Proper matching of lubricants and modifiers: Another key factor for durable anti-icing performance of lubricated surfaces

Huiying Xiang,Li Cheng,Guoyong Liu,Tao Zhu,Xu Dai,Zheng Wei,Jiang Zhou,Ruijin Liao,Yuan Yuan

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) with anti-icing properties are challenged by the lubricant loss. Many strategies (such as structure optimization, lubricant improvement) are used to retain the lubricant in the porous structure. However, the matching of modifier and lubricant is rarely studied, which is another key factor for durable anti-icing performance of lubricated surfaces. Herein, proper matching of different lubricants and modifiers were investigated. Perfluoropolyether oil (PFPE) and silicone oil (SO) are chosen as lubricants. Linear alkane (OTS) and fluorinated alkane (FAS) are chosen as modifiers. A series of SLIPSs were prepared by infusing lubricants into unmodified and modified anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) surfaces. The suitable matches (OTS with SO, FAS with PFPE) make the prepared SLIPS have high water mobility and enable high affinity between the lubricant and modified AAO surface. The former contributes to improving the anti-icing performance in the simulated glaze icing test, and the latter is beneficial to improving the durability during the icing/deicing cycles. This work provides useful information to determine the suitable pairs of lubricant-modifier for durable anti-icing lubricated surfaces.

Iodine-Oxidized Diene-Based Rubbers as Anti-icing and Deicing Polymer Coatings

Bin Fu,Yingchao Ma,Ruiting Li,Xiaodong Lian,Shenglong Liao,Yapei Wang

In an effort to prevent or minimize icing hazards, techniques and materials for icing inhibition and deicing have always been highly favored throughout human history. This work discovers the integrated anti-icing and deicing effects of poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) triblock rubber (SBS) after its easy oxidation in iodine vapor. Iodine oxidation happens on the block of polybutadiene, featured by the conversion of SBS from hydrophobic to amphiphilic and the improved capability of photothermal conversion. The oxidized SBS can serve as a polymer coating, which possesses intriguing abilities to delay the kinetics of icing on its surface and repel the ice under light illumination. According to characterizations of surface chemistry and mechanical performance, iodine oxidation is assumed to involve the processes of iodine coordination to unsaturated bonds, the formation of radical cations as a result of the redox reaction between iodine and unsaturated carbon–carbon bonds, improved light absorption owing to the formation of polyiodide anions, and intermolecular coupling of radical cations. The appearance of polar moieties/species within the oxidized SBS is attributed to the delayed ice nucleation. The significant photothermal capacity in visible and near-infrared windows enables the iodine-oxidized SBS coating to remove the adhered ice by melting under light illumination when the icing process is inevitable, even at an extremely low temperature (−25 °C).

Highly transparent and robust slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces with anti-icing and anti-fouling performances

Meiling Zhang,Jing Yu,Rongrong Chen,Qi Liu,Jingyuan Liu,Dalei Song,Peili Liu,Liangtian Gao,Jun Wang

Recently, taking advantage of slippery liquid-infused surfaces (SLIPS) has been proposed as a simple passive ice removal method. However, the process of frost formation and ice freeze on SLIPS is accompanied by the lubricant migration from the structured substrate to the surface of frozen droplets which would lead to the sacrifice of lubricant. In this paper, highly transparent and robust slippery coatings were carried out by infusing lubricant into tube-like SiO 2 composite structure. The tubular material and a stack-hole composite structure contribute a lot to lock the lubricating oil, thus reducing the loss of lubricant during the icing/deicing cycles. The ultra-low ice adhesion strength (∼17 kPa) encourages the SLIPS to be a promising candidate for anti-icing applications. Moreover, capillary action within the unique structure as well endows SLIPS with the self-healing property. As a consequence, the as-prepared samples achieve long-term anti-icing stability while ensuring a glass substrate transmittance of up to 92.01%. In addition, surfaces maintain all the slippery characteristics after being directly exposed to running water for 30 min. Such good stability offers a possibility of applying SLIPS to everyday life.

