Nanocellulose-intercalated MXene NF membrane with enhanced swelling resistance for highly efficient antibiotics separation

Hongli Zhang,Yiling Zheng,Hongwei Zhou,Shilin Zhu,Jie Yang

Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterial-based membranes display attractive properties in molecular separation and transport, which holds their great promise for a host of applications. However, notorious swelling problem of 2D membranes result in unsatisfactory molecular/ions sieving performance, and the enhancement of structural stability for 2D membranes in aqueous solution is still challenging. Herein, we demonstrate how to efficiently stabilize the Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene laminar architecture by the insertion of flexible and hydrophilic carboxylated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs). The importing of CNFs not only acted as a bridge to combine the adjacent 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x sheets and enhance mechanical strength, but also assumed the role of pillar to fix the interlayer distance effectively and improve the anti-swelling properties of Ti 3 C 2 T x membrane. Moreover, the intercalation of nanocelluloses into the interlayer of delaminated Ti 3 C 2 T x is able to distinctly increase the interlayer spacing and create more open gaps for fast and selective molecular transport. When applied in antibiotics separative filtration process, the resultant membrane exhibits outperformed anti-swelling properties in water environment up to 76 h and simultaneously possesses satisfactorily high selectivity of antibiotics (∼99.0 % for azithromycin) with unprecedentedly high pure water permeance (∼26.0 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). Such 2D membranes can be easily fabricated by a facile and patternable vacuum-assisted filtration and nanocellulose induced self-assembly strategy, which holds great potential for their scalability that are applicable to many applications such as seawater desalination, industrial wastewater treatment and remediation of aquatic environment.

Facile preparation and characterization of super tough chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogel with low temperature resistance and anti-swelling property

Xiaotong Xiang,Guoqi Chen,Kai Chen,Xiancai Jiang,Linxi Hou

Facile preparation of super tough hydrogels with low temperature tolerance and anti-swelling property is still a challenging task for researchers. Meanwhile, the vast majority of tough hydrogels were obtained though chemical crosslinking and complicated synthesis or processing method accompanying a large number of harmful chemical reagents. Herein, the super tough chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) (CS/PVA) hydrogels (the maximum compressive strength of 18.97 MPa at a strain of 80% and the maximum tensile strength of 4.02 MPa at a strain of 406.4%) were successfully prepared via a simple post-treatment method. CS/PVA hydrogels were firstly prepared by freezing-thawing process and then soaking in saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution. The resultant hydrogels possess excellent swelling resistance and low temperature tolerance. This work shows that the post-treatment of immersing in saline solution is a feasible way to prepare super tough hydrogels with low temperature tolerance and anti-swelling property. This also would enlarge the application areas of CS.

Enhanced the swelling resistance of polyamide membranes with reinforced concrete structure

Shuhao Wang,Kaifeng Gu,Jian Wang,Yong Zhou,Congjie Gao

Preparation of novel swelling resistance membrane by interpenetrating an immiscible flexible polyisobutylene (PIB) polymer into a rigid polyamide (PA) network by interfacial polymerization. Due to the force interlocking of flexible PIB, polyamide network has high strength and excellent resistance to methanol. The PA layer was characterized by mechanical strength , attenuated total reflection fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), contact angle, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). RO membrane performances were evaluated based on small molecule alcohol (methanol and ethanol) solution of Safranin O. The results show that the flexible PIB interpenetrates well in the rigid polyamide network and improves mechanical strength and swelling resistance. With an increasing concentration of PIB from 0% to 0.30% in the organic phase during the fabrication, the mechanical strength of the PA layer becomes 2.8 times that of the original, and the rejection of Safranin O increased from 95.43% to 99.43%, and the permeability coefficient ( B s ) decreased from 5.22 to 0.47.

