Antileakage performance of Schiff base-reinforced thermal energy storage wood for indoor temperature control

Zhichen Ba,Feihan Yu,Haobo Fan,Wenxuan Wang,Yonggui Wang,Daxin Liang,Zefang Xiao,Haigang Wang,Yanjun Xie

Thermal energy storage wood has been rapidly developed as a green and renewable energy-saving building material. In this study, bio-based Schiff bases (VF) were prepared from vanillin and furfurylamine via aldehyde–amine condensation and used as a small molecule fixative. Subsequently, VF and dodecylamine were mixed uniformly and impregnated into rubberwood under pressure, affording thermal energy storage wood (TESW-x%VF). The results revealed that TESW-x%VF exhibited adjustable enthalpy (41.67–88.23 J g −1 ) and room-temperature phase transition (25°C–27°C). Moreover, the addition of VF improved the antileakage performance of TESW. According to density functional theory calculations, this is because the adsorption energy between VF and dodecylamine molecules has increased by 3–8 times compared to dodecylamine molecules. The above results provide a solution for the leakage issue associated with organic phase-change materials and aid in the future development of energy-saving wood building materials, which also improves the high-value utilization of chemical components in agricultural and forestry crops.

A template-method synthesis of mesoporous-MgO/expanded graphite for enhancing thermal properties of methyl palmitate-lauric acid phase change materials

Feifei Li,Houru Zhen,Linfeng Li,Yuanyuan Li,Qingmeng Wang,Xiaomin Cheng

Relatively weak thermal conductivity and antileakage performance of phase change materials (PCMs) limit their applications. The present work focuses on the development of a novel composite PCM (MP-LA/MgO/EG) based on the dispersion of expanded graphite (EG) and magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles in a binary mixture of methyl palmitate-lauric acid (MP-LA). MgO/EG, a new supporting material, is assembled using expanded graphite and specially shaped MgO prepared with the surfactant-assisted high-temperature thermal decomposition method. In addition to maintaining the porous structure of EG and preventing the leakage of MP-LA, MgO/EG reduces the interface thermal resistance between the matrix and the PCM molecules because MgO maximizes heat conduction . The thermal conductivity of the proposed material (4.568 W/m/K) is 8.16 times higher than that of MP-LA, and its faster heat transfer rate is reflected directly in the infrared images. The enthalpy of MP-LA/MgO/EG-9 floats in a narrow range with the value of 1.88% during the process of heating-cooling cycles 100 times. The results reported herein can serve as a reference for the functional design of PCM supporting carriers that form good thermal conducting networks and provide the form-stable effect.

Thermal Management System with Intrinsically High Thermal Conductive and Antileakage Composite Phase-Change Materials for Battery Module

Xiaozhou Liu,Qing Deng,Wensheng Yang,Shuyao Li,Weifu Xu,Yueyu Zeng,Zhizhou Tan,Xinkai Tang,Canbing Li,Xiaoqing Yang,Xinxi Li

Phase-change materials with high latent heat can release and absorb large amounts of heat, which has potential application in various fields such as energy storage, electronic devices, and electrical vehicles (EVs). However, there is still a need to improve thermal conductivity and antileakage performances. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) metal–organic hydrogel (HGL) has been prepared by chelating metal ions and organic acids, and the composite phase-change material (CPCM) containing paraffin, HGL and styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) and expanded graphite (PSHE) is designed and prepared. The experimental results show that PSHE exhibits high thermal conductivity (1.64 W/m·K), good thermal stability (98.68%), and super enthalpy (185.4 J/g). It is contributed that the presence of zinc ions in HGL with 3D structure can not only reduce the leakage of PA at high temperature but also improve the thermal conductivity of CPCM. Especially, PSHE2 with HGL: SBS exhibits optimum thermal conductivity at 1:1 ratio, which improves nearly five times than that of PA. Additionally, even at 2 C discharge rate, the maximum temperature (Tmax) and maximum temperature difference (ΔTmax) of battery module with PSHE2 can be controlled below 45.6 and 3.5 °C, respectively. It reveals that PSHE2 can guarantee the long-term cycling stability and thermal stability. Thus, this research can elucidate intrinsically high thermal conductivity and thermal stability CPCM, which has great prospect for next-generation energy storage and EVs fields.

