Long-term mold resistance strategy of laccase-catalyzed eugenol-modified bamboo and its antimicrobial mechanism derived from lignin

Xuanhao Huang,Xinyi Guo,Yao Meng,Shaobo Lou,Xinxing Wu,Yan Zhang,Renzhong Wei,Shuaibo Han,Fangli Sun,Hui Wang

Bamboo, which has excellent physical properties and environmental credentials, is widely used in the construction industry and furniture manufacturing. Bamboo is, however, susceptible to attack by molds and bacteria; protection by natural phenolic antimicrobial agents would be a green and environmentally friendly solution to this problem. The application of such protection has, so far, been hampered by poor stability and ease of volatilization of the antimicrobial agent. Here, an innovative strategy that uses the catalytic action of the laccase to chemically attach a natural antimicrobial agent, eugenol (EU), to bamboo, is described. This modification endows bamboo with both long-lasting and extensive mold resistance and antibacterial activity. Laccase-catalyzed covalent bonding of EU to bamboo reduces the volatilization rate of the EU from 1.72 % to 0.29 %. The outstanding mold resistance and antimicrobial activity of bamboo treated using this modified process is retained during a 50-day mold resistance test, with mold growth inhibited by as much as 87.5 %. The treated bamboo is also able to inhibit the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antimicrobial mechanism results shown that the bamboo lignin is the primary reaction site during laccase-catalyzed EU modification of bamboo, and the long-term mold resistance derived from modified lignin. Furthermore, we analyzed bacterial morphology through SEM, and the results demonstrated that modified enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) significantly disrupts bacterial morphology, including membrane invagination and collapse. This study provides a new direction for the green development of mold- and bacteria-resistant bamboo, which has potential for use in a wide range of application.

A simple and sustainable method for preparing high-strength, lightweight, dimensional stable, and mildew resistant multifunctional bamboo

Hongyang Lian,Peisheng Li,Yantao Xu,Xiaochun Zhang

Bamboo is a sustainable, functional and rapidly growing natural material with excellent potential in sustainable building and industrial applications. However, as a structural material, bamboo is hindered by its low mechanical strength and poor mildew resistance. In this study, a simple and sustainable process was developed to partially remove lignin and hemicellulose from bamboo through alkaline pretreatment , combined with thermal mechanical compaction, to convert natural bamboo into a lightweight, high-strength, mildew resistant, and durable multifunctional structural material. The results showed that the comprehensive control effectiveness of the alkaline dense bamboo against Aspergillus niger , Penicillium citricola and Trichoderma viridis was 96.2%, the anti-mildew performance was significantly improved. Compared with natural bamboo, the flexural, tensile, and compressive strength of alkaline dense bamboo increased by 6.9 times, 2.5 times, and 4.6 times, respectively, reaching 578 MPa, 410 MPa, and 145 MPa. Compared with some synthetic structural materials with excellent mechanical properties, the alkaline dense bamboo also exhibited superior specific tensile strength and Shore hardness . The multifunctional alkaline dense bamboo prepared in this study provides the possibility for bamboo resources to be widely used in the field of structural engineering.

Fabrication of Mildew-Resistant Wood with Multi-Functional Properties Based on In Situ Growth of Metal–Organic Frameworks

Xingyu Liang,Tao Zhang,Junting Li,Wei Wang,Tiancheng Yuan,Yanjun Li

Wood is easily affected by decay fungi, mildew fungi, insects, water, UV, and other factors when used outdoors. In particular, mildew on the surface of wood negatively affects the appearance and practical use of wood or wood-based engineered products. In recent years, as a class of popular crystalline materials, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely applied in electrochemistry, adsorption, anti-mildew efforts, and other areas. In this study, we first grew a Co-based metal–organic framework (Co-MOF) in situ on a wood surface and subsequently converted the Co-MOF in situ into a cobalt–nickel double hydroxide layer, which formed micro- and nanohierarchical composite structures on the wood surface. The low surface energy of the CoNi-DH@wood was further modified via impregnation with sodium laurate to obtain the superhydrophobic wood (CoNi-DH-La@wood). We characterized the microstructure, chemical composition, water contact angle, and anti-mold properties of the CoNi-DH-La@wood using SEM, XRD, XPS, water contact angle tests, and anti-fungal tests. The SEM, XRD, and XPS results confirmed that the metal–organic framework was coated on the wood surface, with the long-chain sodium laurate grafted onto it. The CoNi-DH-La@wood had a water contact angle of 151°, demonstrating excellent self-cleaning ability. In addition, the fabricated superhydrophobic balsa wood exhibited excellent chemical and environment stability. Lastly, the CoNi-DH-La@wood exhibited excellent anti-mildew properties in a 30-day anti-mildew test because the superhydrophobic coating was successfully coated on the wood surface. In summary, this work presents an attractive strategy for obtaining wood with superhydrophobic properties at room temperature, thereby endowing the wood or wood-based engineered products with excellent anti-mildew properties.

