Long-lasting and highly efficient antibacterial fabrics play a key role in public health occurrences caused by bacterial and viral infections. However, the production of antibacterial fabrics with a large size, highly efficient, and broad-spectrum antibacterial performance remains a great challenge due to the complex processes. Herein, we demonstrate sizable and highly efficient antibacterial fabrics through hydrogen bonding interaction and electrostatic interaction between surface groups of ZnO nanoparticles and fabric fibers. The production process can be carried out at room temperature and achieve a production rate of 300 × 1 m2 within 1 h. Under both visible light and dark conditions, the bactericidal rate against Gram-positive (S. aureus), Gram-negative (E. coli), and multidrug-resistant (MRSA) bacteria can reach an impressive 99.99%. Furthermore, the fabricated ZnO nanoparticle-decorated antibacterial fabrics (ZnO@fabric) show high stability and long-lasting antibacterial performance, making them easy to develop into variable antibacterial blocks for protection suits.

Coal fly ash, a waste byproduct of coal-fired power plants rich in silica, is produced in vast quantities, exceeding 750 million tons annually. This abundance underscores the importance of finding sustainable and value-added applications for its reuse. Silver nanoparticle–silica composites represent a class of inorganically hybrid antimicrobial agents as the protection layer of cotton fabrics. However, prior work has seldom involved in the recycling of waste silica sources or in situ incorporation of well-defined and hierarchical Ag nanostructure. In this study, a new type of hydrophobic and antimicrobial fabric layer composed of silver-doped silicate nanomembrane was fabricated with the extraction of silica particles from waste coal fly ash by physicochemical and hydrothermal method for dual applications in personal protection and oil–water separation. The results from detailed material synthesis, soft flakes of silica extraction and formation of silver nanoparticle-based silicate revealed correlations between SiO 2 and Ag having featured surface morphology and antimicrobial activity without any toxic effect to cells with polydimethoxysilane coatings. The developed fabric shows the satisfactory antimicrobial property increased up to 100% and oil–water separation performance was increased more than 90%, excellent selectivity, reversibility, reusability and stability. The compiled results have great implications for the management of solid waste like coal fly ash to biomedical and textile industry toward the production of personal protective equipment and high-performance nanomembrane for the treatment of contaminated water with oil.

Although various antibacterial fabrics have been extensively developed, smart antibacterial fabrics that can achieve stimulus responses have not been developed under high humidity conditions. In this study, a smart sweat-responsive antibacterial fabric has been designed by grafting zwitterionic PTMSPMA-co-PTMAO copolymer on cotton fabric (CF) to achieve “active attack” and “passive defense” against bacteria. It exhibits desirable antibacterial properties in both H2O and dry environments with the killing rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus reaching over 99.97%. Additionally, the fabric exhibits significant antiadhesion effects in sweat environments, with an antiadhesion rate above 99.95%. Various characterizations of PTMSPMA-co-PTMAO-CF reveal its smart responses in killing and antiadhesion of bacteria in high-humidity environments. In H2O, the oxygen-containing anions in PTMSPMA-co-PTMAO-CF interact with H2O via the hydrogen bond, exposing more −(CH3)2–N+ to kill the bacteria and enhance the “active attack.” In sweat, ions (such as Na+ and Cl–) will be electrically neutralized with the quaternary ammonium cations (−(CH3)2–N+) and oxygen-containing anions in PTMSPMA-co-PTMAO-CF, thereby significantly enhancing the antiadhesion and exhibiting “passive defense” in high-humidity environments. PTMSPMA-co-PTMAO-CF can also achieve reversible conversion of killing and antiadhesion, according to variations in the external environments. This study provides new insight on smart antibacterial fabrics in the fields of health monitoring, sports equipment, and medical protection.

The superhydrophobic antibacterial fabrics with intelligent switchable wettability were fabricated by the cross-link reaction among pH-responsive antibacterial copolymer tethered hydroxyl groups, methylol-contained poly(ureaformaldehyde) nanoparticles (PUF NPs), and hexamethylene diisocyanate. It was found that the surface concentration of N+ were heavily influenced by acid solutions, resulting in the rapid wettability conversion from superhydrophobicity/superoleophilicity to superhydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity in a remarkably short time. The above responsiveness feature of coated cotton fabric contributes a prominent selective oil/water separation property, and the separation efficiency invariably remained at greater than 95% even after 20 reuse cycles, which exhibited brilliant durability. More importantly, the coated cotton fabric possessed excellent self-cleaning performance after contamination by oil and held high bactericidal rate (more than 80%) regardless of pH treatment, and thus could abate the surface biological pollution caused by bacteria proliferation. The attractive properties of the prepared smart superwetting materials shows great promise for potential application in oil/water separation from an environmental-protection perspective.

The burgeoning field of smart textiles, particularly those with photothermal conversion capabilities, is driven by the escalating need for energy-efficient and versatile thermoregulation solutions across healthcare, energy, and personal protection applications. Despite the promising potential of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (e.g. MoS 2 ), their practical implementation has been hindered by challenges such as aggregation and the lack of a one-step continuous spinning process for the fabrication of high-performance photothermal fibers. This study addresses these gaps by employing in-situ polymerization to integrate MoS 2 with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymer, yielding the PET/MoS 2 fibers and fabrics that exhibits excellent photothermal antibacterial properties. The uniform distribution of MoS 2 within the PET matrix not only improves the fiber's mechanical integrity but also significantly enhances its photothermal performance and antibacterial activity under photothermal conditions. The tensile strength of the fabric was observed to increase with the incorporation of MoS 2 up to an optimal loading amount. The photothermal performance was found to be exceptional under various light sources, with a direct correlation to the MoS 2 content. The antibacterial efficacy was notably robust, achieving a 95% reduction in both Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) under near-infrared irradiation. This study offers a scalable and efficient solution for advanced wearable thermal management, poised to redefine the future of personal comfort and healthcare technology.

Designing antimicrobial textile materials with non-specific, broad-spectral absorption and multicolor is of great importance in personal health protection. In this study, a highly efficient, broad-spectrum responsive, and dual-color photodynamic antimicrobial nylon/cotton blended fabric (N/C-RB/ZP) was prepared through a one-bath dyeing process based on photosensitive Rose Bengal (RB) and tetra[ β -(4-sodium sulfonylphenoxy)]-phthalocyanine zinc(II) (ZP). The prepared N/C-RB/ZP shows a visible absorption range of 450–700 nm and a mixed color. Additionally, N/C-RB/ZP-0.5 % exhibits superior singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) production capacity, manifesting a “1 + 1 > 2” synergistic effect. The mechanism of synergistic enhancement of photodynamic efficiency by electrostatic repulsion-fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process between two kinds of liked-charge dyes on heterogeneous fibers was confirmed. N/C-RB/ZP-0.5 % exhibits excellent antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (99.99 %) and Escherichia coli (99.67 %) after 90 min of irradiation under daylight flashlight (14 ± 1 mW/cm 2 ), along with good biological safety. Furthermore, after three cycles or 20 times of standard washing, the antibacterial rate remained above 80 % and 75 %, respectively. This dual-photosensitizers modification method for heterogeneous fibers provides a novel strategy for developing efficient, non-resistant, and color-tunable daylight-driven antimicrobial textiles in the fields of healthcare and personal protection.