Tough and swelling-resistant gellan gum-based biofilms with excellent transparency, surface hydrophobicity and barrier capability

Yong Deng,Panpan Li,Yudong Lian,Zhaoguang Nie,Quan Ji,Xiaomei Ma

The rising energy and environmental crisis brought by extensive usage of disposable synthetic plastic packaging necessitates the pursuit of ecofriendly packaging materials. Herein, a novel type of biofilms from exopolysaccharide gellan gum (GG) were developed through successive sol-gel transition, hydroalcoholic pretreatment and ionic anchoring before air-drying. Universal electronic testing machine, gravimetry, contact angle meter and UV–visible spectrophotometer were employed to investigate the mechanics, swelling-resistance, surface hydrophobicity and barrier property. The results indicate hydroalcoholic pretreatment ameliorates the toughness of GG films, with the breakage elongation and tensile toughness reaching ~17 % and 9.44 MJ/m 3 . Metal-ion anchoring bestows swelling-resistance and surface hydrophobicity to GG films. The equilibrium swelling ratio after Fe 3+ -anchoring dropped to ~150 % in water, in stark contrast with the measurable swelling ratio of those unanchored beyond 2700 % which were followed by loss of dimensional integrity. The surface hydrophobicity is improved significantly with the water contact angle enlarged from 48° to 77° after Fe 3+ -anchoring. Metal-ion anchoring also improves the water vapor barrier performance, and notably Cu 2+ /Fe 3+ -anchoring endows UV light-shielding ability to GG films. The prominent performance along with the environmental friendliness of GG is conducive for future application in single-use packaging materials.

Easy-to-Prepare Flexible Multifunctional Sensors Assembled with Anti-Swelling Hydrogels

Yongqi Yang,Chunyang Lv,Chang Tan,Jingfang Li,Xin Wang

Recent years have witnessed the development of flexible electronic materials. Flexible electronic devices based on hydrogels are promising but face the limitations of having no resistance to swelling and a lack of functional integration. Herein, we fabricated a hydrogel using a solvent replacement strategy and explored it as a flexible electronic material. This hydrogel was obtained by polymerizing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in ethylene glycol and then immersing it in water. The synergistic effect of hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions endows this hydrogel with anti-swelling properties in water, and it also exhibits enhanced mechanical properties and outstanding self-bonding properties. Moreover, the modulus of the hydrogel is tissue-adaptable. These properties allowed the hydrogel to be simply assembled with a liquid metal (LM) to create a series of structurally complex and functionally integrated flexible sensors. The hydrogel was used to assemble resistive and capacitive sensors to sense one-, two-, and three-dimensional strains and finger touches by employing specific structural designs. In addition, a multifunctional flexible sensor integrating strain sensing, temperature sensing, and conductance sensing was assembled via simple multilayer stacking to enable the simultaneous monitoring of underwater motion, water temperature, and water quality. This work demonstrates a simple strategy for assembling functionally integrated flexible electronics, which should open opportunities in next-generation electronic skins and hydrogel machines for various applications, especially underwater applications.

Nanoarchitectonics of a Skin-Like Polymeric Hydrogel with High Anti-Swelling and Self-Adhesion Performance for Underwater Communication

Yunjin Li,Xinyi Lu,Yihan Zhang,Xu Zhu,Li Ma,Ning Ma,Xinyue Zhang,Haibing Zhang,Alaa S. Abd-El-Aziz

Hydrogels are flexible materials characterized by a 3D network structure, which possess high water content and adjustable physicochemical properties. They have found widespread applications in tissue engineering, electronic skin, drug delivery, flexible sensors, and photothermal therapy. However, hydrogel networks often exhibit swelling behavior in aqueous environments, which can result in structural degradation and a loss of gel performance. In this study, polyacrylic acid is utilized as the primary network structure with the incorporation of the natural polymer chitosan. Furthermore, a conductive hydrogel exhibiting good mechanical strength similar to human skin and excellent anti-swelling properties is developed by integrating phytic acid into the hydrogel network. The as-prepared hydrogels exhibited maximum swelling in pure water, achieving an equilibrium swelling rate of 15%. Additionally, a dopamine-grafted polyacrylic acid binder is synthesized through a coupling reaction to enhance the adhesion of the hydrogels to various substrates. The hydrogels demonstrated strong adhesion properties with different substrates. Whether in the air or underwater, the hydrogel sensor effectively monitors human movement behaviors. Furthermore, by utilizing the sensing signals to send Morse code, the hydrogel sensor can facilitate underwater communication. This type of hydrogel sensor is anticipated to play a significant role in wearable sensing applications and underwater communication.