Immobilizing 2-methylimidazole and Zn2+ using metal-organic framework structures for synergistic mildew resistance and enhanced anti-leaching properties

Jian Wang,Zheng Yang,Jinpeng Wang,Chaoyi Fan,Dandan Peng,Lizheng Jin,Furong Chen,Yang Xiang,Yang Su,Xue Yang,Yajun Pang,Hao Chen,Xin Zheng,Zhehong Shen,Sai Wu

Traditional inorganic anti-mildew materials exhibit limited anti-mildew efficacy when applied to bamboo, while organic anti-mildew reagents face issues of low loading and easy leaching. To address these challenges, this study explored the use of a two-dimensional leaf-shaped zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-L), formed by the coordination of 2-methylimidazole with Zn 2+ , as an anti-fungi additive in polyurethane (PU) coatings. The objective was to enhance the anti-mildew properties of bamboo and its products in outdoor environments. Analysis of the mechanical properties reveals that the dynamic mechanical performance of the modified PU coating is significantly improved compared to that of pure PU coatings. The anti-mildew tests further demonstrate that, compared to inorganic zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles and small-molecule 2-methylimidazole, the ZIF-L structure exhibits a synergistic anti-mildew effect of Zn 2+ and the 2-methylimidazole ligand, resulting in superior mildew resistance. No fungal growth was observed over 28 days. Furthermore, the ZIF-L modified PU coating demonstrated excellent resistance to leaching in a simulated rainfall exposure experiment, with an extremely low leaching rate of anti-mildew agent in the PU coating. The anti-mildew test after the simulated rainfall exposure confirmed its anti-mildew effect remained durable and stable, with significantly lower area of mold infection. These results reveal that the metal–organic framework (MOF) structure effectively immobilizes 2-methylimidazole and Zn 2+ , providing synergistic mildew resistance. The interaction between ZIF-L and PU enhances the anti-leaching properties of the coating.

Mantis shrimp-inspired functionalized plant fibers to fabricate a soy protein adhesive with high strength and mildew resistance

Hongji Li,Rui Wang,Miao Zheng,Mingyun He,Xiaorong Liu,Kaili Wang,Youming Dong,Yanjun Li,Jianzhang Li

Soy protein-based adhesives present a promising alternative to petroleum-based adhesives in the wood industry. Nevertheless, their limitations, including insufficient water resistance, low bonding strength, and inadequate mold resistance, constrain their industrial applications. Plant fiber-reinforced composites find extensive applications across various sectors, including furniture, automotive, and aerospace. However, the smooth surfaces of the fibers adversely impact the reinforcement effect. Inspired by the multilayered microscale structure of peacock mantis shrimp chelipeds, this work presents an eco-friendly method to develop hierarchical functionalized kenaf fibers (KF) for reinforcing soybean meal (SM) adhesive. Specifically, ZnO was deposited onto the KF surface to impart micro-nano roughness, thereby enhancing their mechanical interlocking effect with the SM matrix. Bio-based lipoic acid (LA) and limonene (LIM) were employed to create a highly reactive layer on the fiber surface, facilitating the formation of multiple chemical crosslinking structures with the SM matrix. The synergistic mechanical and chemical effects between KF and SM endowed adhesive with improved performance. The wet shear strength of the three-layer plywood prepared with the synthetic adhesive was remarkably increased by 450 % to 1.21 MPa. Additionally, the combined anti-mold effects of ZnO, LA, LIM, and triglyceride amine (TGA) extend the adhesive's storage time to 7 days. This sustainable and eco-friendly design of multilayered bionically functionalized KF offers an efficient approach for the high-value utilization of agroforestry residues, presenting broad application prospects in SM-based adhesives.

