In order to obtain a safe and biodegradable material with antimicrobial properties from cellulose for food packaging, we presented a facile way to graft chitosan onto the oxidized cellulose films. The obtained films had a high transparent property of above 80% transmittance, excellent barrier properties against oxygen and antimicrobial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The antimicrobial properties, mechanical properties, and water vapor permeability of composites are essential characteristics in determining their applicability as food-packaging materials. Moreover, using a sausage model, it was shown that the composites exhibited better performance than traditional polyethylene packaging material and demonstrated good potential as food packaging materials. The results presented a new insight into the development of green materials for food packaging.

In order to extend the antibacterial time of quaternary phosphonium salt in bacteria, palygorskite (PGS) is used as the carrier of dodecyl triphenyl phosphonium bromide (DTP), and a DTP-PGS hybrid is prepared. Antibacterial performance of this novel hybrid is investigated for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The results show that the DTP could be absorbed on the surface of PGS which had bacteria-adsorbed capability. The DTP-PGS hybrid, combining the advantages of PGS and DTP, display specific-targeting capability, long-term antibacterial activity, and lower cytotoxicity, suggesting the great potential application as PGS-based antibacterial powder.

Wearable electronics with multifunction and convenience are entering a period of rapid development. However, the longer people wear electronic devices, the easier it is for bacteria to infect the skin. Sterilization of wearables has received little research, partly because mature high-voltage sterilization systems require energy sources, which will greatly restrict the large-scale applications of wearable devices. Therefore, a self-powered sterilization system with high comfort and safety is strongly appealing. To solve the above problem, we design a wearable, self-powered sterilization system with a biocompatible nano/microporous fiber triboelectric nanogenerator (NMF-TENG) as the energy source and an interdigital electrode for better bactericidal performance. Ag nanowires (AgNWs) and carbon nanotube (CNT) are added to the indium tin oxide (ITO)-based interdigital electrode to improve the conductivity, bending performance, and local electric field strength. Due to the tip effect, the local electric field of the electrode can be improved as high as 1 MV m–1, which can kill the bacteria. The system can achieve a long-term sterilization rate of up to 90%, which has great application potential in the sterilization direction of wearable electronic devices.

It is valuable to design a photocatalyst semiconductor architecture that enables the effective contact with bacteria, since only random and momentary contact exists in most of the present photocatalytic antibacterial systems. Herein, nanomesh-structured graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) a visible-light photocatalyst was successfully prepared using SiO 2 microspheres as template. The optimal pore size in the g-C 3 N 4 nanomesh was determined at the average diameter of about 500 nm of SiO 2 microspheres, which matches the size of E.coli K-12. Excluding the effect of electrostatic contact, the efficient contact between catalyst and bacteria was achieved, leading to increased capture and reaction time for killing bacteria. The porous structure promoted the light absorption and realized more active edge. As a result, the photocatalytic antibacterial activity and the leakage of K + ions was greatly enhanced via . OH radical as the main active species. This work provided a new approach to photocatalytic sterilization for practical applications. A booming demand for wearable electronic devices urges the development of multifunctional smart fabrics. However, it is still facing a challenge to fabricate multifunctional smart fabrics with satisfactory mechanical property, excellent Joule heating performance, highly efficient photothermal conversion, outstanding electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, and superior anti-bacterial capability. Here, a MoSe 2 @MXene heterostructure-based multifunctional cellulose fabric is fabricated by depositing MXene nanosheets onto cellulose fabric followed by a facile hydrothermal method to grow MoSe 2 nanoflakes on MXene layers. A low-voltage Joule heating therapy platform with rapid Joule heating response (up to 230 °C in 25 s at a supplied voltage of 4 V) and stable performance under repeated bending cycles (up to 1000 cycles) is realized. Besides, the multifunctional fabric also exhibits excellent photothermal performance (up to 130 °C upon irradiation for 25 s with a light intensity of 400 mW cm −2 ), outstanding electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness (37 dB), and excellent antibacterial performances (>90% anti-bacterial rate toward Escherichia coli , Bacillus subtilis , and Staphylococcus aureus ). This work offers an efficient avenue to fabricate multifunctional wearable thermal therapy devices for mobile healthcare and personal thermal management.

