In geothermal drilling, the significant rheological deterioration of biopolymer drilling fluids can lead to decreased cutting-carrying efficiency and fluctuations in annulus pressure, which can easily result in unpredictable downhole accidents. To address the challenges, this study innovatively introduces temperature-sensitive monomers (NIPAM) and nanosilica into molecular chains based on temperature response effects and adsorption stability to counteract the negative effects of temperature and salt ions, aiming to develop a rheological agent (PNA-SiO2) that is resistant to high temperature and salt. The molecular structure and thermal stability of PNA-SiO2 were characterized by FT-IR and TGA, and it was demonstrated to have the stability of the molecular main chain within 317 °C. According to rheological and filtration studies, PNA-SiO2 effectively addresses the issues of high-temperature viscosity attenuation and a sharp rise in the filtration volume of bentonite mud by aggressively adsorbing, creating a stable thixotropic network, and enhancing molecular repulsion. After aging at 60–180 °C, the drilling fluid with 2–4% PNA-SiO2 has excellent rheology (AV ≥ 57.5 mPa·s, PV ≥ 42 mPa·s, Gel10 min ≥ 1.533 Pa) and filtration (FLAPI ≤ 9.6 mL) properties that fully satisfy API requirements. The H–B model is the preferred model to accurately describe the rheology behavior of PNA-SiO2 drilling fluids. Moreover, under the comprehensive influence of Na+ on the interlayer spacing of bentonite and the thickness of the diffusion bilayer, PNA-SiO2 has applicability in high-temperature saturated saline water. After aging at 150 °C and 5–36% NaCl, the PNA-SiO2 drilling fluid exhibits stable viscosity (AV ≥ 55 mPa·s, PV ≥ 44 mPa·s) and low filtration volume (≤9.6 mL). In conclusion, PNA-SiO2 is used as a rheological and fluid loss agent, offering a cost-effective solution to the technical issues of severe leakage and inadequate cutting-carrying capacity encountered by geothermal drilling, which enables the safe and quick exploration of geothermal resources.

An anionic polymer P (ANAN) of acrylamide, N -vinyl-2-pyrrolidone and 2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid was synthesized through free radical polymerization and initiated by 2,2′-Azobis (2-methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride as an anti-high temperature and anti-calcium and magnesium contamination fluid loss control additive for water-based drilling fluid. The P (ANAN) was characterized by 13 C-NMR and 1 H-NMR, FTIR, elemental analysis and GPC analysis. The fluid loss tests were carried on different WBDFs. The results showed that this polymer can resist 4.5 × 10 5 ppm of Cl −1 , 4 × 10 5 ppm of Ca 2+ contamination at low pH environment caused by acid gas invasion in drilling fluid at 180 °C. The fluid loss control mechanisms of P (ANAN) were investigated by Zeta potential analysis, particle size distribution analysis and mud cake quality analysis. The thermal stability was investigated by TGA analysis. The results illustrate that the P (ANAN) exhibits a stronger interaction with clays and higher-temperature resistance, and it can improve the colloidal dispersion property obviously for drilling fluid under salts, calcium and magnesium contamination and even under circumstances of acid gas invasion conditions. Due to its superior fluid loss control properties, the P (ANAN) can be a promising polymer for water-based drilling fluid in deep and ultra-deep well drilling applications.

In this work, we show how simple mixing of mineral clay materials and a biopolymer chitosan to afford hydrogel composites with significantly enhanced performances in instant mechanical recovery and self-healing, anti-high temperature and anti-high ionic strength activities. Benefited by the electrostatic attraction between anionic clay and cationic chitosan , molecular level coassembly was achieved, which gave rise to a robust and rapidly self-healable hydrogel. Synergistic effect between components enhanced the mechanical strength more than 10 folds and shortened the self-healable time more than 40 folds (from 220 s to less than 5 s). In addition, the binary hydrogel show extremely enhanced anti-temperature and ionic strength properties. This study offers a feasible and dramatically facile protocol to build functional hydrogel materials using commercially available mineral and biopolymer, which have promising applications in special areas such as underground oil and gas engineering.

Phase change materials (PCMs) hold promising potential for regulating asphalt pavement temperatures during the summer. To enhance the suitability of polyurethane-based solid–solid phase change materials (PUSSPCMs), this study focuses on optimizing their structure and performance. A series of PUSSPCMs were synthesized with varying soft-to-hard segment ratios and soft segment molecular weights. Their high-temperature leakage resistance, phase change behavior and thermal stability were systematically evaluated, to identify the optimal formulations. Subsequently, a SMA-13 phase change asphalt mixture incorporating a selected PUSSPCM was designed. The effect of the PUSSPCM, as a functional filler, on both the pavement and thermal properties of the mixture was evaluated. Results indicate that the PUSSPCM structure critically affects leakage resistance at elevated temperatures. Increasing the hard segment content significantly improves leakage resistance, enabling the PUSSPCM to maintain structural integrity during the high-temperature paving of phase change asphalt mixtures. A higher molecular weight of polyethylene glycol (PEG) requires a correspondingly higher proportion of hard segments for leakage prevention. An increase in PEG molecular weight or soft-to-hard segment ratio usually leads to elevated phase change temperature and enthalpy. Irrespective of the composition, PUSSPCMs can perform excellent volumetric, chemical, and phase transition stability during hot-mix asphalt construction. P8000–6 as a preferred PUSSPCM enhances high-temperature stability and low-temperature crack resistance, but reduces the moisture resistance of the asphalt mixture. The phase change asphalt mixture exhibits a reduced heating rate, maintaining a temperature difference of over 3 °C for up to 250 min, with a maximum difference of 3.7 °C. The addition of P8000–6 functional filler has minimal impact on the thermal conductivity of the asphalt mixture. However, it effectively moderates temperature fluctuations during heating by increasing the heat absorption capacity.