Preparation and Characterization of a Robust, High Strength, and Mildew Resistant Fully Biobased Adhesive from Agro-Industrial Wastes

Huan Chen,Shiqing Chen,Dongbin Fan,Yong Wang

Recent decades have witnessed an increasing trend of replacing conventional formaldehyde-based adhesives with sustainable and ecofriendly biobased adhesives in the commercial wood industry. The present study developed a full biomass utilization design for adhesives consisting of a cheap soybean meal and a lignin-based crosslinking agent (EXL). The primary component of the latter, i.e., epoxidized lignin, was synthesized using alkaline lignin and epichlorohydrin under simple reaction conditions. The Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance analyses revealed the epoxy characteristic peaks in EXL, further validating the efficacy of the design developed. This simple design successfully synthesized the EXL with more epoxy groups. Moreover, a fully biobased adhesive with a wet bonding strength of up to 0.96 MPa was produced by incorporating the EXL as a sole crosslinking agent, which satisfies the requirements for interior plywood use. Furthermore, the effect of the lignin-based crosslinking agent with more epoxy groups on the structural changes, thermal stability, and micromorphology of the resulting adhesive was investigated. The incorporation of EXL exhibited a beneficial impact on the soy adhesive with improved wet bonding strength and thermal stability. Additionally, the antimold observation experiment under a high humidity environment demonstrated that the EXL contributed to the excellent antimold performance of the adhesive.

A bio-based soy protein adhesive with high strength, toughness, and mildew resistance

Tianxiang Xu,Shuting Zhang,Yuanwei Wang,Anbo Pan,Genghao Zheng,Xiaochun Zhang,Yantao Xu

Soy protein adhesives as a viable alternative eco-friendly biomass material, hold immense potential in replacing traditional formaldehyde-based adhesives. However, soy protein adhesives suffer from issues such as high bonding brittleness and susceptibility to mold. In this study, a modified agent (CS@PEI) was synthesized by grafting chitosan (CS) onto polyethyleneimine (PEI), and a tightly cross-linked network structure was created triglycidylamine (TGA) to modify the soy protein adhesive, improving its bonding toughness and anti-mildew properties. In comparison to the soy protein (SPI) adhesive, the wet shear strength of SPI/TGA/CS@PEI-4 adhesive was improved by 106.78 % (1.22 MPa), the dry/wet tensile strain increased by 13.1 % and 45.0 %, the residual ratio was augmented by 24.9 % (63.1 %), while the storage time was increased from 2 d to over 30 d. The presence of the modifier (CS@PEI) destroyed the bacterial habitat, while the cross-linking modification strategy facilitated the formation of a robust reticulated network structure within the adhesive, significantly enhancing its water resistance and mildew resistance capabilities. This modification strategy opens an innovative way for exploring the new anti-mildew protein-based adhesives.

Mesoporous silica entrapped alpha-mangostin constructed tough, high strength, and mildew resistant soybean protein adhesives by organic–inorganic strategy

John Tosin Aladejana,Guodong Zeng,Fudong Zhang,Kuang Li,Youming Dong,Xiaona Li,Jianzhang Li

The production of value-added products from agricultural raw materials has been deemed a cutting-edge approach to attaining an uncontaminated geosphere globally. Thus, soybeans have recently attracted several wood-bonding capability studies due to their biobased, high-performance, and sustainable attributes. However, simultaneously achieving high-performance, mechanical, and anti-mildew properties in soybean protein (SBP) adhesive remains an enormous quest. Herein, an organic–inorganic strategy is reported to formulate SBP adhesive via adipic acid hydrazide strengthened α-mangostin (Sα-M) entrapped by mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN), yielding a highly biocompatible dense network (MSN/Sα-M). Afterward, the MSN/Sα-M was incorporated into SBP molecular chains through the enhanced dynamic covalent conjugation and intermolecular sacrificial hydrogen bonds to form SBP@MSN/Sα-M adhesive. Consequently, the multiple synergistic interactions resulted in tough adhesive layers, exhibiting high wood-bonding strength of 2.59 and 1.50 MPa at dry and wet conditions, increasing 66% and 206%, respectively. The SBP@MSN/Sα-M adhesive also offers excellent anti-mildew properties, with an extended wood bonding capability beyond 20 days of storage. This unique, versatile, and sustainable strategy provides new headway for developing bio-based wood adhesives from agricultural raw materials.

