Non-axially aligned ZrB2-SiC/ZrB2-SiC-graphene short fibrous monolithic ceramics with isotropic in-plane properties

Yehong Cheng,Yang Lyu,Shanbao Zhou,Wenbo Han

Although axially aligned fibrous monolithic ceramics have superior mechanical properties in ceramic fiber axial direction, the obvious anisotropy in physical and chemical properties of fibrous monolithic ceramics predetermine the significant on-axis and off-axis discrepancy. The existing ZrB 2 -based fibrous monolithic ceramics were all arranged by axially aligned ceramic fibers. Non-axially aligned ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene short fibrous monolithic ceramics with isotropic in-plane properties were fabricated by hot pressing of disorderly-arranged short ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene fibers to overcome in-plane anisotropy of the ZrB 2 -based fibrous monolithic ceramics. ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene short fibrous monolithic ceramics have remarkable increase in fracture toughness, critical crack size and work of fracture compared with ZrB 2 -SiC ceramics. The toughening mechanism of ZrB 2 -SiC/ZrB 2 -SiC-graphene short fibrous monolithic ceramics include macroscopic toughening of crack deflection, crack branching, interface friction and ZrB 2 -SiC cell extraction, and microscopic toughening of graphene bridging and pull-out.

Stab and yarn pull-out resistance of shear thickening fluids (STFs)/E-glass based on PEG modification and modeling yarn pull-out behavior with artificial intelligence

Tao Hai,Fahad Mohammed Alhomayani,Hussein Ajam,Ahmed S M Metwally

Impregnating fabrics with shear thickening fluid (STF) improves impact resistance. In this study modification of polyethylene glycol (PEG 200) was carried out to enhance the thickening behavior of STF. The rheological analysis shows tunned STFs by PEG modification with glutaric acid and oxalic acid increase the maximum viscosity by about 10.33 and 3.28 folds with respect to unmodified STF. Additionally, the alternations of a liquid dispersion medium (PEG) led to higher chain length in STFs, representing superior interaction between media and particles by profuse H-bonding. The results confirmed that increasing the molecular length of PEG-based on STF caused a significant improvement in the knife and spike stabbing impact resistance, quasi-static, and yarn pull-out performance of the neat fabric. In addition, it was realized, by increasing impact velocity the energy absorption ability of STF-treated fabric composite increases. Additionally, a regression analysis using artificial intelligence was applied to study the effect of the pull-out rate on the mechanical response of different materials. Using a third-order polynomial for AI regression model, it turned out that while the pull-out rate has the least influence on untreated E-glass fabrics (UEG) response, for other materials, the behavior changes significantly by increasing the rate from 100 to 400 mm/min.

Investigation of the preparation methods and mechanical properties of graphene nanoplatelets/α-SiC ceramic composites

Maohui Li,Mingjun Zhang,Bo Ma,Wenzhou Sun,Yanmin Wang,And Youjun Lu

While graphene is widely acknowledged for its potential in enhancing the toughness of ceramic composites, achieving substantial mechanical improvements through simple and scalable processing methods remains a challenge. This study demonstrates that minimal additions of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) can significantly enhance the fracture toughness of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics using pressureless sintering. The investigation focused on examining the influence of GNPs addition on the phase composition, porosity, mechanical properties, and microstructure of these composite ceramic materials. By incorporating only 1–3 wt.% GNPs into an α-SiC matrix, a remarkable 37.86% increase in fracture toughness (5.28 MPa·m1/2) is achieved at the optimal loading of 1 wt.%, surpassing the toughening efficiency typically reported for similar composite systems. Microstructural analysis revealed that the primary toughening mechanisms of GNPs in SiC involve pull-out and crack deflection. This study demonstrates GNPs combined with pressureless sintering can effectively unlock the toughness potential of SiC ceramics, providing a practical and scalable approach for industrial applications.

