirable for membrane distillation (MD) of wastewater. Herein, we have proposed and demonstrated a highly effective method to mitigate wetting and fouling by designing nanofiltration (NF)-inspired Janus membranes for MD applications. The NF-inspired Janus membrane (referred to as PVDF-P-CQD) consists of a hydrophobic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane and a thin polydopamine/polyethylenimine (PDA/PEI) layer grafted by sodium-functionalized carbon quantum dots (Na+-CQDs) to improve its hydrophilicity. The vapor flux data have confirmed that the hydrophilic layer does not add extra resistance to water vapor transport. The PVDF-P-CQD membrane exhibits excellent resistance toward both surfactant-induced wetting and oil-induced fouling in direct contact MD (DCMD) experiments. The impressive performance arises from the fact that the nanoscale pore sizes of the PDA/PEI layer would reject surfactant molecules by size exclusion and lower the propensity of surfactant-induced wetting, while the high surface hydrophilicity resulted from Na+-CQDs would induce a robust hydration layer to prevent oil from attachment. Therefore, this study may provide useful insights and strategies to design novel membranes for next-generation MD desalination with minimal wetting and fouling propensity.

Fabrication of a Novel Antifouling Polysulfone Membrane with in Situ Embedment of Mxene Nanosheets

Zhen Shen,Wei Chen,Hang Xu,Wen Yang,Qing Kong,Ao Wang,Mingmei Ding,Juan Shang

Membrane fouling is still a critical issue for the application of ultrafiltration, which has been widely used in water treatment due to its efficiency and simplicity. In order to improve the antifouling property, a new 2D material MXene was used to fabricate composite ultrafiltration membrane with the approach of in situ embedment during the phase inversion process in this study. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), water contact angle, bovine serum albumin rejection and porosity measurements were utilized to characterize the prepared membranes. Due to the hydrophilicity of the MXene, the composite membranes obtained higher hydrophilicity, confirmed by the decreased water contact angle. All the modified membranes had a high bovine serum albumin rejection above 90% while that of the pristine polysulfone membrane was 77.48%. The flux recovery ratio and the reversible fouling ratio of the membranes were also improved along with the increasing content of the MXene. Furthermore, the highest flux recovery ratio could also reach 76.1%. These indicated the good antifouling properties of MXene composite membranes. The enhanced water permeability and protein rejection and excellent antifouling properties make MXene a promising material for antifouling membrane modification. Keywords:MXene (Ti3C2Tx);polysulfone;hydrophilicity;ultrafiltration membrane;antifouling

Sodium Chloroacetate Modified Polyethyleneimine/Trimesic Acid Nanofiltration Membrane to Improve Antifouling Performance

Kaifeng Gu,Sichen Pang,Yong Zhou,Congjie Gao

Nanofiltration (NF) is a separation technology with broad application prospects. Membrane fouling is an important bottleneck-restricting technology development. In the past, we prepared a positively charged polyethyleneimine/trimesic acid (PEI/TMA) NF membrane with excellent performance. Inevitably, it also faces poor resistance to protein contamination. Improving the antifouling ability of the PEI/TMA membrane can be achieved by considering the hydrophilicity and chargeability of the membrane surface. In this work, sodium chloroacetate (ClCH2COONa) is used as a modifier and is grafted onto the membrane surface. Additionally, 0.5% ClCH2COONa and 10 h modification time are the best conditions. Compared with the original membrane (M0, 17.2 L m−2h−1), the initial flux of the modified membrane (M0-e, 30 L m−2h−1) was effectively increased. After filtering the bovine albumin (BSA) solution, the original membrane flux dropped by 47% and the modified membrane dropped by 6.2%. The modification greatly improved the antipollution performance of the PEI/TMA membrane. Keywords:nanofiltration;sodium chloroacetate;modification;antipollution performance

Janus membrane with simultaneously robust scaling, wetting and fouling resistance for hypersaline organic wastewater treatment via membrane distillation

Haiyun Li,Zhengshi Yu,Yibo Lin,Wentian Zhang,Cunxian Lai,Lichao Xia,Fangang Meng,Shanshan Zhao

Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising technology for hypersaline wastewater treatment. However, commercial hydrophobic MD membrane usually suffers from severe wetting/fouling/scaling challenges that seriously hinder its wide applications. It is urgent to develop a robust MD membrane with simultaneous wetting/fouling/scaling resistance in a facile way. In this study, a Janus membrane with a dense hydrophilic nanofiltration top layer was simply fabricated by co-deposition of pyrogallic and polyethylenimine on hydrophobic polyvinylidene difluoride membrane followed by glutaraldehyde cross-linking. The Janus membrane can maintain stable performance during long-term treatment of saline wastewater containing surfactants, oil, and/or mineral ions, suggesting its excellent simultaneous wetting/fouling/scaling resistance. The mechanisms analyses reveal that the excellent wetting/fouling resistance is owed to the combined effects of strong surface hydration barrier, size exclusion, and strong capillary force. Moreover, the positively charged amino groups on the membrane surface further enhance the scaling resistance. Remarkably, the Janus membrane demonstrated exceptional performance during long-term (>100 h) treatment of ethylene waste lye, a hypersaline organic wastewater containing a broad spectrum of contaminants. The membrane possessed stable vapor flux and exhibited near-perfect salt rejection (99 %) and organic rejection (98 %). Our study provides a simple method for designing a robust Janus membrane for treating hypersaline organic wastewater and demonstrates the significant industrial application potential of MD technology.

Enhancing the antifouling and rejection properties of PVDF membrane by Ag3PO4-GO modification

Gongduan Fan,Chongguo Chen,Xiaolei Chen,Zhongsheng Li,Shulei Bao,Jing Luo,Dingsheng Tang,Zhongsen Yan

Ultrafiltration is an environmentally friendly water treatment technology, but membrane fouling significantly impacts membrane performance and service life. Photocatalytic modification of membrane is regarded as an effective way for membrane fouling control. In this study, graphite oxide (GO), Ag 3 PO 4 and Ag 3 PO 4 -GO nanomaterials were applied in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes modification, and the membranes was denoted as P-GO, P-AgP and P-AgP@GO, respectively. Filtration of humic acid (HA) at different operating conditions was adopted in evaluation of membrane performance. Among them, P-AgP@GO had the best permeation, rejection and antifouling performances, and could maintain excellent properties when operation conditions (HA concentration, operation pressure, pH and ionic strength) were changed. Furthermore, the effect of photocatalysis on the self-cleaning performance and its mechanism were revealed. The overall performance of P-AgP@GO could be enhanced by visible light irradiation, and extending the visible illumination time during the filtration was conducive to the reusability.

Preparation and anti-fouling behavior of conductive and hydrophilic polypyrrole modified PVDF composite membrane

Ziyu Liu,Yanqing Liu,Chong Zhang,Takashi Sakamaki,Xianning Li

Conductive filter membranes have shown great potential in alleviating membrane fouling. In this study, polypyrrole (PPy) was used as the conductive material and sodium anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQS) was used as the dopant to perform surface modification on the PVDF membrane. After modification, the contact angle of the membrane decreased from 79.40° to 48.57°, and the electrical conductivity of membrane increased from zero to 1.60 S/cm. The good hydrophilicity and electrical conductivity of PPy-AQS/PVDF endowed it with superior antifouling capabilities, reducing the static protein (BSA) adsorption from 0.147 mg/cm 2 to 0.097 mg/cm 2 . Under the action of an electric field of −0.1 V, the flux decay rate of PPy-AQS/PVDF decreased, and the flux recovery rate improved.

Active antifouling carbon cloth@Ni-Co LDH/Ag membrane for efficient oil/water separation

Atian Xie,Jiuyun Cui,Jin Yang,Chunxiang Li,Yi Wang,Jiangdong Dai

The effective treatment of oily wastewater is of great significance for the protection of the ecological environment and human health. Aiming to prepare a membrane with excellent antifouling properties, a new active antifouling carbon cloth@Ni-Co LDH/Ag (CC@LDH/Ag) membrane was reported here via in situ hydrothermal growth and followed photo-deposition methods. The effects of Ag deposition on self-cleaning ability and surface wettability of CC@LDH/Ag membrane were studied. The experimental results showed CC@LDH/Ag membrane is superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic, and exhibited high separation efficiency (>98.6%) and high flux (6551–22,050 L m −2  h −1 ) for different kinds of oil/water mixtures. Moreover, CC@LDH/Ag membrane also displayed excellent environmental and mechanical durability. Good self-cleaning ability enabled CC@LDH/Ag membrane to be separated at least 30 times, and still maintained high separation performance. The self-cleaning CC@LDH/Ag membrane may hold great application prospects in oily wastewater remediation.
