As an environmental-friendly and cost-effective technology, interfacial evaporation mediated by photo-thermal materials has shown great potential in solar desalination and wastewater treatment. However, salt accumulation or fouling on the surface of solar absorbers during water evaporation, especially in high-salinity brines, is seemingly inevitable for current solar evaporators, resulting in severely weakened steam generation performance as well as limited long-term use. Here, inspired by water strider, we demonstrate a new type of solar evaporator consisting of a hydrophobic frame, a hydrophilic solar absorber and a heat-insulation layer. Relying on the surface tension force generated by the hydrophobic frame, the solar evaporator can suspend stably just underneath water surface, enabling the confinement of a thin water film on solar absorber for salt-resistance and efficient energy utilization. More notably, the suspending depth is kept almost unchanged in different-salinity brines, achieving high evaporation rates (1.45 kg m -2 h - 1 and 1.35 kg m -2 h - 1 ) in highly concentrated salt solutions (15 wt% and 20 wt% NaCl) under one-sun illumination. No salt-accumulation is observed during the evaporation process till the limit of salt-saturation, and stable evaporation performance is achieved under dynamic water environment. With the merits of antifouling and excellent evaporation performances, the new concept of “suspended evaporators” provides great opportunities in solar-based water desalination and treatment, especially for high-salinity seawater or in closed-systems.

Conventional drilling fluid viscosity enhancers have poor anti-temperature and anti-salt properties, making it difficult to regulate the rheological properties of drilling fluids in the high-temperature, high-mineralisation environment of deep formations, which is prone to causing downhole accidents such as stuck drills and well-wall instability. In the present study, a salt-responsive amphiphilic hydrophobically attached polymer (PAADS) was synthesised by free-radical micellar polymerisation and used as a viscosity builder for saturated sodium chloride drilling fluids. The molecular structure and thermal stability were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric analysis . The results reveal that the molecular structure of PAADS is consistent with the expected target and has good thermal stability . The viscosity-increasing performance of PAADS in a saturated sodium chloride drilling fluid was evaluated according to the American Petroleum Institute standard. PAADS can effectively maintain the rheological performance of the drilling fluid under high-temperature and high-salt conditions, and the apparent viscosity retention rate of the saturated sodium chloride drilling fluid containing 2 wt% PAADS can be up to 47.5 % after 180 °C hot rolling. NaCl exhibits significant salt-responsive properties by affecting the hydrodynamic radius of PAADS molecules. In addition, PAADS solutions exhibit excellent shear dilution, viscoelasticity and stable internal space structure. This study provides new ideas for salt-resistant drilling fluid additives, which are of great significance for the efficient development of deep oil and gas resources.

Gel treatment is a highly effective technique for conformance control, significantly managing water production and enhancing oil recovery in mature reservoirs. However, the performance of conventional hydrogel systems often deteriorates under harsh conditions such as elevated temperatures and high salinity. To overcome this limitation, we developed a hydrogel with exceptional stretchability and resilience by integrating phenyl nanospheres (PNSs) as nanocross-linkers within polyampholyte chains. The PNSs were synthesized through precipitation polymerization of divinylbenzene in a water/ethanol solvent. P(AM-AMP-DAD)PNS gels were fabricated by copolymerizing acrylamide (AM) with equimolar amounts of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonate sodium (AMPS-Na) and diallyl dimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC), utilizing PNSs as cross-linkers. This unique structure achieved a remarkable breaking elongation of 920% at 100 kPa and exhibited no fractures after five cycles at 400% strain. Hydrophobic interactions among PNSs created dynamic association domains, enabling reversible energy dissipation and improving mechanical robustness. The antipolyelectrolyte effect of the polyampholyte chains provided exceptional fracture resistance in ultrahigh-salinity environments. The swelling ratio of P(AM-AMP-DAD)PNS gels remained stable and even slightly increased in formation water, particularly at 130 °C, where it was 1.2 times higher than at room temperature. Furthermore, this hydrogel demonstrated long-term stability under extreme conditions (130 °C, 2.2 × 105 mg L–1 salinity, Ca2+ + Mg2+ = 1.3 × 104 mg·L–1) for up to 60 days. Core-flooding tests revealed that the fractured core, treated with P(AM-AMP-DAD)PNS particles and subjected to high-temperature aging, achieved a breakthrough pressure exceeding 6 MPa, with a plugging efficiency of 99.93%. These results confirm the hydrogel’s superior plugging performance under ultraharsh reservoir conditions, making it a promising candidate for enhanced oil recovery applications.