Chitosan/gelatin-tannic acid decorated porous tape suture with multifunctionality for tendon healing

Qian Zhang,Yansha Qiao,Chaojing Li,Jing Lin,Hui Han,Xiaoli Li,Jifu Mao,Fujun Wang,Lu Wang

The inferior tendon healing after surgery is inextricably linked to the surgical suture. Poor load transfer along the suture often results in a high tendon re-tear rate. Besides, the severe inflammation and infection induced by sutures even cause a second surgery. Herein, to alleviate the above-mentioned issues, a multifunctional suture was fabricated by decorating chitosan/gelatin-tannic acid (CS/GE-TA) on the porous tape suture. The porous tape suture ensured the required mechanical properties and sufficient space for tissue integration. Compared to the pristine suture, the CS/GE-TA decorated suture (TA100) presented a 332% increase in pull-out force from the tendon, indicating potentially decreased re-tear rates. Meanwhile, TA100 showed superior anti-inflammatory and antibacterial performances. In vivo experiments further proved that TA100 could not only reduce inflammatory action but also facilitate collagen deposition and blood vessel formation . These results indicate that the multifunctional sutures are promising candidates for accelerating tendon healing.

Behavior of hybrid natural fiber reinforced polymers bars under uniaxial tensile strength and pull-out loads with UHPC

Mohammed M. Attia,Mahmoud Malek Olwan,Essam Amoush,Shady Rizk Ragheb Hassan Aamer,M.A. Eita

This study evaluated the uniaxial tensile strength and bond performance of natural hybrid reinforcement bars. Hybrid FRP combines multiple fibers and matrixes, resulting in a desirable performance. Two types of hybrid bars were tested: one with natural fibers surrounded by glass fiber, and the other with a steel core surrounded by natural fiber and then glass fiber. Thirteen samples were used to assess tensile behavior, with four groups including glass fiber, flax, sisal, and jute fibers. Pull-out behavior testing was conducted on twelve samples, divided into four groups of fiberglass, flax, sisal, and jute. Each group used three types of concrete: normal, high strength, and ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC). The results refer to flax samples that had a higher tensile strength and elastic modulus of 143 MPa and 38 GPa, respectively, than samples made of sisal and jute fibres. The hybrid bars with a steel core exhibited a significant improvement in elastic modulus of 206 % in compared to samples made solely from glass, sisal, and jute fibers. On the other hand, the samples with UHPC showed the highest bond strength. The sample U-GFRP with ultra-high-performance concrete showed the highest bond strength 9.32 MPa, while the sample N-GFRP with normal concrete showed the lowest bond strength 5.87 MPa, respectively. However, this study suggests that hybridizing natural fibers can be a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic fibers.

The interface mechanical and ablative evolution behaviors under different heat flux of multiphase HfC-SiC matrix composites

Xinhao Shi,Liping Wang,Wanbo Hou,Jiahui Ding,Tao Feng,Hongjiao Lin,Mingde Tong

Multiphase HfC-SiC ceramic matrix composites were prepared by a combination process. The interface mechanics and ablation properties behaviors were investigated. Introducing the PyC-SiC interface, the composites showed a second-order pull-out mechanism. The mechanical failure model showed that fibers and matrix have different failure strain under load depending on the component that fails first. Moreover, the ablative airflow in the center area will spread to the edge area through the thermal shock microcracks generated. Increasing of the heat flux, the crack width gradually increased to be ditches. It accelerated the evolution of surface morphology, which showed HfC-SiC substrate was first transformed into Hf-Si-O solid solution on the process of phase transformation of oxidation products from 1680 ℃ to 2150 ℃, and eventually sintered into HfO 2 . The change in the morphology of oxidation product consumed more heat and protected the substrate from oxidation, resulting in improving the ablation resistance of composites.