Robust Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces with Fast Self-Replenishment Properties for Anticontaminant, Anti-Icing, and Anticorrosion Applications on Magnesium Alloys

Bingfeng Li,Kefan Huang,Shuaiya Xue,Weimin Liu,Jian Li

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs), a class of functional bioinspired surface, have earned a position at the forefront of many areas such as anticorrosion, anti-icing, antifogging, antibacterial, anticontaminant, microflow control, and drag reduction. However, the fast self-replenishing ability of SLIPS remains extremely challenging due to limited lubricant storage capacity or microstructure impeding fluid flow. Herein, a superhydrophobic surface was prepared by spraying the sepiolite/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 hybrid material with a layered three-dimensional (3D) fibrous porous network structure on the magnesium (Mg) alloy surface. Subsequently, SLIPS with fast self-replenishing properties was obtained by injecting silicone oil on the superhydrophobic surface. The unique internal structure of SLIPS not only served as a container for storing the lubricant but also provided a channel for the flow of lubricants. In addition, the SLIPS possessed favorable self-replenishment, anticontaminant, and anti-icing properties. Moreover, compared with the superhydrophobic surface, SLIPS exhibited better corrosion resistance, which was attributed to the stable continuous lubricating oil replacing the air trapped in the rough structure and effectively blocking the invasion of corrosive ions. Significantly, the as-prepared SLIPS still maintained excellent corrosion stability on the Mg alloy after soaking in 3.5 wt % NaCl solution for 30 days. The research provides an avenue for designing green environmental protection, sustainable anticorrosion, and rapidly self-replenishing SLIPSs with great application potential.

Fabrication of PDMS/FA superhydrophobic coatings and its self-cleaning and anti-icing performance

Weitao Song,Huiping Song,Shirui Zhang,Zhenlian Fan,Fangqin Cheng

Superhydrophobic coatings have garnered immense attention in recent years. Nevertheless, the creation of superhydrophobic coatings is often associated with high production costs and comparatively intricate fabrication processes. In this paper, we utilize cheap and easily available ultrafine fly ash(FA) as the main raw material to replace the expensive filler substances traditionally used for constructing rough structures, and Polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) as a low surface energy modification to construct FA-based superhydrophobic coatings by a simple spraying method. The PDMS/FA coating surface exhibits a water contact angle(WCA) of 157.65°and a water sliding angle(WSA) of 2.00° The irregular morphology of the FA is conducive to forming a rough texture on the coating surface, which captures more air, leading to the formation of a stable air layer. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations provide an insight into the anti-wetting mechanism of the superhydrophobic surface through an analysis of energetic and dynamic properties. PDMS/FA coatings remain superhydrophobic at 150 °C, in UV, and in varying pH environments. In addition, PDMS/FA coatings offer excellent mechanical, self-cleaning and anti-icing properties. This innovative approach to superhydrophobic coating, utilizing solid waste material as a basic material, demonstrates potential applicative value in fields such as self-cleaning and anti-icing.

Construction of MOF-based superhydrophobic composite coating with excellent abrasion resistance and durability for self-cleaning, corrosion resistance, anti-icing, and loading-increasing research

Huaiyin Chen,Fangfang Wang,Huizhou Fan,Ruoyu Hong,Weihua Li

A superhydrophobic composite coating was facilely constructed based on MOF (ZIF-8) nanoparticles and organic resin. Hydrophilic ZIF-8 nanoparticles with hydroxyl group were firstly prepared in aqueous media at room temperature, and then modified with low surface energy perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (POTS) through hydrolytic condensation to give a superhydrophobic paint. Additionally, epoxy resin (EP) was innovatively introduced as adhesive layer to improve the robustness and adhesive force of the superhydrophobic coating. The as-prepared ZIF-8/POTS/EP composite coating showed high water-repellency (water contact angle = 168.2°), mechanical and chemical robustness, and durability that it could maintain the superhydrophobicity after weathering in air for 300 days or immersing in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution for 60 days. The superhydrophobic composite coating also possessed excellent performance in self-cleaning, corrosion resistance, anti-icing and loading-increasing. Noteworthily, for the corrosion resistance, the ZIF-8/POTS/EP coating could increase the impedance modulus (at 0.01 Hz) of Q235 steel by about 7 orders of magnitude after immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl aqueous solution for 7 days. We believe that this work can not only promote the effortless and large-scale preparation of superhydrophobic surface and their practical applications in future, but also provide a novel way for applying MOF materials into more fields.

