Different amounts of AlON have been introduced in calcium hexaaluminate (CA 6 ) using two approaches, that is, one-step and two-step methods, to improve the slag resistance of CA 6 . A one-step method can directly sinter the mixtures combining Al 2 O 3 , CaCO 3 , and Al in flowing nitrogen, in which AlON clusters are always formed because of the poor wettability of Al by Al 2 O 3 , leading to the high porosity of CA 6 /AlON composite. In a two-step method, CA 6 and AlON are prepared separately and then mixed and sintered in flowing nitrogen. Compared with the sample prepared by the one-step method, CA 6 and AlON in composite by the two-step method are more uniformly distributed, and the optimized amount of AlON added is 10wt%. The slag corrosion and penetration test shows that the CA 6 /AlON composite using the two-step method exhibits superior slag corrosion protection. The promoted effect of AlON on slag penetration and corrosion resistance is also discussed.

Magnesia castables have been widely used in metallurgical industries with the advantages of high refractoriness, non-polluting steel, and resistance to alkaline slag. Magnesia castables were prepared using strontium carbonate (SrCO 3 ) as additive to enhance slag resistance and mechanical properties, and the influence of SrCO 3 on the evolution of phases, microstructure and properties of magnesia castables sintered at different temperatures was clarified. The results show that, with the introduction of SrCO 3 (lower than 3 wt.%), elastic modulus, mechanical strength, thermal shock resistance and densification of magnesia castables were significantly enhanced owing to the formation of needle-like Ca 0.9 Sr 0.1 MgSi 2 O 6 phase and liquid phase when sintering at high temperatures, and the introduced SrCO 3 presented minor effects on the mechanical properties of castables for its highly structural stability below 1100 °C. During the slag corrosion process, SrCO 3 and SiO 2 in castables reacted with Al 3+ in molten slag to form SrAl 2 SiO 8 phase, resulting in the increased slag viscosity and suppressed continuing penetration.

MgO–CaO refractories have attracted much attention in the field of clean steel due to the ability of their internal CaO to adsorb elements such as S and P in molten steel. However, there are still some problems such as difficult sintering and insufficient corrosion resistance existing in this system. Different contents of Y 2 O 3 were introduced into MgO–CaO system to prepare MgO–CaO–Y 2 O 3 ternary refractories via traditional and induction sintering methods. The influence of microstructural regulation on the slag-resistant properties of the refractories was investigated. The results show that the introduction of Y 2 O 3 in the MgO–CaO refractories prepared via the two sintering methods leads to the grain boundary reconstruction effect. Under the condition of traditional sintering, when a smaller amount of Y 2 O 3 is introduced into the MgO–CaO refractories, Y 2 O 3 is able to activate the lattice, promote sintering, and improve the densification of the refractories. However, when more Y 2 O 3 is introduced, the excess Y 2 O 3 hinders the sintering densification process. Combined with lamellar intergranular phase generated in the refractories, Y 2 O 3 -based solid solution can react with the slag, increase the slag viscosity and inhibit the penetration of the slag into the refractories. Under the condition of induction sintering, the solid solution of yttrium ions in CaO is increased by using the coupling of electromagnetic and thermal fields. Compared with the MgO–CaO refractories with high Y 2 O 3 content prepared by traditional sintering, the induction sintered refractories have higher densification, which further increases the corrosion resistance. The results provide a new path for developing long-life MgO–CaO based refractories.

In this study, four types of commercial tabular corundum were selected as aggregates, and four Al 2 O 3 –SiC–C castables were prepared under same conditions. The microstructure characteristics of the aggregates were observed. The thermal shock resistance and slag resistance mechanism were evaluated. Dendritic pores were proven to be beneficial for relieving and guiding thermal stress. According to the Lobe method, the dendritic pores provided the aggregates with a higher thermal conductivity and better thermal stability than the circular pores. The role of the aggregate microstructure in resisting slag erosion was discussed through thermodynamic and kinetic analyses. The presence of dendritic pores and a small neck size led to a faster dissolution rate during the slag erosion process. At the same time, the dissolution rate and dissolution amount increased, resulting in the faster supersaturation of the slag. Based on Ostwald's supersaturation theory, a thicker spinel isolation layer would be precipitated on the inner walls of the slag erosion path, thereby preventing the further erosion of the slag.