Bacteria in the external environment inevitably invade the wound and subsequently colonize the wound surface during surgery and biomedical operations, which slows down the process of wound healing and tissue repair; this poses a significant threat to human health. Therefore, the development of an intelligent antibacterial surface has become the focus of research in the field of antimicrobial strategies, which has important social and economic significance. Here, we present a simple approach of producing an ionic interaction-driven anionic activation substratum which is then functionalized with cationic molecules through coulombic interactional immobilization. The switchable multifunctional antibacterial surface can decrease bacterial attachment and inactivate the attached microorganisms, thus overcoming the conventional challenge for antibacterial surfaces. Briefly, poly (3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt) (PSPMA) brushes were constructed by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization on silicon or cotton fabric substrates, and a positive-charged component, namely lysozyme (LYZ), hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) or chitosan (CS), was loaded on negative-charged sulfonate groups through electrostatic interactions . The resultant brush-grafted surfaces exhibited more than ∼95.5% bactericidal efficacy and ∼92.8% release rate after the introduction of an adequate amount of contra-ions (1.0 M; Na + & Cl − ) against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus , thus achieving a regenerated surface through the cyclic process of “assembly-dissociation”. Smart cotton fabric (Fabric-PSPMA/LYZ and Fabric-PSPMA/CS) surfaces were constructed, which were found to promote wound epidermal tissue regeneration with a higher efficiency after 7-day in vivo studies. This ionic interaction-driven method used in the present work is simple and can reversibly renew antibacterial surfaces, which will help in the wider utilization of switchable antibacterial materials with a more ecologic and economic significance. Statement of significance Smart antibacterial surfaces with renewable characteristics have attracted considerable interests over the past few years. Here, we used ionic interaction-driven force to manipulate dynamic conformational changes in PSPMA surface brushes, accompanied by highly switchable bacteria killing and bacteria releasing behaviors. Different cationic molecules were also designed for assembly/dissociation on the PSPMA-modified surfaces, and the essential parameters, including chemical structures , molecular weight, and cationic charge density, were investigated. With the refined structural combinations and the balance of bacteria killing/bacteria releasing behaviors, smart cotton fabrics (e.g., Fabric-PSPMA/lysozyme and Fabric-PSPMA/chitosan) were designed that could promote wound healing and tissue repair. These results contribute to the fundamental understanding of a switchable cationic-anionic pair design and the corresponding practical, renewable, highly antibacterial fabric.

A functionalized paper based on gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) conjugated graphene oxide (GO) was developed for near-infrared (NIR) laser triggered photothermal ablation against infectious bacterial pathogens. Firstly, quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan (QCMC) not only acted as reducing agent to synthesize Au NPs, but also functioned as coupling agent to link up Au NPs with GO. Au-QCMC-GO(+) was supposed to synergistically intensify the photothermal effect, which was then mixed with nanocellulose to form a functionalized paper via vacuum filtration. The photothermal efficiency, antibacterial treatment and mechanical property of Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper were investigated. Excited by NIR laser irradiation, Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper generated a temperature rise over 80 °C, sufficient for photothermal ablation upon both Gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis and Stapylococcus aureus ) and Gram-negative bacteria ( Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ). Additionally, Au-QCMC-GO(+)/nanocellulose paper showed a remarkable enhancement in tensile strength, bursting index and tear index compared to those of pure nanocellulose paper.

In this study, a chitosan-based high polymer antibacterial agent CS-g-DMC with high water solubility was synthesized via an environmentally friendly initiator system of H 2 O 2 and ascorbic acid (Vc). The CS-g-DMC is used for the long-effective antibacterial finishing of cotton fabric. SEM, EDS, FTIR, XPS, and XRD were conducted to characterize the finished fabric. After the treatment, the CS-g-DMC were cross-linked with cellulose by 1,2,3,4-Butane tetracarboxylic acid BTCA thus immobilized on cotton fabrics. Results showed CS-g-DMC had linked with cellulose by stable chemical bond and uniformly distributed on the surface of cotton fiber. The antibacterial test shows that after treatment, the inhibition rates of the cotton fabric against E. coli and S. aureus are above 99.9%. Moreover, the inhibition rates of the two bacteria reach 94.3% and 95.3% after washing ten times, respectively. The finished cotton fabric had significantly improved hydrophily; its contact angle decreased from 107° to 104°. Its breaking force significantly increased from 173.38 to 219.33 N, while its breaking elongation and moisture transmission rate had no significant decrease. In general, CS-g-DMC-finished cotton fabrics achieve long-lasting antibacterial properties and higher mechanical properties while retaining a high degree of wearing comfort.

