AbstractIn this work, a multifunctional coating was developed by grafting a zwitterionic poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)-co-acrylic acid [poly(SBMA-co-AA)] polymer onto a glass slide, which possesses excellent antifog, antifrost, and self-cleaning properties. These properties are attributed to the strong hydration of the hydrophilic zwitterionic PSBMA segments. The durability of the coating can be improved because the carboxyl group (–COOH) of the PAA segment enables formation of a robust covalent bond with the amino group (–NH2) on the substrate. The coating presents long-term stability, as proved by water contact angles, which were stable at 12 ± 1° after exposing the coating in ambient environment for 60 days or immersing in deionized water for 24 h. In addition, the underwater oil contact angle measurement demonstrated that an oil stain on the zwitterionic poly(SBMA-co-AA) polymer coating can be easily removed upon contact with water, showing self-cleaning performance. These properties verified that the zwitterionic multifunctional coating exploited in this research has many potential application prospects, including construction, automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, biomedical, and other optical fields.Graphic abstract

To explore food-grade anti-freezing strategies for the frozen food industry, three bio-inspired binary natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) comprising proline, glucose, and sorbitol were prepared. Besides, through gelling the NADESs, two-dimensional planar film-like eutectogels (PG53, PG11, and PS11) showing sandwich-like structures were fabricated, of which basic characteristics, anti-frosting capacities and freezing-tolerance were investigated. Results indicated that the eutectogels possessing plenty of hydroxy groups within systems could show more hydrophilic surfaces (47.6°–55.7°) as compared with the control group (69.1°). Besides, PS11 showed the best anti-frosting capacity, exhibiting only 36.31% frost-covered area after 120 min under extreme conditions, probably due to its more rugged surface possessing more and spikier hill-like profiles. For freezing-tolerance, all the eutectogels could stay flexible at −40 °C and show stable mechanical strengths before (stress: 3.1–4.4 MPa, strain: 82.6%–104.7%) and after (stress: 2.5–3.9 MPa, strain: 71.9%–96.5%) extreme temperature fluctuation. Given this, an absorption-inhibition hypothesis was proposed and verified by gradient moisture absorption test and cooling-heating cyclic test, through which critical absorption relative humidity (CARH) and glass transition temperature (T g ) were obtained, which suggested that the eutectogels firstly absorbed the ambient moisture easily (CARH: 49% RH ∼ 55% RH) and subsequently inhibited the crystallization through immobilizing the moisture within the NADESs systems (T g : −58.6 °C ∼ −50.5 °C), endowing them with great potentials for interfacial anti-frosting. It is hoped that this work could broaden the field of bio-inspired anti-freezing materials in a greener and eco-friendly way.

Icing of water (moisture) at subzero temperatures with different length scales is harmful to a variety of applications spanning from large-scale aircraft to small camera lens. Existing strategies relying on controlling the surface structure and material are encumbered with shortcomings of short frost delay time, poor durability, and difficulty in large-scale production. Inspired from the mucus secretion of mollusks, we introduce organohydrogel dynamic interfaces that can perform dynamic and reversible exchange of the cryoprotectant and water at the interface, resulting in exceptional antifrosting, antiadhesion, and deicing properties with long-term durability. The replenishable coating shows superlubrication to the surface ice with a sliding angle up to 1.9 ± 0.4o and a frost delay time up to 970 ± 31 min in the presence of water spray (99% relative humidity) at subzero temperatures. The strategy offers a reliable and scalable solution to prevent engineering surfaces, i.e., aircraft, pavement, bridge, and other public facilities, from icing/frosting and ice adhesion, even under extreme cold environments.