Sufficient and clean freshwater is still out of reach for billions of people around the world. Solar desalination from brine is regarded as one of the most promising proposals to solve this severe crisis. However, most of the reported evaporators to date still suffer from the decreasing evaporation rate caused by salt crystallization accumulated on their surface. Here, inspired by the vascular tissue structure, transpiration, and antifouling function of reed leaves, we design biomimetic hierarchical nanofibrous aerogels with parallel-arranged vessels and hydrophobic surfaces for highly efficient and salt-resistant solar desalination. Foldable vessel walls and flexible silica nanofibers give the reed leaf-inspired nanofiber aerogels (R-NFAs) excellent mechanical properties and enable them to withstand repeated compression. Besides, the R-NFAs can efficiently absorb sunlight (light absorption efficiency: 94.8%) and evaporate the brine to vapor, similar to reed leaves (evaporation rate: 1.25 kg m–2 h–1 under 1 sun). More importantly, enabled by the hydrophobic surfaces and parallel-arranged vessels, the R-NFAs can work stably in high-concentration brine (saturated, 26.3 wt %) under high-intensity light (up to 6 sun), demonstrating potent salt resistance. It is expected that R-NFAs with combined antisalt pore and surface structures will provide a designed concept for salt-resistant solar desalination.

In recent years, solar-driven interfacial evaporation materials for seawater desalination and wastewater treatment have garnered significant interest. Hydrogels are considered promising candidates due to their high evaporation rates. However, traditional hydrogel-based solar evaporators are limited by the poor salt resistance and deteriorated mechanical properties. This work successfully constructed a Janus PSPH@CP double-layer solar evaporator with excellent comprehensive performance. It consists of a hydrophobic C/PDMS (CP) coating and a hydrophilic PSPH substrate using polyurethane foam (PU) as skeleton, with its pores filled with the SA/PVA hydrogel and hollow SiO 2 micro-spheres. The superhydrophobic carbon-containing upper coating provides robust light absorption capacity (97 %) and effective salt resistance, while the lower PU foam provides the solar evaporator a solid porous framework with excellent mechanical property. The SP hydrogel, which wraps the inner wall of the PU, is used as a water transport medium due to its superhydrophilic network. Finally, the hollow SiO 2 micro-spheres are embedded in the pores to enhance thermal insulation and optimize thermal management. The integration of the hydrogel and hollow SiO 2 microspheres optimized evaporation enthalpy and thermal management, resulting in an evaporation rate as high as 2.72 kg m -2 h −1 . Meanwhile, the asymmetric wetting characteristics of the solar evaporator’s enable strong salt resistance. As a result, an optimal between the evaporation efficiency and salt resistance is obtained in the fabricated PSPH@CP solar evaporator. The efficient water evaporation, excellent salt resistance, straightforward large-area preparation, and low-cost raw materials suggest that the Janus PSPH@CP solar evaporator has broad prospects for practical applications.

Thermothickening polymers are a novel type of material developed for enhanced oil recovery applications in high-temperature and high-salinity oil reservoirs. However, the existing synthesis process of thermoviscosifying polymers is complex and of high cost, both of which limit the wide application of thermoviscosifying polymers. In this study, a thermothickening water-soluble polymer (PHAD) with a low concentration was synthesized by a “graft from” method, with acrylamide and diacetone acrylamide as grafted monomers and hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose as the backbone chain. The basic parameters for PHAD copolymers were systematically studied in comparison with their homopolyacrylamide counterpart. The results show that the PHAD copolymers exhibited excellent thermothickening ability even when the polymer concentration was 0.2 wt % (total salinity is 9350.08 mg·L–1) upon increasing the temperature from 25 to 90 °C, where the apparent viscosity enhancement changes from 4.0 to 13.3 times with increasing the diacetone acrylamide content in PHAD copolymers. The PHAD copolymers also showed good salt tolerance, thermal stability, and viscoelastic properties under harsh reservoir conditions, which are attributed to the synergistic effect of the rigid heterocyclic ring structure and hydrophobic intermolecular association of thermoresponsive monomers within polymer chains. Moreover, the core displacement experiment and etched glass microscopic model show that the PHAD copolymers have good migration in porous media. Due to its high sweep efficiency, the PHAD copolymer has a higher recovery factor (14.0%) than polyacrylamide (4.3%), which makes it more suitable for salt-tolerant and temperature-tolerant tertiary oil recovery chemicals.

