Yttrium oxide material exhibits excellent vacuum and high-temperature chemical stability, making it an ideal first-choice refractory material for superalloy smelting. However, its poor fracture toughness and low thermal shock stability seriously limit its service life. The ferroelastic toughening phase LaNbO 4 provides excellent fracture toughness due to the ferroelastic domain switching toughening effect. This study focused on yttrium oxide materials, utilizing Y 2 O 3 , La 2 O 3 , and Nb 2 O 5 fine powders as the main raw materials. By incorporating ferroelastic functional unit characteristics, a pre-synthesis LaNbO 4 phase with good intrinsic fracture toughness was introduced into the Y 2 O 3 matrix. The effects of different LaNbO 4 contents on the phase composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, and thermal shock resistance of Y 2 O 3 /LaNbO 4 composite materials were subsequently investigated. The following results were obtained: 1) The optimal pre-synthesis temperature of LaNbO 4 was 1200 °C. At this temperature, LaNbO 4 powder with a fine grain and uniform grain size could be synthesized. 2) The Y 2 O 3 and LaNbO 4 phase resulted in mutual solid solution formation, leading to a change in grain size and mechanical strength of the Y 2 O 3 /LaNbO 4 composite material. 3) The addition of an appropriate amount of LaNbO 4 resulted in the formation of a structure filled with LaNbO 4 grains between the grain boundaries of Y 2 O 3 , effectively improving the fracture toughness and thermal shock stability of the materials. 4) The hardness and strength of LaNbO 4 were lower than the Y 2 O 3 phase, making the selection of LaNbO 4 phase addition to Y 2 O 3 crucial. The excessive addition of the LaNbO 4 phase caused the LaNbO 4 phase in the material to dominate. The hardness and strength of the Y 2 O 3 /LaNbO 4 composite materials were inferior to those of the Y 2 O 3 material, however, the fracture toughness and thermal shock stability improved due to the ferroelastic toughening effect. Therefore, an optimal amount of LaNbO 4 phase should be added to balance the fracture toughness and thermal shock stability of Y 2 O 3 /LaNbO 4 composite materials, while maintaining the hardness and strength of the Y 2 O 3 phase.

Nanoporous gold (NPG) offers promise in electronic packaging due to its high compressibility, excellent conductivity, and high thermal conductivity. However, fabricating ultrafine (1–10 μm) conductive NPG microspheres presents a challenge. Herein, we report a novel method for preparing high-volume shrinkage NPG microspheres (NPGMS) with a particle size range of 2.3–8 μm (average 5.06 μm, calculated by ImageJ software). The method involves preparing gold-copper precursors via spray freeze-drying, achieving spheroidization through non-wetting effects at the liquid-solid interface, and fabricating NPGMS by chemical dealloying. Statistical analysis shows a 79 % average volume shrinkage upon dealloying. By using these high-volume shrinkage NPGMS, we fabricated an NPGMS anisotropic conductive film (NPGMS-ACF) and demonstrated its superior performance in 500-micron pitch Flex-on-Glass (FOG) bonding. Remarkably, at only 5 wt% powder loading, the NPGMS-ACF exhibited significantly improved connection reliability compared to commercial ACFs. In cyclic thermal shock testing, NPGMS-ACF packaged devices displayed exceptional stability, with a resistance change of 0.468 Ω (18.4 % change) after 5 cycles. In contrast, commercial ACF packaged devices failed after one cycle, with resistance changes exceeding 100 MΩ. The improved performance of NPGMS-ACF stems from: (1) NPGMS’s excellent thermal and electrical conductivity; (2) enhanced chip-substrate bonding due to the porous structure’s high compressibility, effectively reducing thermal stress. These findings establish NPGMS-ACF as a promising candidate for advanced liquid crystal display (LCD) packaging, providing enhanced thermal shock resistance and adhesive reliability.

Yttrium oxide is widely recognized as a critical refractory material for superalloy purification smelting, owing to its high melting point, excellent vacuum chemical stability, and low alloy wettability. However, its inherent brittleness and high thermal expansion coefficient lead to poor thermal shock resistance, which severely restricts its practical industrial applications. To address this limitation, this study utilized La 3+ /Nb 5+ co-doping to fabricate Y 2 O 3 -based composites and systematically investigated their phase structure, microstructure, and overall properties. XRD Rietveld refinement and density functional theory (DFT)-based first-principles simulations confirmed that La 3+ preferentially substitutes Y 3+ at the Y1 lattice site, while Nb 5+ occupies the Y2 site, inducing significant lattice distortion and generating cation vacancies for charge balance. Microstructural observations revealed that co-doping triggers bimodal grain growth-characterized by small, loosely bonded grains with low Nb 5+ content and large grains containing intergranular pores attributed to high Nb 5+ substitution-resulting in increased apparent porosity but enhanced material toughness. Mechanical and thermal shock tests showed that while room-temperature flexural strength decreases, thermal shock resistance is drastically improved. When the La 3+ /Nb 5+ co-doping molar ratio was Y 2 O 3 : La 2 O 3 : Nb 2 O 5 = 1:0.050:0.050 (corresponding to the YLN10 sample), the composite exhibited the optimal overall performance: its room-temperature flexural strength reached 45.57 MPa, residual strength retention after thermal shock was 58.43 %, and elastic modulus retention was 87.91 %, effectively balancing mechanical properties and thermal shock stability. These improvements are primarily attributed to pore-mediated thermal stress dissipation and crack deflection effects. This work demonstrates that La 3+ /Nb 5+ co-doping is an effective strategy to balance the mechanical rigidity and thermal shock stability of Y 2 O 3 , providing a valuable reference for optimizing refractory materials for high-temperature superalloy smelting.

