Preparation of Long-Term Antibacterial SiO2-Cinnamaldehyde Microcapsule via Sol-Gel Approach as a Functional Additive for PBAT Film

Yangfan Xu,Chongxing Huang,Xiujie Dang,Muhammad Rafiullah Khan,Haohe Huang,Yuan Zhao,Shuangfei Wang

The mesoporous silica wall materials can achieve controlled load and sustained-release of active agents. An antimicrobial nanoscale silica microcapsule containing cinnamaldehyde (CA) was prepared by the sol-gel method and applied in poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT) film. The surface morphology, physical and chemical properties, and antibacterial properties of microcapsules and films were studied. The effects of different temperatures and humidities on the release behavior of microcapsules were also evaluated. Results showed that CA was successfully encapsulated in silica microcapsule which had a diameter of 450–700 nm. The antibacterial CA agent had a long-lasting release time under lower temperature and relative humidity (RH) environment. At low temperature (4 °C), the microcapsules released CA 32.35% in the first 18 h, and then slowly released to 56.08% in 216 h; however, the microcapsules released more than 70% in 18 h at 40 °C. At low humidity (50%RH), the release rates of microcapsules at the 18th h and 9th d were 43.04% and 78.01%, respectively, while it reached to equilibrium state at 72 h under 90% RH. The sustained release process of CA in SiO2-CA microcapsules follows a first-order kinetic model. Physicochemical properties of PBAT films loaded with different amounts of microcapsules were also characterized. Results showed that the tensile strength and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the composite film containing 2.5% microcapsules were increased by 26.98% and 14.61%, respectively, compared to the raw film, while the light transmittance was slightly reduced. The crystallinity of the film was improved and can be kept stable up to 384.1 °C. Furthermore, microcapsules and composite film both exhibited distinctive antibacterial effect onEscherichia coliandListeria monocytogenes. Therefore, SiO2-CA microcapsules and composite films could be a promising material for the active packaging. Keywords:cinnamaldehyde;PBAT;antibacterial materials;composite film

Preparation technology and preservation mechanism of γ-CD-MOFs biaological packaging film loaded with curcumin

Lixin Kang,Qiufang Liang,Qayum Abdul,Arif Rashid,Xiaofeng Ren,Haile Ma

To prevent food spoilage caused by microbial infection, the development of an environmentally friendly antimicrobial preservation material is crucial. Here, the microporous γ-CD-MOFs was utilized to encapsulate the hydrophobic active substance curcumin, resulting in the preparation of a non-toxic antimicrobial material (Cur-CD-MOFs). The results revealed that curcumin encapsulation in Cur-CD-MOFs occurred primarily in the carbonyl group, benzene ring, and enolic side ring of curcumin. The Cur-CD-MOFs had a 100% bactericidal effect on Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus at 4 h and 8 h, and a strong inhibitory effect on aerial mycelium of Penicillium expansum and Botrytis cinerea . Furthermore, the incorporation of Cur-CD-MOFs improved the Pul/Tre film barrier and mechanical properties. The effectiveness of Cur-CD-MOFs-Pul/Tre in retaining fruit freshness was validated using Centennial Seedless grapes. This study confirmed that Cur-CD-MOFs is a promising antibacterial material, and Cur-CD-MOFs-Pul/Tre will be a potent candidate for food preservation.

Design of an intelligent Near-Infrared responsive antibacterial Nano-Platform based on MoS2/Cu3Mo2O9

Zhenhao Xia,Xiaoyong Tian,Peipei Xu,Baijie Cheng,Hongyao Xu,Shanyi Guang

In this era of high drug resistance, there is an urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents and strategies to achieve smarter sterilization effects. However, developing an environmentally friendly, controllable, and self-cleaning smart antimicrobial material remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a smart antimicrobial nanoplatform composed of Cu 3 Mo 2 O 9 and MoS 2 has been successfully designed and synthesized. The computational findings reveal that, owing to the interfacial coupling between the two substances at the solid junction, this architecture can effectively absorb near-infrared light, significantly reduce migration resistance, and improve carrier separation efficiency. Empirical observations demonstrate that with a sample concentration of 100 μg/mL, under near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation, the microenvironmental temperature proximal to the bacteria can be swiftly elevated from 28.6 °C to in excess of 50 °C within a mere 6 min. The overall photothermal conversion efficiency is 32.6 %, and it exhibits an active oxygen level nearly 5 times higher than that of Cu 3 Mo 2 O 9 . Furthermore, the permeability of the cell membrane was greatly improved with the increased temperature, which is beneficial for the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) entering the bacterial cells. After synergistic antimicrobial treatment, the antibacterial rate against Escherichia coli can reach over 99 %. More importantly, this nano-platform features a unique ’activation’ mechanism that uses NIR as an ’activation switch’ to selectively toggle between ’passive defense,’ ’secondary sterilization,’ and ’active attack’ antibacterial modes as needed. Upon interaction with aqueous environments, its reusability and favorable biocompatibility with terrestrial and aquatic life promise to facilitate the intelligent eradication of deleterious microorganisms in aquatic systems via the diurnal cycle of sunrise and sunset. This is highly significant for the ongoing management and maintenance of public resources such as amusement parks, artificial fish ponds, and urban water features.