A water-resistant and mildewproof soy protein adhesive enhanced by epoxidized xylitol

Xin Zhang,Chaojie Xu,Zheng Liu,Sheldon Q. Shi,Jianzhang Li,Jing Luo,Qiang Gao

Soy protein-based adhesives show great prospects in replacing aldehydes resin adhesives to fabricate wood-based panels, however, high doses of synthetic resins as crosslinkers must be used to obtain good bonding performance. To reduce overreliance upon crosslinkers derived from fossil resources, a 100% bio-derived crosslinker-xylitol epoxide (EX) was synthesized from epichlorohydrin and xylitol , followed by blending with soy protein isolate (SPI) to create a functional biological adhesive. After using EX, the wet and dry shear strengths of plywood prepared by the SPI/4%EX adhesive increased by 138.6% and 55.6%, respectively, compared with the pure soy protein adhesive. This was attributable to the crosslinked network formed in adhesive and the enhanced adhesive toughness. The optimized process parameters of plywood prepared with EX-modified soy protein adhesive were 110 ℃, 1.3 min/mm and 0.8 MPa. The addition of EX also improved the mildew-resist property of the adhesive to 10 days, which prolonged the adhesive storage life and the service life of the resultant plywood. Therefore, EX could be utilized to enhance the mechanical and mildew-resist properties of protein-based materials, and shows great potential applications in adhesive, film, and hydrogel.

Superhydrophobic wood grafted by poly(2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate) via ATRP with self-cleaning, abrasion resistance and anti-mold properties

Yu Wang,Zuwu Tang,Shengchang Lu,Min Zhang,Kai Liu,He Xiao,Liulian Huang,Lihui Chen,Hui Wu,Yonghao Ni

Wood is a natural, abundant, renewable resource, which is easily processed, has beautiful texture and good mechanical strength, and is widely used for furniture, flooring, decor and building construction. However, wood is vulnerable to moisture and microorganisms, resulting in deformation, cracks, mold and degradation, which causes aesthetic problems and/or shortens the service life of wood products. In this paper, superhydrophobic wood (wood-F) was fabricated by grafting poly(2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate) (PFOEMA) onto wood by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed that PFOEMA was successfully grafted onto wood. The resultant wood-F exhibited excellent water resistance with a contact angle (CA) of 156° and hysteresis of 4°. The modified wood also showed abrasion resistance, self-cleaning ability and anti-mold properties, all of which are desirable for various wood products.

Spider silk-inspired high-performance soybean meal-based adhesive reinforced by greenly produced chitosan-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets

Jiongjiong Li,Yinuo Chen,Fudong Zhang,Yan Lyu,Xiaona Li,Kuang Li,Jianzhang Li

A facile and environment-friendly bionic strategy is developed to construct high-performance soybean meal (SM)-based multifunctional adhesives by using chitosan-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (CS@BNNSs) as an alternative to β -sheet nanocrystals to mimic the structural characteristics of natural spider silks. CS@BNNSs were cost-effectively and greenly produced from bulk hexagonal boron nitride through chitosan-assisted mechanochemical exfoliation. Compared with the neat crosslinker-modified SM-based adhesive (MSM), the fabricated adhesive (MSM/CS@BNNSs) features remarkable improvement in mechanical performance, such as enhanced wet shear strength (1.31 MPa vs. 0.58 MPa), work of debonding (0.366 J vs. 0.186 J), and dry shear strength (1.96 MPa vs. 1.42 MPa). The outstanding performance is attributable to the dense covalent/non-covalent intermolecular interactions and good compatibility between CS@BNNSs and the SM matrix, which are beneficial to the dissipation and transfer of energy under loading. In addition, the MSM/CS@BNNSs adhesive exhibits noticeably improved flame retardancy and excellent anti-mildew performance compared with the neat SM-based adhesives, and its shelf life reaches up to 72 h. Such an advanced MSM/CS@BNNSs adhesive reaches the engineering resin level and possesses promising potentials for industrial applications. Overall, this facile and efficient spider silk-mimicking structural design strategy assisted by a green and low-cost mechanochemical exfoliation would provide endless inspirations for constructing and reinforcing multifunctional bio-based adhesives, elastomers, and plastic materials.