Multifunctional flexible composite phase change material with high anti-leakage and thermal conductivity performances for battery thermal management

Jian Deng,Xinxi Li,Canbing Li,Tingyu Wang,Rui Liang,Songbo Li,Qiqiu Huang,Guoqing Zhang

Composite phase change material (CPCM) as passive battery thermal management system (BTMS) still confronted many challenges such as easy leakage, high rigid and low thermal conductivity . In this study, a multifunction flexible CPCM with high anti-leakage and thermal conductivity performances has been proposed which is utilized the polymerizing and crosslinking reaction with polyethylene glycol and hexamethylene diisocyanate to address the leakage of CPCM in essence. The results revealed that the CPCM exhibited excellent antileakage and elastic performance. Especially, the thermal conductivity of CPCM is obviously improved by 2.8 times owing to the synergistic effect of 3 wt% aluminum nitride and 2 wt% carbon nanotubes. Besides, the maximum temperature of the battery module with multifunction flexible CPCM can be controlled below 45 °C even at 1.5C discharge rate, and the corresponding temperature difference is maintained within 4.3 °C. With these outstanding properties, the multifunctional flexible PEAC can provide an efficient solution to improve the thermal safety of battery packs in applications, which will significantly promote the development of EVs.

A composite phase change material possessing antileakage performance for battery thermal management by constructing a nanoscale polymer framework

Zhubin Yao,Guohua Ye,Runye Huang,Xiaoru Xu,Guoqing Zhang,Xiaoqing Yang

To solve the leakage issue of phase change material (PCM)-based battery thermal management (BTM) technology, a novel composite PCM (CPCM) is prepared herein by constructing a nanoscale resorcinol–formaldehyde (RF) framework to replace the classical micron-scale polymer framework. The three-dimensional (3D) nanoscale RF framework stacks into a 3D continuous mesoporous structure with a pore size of ∼ 30 nm and thereby results in intensive adsorbability toward polyethylene glycol, delivering an excellent antileakage property under long-term heat treatment up to 120 °C. The obtained CPCM possesses a thermal conductivity, latent heat and phase change temperature region of 1.26 W·m −1 ·K −1 , 103.13 J·g −1 and 35–60 °C, respectively. Consequently, superior temperature-control performances for the battery module can be obtained. Even at high discharge rates of 2 and 3C for 10 cycles, the maximum temperature and temperature difference can be maintained below 39.7 and 2.4 °C and 41.7 and 2.3 °C, respectively.

Design and Construction of Photochromic and Antileakage Reinforced Wood-Based Cellulose Microframework/Hexadecanol-Coconut Oil Composite Phase Change Material

Nianrong Feng,Jun Deng,Genhui Teng,Dongying Hu

The development of high-performance shape-stable phase change material composites (SPCMs) with high phase change enthalpy and high conversion efficiency, especially with good photochromic properties, is essential for thermal energy storage. Here, we report that one type of SPCMs with both photochromic and phase change energy storage is obtained by incorporating organic binary composite PCMs (hexadecanol/coconut oil, H/C) and photochromic phosphotungstic acid (PA) into Ochroma pyramidale wood-based cellulose microframe (DOW) through simple vacuum impregnation. When the ratio of hexadecanol to coconut oil is 3:7 and the ratio of phosphotungstic acid to N,N-dimethylacetamide is 4:13.6, the SPCM composite material (DOW-H3C7-4PA) represents a high phase transition enthalpy of 163.7 J/g and an appropriate phase transition temperature of 42.55 °C that can be applied to the environmental temperature adjustment of high-temperature areas (>40 °C) mentioned in this paper, in addition to the excellent thermal stability and photochromic stability; for example, even after 100 thermal cycles and UV radiation cycles, its phase transition enthalpy remains almost unchanged. The DOW-H3C7-4PA composite material also shows good shape stability and leakage resistance. In addition, the high photothermal conversion efficiency (65.71%) of DOW-H3C7-4PA is considered to be a promising candidate for photothermal energy storage applications. Therefore, the manufactured SPCMs (DOW-H3C7-4PA) have high latent heat, good melting/freezing cycle reliability, high photochromic stability, and remarkable light-to-heat energy conversion ability, making them show broad application prospects in energy conversion and storage devices.