Hydrogel bionic skin: From bacterial antifouling and detection to efficient inactivation and self-cleaning

Junfang Chang,Weijun Wu,Ranran Wu,Zhiyong Guo,Sui Wang,Jie Mao

Timely diagnosis and treatment of bacterial infections are essential to controlling the spread of infectious diseases. However, the development of integrated antimicrobial platforms capable of in situ detection and in situ treatment remains a significant challenge. Inspired by human skin, this work developed a NIPAM/SBMA/BTB-AgNPs@MXene (NSB-AM) hydrogel bionic skin, using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) as the hydrogel matrix, AgNPs@MXene (AM) as the filler, and bromothymol blue (BTB) as the indicator. In contrast to conventional antibacterial materials, the NSB-AM hydrogel features a multimodal antimicrobial mechanism that integrates bacterial antifouling, detection, inactivation, and self-cleaning. Experimental analysis shows that the inherent antibacterial and antifouling properties of the hydrogel can spontaneously resist bacterial contamination. When its antibacterial effect is not satisfactory, the hydrogel exhibits an optical color change that can be detected by the naked eye, enabling in situ detection of bacteria. Irradiation with near-infrared (NIR) light at this stage can achieve in situ photothermal therapy (PTT) of bacteria. Moreover, the change in the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the hydrogel itself is conducive to cleaning dead bacteria and avoiding the contamination of bacterial biofilms. Furthermore, the excellent self-adhesive properties, biocompatibility, and electrical properties of the NSB-AM hydrogel enable it to adhere to the surfaces of different materials as bionic skin for real-time intelligent antibacterial applications. In summary, as an intelligent, versatile, and simple multi-functional antibacterial system, the NSB-AM hydrogel bionic skin offers novel strategies for bacterial transmission control with significant potential in healthcare and life sciences.

Crosslinked pectin nanofibers with well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles: Preparation and characterization

Ke Li,Sisi Cui,Junli Hu,Yifa Zhou,Yichun Liu

Nanofibers with well-dispersed Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) are promising for some applications. Dispersion electrospinning is a straightforward preparation method but is suffered from the negative effects that the further treatments of nanofibers after electrospinning may bring to the dispersed AgNPs. In this study, we report a post reduction method to fabricate nanofibers with well-dispersed AgNPs. Crosslinked nanofibers of a hydrophilic polysaccharide, pectin, are used. When being immersed in the aqueous solution of AgNO 3 , the crosslinked pectin nanofibers swell, allowing Ag + ions enter inside. The surrounding crosslinked pectin macromolecules functionalize as in situ reducing reagents to reduce Ag + ions, nucleating the crystallization of AgNPs locally. X-ray diffraction characterizations indicate that the formed AgNPs are face-centered cubic crystalline. Results of optical imaging, UV–vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron dispersive spectrometry as well as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicate that the content and size of AgNPs increase with the increase of AgNO 3 concentration and incubation time. SEM and TEM results show that the dispersion of the AgNPs does not affect the nanofibrous structure and size of the crosslinked pectin nanofibers. TEM results also demonstrate that AgNPs distribute homogeneously along both the length and diameter direction of nanofibers. The composite nanofibers can sustainably release silver for 4 weeks and inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli for 7 days, showing great potential as long-term antibacterial materials. The method may also be used to disperse AgNPs in other hydrophilic nanofibers which need further treatments after electrospinning.

