MXene has been widely used in hydrogels due to its high electrical conductivity and surface tunability. However, its self-stacking behavior hinders its further utilization. To address that, we proposed a nanoengineering strategy that used sulfonated polyurethane nanoparticles (PU) to modify MXene, aiming to improve its dispersibility in the hydrogel precursor solution via the hydrogen bonding interactions between the sulfonic acid groups of PU and the oxygen-containing groups of MXene, which not only avoid the self-stacking of MXene but also endow the prepared hydrogel with ultrathinness of 32 μm, great stretchability of 1834%, high toughness of 385.6 KJ/m3 as well as great puncture resistance, whose puncture displacement reached 85 mm at a thickness of 300 μm. Moreover, the hydrogel was also assembled as a strain sensor to monitor the human motions in real-time and recognize different hand gestures for human-machine interfaces. Furthermore, the hydrogel was capable of working as electrodes to assemble the trioelectric nanogenerators to power small devices for continuous energy supply. Overall, the developed ultrathin hydrogel fabricated via the nanoengineered MXene exhibited great potential in wearable electronics for flexible sensing, human-computer interaction, and self-powered devices.

Traditional hydrogels with poor mechanical properties have the largest barrier for extensive practical applications, such as artificial tendons, cartilage, skin and so on. In this work, a novel design strategy is proposed and demonstrated to improve the mechanical behavior of hydrogels by introducing ductile macromolecular microspheres (MMs) as crosslinking centers. Firstly, the MMs are synthesized, using butyl acrylate as the main component and dicyclopentyl acrylate as an intermolecular crosslinker, by a conventional emulsion polymerization method. Then acrylamide (AM) and hexadecyl methacrylate (HMA) are crosslinked by the MMs in water to form MM crosslinked poly(acrylamide-co-hexadecyl methacrylate) (P(AM/HMA)–MM) hydrogels. From the tensile measurements, the P(AM/HMA)–MM hydrogels exhibit dramatic enhancement of fracture stress σf (0.555 MPa) and fracture strain εf (5533%) when compared to the original P(AM/HMA) hydrogels. Furthermore, the P(AM/HMA)–MM hydrogels also have excellent puncture resistant properties. Based on traditional mechanisms of rubber-toughened plastics, it is clear that MMs can not only prevent the further development of cracks but can also be stretched to deform and absorb a large amount of energy. It is envisioned that this novel strategy, inspired by a toughening mechanism, will be an effective approach to enhance the mechanical properties and broaden the range of applications for hydrogels.

To solve the difficult recycling and poor durability of puncture-resistant soft composites, this study proposed a synergistic reinforcement of hydrogel/aramid composites by dual nanomicelle cross-linked networks using Pluronic F127DA, TiN, and TiO 2 nanoparticles. The TiN nanoparticles, a photothermal conversion material, were introduced into the gel system as toughening particles, and then they were synergized with the micellar state of Pluronic F127DA to form the core–shell structure nanomicelles, which provide more crosslink points and form a triple physical crosslink network with TiO 2 NPs. This synergistic reinforcement had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of the gel matrix (302.27 MJ toughness), self-repair ability (100% under near-infrared light for 5 min), and the amazing improvement of the puncture resistance of the composites (276.78 N cone puncture resistance value, 241.98 N knife puncture resistance value). This study provides an important reference for the design of soft composites with both efficient self-healing properties and high puncture resistance.

A multifunctional composite that can withstand puncture threats and endure extreme environmental conditions is pivotal for next-generation personal protective equipment (PPE). Herein, we report a flexible Kevlar-reinforced hydrogel composite that simultaneously exhibits outstanding puncture resistance, strain-sensing functionality, and anti-freezing performance. The PVA hydrogel matrix, structurally enhanced via immersion in Na 3 Cit and Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 dual-salt solution, demonstrates excellent mechanical robustness and strain-resistance responsiveness across both ambient and subzero environments. Integrated with Kevlar fabric, the flexible composite achieves a maximum quasi-static and dynamic puncture force of 69.55 N and 318.70 N, representing 4.07-fold and 3.09-fold improvements, respectively, over the neat fabric, and absorbs 94.58% of the impact energy from a drop hammer. Notably, the composite maintains superior puncture resistance (maximum quasi-static and dynamic puncture force of 55.97 N and 265.58 N) and flexibility (bending stiffness of 7.78 mN·cm) at -15 °C. Its strain-sensing capabilities remain sensitive and stable, offering excellent linearity, a broad detection range, and consistent performance over 500 cycles at both 25 °C and -15 °C, enabling real-time, reliable monitoring of human motion across diverse environmental conditions. This work offers a scalable and practical approach toward fabricating high-performance, all-weather flexible PPE for protective and wearable sensing applications in harsh environments.