Polyionic liquids supramolecular hydrogel with anti-swelling properties for underwater sensing

Li Chen,Xu Fei,Yonghui Zhou,Jing Tian,Longquan Xu,Yao Li

The preparation of hydrogel-based wearable sensors for underwater application with high mechanical properties and electrical conductivity is an urgent challenge. Here, a supramolecular hydrogel based on polyionic liquids was designed and prepared for underwater sensing. The introduction of functional ionic liquid structures effectively increased the supramolecular interaction in the hydrogel network, which made the hydrogel successfully resist the interference of external water molecules. Depending on the effect of charge and hydrophobic interactions, this supramolecular hydrogel sensor exhibited high tensile (759 %), high tensile strength (0.23 MPa), high sensitivity (GF = 10.76) and extensive antibacterial properties, even in seawater environment. The obtained hydrogel sensor successfully monitored the swimming posture, which was helpful to digitally reflect the limb movement of athletes during underwater sports. This work made progress in the field of underwater wearable sensors based on hydrogels, and this design of multifunctional hydrogel provided a new idea for the development of functional sensors.

Cartilage-inspired hydrogel strain sensors with ultrahigh toughness, good self-recovery and stable anti-swelling properties

Jiajun Xu,Rining Jin,Xiuyan Ren,Guanghui Gao

Conventional hydrogels inevitably “swell” under liquid or physiological conditions, which drastically destroys their mechanical properties, severely limiting their practical applicability. Here, a cartilage-inspired tough, anti-swelling and conductive hydrogel was designed and successfully fabricated. The hydrogel exhibits splendid mechanical strength of 2.75 MPa and good self-recovery, with a recovery efficiency of 96%. In addition, the hydrogel also has anti-swelling properties in different solutions, including H2O, DMSO, physiological saline, seawater and aqueous solutions with different pH values from 3 to 11. Surprisingly, the mechanical strength of the hydrogel is significantly improved (up to 4.05 MPa) after swelling in H2O for 24 h. Moreover, the presence of dynamic ions (Fe3+, Na+, Cl−) in the system also imparts superior conductivity to the hydrogel, which could accurately monitor human motions (bending of neck, elbow, wrist and knee) as a flexible strain sensor. Therefore, this biomimetic hydrogel should have broad application in various fields in complex environments, for example in electric skin, biosensors, tissue engineering, etc.

Super-Strong, Nonswellable, and Biocompatible Hydrogels Inspired by Human Tendons

Chunhui Luo,Min Huang,Xinxin Sun,Ning Wei,Huan Shi,Hui Li,Min Lin,Jing Sun

Fabricating artificial materials that mimic the structures and properties of tendons is of great significance. Possessing a tensile stress of approximately 10.0 MPa and a water content of around 60%, human tendons exhibit excellent mechanical properties to support daily functions. In contrast to tendons, most synthetic hydrogels with similar water content typically exclude qualified strength, swelling resistance, and biocompatibility. Herein, a facile strategy based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and tannic acid (TA) is demonstrated to tackle this problem via a combination of sequential steps including freezing–thawing PVA aqueous solutions to form crystalline regions, prestretching and air drying in confined conditions to induce anisotropic structures, soaking in TA solutions to form multiple hydrogen bondings between PVA and TA, and finally dialyzing against water for the removal of residual TA molecules and the rearrangements and homogenization of multiple hydrogen bonds. The obtained PVA hydrogels possess hierarchically anisotropic structures, where the alignment of PVA bundles promotes high modulus, while the hydrogen bonding between PVA and TA endows them with an energy dissipation mechanism. Benefitting from the synergy of material composition and structural engineering, the obtained hydrogel displays super-strong mechanics (a tensile stress of 19.3 MPa and a toughness of 32.1 MJ/m3), outperforming most tough hydrogels. Remarkably, this hydrogel demonstrates excellent swelling resistance. It barely expands after immersion in deionized water, phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and SBF aqueous solutions for 7 days with the strength and volume nearly the same as their initial values. All of the features, combined with excellent cytocompatibility, make it an ideal material for biotechnological and biomedical applications.