Preparation and characterisation of copper inorganic antibacterial material containing holmium

D. Zhang,B. Zhang,X. N. Tang,Y. P. He,G. C. Gao,P. Jiang

A new inorganic antibacterial material was synthesised by the sol–gel method using copper ion as antibacterial ion, holmium nitrate as additive and white carbon black as carrier. The structure and properties of the inorganic antibacterial material were characterised by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques, energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and antibacterial experiments (Escherichia coli as experimental bacteria). The result showed that the bacteriostasis rate of this new material was higher than that of the general Cu antibacterial white carbon black (without containing holmium); the bacteriostasis rate was over 90%. The form of the inorganic antibacterial material was investigated by XRD. The difference between the new inorganic antibacterial material and white carbon black was studied by FT-IR. Scanning electron microscopy and EDS were used to detect the holmium ion in the material.

Synthesis of poly-tetrahydropyrimidine antibacterial polymers and research of their basic properties

Taimin Xu,Wenlong Li,Rong Zhang,Shuaibing Guo,Bing Yu,Hailin Cong,Youqing Shen

Modern medicine has increasingly higher requirements for antibacterial materials. To overcome this challenge, we use alkynyl monomers, amino monomers, formaldehyde, and acetic acid as raw materials to synthesize a series of poly-tetrahydropyrimidine (P-THP) polymers through multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs). P-THP polymers can effectively inhibit the growth of Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, S. aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia. coli, E. coli), and can prevent bacteria from developing drug resistance within at least 16 generations. Besides, we prepared P-THP antibacterial coatings and explored their antibacterial properties. In vitro antibacterial experiments showed that P-THP coatings can prevent the formation of bacterial biofilms, and the coatings have a lasting killing effect on E. coli and S. aureus. The mouse wound infection experiments proved that P-THP polymers can significantly accelerate skin tissue regeneration and wound healing. Moreover, the P-THP textile obtained by electrospinning also has antibacterial properties and has great application prospects in the field of N95 masks. Generally speaking, P-THP polymers have considerable application potential in the field of treating bacterial infections and promoting wound healing.

Capillary Condensation Mediated Fluidic Straining for Enhanced Bacterial Inactivation

Yuanyuan Zhao,Hubao A,Yuk Ha Cheung,Yintung Lam,Jiayue Tang,Han Li,Zhibing Yang,John Haozhong Xin

Biomaterials capable of continuously inactivating pathogens are essential for suppressing transmission of infectious diseases, such as epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis and pulmonary tuberculosis. Here, capillary condensation of air moisture within nano-confined spaces between superhydrophilic rigid nanorods is shown and target microbiology spontaneously stretch and inactivate aerosolized microorganisms. Specifically, the negative Gaussian curvature-shaped water condensate causes fluidic straining, comprising surface tension and Laplace pressure, strong enough to deform and eliminate the selected bacteria. Plate counting quantifies the sharply reduced contact-killing period for superhydrophilic and bare nanorods (6 vs 100 min for E. coli , 20 vs 120 min for S. aureus ) under relative humidity of 70%. Theoretical calculations and experimental studies indicate increased mechanical straining and mechano-bactericidal by improving air moisture content. To further illustrate utility, long-term antibacterial medical masks are fabricated by integrating such nanorods onto commercial fabrics. Collectively, these findings highlight the immense potential of capillary condensation-induced fluidic straining as an eco-friendly, broad-spectrum, and highly efficient antibacterial strategy.

Polydopamine-assisted decoration of silver nanoparticles on gold nanorods for photothermal and chemical antimicrobial applications

Yuting Zhao,Ke Zhan,Pengshan Geng,Shan Jiang

Bacterial infections have been a serious threat to human health and caused millions of deaths, which brought an urgent requirement for the development of efficient antimicrobial materials. Herein, we prepared AuNRs@PDA@AgNPs nanocomposites by assembling silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) on gold nanorods (AuNRs) with the assistance of polydopamine (PDA). The constructed AuNRs@PDA@AgNPs have good photothermal effects with a temperature raise of ∼28 °C at 150 μg mL−1 under 808 nm laser illumination of 1.0 W cm−2. Meanwhile, the decorated AgNPs provided chemical bactericidal effects, whereas the release of Ag was also enhanced by the light illumination. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AuNRs@PDA@AgNPs against the bacteria was 16 μg mL−1, at which AuNRs@PDA@AgNPs can inhibit the bacterial cell viability to 5.3% and 2.0% for E. coli and S. aureus bacteria, respectively. In this work, a novel nanocomposite that realizes synergistic photothermal and chemical sterilization is successfully constructed.