The crosslinked of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and sodium alginate (SA) with a range of weight ratios formed blend films. Antibacterial packaging films (HPMC/ZA blend film) were prepared by simple ion exchange method with HPMC/SA blend film. The mixture of Zn 2+ gave a plenty effect of the prepared films. The microstructure, physical properties, structure, and antibacterial properties of crosslinked films were investigated in detail. It was found that the infrared shifted peaks of O–H stretching and O–H bending in crosslinked HPMC/ZA film, which was caused by the formation of hydrogen bond between HPMC and ZA. SEM images of HPMC 5 /ZA 5 blend film exhibited rougher structure. In addition, the light transmission, thermal properties, water vapor permeability, and antibacterial activity of HPMC 5 /ZA 5 blend film are obviously enhanced, compared with HPMC/SA blend film. Furthermore, HPMC 5 /ZA 5 blend film exhibited better antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli , revealing the possible application on food packaging.

Wound-associated infections represent an arduous global healthcare challenge, especially in the “post-antibiotic” era, necessitating the development of advanced antimicrobial dressing materials that simultaneously dictate the use of rapid yet effective disinfection, low drug resistance and side effects, and the potency to foster tissue healing. Nanoantimicrobial-armored nanostructured functional dressing systems have piqued extensive interest to satisfy these criteria. Herein, fusing electrospinning nanotechnology and an emerging photo–chemo synergistic sterilization paradigm, a smart “all-in-one” multifunctional wound-managing dressing platform was constructed, through incorporating photochemically active nanocrystalline cuprous oxide (Cu2O) into modified polycaprolactone (mPCL) electrospun fibrous mats. The resulting materials were systematically characterized pertaining to physiochemical analysis, photoabsorption and photocurrent measurements, and photocatalytic reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The capability of this nanoplatform to elicit rapid, photoactivated, catalytically augmented bacterial disinfection was corroborated, displaying ∼99–100% broad-spectrum antibacterial efficacies against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in 25 min. Benefiting from the release of Cu2+, mPCL-Cu2O impairs bacterial contamination even under dark conditions. Furthermore, these materials also exhibited favorable in vitro/-ovo biocompatibility toward NIH3T3 fibroblasts, red blood cells, and chick chorioallantoic membrane, alongside appreciable pro-healing capacity in bridging scratch-based wounds, which could be attributed to nanofiber-afforded biomimetic topography and controllable liberation of micronutrient Cu ions. This study provides insights into the design and fabrication of simple yet smart antibacterial nanoplatforms for biomedical applications.

Elderly patients predispose to cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) pocket infections due to multiple comorbidities. Treating infections with the antibiotics further carry higher risks for complications, and surgical intervention can be costly when device removal and reimplantation are required, both emphasizing the importance of novel preventive strategies to minimize the incidence of pocket infections. To meet the unique needs for elderly, we constructed an CIED surface modified hydrogel which crosslinked polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) with hyaluronic acid-nitrobenzene (HN) to form the polymeric structures that mimic the natural environment for promoting “Pocket” surrounding tissue integration and healing. Importantly, we synthesized the new peptidomimetics FK-13 derived by shortening amino acid sequence of LL-37 which is the only human cathelicidin-derived antimicrobial peptide. By incorporating FK-13 with initial PN hydrogel via Schiff base formation, the created PN-FK hydrogel exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against bacteria with excellent biocompatibility and mechanical properties in a long-term release manner. In an in vitro setting, PN-FK hydrogel demonstrated the regeneration capacity by expression of Hmox1, Col5 and Col6 associated genes in fibroblasts as well as expression of Gpx1, Cdc20 and MMP9 genes in stem cells to accelerate self-renewal, collagen secretion and reconstitution of matrix components. In the following in vivo model of subcutaneous implantation, CIED-shape titanium mesh with surface modification by PN-FK hydrogel efficiently subsided over-inflammation compared to bare titanium implant, and expedited collagen deposition and angiogenesis in peri -pocket tissues within 2 weeks. These findings underscore the potential of the PN-FK hydrogel as a transformative approach to CIED postoperative management, offering a dual-action solution that combines infection resistance with tissue regeneration capabilities.

Pathogenic bacteria that adhere on the surface of textiles, especially healthcare workers’ uniforms, have brought severe problems, including nosocomial infection and other infectious diseases. Here, antibacterial textiles are fabricated by in situ growing oxygen vacancies (OVs) BiOBr on the surface of Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets followed by in situ polymerization of polypyrrole (ppy). The formed Schottky heterojunction containing OVs of Ti 3 C 2 /BiOBr effectively enhance the transfer and separation of photogenerated carriers, inhibit the recombination, and decrease the band gap by introducing defect level, which significantly improve the photocatalytic activity, leading to higher reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation. Therefore, the antibacterial efficacy of textiles reaches up to 98.64% against Staphylococcus aureus and 99.89% against Escherichia coli with the assistance of hyperthermia under light irradiation for 15 min. This work provides insights for designing photo-excited antibacterial textiles by interfacial construction based on Schottky junctions and OVs in the incorporated nanomaterials.
