Addressing the blockage issues arising from hydrate formation and aggregation in complex multiphase systems has long been a significant focus in the field of flow assurance for oil and gas pipelines. There is an urgent need to develop and identify cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally friendly hydrate anti-agglomerants. A micro-mechanical force device and a rheometer were employed to investigate the anti-agglomeration effects of Span80 and amide-based surfactants (DPLA and DPCA) in gas–water and oil–water systems. The results indicated that in the gas–water system, compared to the surfactant-free system, the addition of varying concentrations of surfactants lead to a reduction in cohesive force of hydrate particles by 70.39 % to 84.10 % (1 wt% Span 80). The amide-based surfactant, DPLA, reaches a maximum reduction of 82.38 % (from 21.51 ± 0.78 mN/m to 3.79 ± 0.29 mN/m) with a concentration of 0.5 wt%. The cohesive force between hydrate particles and wall droplets was reduced by 40.35 % to 54.59 %, with the maximum reduction of 54.59 % (from 484.28 ± 26.28 mN/m to 219.88 ± 21.36 mN/m at 0.3 wt% DPCA). Compared to Span80, amide-based surfactants demonstrated similarly excellent performance in reducing cohesive forces. Considering the significant changes in the surface morphology of hydrate particles upon the addition of surfactants, this study also revealed a strong positive correlation between both liquid bridge width and circularity with cohesive force (r 1 = 0.8233, r 2 = 0.6066), while surface roughness exhibited a weak negative correlation (r 3 = − 0.3821). In the oil–water system, although the critical time for hydrate formation in DPLA or DPCA-containing emulsions was markedly shortened compared to the base emulsion, both peak viscosity and steady viscosity of hydrate slurries were significantly reduced at medium to high concentrations of DPLA or DPCA. The maximum reductions in steady viscosity and peak viscosity for the DPLA-containing system were 93.94 % (0.6 wt%) and 78.59 % (0.4 wt%), respectively, while for the DPCA system, they were 89.55 % (0.8 wt%) and 55.95 % (0.8 wt%). Although DPCA and DPLA promoted hydrate formation, they still demonstrated excellent anti-agglomeration efficacy and potential for synergistic effects. The anti-agglomeration capability of DPCA was slightly weaker than that of DPLA, with both exhibiting comparable effects at medium to high concentrations.

Hydrate control has raised great interest as it plays a crucial role for the flow assurance in oil and gas industry. In this work, the effect of silica nanoparticles to two antiagglomerants, Span 80 and cocamidopropyl dimethylamine, for hydrate formation and agglomeration was investigated by using high pressure stirring cell. At higher hydrate volume fraction (≥12%) during the hydrate formation process, the abnormal reduction of hydrate volume fraction was detected, which may be local dissociation of hydrate by the frictional heat accompanied by the heterogeneous temperature distribution in the cell. For the system without AAs, the relative current curve exhibited the upward kinks due to the ongoing hydrate agglomeration, whereas downward kinks were observed in systems with hydrate AAs. It is suggested that the downward kinks in the relative current curves could be used as one of the signs for effective hydrate AAs in the partial dissociation system. An addition of 0.75 wt % hydrophobic silica nanoparticles to 0.5 wt % Span 80 system shows an equivalent antiagglomeration performance of 2 wt % Span 80. The nanoparticles could hinder the nucleation process, and the induction time can be prolonged by ∼6.4 h with the addition of 0.5 wt % hydrophobic nanoparticles. For another AA, cocamidopropyl dimethylamine, the effective concentration of silica nanoparticles could be significantly reduced to 0.1 wt % at the higher hydrate volume fraction (∼30%). The new formulation was also found with kinetic inhibition effect, and the induction time can be prolonged to ∼2.9 h with the addition of 0.1 wt % nanoparticles. The silica nanoparticle at the favorable low concentration exhibited great potential as an efficient synergist to hydrate AAs in oil–gas–water cotransportation system.

This paper aimed to construct kafirin-chitosan complex particles through the anti-solvent co-precipitation method and explore its potential as a Pickering emulsifier. The results showed that the contact angle of prepared kafirin-chitosan particles was close to 90° and the zeta potential exceeded 50 mV at the mass ratio of 8:1. The highly charged kafirin-chitosan particles with good wettability could effectively adsorb at the oil/water interface. The droplet size of the Pickering emulsion decreased with the increase of kafirin-chitosan particle concentration. When the particle concentration was 2.0 wt% and the oil fraction was 70%, the droplet size of the Pickering emulsion was about 12.4 ± 0.8 μm. Such a small droplet size could increase the droplet-droplet interaction, thus endowing Pickering emulsion with good viscoelasticity. The microstructures indicated that the kafirin-chitosan particles thoroughly covered the polygonal oil droplets, which was conducive to improving the interface film strength of the Pickering emulsion. Consequently, the prepared Pickering emulsion had excellent rheological properties and anti-coalescence stability. The Pickering emulsion at low pH and ionic strength had good stability after 42 days of storage. Therefore, this present research provided a practical strategy to fabricate edible Pickering emulsions with good texture and stability.

The development of efficient and environmentally friendly hydrate inhibitors is crucial for advancing methane hydrate exploitation. However, existing inhibitors often suffer from poor biodegradability, low inhibition efficiency, and short action duration, limiting their practical application. In this study, a copolymer of L-aspartic acid and N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP-ASP) was synthesized and evaluated as a novel kinetic hydrate inhibitor. Experimental results show that NVP-ASP extends the induction time by 66.55 % and reduces the hydrate formation efficiency by 7.98 % compared to the commercial inhibitor polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). Molecular simulations further elucidate its multi-stage inhibition mechanism. During nucleation, NVP-ASP effectively restricts the mobility of surrounding water and methane molecules, with an average of 13.13 water and 13.45 methane molecules adsorbed within 5 Å. During the growth stage, NVP-ASP exhibits strong anti-agglomeration behavior, significantly suppressing the formation of hydrate cages. The growth rates for simple (5 12 ) and complex (5 12 6 2 ) cages are reduced to 61.54 % and 50 %, respectively, much lower than the corresponding values for PVP (166.67 % and 233.33 %). Moreover, NVP-ASP shows low inclusion tendency into forming hydrate cages, resulting in prolonged inhibition. These findings provide mechanistic insights into hydrate formation and offer a promising strategy for designing high-performance kinetic inhibitors.