A hydrophobic electroless copper-nickel fabric with dual drive energy conversion for all-weather anti-icing/icephobic and deicing

Guolong Li,Xi Wang,Fengcai Zhang,Liang Yin,Di Zhang,Kaiying Zhao,Zhibin Zhang,Xiaoming Qian,Yaming Jiang,Songnan Zhang

Ice can lead to inconvenience and disasters in human activities, making it a widely concern for researchers to find solutions to prevent icing. Hydrophobic materials have been developed for passive anti-icing with a long time, but without active deicing effect. Recently, researchers have explored hydrophobic photothermal materials with passive anti-icing and active deicing ability, which are limited on cloudy days and the night. Consequently, developing materials with anti-icing/icephobic and deicing capabilities for all-weather use has emerged as an innovative strategy. This paper develops hydrophobic PDMS/Cu-Ni@PET with photo/electric thermal properties to support all-weather anti-icing/icephobic and deicing, which is synthesized using copper-nickel and hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The PDMS/Cu-Ni@PET exhibits an outstanding anti-icing performance with a delayed icing time of 1224 s at -10 °C, and achieves a surface equilibrium temperature of 68.9 °C under 1 sunlight intensity, enabling the melting of surface ice particles within 614 ± 118 s. When a voltage is applied to both sides of the fabric, the equilibrium temperature can be reached within 60 s, and attained 158 °C at 6 V, enabling the melting of surface ice within 97 s. It provides a novel approach for developing photo/electric thermal superhydrophobic coatings that can maintain all-weather deicing performance.

Development of a Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Based Superhydrophobic Surface with Abrasion Resistance, Corrosion Protection, and Anti-icing

Dan Zhang,Yue Zhao,Qi He,Zengxi Pan,Guohong Ma

Herein, a superhydrophobic surface was designed and fabricated based on the “lotus effect” construction mechanism. The zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-90) micro-nanoparticles were initially synthesized via a one-pot method, combined with long-chain stearic acid (STA), and subsequently embedded in polyvinyl butyral (PVB) to form a superhydrophobic surface at room temperature. The superhydrophobic surface demonstrated mechanical stability and retained its superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle (CA) greater than 150°, even at a wear distance of 400 cm. The composite coating formed by applying this superhydrophobic surface to magnesium (Mg) alloy exhibited a high corrosion potential (Ecorr = −0.86 V) and a low corrosion current density (icorr = 3.66 × 10–12 A·cm–2) compared to the uncoated Mg substrate (Ecorr = −1.53 V, icorr = 1.14 × 10–4 A·cm–2), indicating that the coating effectively enhances the corrosion resistance of the substrate. Notably, the superhydrophobic composite coating demonstrated corrosion resistance durability with a high charge transfer resistance (Rct = 5.12 × 109 Ω·cm2) after 5 days of immersion in 3.5 wt % NaCl aqueous solution. In addition, the as-prepared superhydrophobic surface also displayed excellent performance in self-cleaning and anti-icing. We believe that this work can facilitate the application of ZIFs on superhydrophobic surfaces and provide a new approach for metal corrosion protection.

Bilayer coating fabricated on aluminum alloy substrates with superamphiphobicity, corrosion resistance, self-cleaning, and delayed icing properties

Binbin Zhang,Xu Liu,Tianrong Zhan,Baorong Hou

To address the functional failure caused by low-surface-tension liquid wetting and adhesion in superhydrophobic materials, in this study, we constructed a bilayer coating with superamphiphobic properties using an epoxy (Ep) bonding layer and an organosilane-grafted attapulgite (OG-ATP) layer through spray-coating technique. The prepared superamphiphobic bilayer coating exhibited high contact angles (CAs) and low sliding angles (SAs) for cold water (25 °C), hot water (85 °C), glycerol, ethylene glycol, peanut oil, and even n-hexadecane (CA = 150.4 ± 0.3° and SA = 7 ± 2°) with surface tension of 27.5 mN m −1 . Surface morphology and elemental analysis confirmed the coating's unique micro-nano hierarchical structure and low surface energy characteristics. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results showed that the surface charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) and low-frequency modulus (|Z| 0.01Hz ) were enhanced by 6–7 orders of magnitude compared to the bare aluminum alloy substrate. The anti-corrosion performance remained stable even after 5 days of 3.5 wt% NaCl immersion. Additionally, icing experiments with water droplets at −10 °C and −15 °C revealed a significant delay in ice formation on the substrate protected by the bilayer coating. The development of this protective material, combining superamphiphobicity, self-cleaning, corrosion resistance, and anti-icing functions, will provide advanced technological reserves in areas such as marine, aviation, transportation, and manufacturing.