Fabrication of novel antimicrobial poly(vinyl chloride) plastic for automobile interior applications

Shi Hong,Liu Xueqing,Zhang Yuanfang

With the fast development of auto industry, more and more new functional materials are developed to satisfy our life. Auto interior materials are usually suffered from the attack of bacteria and therefore affect people. In this work, we reported on the fabrication of novel antimicrobial poly(vinyl chloride) plastic (PVCP-I, PVCP-II) with antimicrobial halloysite nanotubes and SiO 2 /ZnO/ZnS/Ag 2 S nano-composites as additives, respectively, and then these two kinds of novel antimicrobial poly(vinyl chloride) PVC materials were applied to automobile interior. Firebrake ® ZB was used as the fire retardant and the results showed that the prepared PVC materials have excellent non-flammability properties. The oxygen indexes of traditional PVCP, PVCP-I and PVCP-II were 30.1, 31.9 and 32.5 %, respectively. PVC antimicrobial materials were prepared by coating on the special paper. PVCP-I and PVCP-II could kill more than 99 % of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with concentration of about 7 × 10 7 and 4 × 10 7  CFU mL −1 , respectively. Mechanical properties and thermal stability were also investigated to study the physical characteristics of the prepared PVC plastic. The formation of nano-additives was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Antimicrobial capacity was used as a probe to evaluate the potential applications of prepared PVC-I and PVC-II materials in antimicrobial automobile interiors. Also, the material was characterized by thermo-gravimetric analysis; the result showed that PVCP-I and PVCP-II have excellent thermo-stability. What counts is the simple processing and outstanding characteristic of the PVCP material and great application potential may have in store for the obtained antimicrobial PVC-I and PVCP-II.

Facile synthesis of chitosan/Ag-waterborne polyurethane composite films with a high stability and controllable water resistance for potential application in antibacterial materials

Youliang Cheng,Ying Wei,Changqing Fang,Hang Li,Jing Chen,Jin Zhang,Zhigang Huang

Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) and Ag NPs have been applied widely in packaging. However, WPU was susceptible to the contamination due to high moisture absorption, and the stability of Ag NPs in matrix polymers was still low. To resolve this problem, chitosan (CS) was used as the dispersant to synthesize CS/Ag NPs composites in this work, and then they were mixed with WPU to prepare CS/Ag-WPU films. CS macromolecules provided the carriers for Ag NPs with a diameter of about 2.5 nm, and Ag NPs were dispersed stably in WPU. Compared with pure WPU film, as-prepared CS/Ag-WPU films had a higher thermal stability at low temperature, and the crystal size for WPU increased after introducing CS/Ag NPs. Importantly, the water contact angle for CS/Ag-WPU-5 increased to 54.2° from 27.5° implying that the hydrophobicity was improved. In addition, CS/Ag-WPU composites exhibited an excellent inhibitory effect on Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). Antibacterial performances of most samples were improved with the crease of the concentration of CS, and the inhibitory effect on S. aureus was preferred. Therefore, as-prepared CS/Ag-WPU films in this paper have a potential application in antibacterial packaging field.

Construction of organic compatible kaolinite antibacterial material via a dry process and its enhanced antibacterial activity

Xiaoyu Zhang,Shengping Li,Ning Zhao,Yueqing Deng,Zengjie Zuo,Chunquan Li,Shuilin Zheng,Zhiming Sun

In today’s world of antibiotic abuse and bacterial resistance, it is urgent to propose a non-antibiotic solution against bacterial wound infections. Hence, the present work prepared kaolinite (KAO)-based organic antibacterial material (CA/KAO) modified with chlorhexidine acetate (CA) via a dry process. And the potential of CA/KAO in the doping preparation of antibacterial wound dressings was evaluated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) as an organic matrix. The results demonstrated that a synergistic promotion system between CA and kaolinite was formed. Kaolinite optimized the thermal stability of CA and controlled it to achieve a demand-oriented release mode of “burst + slow” release. CA was mainly attached to the surface of kaolinite by hydrogen bonding to impart its antibacterial properties and enhanced organic compatibility. For Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ), which is prone to induce wound infections, CA/KAO showed a low-level MIC of 11.72 mg/L and achieved a 98.37% antibacterial rate by contact inactivation and released CA sterilization. CA/KAO was homogeneously dispersed in PVA film and achieved inhibition zones of 15.393 mm and 12.663 mm against S. aureus and Escherichia coli (E. coli) , respectively, at 30 wt% doping. It is expected that CA/KAO would be an option for the mass production of antibacterial wound dressings.