Effects of different oxidation systems on the interfacial properties of bamboo fiber/epoxy resin composites

Runzi Ding,Xueying Liu,Haijiao Yu,Sheldon Q. Shi,Guangping Han,Wanli Cheng

The objective of this study was to improve the interfacial properties of bamboo fabric (BF)/epoxy (EP) composites and thus enhance their mechanical properties . BF was treated with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO) oxidation system and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) oxidation system, respectively, to obtain BFO- T and BFO- N oxidation products with different surface morphologies . The effects of different oxidation treatments on the tensile strength ( σ c ) and elongation at break ( ε c ) of the composites were evaluated. Compared with the untreated BF/EP samples, BFO- T/EP showed a 56.9% increase in σ c with a non-significant change in the increase in ε c . BFO- N/EP showed a 30.1% increase in σ c , but the improvement of ε c reached 473.7%. The results of single-yarn pull-out tests and atomic force microscopy indicated that the proper size of grooves may be the key to improve the strength of the two-phase interface. The larger size of the grooves, the easier it is for the resin to infiltrate and fill the voids, thus forming occlusal structures that strengthen the interfacial bonding. Small-sized grooves, on the other hand, are not conducive to resin impregnation and therefore voids at the two-phase interface, thus hindering load transfer.

Dual toughening mechanisms via PyC/BN interphases and SiC whiskers in CCf/SiC composites fabricated by NITE process

Zahoor Ahmad,Jianjun Chen,Hafsa,Zaheer Hussain,Muhammad Arfan,Tauseef Shahid,Fakhr e Alam

Chopped carbon fiber (CC f ) reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (CC f /SiC CMCs) hold potential as thermal structural materials. In this work, we investigated the impacts of dual protective interphases (pyrolytic carbon/boron nitride (PyC/BN)) deposited via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), along with the incorporation SiC whiskers (SiC w ) contents (20 wt%) on the structure and properties of as-fabricated CC f /SiC CMCs by NITE route. Structural and mechanical characteristics were explicated by the relevant advanced characterization tools. The introduction of PyC/BN dual protective interphase effectively preserved its integrity at elevated temperature and improved the toughness significantly via fiber pull-out and interfacial debonding mechanisms. Furthermore, incorporating 20 wt% SiC whiskers (SiCw) as secondary reinforcement yielded a synergistic toughening effect, promoting both the crack bridging and fiber pull-out behavior. This dual toughening mechanism led to a notable enhancement in mechanical performance, revealing an optimum bending strength of ∼356 ± 9.089 MPa, and toughness of ∼5.31 ± 0.194 MPa m 1/2 . Additionally, the inclusion of SiCw contributed to the creation of spatial network structure, potentially reducing the thermal expansion. The insights from this study advance the understanding of microstructural engineering in CC f /SiC composites, enabling future low-cost design and manufacturing of high-performance composites for extreme environments.

Lignin Biobased Eco-Friendly Dipping System for Polyimide Fiber and Its Interface Adhesive Mechanism with Rubber

Huaqing Li,Nan Tang,Jianing Cui,Haodong Yan,Shipeng Wen,Yan Shi,Weidong Wu

Fiber-reinforced rubber materials find extensive applications in tire manufacturing, hoses, conveyor belts, and various industrial sectors. Polyimide (PI) fibers offer superior fatigue resistance, tensile strength, modulus, and high-temperature durability compared to aramid fibers, positioning them as ideal substitutes in the belt layers of aircraft tire. To enhance the interfacial adhesion between polyimide fibers and rubber while minimizing the use of toxic and environmentally harmful materials, a novel eco-friendly carbon-reducing dipping system was devised. This system employs blocked diisocyanate and epoxy resin to activate PI fibers, and then uses a dipping solution, primarily composed of a blend of styrene–butadiene–vinylpyridine (VP) latex, lignin, tannic acid (TA), and glyoxal, to dip the fibers. This approach connects PI fibers and the rubber matrix through chemical bonds, thereby effectively enhancing the interfacial adhesion between the fibers and the rubber. The H pull-out force of the PI fiber cords treated by this system reached 179.6 N, with an average 180° peeling force of 14.7 N, and dynamic fatigue resistance exceeding 67,000 cycles, comparable to those achieved with the resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex (RFL) dipping system. These results indicate the efficacy of the developed system as a potential replacement for the RFL system. This research presents a sustainable and environmentally friendly approach to enhancing the interfacial adhesion of fiber-reinforced rubber composites, thereby contributing to the advancement of innovative high-performance fibers and biobased dipping system.

