Anti-Swelling, Self-Adhesive, and Conductive Hydrogel for Amphibious Strain Sensors

Na Wang,Rongli Zhang,Hanyu Ren,Jiangchu Gerong,Chunhui Luo

Hydrogel-based amphibious sensors have drawn much attention but have faced challenges like obvious swelling, decline in conductivity and sensing performances, and poor adhesion when immersed in water. To address these challenges, conductive hydrogels with swelling resistance, strong adhesion, and long-term stability were developed. Firstly, an anti-swelling and conductive matrix was constructed by using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) through freezing–thawing repeats and immersion strategies. Subsequently, a gelatin-tannic acid adhesive layer was coated on the bottom to achieve the Janus structure. Even after immersing in water for 28 days, this hydrogel still showed excellent swelling resistance (with a swelling ratio of 1.8%, a tensile stress of 227 kPa, an elongation at break of 223%, an electrical conductivity of 3.2 S/m, and a gauge factor of 1.2). In addition, the J-PSC hydrogel exhibited strong adhesion to various materials (wood, iron, glass, plastic, and skin) both in air and underwater. Therefore, an amphibious strain sensor based on this Janus hydrogel was obtained, which could enable underwater communications through Morse code. This work provides new insights into the fabrication of conductive hydrogels, holding great promise for a broad range of applications like wearable sensors, bioelectrodes, and soft robotics in aquatic environments.

Assembly of multidimensional MXene-carbon nanotube ultrathin membranes with an enhanced anti-swelling property for water purification

Yuqing Sun,Dean Xu,Shilong Li,Lele Cui,Yongxiang Zhuang,Weihong Xing,Wenheng Jing

Severe stacking and swelling properties are critical issues in two-dimensional (2D) lamellar membrane fabrication and separation processes that can result in low flux and poor rejection. Herein, we propose the assembly of multidimensional MXene-carbon nanotube (CNT) ultrathin membranes by loading a MXene intercalated with CNTs onto a tubular ceramic membrane . Benefiting from the modes of van der Waals interactions (hydrogen bond) and repulsion forces between the MXene and functionalized CNTs, the one-dimensional (1D) CNTs are well dispersed and intercalated into the 2D MXene nanosheets , forming a uniform network and continuous three-dimensional (3D) labyrinthine short mass transfer channels, which can considerably improve the permeability and rejection performance of the membranes. Furthermore, the membranes exhibit a distinct suppressed swelling property via a facile thermal crosslinking process (-OH + -OH = -O- + H 2 O and -COOH + -OH = -COO + H 2 O), accompanied by the formation of new chemical bonds (Ti-O-C and Ti-COO-C) due to dehydroxylation between the neighboring MXene nanosheets and CNTs. Additionally, 50 h long-term operation studies also indicate the promising anti-swelling property and stability of the MXene-CNT membranes. This multidimensional (1D and 2D) assembly and thermal crosslinking strategy represents a new avenue for the facile and scalable development of MXene-based and other 2D material-derived high-performance membranes for water purification .

Polyetheramine as swelling-inhibitor for expansive soil: Performance and mechanism

Haixiang Hu,Yu Qiu,Zheng Lu,Chuxuan Tang,Hailin Yao,Ming Cheng

The logical coherence macro–micro experiments about the anti-swelling performance of polyetheramine-230 (PEA-230) on expansive natural soil are presented in this paper. Further, the expansion of the soil in the solution and water system is considered. Great significance in treating the expansive soil broadens the applied range of polyetheramine-230. The mechanism is assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) in the state of wet and dry montmorillonite (Mt), XRD of dry clay extracts from the soil, zeta potential measurement, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results prove the significant effect of controlling the expansion of expansive soil. PEA-230 strongly adsorbs on the surface of soil particles and intercalates into the layer structure. Further, the PEA-230/soil hybrids can be judged as usable engineering soil with low expansion characteristics. Additionally, the concentration of PEA-230 controls the treatment effect, and 1 wt% PEA-230 is a proper concentration to treat the expansive soil. In particular, PEA-230 has excellent characteristics such as small molecular weight, good water solubility, and good stability. Thus PEA-230 can be regarded as a great agent to treat in-situ expansive soil.