A fluorine-free bioinspired multifunctional slippery coating for ultra-long-term anticorrosion of Mg alloy, static/dynamic anti-icing, antibacterial and antifouling

Wenliang Zhang,Shuyi Li,Dongsong Wei,Yafei Shi,Ting Lu,Zhen Zhang,Zhiwu Han,Yan Liu

Poor corrosion resistance limits the application of Mg alloy and it is meaningful to explore a surface coating technology for ultra-long-term corrosion protection of Mg alloy. Superhydrophobic surface (SHS) and smooth liquid-injected porous surface (SLIPS) have shown important application value in the field of Mg alloy corrosion protection. However, the unstable special interface of air layer or lubricant cannot act as stable corrosion barrier for the long term. Inspired by frog skin, a bionic fluorine-free multifunctional slippery coating (MSC) is prepared by one-step spraying a mixture of epoxy resin, silicone oil, modified nano TiO 2 and modified micron mica powder. MSC exhibits a microstructure similar to frog skin, excellent slippery (sliding angle ∼ 3°) and strong lubricant retention. Different from anticorrosion mechanism of SHS and SLIPS by their special interface, MSC, storing silicone oil on the surface and inside the coating, demonstrates ultra-long-term anticorrosion to Mg alloy (both neutral salt spray and 3.5 wt% NaCl solution immersion for 60 days) due to excellent barrier effect throughout coating, and the scratch defect area of MSC is not significantly eroded after 14 days of salt spray. Moreover, MSC exhibits excellent static/dynamic anti-icing ability and low ice adhesion in a −20℃ environment, outstanding adhesion (level 4B), high hardness (3H), antibacterial (>94 %), antifouling, chemical stability and resistance to boiling water, ice water and UV radiation. All these excellent properties can promote the application of Mg alloy in a wider range of fields.

Fabrication of slippery Zn surface with improved water-impellent, condensation and anti-icing properties

Hu Luo,Shaohui Yin,Shuai Huang,Fengjun Chen,Qingchun Tang,Xiaojie Li

Zinc and its alloys are valuable crucial materials applied in the fields of automobile, ship manufacturing and construction industries. However, their application is limited due to poor performance on water-resistance, condensation and anti-icing property. Slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has been widely used owing to excellent water-repellent, condensation and anti-icing properties. In this work, a SLIPS was fabricated based on zinc substrate by using electrochemical etching, low surface energy modification and lubricant infusion, successively. According to the SEM morphologies and EDS images, it could be confirmed that the rough porous surface structure, low surface energy modification and infused lubricants are key factors accounting for the excellent anti-wetting property of fabricated slippery Zn surface. The experimental results showed that the SLIPS on zinc substrate exhibited outstanding water-repellent performance at a wide range of temperature and drop impact velocity. Moreover, its anti-wetting ability can be sustained even under the impacts of droplets or the continuous water jet. Owing to its dropwise condensation strategy, the SLIPS shows reasonable water collection efficiency, which exceeds 60 mg/(cm 2 ·h) at relative humidity of 90%. The excellent anti-icing property is demonstrated by the simulated ice rain test and deicing force test. And the results showed that only tiny residue ice left on the SLIPS and the deicing force was 2–3 times smaller than ordinary surface. The prepared SLIPS is expected to be an adaptable and efficient method for enhancing the water-repellent, condensation and anti-icing properties of zinc substrate, and may expand the application in energy-efficient fluid handing & transportation, medicine and anti-fouling operating in low temperature environment.

Superamphiphobic triple-scale micro-/nanostructured aluminum surfaces with self-cleaning and anti-icing properties

Chen Tianchi,Guo Jie,Zhang Yingying,Hu Ningning,Zhang Jialu

Due to the construction of complicated micro-/nanohierarchical structures, designing durable superamphiphobic Al surfaces by a simple, environmentally friendly, and fast method remains a great challenge. In this article, we used a simple and environmentally friendly technique that includes laser marking and water boiling treatment to create triple-scale micro-/nanostructures on 1060 Al surfaces. The as-prepared 1060 Al surfaces revealed excellent superamphiphobicity with low sliding angles, owing to great Cassie state stability after 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (FAS-17) modification. The contact angle of the water droplets reaches 160°, and that of peanut oil droplets reaches 155° on this surface. Meanwhile, this superamphiphobic Al surface also possesses excellent self-cleaning ability and oil resistance. Even when entirely immersed in oil sludge, the as-prepared Al surfaces can retain superamphiphobicity. Furthermore, the as-prepared superamphiphobic Al surface demonstrates outstanding chemical stability and endurance in a variety of application environments. In addition, the as-prepared superamphiphobic Al surface offers potential anti-icing and anti-frosting properties. Therefore, the as-prepared superamphiphobic Al surface will be a potential candidate with broad applications in aerospace, construction, and marine industries. Graphical abstract