Regulating natural galactomannan into composite hydrogels for improved adhesion, anti-swelling capability and efficient dye pollution removal

Yang Tan,Qihui Gu,Qingqing Xu,Zhe Ji,Chen Su,Zhe Ling

Constructing bio-based composite hydrogel materials are receiving much interest, while regulating the interactions of the hydrogel components and integrating functions for multi-application meet various challenges. Herein, composite hydrogels were prepared by cross-linking of poly-acrylamide (PAM) and poly-N-[3-(Dimethylamino) propyl] acrylamide (PDMAPAA), assisted by natural galactomannan (GM) regulation. Even distribution and compatibility of GM in the three-dimensional materials were proved by a series of chemical and morphological characterizations, which favored the improvement of mechanical properties (~80 kPa) and flexibility. Besides, the hydrogels were well-connected with double networks of noncovalent intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions and hydrophobic interactions, in addition to covalent-linked polymers. Due to great amount of inner hydrogen bond linkages, the hydrogels present satisfying anti-swelling capabilities (<15 %), exhibiting high potential for application in water treatment. Meanwhile, abundant surface functional groups provided possibilities to form interactive layer with the various substrates surface, exhibiting highly adhesive properties. Significant dyes adsorption capabilities were revealed on the hydrogels according to the electrostatic attraction with Congo red and hydrogen bond interactions with Brilliant green respectively. Thus, the proposed composite hydrogels integrated multi-functions due to the tuning the surface groups and cross-linking interactions, which provided deeper understanding on bio-based materials on fields of water treatment and environmental protection.

Fabrication of a high strength, swelling resistance, and conductive hydrogel for flexible underwater sensor via ketalization

Kejun Zhong,Jie Xiang,Yu Liu,Chuanlin Song,Yuetong Mu,Ting Yao,Kai Zhao,Tianfeng Gu,Pengxiang Jia,Wenyan Zhang

Conductive hydrogels have been widely applied in biomedical and wearable electronic devices due to outstanding physical properties such as electrical conductivity, excellent flexibility, and biocompatibility. However, the poor swelling resistance of conventional conductive hydrogels would lead to a significant decrease in their electrical conductivity and mechanical strength in wet or underwater environments, which largely limited their application. Here, a high strength, swelling resistance, and conductive hydrogel was prepared via the formation of ketals. First, ketalization between hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was conducted using acid as the catalyst. Then, the hydrogel was fabricated through the polymerization of HEMA in the presence of polypyrrole (PPy). The resulting hydrogel showed high mechanical strength (the tensile strength was 557.7 kPa, and the breaking elongation was 451.4 %, the toughness was 1730.7 kJ/m 3 ), good conductivity (0.78 S/m) and swelling resistance (the equilibrium swelling rate was 21.1 %). In addition, the hydrogel displayed excellent stability and high sensitivity as an underwater strain sensor. It was also found that the hydrogel indicated voltage piezoresistivity, photo deformation performance, charge storage properties, and high sensitivity for heavy metal ion detection. Thus, the obtained hydrogel had a huge application potential for multifunctional flexible underwater sensors.

Anti-swelling conductive polyampholyte hydrogels via ionic complexations for underwater motion sensors and dynamic information storage

Xiaoqing Ming,Yifeng Sheng,Le Yao,Xiangrui Li,Yangyu Huang,He Zhu,Qi Zhang,Shiping Zhu

Swelling of hydrogels in aquatic environment is ubiquitous but unfavorable for underwater applications, which dramatically diminishes their mechanical properties. In this study, we report an anti-swelling conductive hydrogel based on a polyampholyte copolymer of acrylic acid and 1-butyl-3-vinylimidazolium bromide. The hydrogel exhibits high optical transparency, remarkable mechanical property, and good ionic conductivity. The anti-swelling property is achieved by balanced ionic complexation and hydrogen bonding with careful selection of the monomer feeding ratios. The conductive hydrogel is capable of sensing accurate and stable electro-mechanic responses under both small and large strains, making it a good candidate as strain sensors for monitoring human motions both in air and underwater. Furthermore, the unique material is patternable due to asymmetric swelling and shrinking kinetics, thus providing opportunities for the realization of dynamic information storage. It is believed that our design of anti-swelling conductive hydrogel can be a driving force towards broadening applications of hydrogel iontronics.