A robust and adhesive anti-swelling hydrophobic ionogel with prolonged stability for strain and temperature sensors

Yu Zhang,Yuanna Sun,Jiahang Yang,Ruobing Tian,Jiahao Liu,Xueming Tang,Junbo Wang,Qingshan Li

With the growing attention given to wearable electronic devices, flexible sensors, as a fundamental component, are emerging as the focal point. However, achieving long-term stability and precise sensing underwater remain two significant challenges that urgently need to be addressed for these sensors. By employing a fully hydrophobic structure, this work achieves a significant breakthrough in underwater applications. The hydrophobic design imparts the ionogel with exceptional water resistance, strong wet adhesion, and remarkable stability in underwater environments. These remarkable advantages make ionogels stand out as strain sensors. The ionogels exhibit extraordinary signal sensing abilities. Specifically, they can capture subtle physiological activities of the human body with precision and sensitivity, both in air or underwater. Besides, the satisfactory thermosensitivity (−2.02% °C−1), high resolution (0.1 °C) and fast response (14 s) ensure that the ionogel becomes a qualified temperature sensor. By integrating with a wireless Bluetooth transmission system, the real-time body temperature can be monitored using a smart cellphone. This work demonstrates the great potential of ionogels in marine exploitation and wearable health monitoring.

Water-Induced Phase Separation for Anti-Swelling Hydrogel Adhesives in Underwater Soft Electronics

Min Li,Honglang Lu,Menghan Pi,Hui Zhou,Yufei Wang,Bin Yan,Wei Cui,Rong Ran

The development of hydrogel-based underwater electronics has gained significant attention due to their flexibility and portability compared to conventional rigid devices. However, common hydrogels face challenges such as swelling and poor underwater adhesion, limiting their practicality in water environments. Here, a water-induced phase separation strategy to fabricate hydrogels with enhanced anti-swelling properties and underwater adhesion is presented. By leveraging the contrasting affinity of different polymer chains to water, a phase-separated structure with rich hydrophobic and dilute hydrophilic polymer phases is achieved. This dual-phase structure, meticulously characterized from the macroscopic to the nanoscale, confers the hydrogel network with augmented retractive elastic forces and facilitates efficient water drainage at the gel-substrate interface. As a result, the hydrogel exhibits remarkable swelling resistance and long-lasting adhesion to diverse substrates. Additionally, the integration of carboxylic multiwalled carbon nanotubes into the hydrogel system preserves its anti-swelling and adhesion properties while imparting superior conductivity. The conductive phase-separated hydrogel exhibited great potential in diverse underwater applications, including sensing, communication, and energy harvesting. This study elucidates a facile strategy for designing anti-swelling underwater adhesives by leveraging the ambient solvent effect, which is expected to offer some insights for the development of next-generation adhesive soft materials tailored for aqueous environments.

A gelatin-based ionogel with anti-swelling properties for underwater human physiological signal detection

Xin Guan,Mengliang Bi,Shengyu Sun,Yongqi Yang,Jian Sun,Zhaohui Jin,Hailun Ren,Zijian Gao

