Hydrogels can be used as an alternative coating material for ships against marine biofouling. However, the adhesion of wet and soft hydrogels onto solid metals remains a challenging problem. Here we report the adhesion of a typical hydrogel material, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)–glycerol hydrogel, onto stainless steel substrates and the antifouling potency of the adhered PVA–glycerol hydrogels. Poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) hydrogel and ethyl α-cyanoacrylate (ECA) are used as the binders, and they are found to be able to firmly bond the PVA–glycerol hydrogels onto the stainless steel substrates. The PAH hydrogel does not affect the mechanical properties of the PVA–glycerol hydrogel during use, but it tends to lose the adhesive ability in a dehydrating environment. In contrast, the ECA adhesive can maintain strong bonding between PVA–glycerol hydrogels and substrates upon several water losing/water absorbing cycles, despite some negative effects on the strength of the PVA–glycerol hydrogel. Biological experiments show that the PVA–glycerol hydrogel has a strong settlement-inhibiting effect on the barnacle Balanus albicostatus, suggesting that combining the PVA–glycerol hydrogel with ECA adhesive may have promising applications in marine antifouling.

Being biodegradable and eco-friendly, polyesters are promising in marine anti-biofouling. However, the slow degradation and poor adhesion limit their applications. In the present work, we have prepared poly(ester)-poly(methyl methacrylate) copolymer via radical ring-opening copolymerization of 2-methylene-1,3-dioxepane (MDO) and methyl methacrylate (MMA). The copolymer coating has good adhesion to substrate due to the incorporation of MMA moieties. The main-chain ester bonds from MDO enable the copolymer to enzymatically and hydrolytically degrade, and the degradation rate increases with the ester content. The polymers can serve as a carrier and controlled release matrix for organic antifoulant 4,5-dichloro-2-octylisothiazolone (DCOIT), and the release rate increases with the ester content. Marine field test shows the system of the copolymer and DCOIT has excellent antifouling performance for more than 3 months.

Poly(ether ester) polyols consisting of polypropylene glycol-2000 (PPG-2000) and different ratios of ε-caprolactone and lactic acid (LA) had been prepared by polycondensation reactions. Degradable polyurethane (PU) films were prepared with poly (ether ester) polyols and hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer. Hydrolytic degradation experiments demonstrated that PU films could be degradable in artificial seawater. Importantly, the hydrolytic degradation of PU films in artificial seawater increased with the increase of LA content. The results also showed that the surfaces of PU films were renewed and kept active, as revealed by the scanning electron microscope micrographs of degradation PU coatings. Moreover, the copper ion release rates of PU coatings prepared with poly(ether ester) polyols reached steady state at about 35 days. The degradable polyurethanes based on poly(ether ester) polyols (PPG-2000, ε-caprolactone, and LA) could be effective and durable resins for marine antifouling.

Marine biofouling is a catastrophic problem for maritime industries, which catches researchers’ attention. Antifouling coatings have been proved to be an effective approach to against fouling organisms. Herein, we firstly synthesized polydimethylsiloxane with aminopropyl-terminated pendant groups (APDMS) through a ring opening polycondensation, and then APDMS was reacted with bisphenol A type epoxy resin (DGEBA) to form the epoxy modified polysiloxane-based resin (EAPDMS). The curing behavior of DGEBA/APDMS was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with a non-isothermal curing method. The adhesion strength of EAPDMS was remarkably improved. The results of dynamic mechanical properties (DMA) and tensile tests showed an obvious enhancement of mechanical properties in the modified resin system. Marine field tests revealed that coatings exhibited excellent antifouling performance within 3 months. In brief, the EAPDMS coatings possess outstanding mechanical properties and excellent adhesion strength, showing high potential in the marine antifouling field.

Marine biofouling is a major problem that contributes to the failure of man-made marine structures. Conventional marine antifouling coatings that release heavy metal ions for antimicrobial purposes are no longer in line with today’s environmental issues. In this paper, a layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembled marine antifouling coating based on an addition reaction between polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and phenols to anchor pyrogallic (PG) with an antimicrobial effect on stainless steel surfaces is presented. For this purpose, three phenolics were selected, and their antifouling effects were compared. Field emission scanning electron microscopy, contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR) were used to thoroughly characterize the LBLPGs, and the results showed superior homogeneity of the coatings with no significant delamination. Simulated marine antifouling and friction tests showed that the coating inhibitedStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus),Escherichia coli(E. coli), andPhaeodactylum tricornutum(P. tricornutum) by more than 90% and reduced the friction coefficient of the stainless steel surface from 0.38 to 0.24, demonstrating superior antifouling and friction resistance effects.