The thickening ability of water-soluble polymers is significantly diminished in the presence of metal ions. Here, we successfully developed a novel double-tailed hydrophobic monomer, 2-octyldodecyl methacrylate (ODMA), through a highly efficient one-step esterification process. Subsequently, ODMA was incorporated into hydrophobic association polymer (HAP) via free radical copolymerization with acrylamide (AM) and acrylic acid (AA). The resulting polymers exhibited remarkable salt-responsive rheological properties, with a viscosity of 1035 mPa·s in 150 g/L NaCl solution, significantly higher than that observed in fresh water (440 mPa·s). The viscosity and elasticity were also enhanced under external disturbances in rheological measurements. The phenomena are attributed to the strong hydrophobic interactions by the double tailed hydrophobic structure, which can be observed in the scanning electron microscopy images. This innovative strategy for constructing double-tailed hydrophobic association polymers provides valuable insights and a promising pathway for the rational design of next-generation salt-resistant polymeric materials.

Deep and ultra-deep drilling operations face significant challenges such as high temperatures and salinity levels. Drilling fluids are prone to failure under these conditions, causing increased filtration loss and frequent downhole accidents. To address these critical issues, this study utilised the high-temperature-stable adsorption properties of siloxanes to synthesise a multi-target adsorption-type fluid filtrate reducer, PFS-1. The molecular structure and thermal stability of PFS-1 were characterised using 1 H NMR, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Its effects on the microstructure of drilling fluid were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and zeta potential analysis, thereby elucidating the interaction mechanism between PFS-1 and clay particles. Experimental results demonstrate that PFS-1 possesses excellent thermal stability, with a decomposition onset temperature exceeding 318°C. After thermal ageing at 240°C for 16 h and 72 h, the filtration loss of drilling fluid containing 2 wt% PFS-1 was 9.1 mL and 9.7 mL, respectively. Additionally, in a 15 wt% NaCl brine-based drilling fluid system, the API filtration loss was just 5.6 mL after ageing at 220°C with 2 wt% PFS-1. Results confirm the superior high-temperature resistance and salt tolerance of the novel filtration reducer. Through the synergistic effect of Si–O–Si chemical adsorption and ionic bonding, PFS-1 forms a stable multi-point adsorption on the surface of the clay particles, inhibiting their hydration and aggregation and thereby reducing the fluid filtration loss. Furthermore, the performance of PFS-1 was improved by 18.75 % compared to that of commercial products, indicating its strong potential for application in demanding drilling environments characterised by ultra-high temperatures and high salinity.

Addressing global freshwater scarcity, solar-driven interfacial evaporation (SDIE) technology has garnered significant attention due to its sustainability and economic advantages. However, challenges including salt accumulation, substantial heat loss, and biofouling still persist when treating the water in nature. Herein, we developed a BM/BPMC Janus aerogel evaporator composed of a hydrophilic top layer and a hydrophobic bottom layer. This aerogel with a self-floating capability, reduced water evaporation enthalpy, enhanced anti-biofouling properties, salt resistance, and efficient thermal localization. Its hydrophilic top layer, fabricated by embedding MoS 2 @MWCNTs-OH within a bacterial cellulose (BC)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) matrix, exhibits synergistic photothermal-antibacterial functionality. The hydrophobic insulating bottom layer, constructed from silanized BC, achieves an ultralow thermal conductivity of 0.036 W·m −1 ·K −1 , enabling highly efficient thermal localization. Vertically aligned microchannels ensure rapid water supply and salt reflux. Synergistically, the positively charged surface of the hydrophilic layer also induces a Donnan effect, significantly enhancing system salt resistance. Furthermore, this cationic evaporator concurrently achieves highly selective adsorption of anionic dyes (>97.8 % removal for MO/CR). Hydroxyl/amino functional groups enriched within the hydrophilic layer markedly reduce evaporation enthalpy by lowering the activation energy of water molecules. Under 1 kW m −2 solar irradiation, the evaporator achieves a water evaporation rate of 2.78 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and an energy conversion efficiency of 113.2 %. This study presents a novel strategy for efficient desalination and synergistic contaminant removal in complex aqueous environments.