Cordierite diesel particulate filters (DPFs) were prepared using pure cordierite powder with organic binders, sodium silicate aids and pore formers by extrusion technique. The orthogonal test method was adopted to investigate the optimal value of the multi-objective and multi-factor problems. Based on results from statistical analysis, sintering temperature is the most important factor. The optimal parameters for balanced overall performance were determined as a 3 h holding time, 10 wt.% pore former, 12 wt.% sintering aid, and a sintering temperature of 1150 °C, representing a compromise among the individually optimal conditions for porosity, compressive strength, and thermal shock resistance identified by range analysis. The sodium silicate liquid increased and viscosity decreased with the increasing of temperature, which led to the formation of glass phases and the improvement of density. Therefore, with increasing sintering temperature, the porosity and coefficient of thermal expansion decreased. Both the mechanical properties and chemical stability of the prepared samples are strengthened. When the sintering temperature was 1150 °C, the prepared samples with high porosity (56.04%), compressive strength (5.88 MPa), bending strength (13.10 MPa), and low thermal expansion coefficient (CTE, 1.82 × 10 −6 /°C) showed the best comprehensive performance of thermal shock resistance and filtration efficiency. These results demonstrate great potential for DPF applications and provide a reference for the design of other honeycomb ceramics with optimum level of liquid phase.

This paper develops a novel adhesive for in-situ joining C/C composites to C/C-SiC composites using a phenolic resin modified with inert fillers (SiC and graphite powders). The primary phase of the reaction bonding joint layer is SiC, which matches the thermal expansion coefficient of the matrix better than metallic phases, making it an improvement over traditional brazing. The effect of filler content on joint strength, oxidation resistance, and thermal shock resistance has been systematically investigated. The results show that increasing the filler content from 0 to 50 wt% increases shear strength up to a maximum of 25.97 MPa at 15 wt% SiC and 15 wt% graphite powder. The oxidation and thermal shock tests reveal that the joints exhibit a decrease in shear strength due to oxidation at temperatures above 600 °C, with a significant reduction occurring between 600 °C and 700 °C. After seven thermal shock cycles at 800 °C, the shear strength of the joints remains relatively high, indicating the good thermal shock resistance of the bonding layer. The method proposed in this study provides a new approach for controlling residual silicon and enhancing the properties of C/C-SiC joints.

This work demonstrates a strategic approach to enhance the thermomechanical performance of Si 3 N 4 /BN composites through interface optimization and control of powder particles. By adding the MgO sintering additive at BN interfaces coupled with 0.5 μm Si 3 N 4 fiber precursor, we achieved full densification with mechanical properties, attaining a density of 3.19 g·cm −3 , the remarkable flexural strength of 627.36 MPa, and fracture toughness of 13.48 MPa·m 1/2 . The composites exhibit exceptional thermal shock resistance, retaining 586.19 MPa (93.44 % retention) after 1000 ℃ thermal shocking, facilitated by in situ formation of a continuous SiO 2 glass barrier that effectively prevents oxidation. Intriguingly, the residual strength shows a trend of first decreasing and then increasing with the increase of Δ T . At Δ T = 1500 ℃, the composite maintains the residual strength of 469.46 MPa (74.83 % retention), outperforming conventional monolithic ceramics through a self-healing mechanism enabled by viscous flow of the glass phase. Microstructural evolution analysis coupled with fracture morphology establishes direct correlations between the interface, mechanical properties, and thermal-shock resistance. These findings provide fundamental insights into designing composites with excellent thermal-shock resistance for ultrahigh-temperature structural applications.

SiO 2 aerogel fibers are widely regarded as one of the lightest solid materials, exhibiting exceptional thermal insulation properties. However, achieving both high elasticity and spinnability remains a significant challenge in the fabrication process. A scalable and efficient vortex-assisted multi-stage spinning strategy has been employed to fabricate Silica Nanofiber Aerogel Fibers@Polysiloxane/Aramid Aerogel Fibers (SiNAFs@PSO/Aramid). These fibers are characterized by a hierarchical architecture, consisting of an interwoven SiO₂ nanowire aerogel network as the core and a robust PSO/Aramid composite shell. SiNAFs@PSO/Aramid demonstrate ultralow density (<0.15 g/cm 3 ), exceptional mechanical resilience (tensile strength >4 MPa), and an ultra-low thermal conductivity of 0.033 W/m·K, outperforming conventional thermal insulation materials. Mechanical integrity remains stable under extreme thermal ranging from −196 °C to 500 °C, ensuring durability in harsh environments. Superior weaveability enables the fabrication of highly adaptable, three-dimensional foldable textiles with tunable geometric configurations. Upon exposure to high temperatures, an in-situ transformation into SiOC ceramic composites occurs, significantly enhancing thermal shock resistance and mechanical stability. Flexibility and geometric adaptability of these aerogel fabrics make SiNAFs@PSO/Aramid well-suited for applications requiring diverse shape configurations, as well as high-temperature thermal insulation.