Bioinspired slippery surfaces have garnered significant attention as promising solutions to mitigate biofouling. Unlike traditional lubricant-infused porous surfaces, recent research has focused on the integration of lubricants within polymer brush-grafted surfaces. The combination of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer brush and silicone oil has gradually become the most prevalent choice due to their outstanding chemical affinity. However, this conventional coating system also has the potential for improvement to meet the needs of long-lasting and efficient marine antifouling, including i) precisely designing the polymer brush’s chemical structure to match the polarity of a specific lubricant enhances their chemical affinity, and ii) appropriately reduce the coating system’s surface energy to improve the fouling desorption performance. Here, we introduce a systematically engineered polymer brush/lubricant coating system that incorporates fluorinated polysiloxane and perfluoropolyether fluid. This novel coating system exhibits enhanced adhesion strength coupled with reduced surface energy, resulting in superior stability and omniphobic properties. Additionally, it showcases excellent corrosion resistance and significantly deters marine microorganism adhesion, achieving reductions of 98.8 % for P. tricornutum and 99.8 % for Bacillus sp. . Marine field trials, conducted over a 90-day static immersion period, confirm the remarkable antifouling performance, which surpasses most existing slippery coatings. Moreover, under dynamic conditions, organisms adhering for 150 days are readily dislodged by shear force. These findings underscore the pivotal role of systematic design in polymer brush/lubricant coating systems for the advancement of high-performance slippery surfaces tailored for marine antifouling applications.

Nanomaterial-incorporated surfaces with microstructures have been widely used for marine antifouling coatings, yet limited green antifouling coatings are currently available for sustainable application, given the potential environmental effects of nanomaterial-based nanofillers. Here, by using natural sourced nanomaterials (cellulose nanocrystals, CNCs) as nanofillers, a nanocomposite superhydrophobic coating was fabricated via a simple sol-gel synthesis method. Notably, CNCs were firstly applied in the marine antifouling realm to form uniform and stable coatings, which were condensed with hydroxyl groups of hydrolyzed tetrapropyl zirconate, 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, and methyltrimethoxysilane. The synthesized coatings gained a biomimetic microscopic ridge-like surface, where more CNCs contents contributed to finer microstructures. As a result of the influence of CNCs content on surface wettability and antifouling properties, the coating with CNCs accounting for 20 wt% of the total solid content (CNC20) delivered the best antifouling performance. Furthermore, 90-day marine field tests verified CNC20's excellent antifouling ability, reducing fouling by 82 % in comparison to the control group. Such a biomimicry study provides a novel strategy for the development of environmentally friendly coatings with CNCs nanofillers.

Antifouling coatings for marine use are a widely employed method for controlling the settlement and growth of unwanted aquatic organisms on surfaces. In this study, indole derivative N-(1 H -5-bromo indole-3-ylmethyl) acrylamide (BIAM)-functionalized polythiourethane (PTU)/tetrapodal shaped zinc oxide (t-ZnO) nanocomposites (PTU/BIAM/t-ZnO) were synthesized through a Friedel–Crafts Alkylation reaction, thiol-ene click reaction and polyaddition reaction . Nanocomposites' surface characteristics, such as surface free energy , chemical composition, and surface morphology were investigated here. The mechanical characteristics and antifouling properties of the coating materials were also considered. These nanocomposites exhibited not only superior mechanical properties, due to the presence of both PTU and t-ZnO, but also promising antifouling properties owing to the incorporation of BIAM on their surfaces. The adhesion strength of the nanocomposites increased from 0.26 MPa to 0.68 MPa due to the incorporation of t-ZnO particles. Benefiting from the PTU matrix, the tensile strength of nanocomposite can reach over 57 MPa. The PTU/BIAM/t-ZnO nanocomposites demonstrated improved algae resistance and marine antifouling performance compared to the reference PTU/t-ZnO nanocomposite without indole derivative. The PTU/BIAM/t-ZnO nanocomposites exhibit resistance to fouling organisms due to the synergistic effect of the easy-to-clean characteristic of the PTU/t-ZnO and the reduction of the polar component of the surface free energy resulting from the inclusion of indole derivative BIAM on the surface. This, in turn, reduces the interaction between fouling organisms and the material surface. Furthermore, BIAM interferes with the homeostasis of cellular calcium ions , thereby hindering the attachment of fouling organisms. Under the combined action of PTU, BIAM, and t-ZnO, the synergistic effect of good antifouling properties, environmental compatibility, good mechanical properties and strong adhesion to the substrate was achieved.

Marine biofouling poses many hazards to human activities. The introduction of zwitterionic agents as green and sustainable antibacterial agents into antifouling coatings exhibits excellent performance. In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and deacetylated chitin nanofibers (DECHNs) were cross-linked through electrostatic interactions, and hydrophobic SiO2 was used as the coating curing agent to prepare CNC/DECHN@SiO2 zwitterionic marine antifouling coatings. The results showed that when the proportion of CNCs components was 50%, the coating exhibited a 93% antibacterial rate and an 88% antialgae rate. In actual marine environment testing, the comprehensive resistance to marine biofouling reached 93% within 60 days. Our research introduces two natural components with opposite charges to construct zwitterionic complexes, innovatively applying them directly as antifouling agents in coatings. This work not only provides a solution for replacing toxic antifouling agents but also offers new ideas for using zwitterionic polymers directly as antifouling agents.