A hydrogel is an ideal matrix material for flexible electronic devices, electronic skin and health detection devices due to its outstanding flexibility and stretchability. However, hydrogel-based flexible electronic devices swell once they are placed in a high humidity or underwater environment. The swelling behavior could damage the internal structure of hydrogels, ultimately leading to the reduction or complete loss of mechanical properties, electrical conductivity and sensing function. In order to resolve the above problems, a double network ionogel with remarkable anti-swelling behavior, stretchability and conductive properties was prepared. The ionogel consisted of gelatin (G) and copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), butyl acrylate (BA), dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate maleate (D) and N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBAA). Due to the dense crosslinking network and hydrophobic interaction, the ionogel exhibited remarkable anti-swelling properties (7.64% of the 30-day equilibrium swelling ratio in deionized water). D and MBAA were simultaneously introduced into the ionogel system as cross-linking agents to provide a large number of cross-linking points, improving the cross-linking density of the ionogel. Importantly, the introduction of D avoided ionic leakage by free radical copolymerization. Furthermore, the ionogel maintained stable mechanical properties and conductivity after being submerged in deionized water owing to remarkable anti-swelling performance. The mechanical properties of the ionogel retained 89.75% of the initial mechanical properties after a 5-day immersion in deionized water. Therefore, this ionogel could be employed as an underwater flexible wearable sensor for high humidity or underwater motion monitoring.

Durable hydrogel-based lubricated composite coating with remarkable underwater performances

Jiawei Zhang,Yingxin Guan,Qin Zhang,Tianyu Wang,Ming Wang,Zhixin Zhang,Yang Gao,Guanghui Gao

Hypothesis Hydrogel coatings have received great attention in the field of such as medical devices , water treatment membranes, flexible electronics, and marine antifouling. However, when it comes to lubrication of hydrogel materials, though it has great potential applications in the field of industrial and medical drag reduction, some restrained properties are urgently needed to overcome for releasing the practical potential. Experiments Durability of high lubrication was revealed from the sliding test during the long-term storage, as well as the long-distance sliding. Some variables which possibly affect the lubrication performance were examined to demonstrate that excellent lubricity of the coating would not be easily influenced by load, frequency, friction pair and temperature. The microstructure and mechanical characterization of the lubricative coating indicate that the resistance to harsh running conditions is premised on enough hydration extent and robustness. The formulae of Possion ratio and ball-on-disk contact stress which apply to soft matter were used for calculating contact stress values in tribology tests. Anti-swelling and bio-compatibility are also verified. Findings This work found a route of achieving superior lubrication and coexisting with stability in lubrication, which can be used for drag reduction in medical devices and shipbuilding industry.

Armor Strategy Enables High Temperature Anti-swelling Performance of 2D Material Based Membranes by Pre-protonation

Yi-Wei Li,Xinyu Ai,Ruixiang Guo,Yeming Zhai,Kai-Ge Zhou

Swelling significantly limits the performance and practical applications of two-dimensional (2D) membranes in aqueous environments. Here, we present an innovative "armor strategy" to enhance the anti-swelling performance of negatively charged 2D membranes, using vermiculite membranes (VM) as a model system. By spin-coating polyethyleneimine (PEI) onto the membrane surface and cross-linking with trimesoyl chloride (TMC), a robust protective layer was formed. The resulting VM-PEI-TMC membrane (VPTM) exhibits remarkable swelling resistance, with a swelling rate of only 0.83%, compared to 23.70% for unmodified VM. Practical applications of VPTM in ion sieving, dye rejection, and high-temperature operations demonstrated stable performance, with rejection rates of methylene blue (MB), rhodamine B (RB), and potassium ferricyanide (PF) exceeding 95% at 80°C. Furthermore, the universality of the armor strategy was established by applying it to graphene oxide membranes (GM), achieving a swelling rate reduction from 55.93% to 5.02%. These results highlight the versatility and effectiveness of the armor strategy, providing a promising pathway for developing high-performance, anti-swelling 2D membranes for environmental and energy applications.