Interfacial solar steam generation (ISSG) is severely limited by excessive salt accumulation and inefficient water movement. To overcome this, a hydratable skeleton is engineered through in-situ polymerization of polypyrrole (PPy) onto a NiMn-layered double hydroxide (LDH) for balanced water transport and effective salt-resistance without deterring the evaporation flux. The oxidation of Mn 2+ → Mn 3+ in the LDH matrix and shielding of PPy polymeric network (NiMn-LDH/PPy) endows stable, rapid hydration pathways for confined ion channels for salt rejection. The evaporator exhibits broadband light absorption (∼89 %), and achieves a high evaporation flux of 1.90 kg m −2 h −1 using seawater (3.5 wt%) under 1 kW m −2 solar intensity, maintained even after 20 cycles with greater flux retention. The hydratable skeleton's unique structure enables localized heat management (36.6 °C) and in-situ salt-ion dissociation (1.5 g NaCl completely rejected in 2 h), preventing crystallization. The structural optimization for effective heat mass transfer validates its structural stability under different humidity and environmental temperatures. The evaporation performance has been examined under natural conditions during different weather conditions, i.e., winter (1.76 kg m −2 h −1 ), and summer (1.82 kg m −2 h −1 ), in the same geographical location. This work provides a robust, process-engineered solution for durable solar desalination.

Continuous and efficient seawater evaporation is paramount for sustainable solar-powered freshwater production. However, current solar-powered desalination plants face challenges such as salt accumulation, oil spills, or marine fouling, resulting in operational issues like clogging and corrosion. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop a robust freshwater generation device capable of preventing multiple contaminations. In this paper, a novel multilayer structured composite polyurethane sponge (CDPU) consisting of a photothermal layer (PTPU), a salt and marine fouling-resistant layer (SDPU), and an oil–water separation layer (LPPU) was developed through a straightforward surface coating method. Initially, CDPU efficiently separates oil pollutants from seawater and reclaims spilled oil via the LPPU layer. Subsequent purification is facilitated by the exceptional anti-fouling properties of the SDPU layer, preparing the seawater for desalination via the photothermal layer. This integrated approach boosts the water evaporation rate to approximately 2.22 kg/m 2 ·h with a remarkable photothermal conversion efficiency of 91.9 %. Notably, the CDPU exhibits impeccable resistance (99.99 %) against E. coli and S. aureus and excellent resistance to diatom adhesion. In addition, when augmented with Fe 3 O 4 @OA@HCNT nanoparticles, the CDPU demonstrates exceptional prowess in separating and recovering oil spills from seawater. Thus, CDPU emerges as a promising candidate for solar-powered desalination.

Interfacial solar evaporation technology (ISET) holds significant promise for mitigating freshwater scarcity through solar-driven desalination. However, the advancement of solar evaporators that employ straightforward methods to enhance the evaporation rate (ER), improve salt resistance, and facilitate the collection of salt crystals poses a considerable challenge for ISET. In this study, we developed a photothermal material (PTM) named polypyrrole-polyester filter cotton (PPy-PFC), achieved by coating polypyrrole (PPy) onto polyester filter cotton (PFC) using a simple solution immersion technique. The PPy-PFC effectively reduces the enthalpy of water evaporation, resulting in an impressive ER of 2.44 kg m −2 h −1 under 1-solar intensity. The polyester fiber bundle (PFB) incorporates vertical water supply channels and acts as a water pump. When multiple PFBs are employed to deliver water to the PPy-PFC, it can consistently evaporate 20 wt% saltwater with an ER of 1.95 kg m −2 h −1 . This remarkable salt resistance performance is attributed to the ample water supply delivered by the multiple PFBs, which facilitates the diffusion backflow of salt ions. Additionally, by positioning a single PFB at the center of the PPy-PFC, a unidirectional saltwater-flowing evaporator is constructed. Crystallized salt forms around the single PFB with a radius of 1.5 cm, achieving zero liquid discharge (ZLD). This study presents a novel strategy for designing solar evaporators that improve ER by reducing the enthalpy of water evaporation, enhancing salt resistance through sufficient water supply, and enabling the collection of salt crystals via the establishment of a unidirectional saltwater-flowing channel.