Skin-inspired MXene-based polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin organic hydrogel with good anti-drying, anti-swelling properties and high sensitivity

Yuwei Chen,Wenyan Guo,Nayu Chen,Ying Liu,Xuan Wan,Tianyu Wang,Zhehao Zhou,Yuan Jin,Guangli Li

Hydrogel-based flexible sensors have recently attracted considerable attention in the field of wearable soft electronics. However, hydrogel-based flexible devices often fail to operate underwater because of their poor stability during swelling. Moreover, it is difficult for conventional conductive hydrogels to simultaneously achieve the desirable mechanical properties, high electrical conductivity, and satisfactory sensitivity to multiple stimuli. To implement a hydrogel-based sensor with high long-term stability, swelling resistance, and multifunctional capability, a fully physically crosslinked MXene-supported polyvinyl alcohol/gelatin dual-network organic hydrogel enhanced by tannic acid (PGTM) was proposed in this study. The unique properties of this hydrogel were inspired by the human skin structure and well-dispersed MXene nanosheets, which endow it with a wide strain range (0.01–400 %), high electrical conductivity (1.4 S m −1 ), and high sensitivity (gauge factor: 3.15). In addition, PGTM exhibited good biocompatibility, moisturizing, anti-swelling, self-recovery properties, and relative low contact impedance (17.18 ± 0.93 kΩ at 10 Hz), which enable its electronic skin applications with the ability to detect various electrophysiological signals and monitor human movements underwater. The proposed organic hydrogel can be potentially used in human-machine interactions for multi-application scenarios and personalized multi-signal monitoring.

Exploration of Optimal Reaction Conditions for Constructing Hydrophobic Polymers with Low Deformation to Facilitate the Dimensional Stability of Laminated Bamboo Lumber

Jianchao Zhou,Li Jin,Xinxing Wu,Hui Wang,Shuaibo Han,Yan Zhang,Fangli Sun

The environmental moisture changes would result in the deformation and cracking of laminated bamboo lumber (LBL) easily due to the unreleased internal stress, leading to poor durability. In this study, a hydrophobic cross-linking polymer with low deformation was successfully fabricated and introduced in the LBL by polymerization and esterification to improve its dimensional stability. In an aqueous solution, the 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and Maleic anhydride (MAh) were employed as the base compounds for synthesizing the copolymer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate and maleic acid (PHM). The hydrophobicity and swelling performance of the PHM was adjusted by controlling the reaction temperatures. PHM-modified LBL’s hydrophobicity as indicated by the contact angle, increased from 58.5° to 115.2°. The anti-swelling efficiency was also improved. Moreover, multiple characterizations were applied to clarify the structure of PHM and its bonding linkages in LBL. This study demonstrates an efficient avenue to facilitate the dimensional stability of LBL by PHM modification and sheds new light on the efficient utilization of LBL using a hydrophobic polymer with low deformation. Keywords:laminated bamboo lumber;hydrophobic polymer;dimension stability;anti-swelling

An Anti-Swellable Hydrogel Strain Sensor for Underwater Motion Detection

Jiayuan Ren,Yanhui Liu,Zengqiang Wang,Siqi Chen,Yifan Ma,Hua Wei,Shaoyu Lü

Hydrogel-based wearable electronic devices have received increasing attention. However, the construction of underwater strain sensors remains a significant challenge because of the swelling of hydrogels in an aquatic environment. This work presents the fabrication of an anti-swellable hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), a copolymer of [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Interestingly, facile switch of the SBMA moiety from neutral to positively charged status at a low pH value leads to reduced osmotic pressure of the hydrogel for electrostatic repulsion-driven elimination of water molecules and anti-swelling. The resulting anti-swellable hydrogel exhibits high toughness (518 kJ m −3 ) and compressive modulus (8.12 Mpa), ionic conductivity (up to 4.58 S m −1 ), and anti-swelling behavior (equilibrium swelling ratio of 9% in water for 30 days). An underwater strain sensor based on this anti-swellable hydrogel is further developed to monitor the movements of underwater sports. High sensitivity is achieved to identify multidirectional motions, including raising the head, swinging the arm, bending the elbow, knee and finger. Therefore, this study offers a facile strategy to generate hydrogel-based sensors that can be adopted in an underwater environment as well as expands the potential applications of wearable electronic devices.