Synergistic interlaminar toughening and strengthening of CF/EP composites via migration-stable PES/CNTs films

Yi Xue,Zhuang Huang,Zehao Yang,Jiamei Luo,Yong Liu,Minqiang Jiang,Hui Zhang,Jianyong Yu

In this study, through a targeted experimental approach, polyethersulfone/carbon nanotubes (PES/CNTs) films with variable carbon nanotubes (CNTs) contents were fabricated by the phase inversion approach and employed in carbon fiber/epoxy (CF/EP) composites prepared by the vacuum-assisted resin infusion process to upgrade the toughness of composites. The dissolution of the PES/CNTs films in the epoxy resin was revealed to be controllable, which guaranteed a gradient distribution of polyethersulfone and CNTs between the layers. As observed, the CF/EP composites with PES/CNTs films containing 0.5 phr CNTs provided the optimized mode I fracture toughness with a 120.4% increase in G IC compared to the reference. Whereas, the G IIC of the composites with PES/CNTs film containing 1.0 phr CNTs was increased by 92.5%. Additionally, observation of the fracture surfaces of mode I and mode II specimens by scanning electron microscopy revealed that PES/CNTs films toughened CF/EP composites via three mechanisms: i) crack deflection and secondary microcracks initiation caused by polyethersulfone microspheres, ii) cracks bridging effect and pull-out from the epoxy matrix of CNTs and iii) CNTs distributed between epoxy matrix and polyethersulfone microsphere led to more energy consumption, which had a synergistic effect. This method overcomes the trade-off between toughness and stiffness in traditional interleaving methods, providing a new approach for the manufacturing of high-performance CF/EP composites.

Nanoscale analysis of the interface of dip layer/rubber in fiber/rubber composites

Bo Zhang,Songyue Liu,Lijie Yin,Ming Tian,Nanying Ning,Liqun Zhang,Wencai Wang

The reaction mechanism and the interfacial modulus gradient of the interfacial transition layer between the environmentally friendly dipping system (PAL) and the rubber have not been fully studied. In order to better understand the chemical structures and nano-mechanical properties of the interface between the dip layer and the rubber, we used advanced atomic force microscope (AFM) and nanoscale Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (nano-FTIR) to perform detailed analysis in this article. The characterization of interfacial nano-mechanical properties and chemical structures is very significant for the illustration of interfacial adhesion mechanism. AFM can effectively characterize the detailed interfacial modulus gradient and the thickness of interface, while nano-FTIR can comprehensively measure the interfacial chemical structures and the distribution of chemical bonds. The results suggest that the thickness of the interface between the PAL dip layer and the rubber matrix is 175 nm, and the crosslinking density of the interfacial layer is high, which explains that the failure location of fiber/rubber composites after pull-out tests occurs on the side of the rubber matrix. Similarly, the microstructure of resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex (RFL) system was also characterized, and the preparation of RFL usually requires carcinogenic and toxic substances such as formaldehyde and resorcinol .

Zwitterionic polymer functionalized polyetheretherketone biointerfaces enhance osseointegration and antibacterial through in situ inducing biomineralization

Maihemuti Yakufu,Qiyu Jia,Chuang Ma,Zongliang Wang,Chunbao Li,Peng Zhang,Muyashaer Abudushalamu,Sajida Akber,Li Shu,Li Yan,Xinghua Song

Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is increasingly recognized as a promising biomaterial for orthopedic implants due to its mechanical properties that are very similar to those of human bones. However, its inherent bioinertness still poses a challenge to effective osseointegration, and surface modification of PEEK implants often faces limitations such as multi-step complexity. In this study, we innovatively developed a dopamine-triggered one-step polymerization of 3-[(3-acrylamidopropyl)dimethylammonio] propanoate (PCBAA), which in situ induced biomineralization and constructed a functional PEEK biointerfaces, directly and effectively enhancing osseointegration and antibacterial effects. The successful immobilization of PCBAA on the surface of PEEK significantly enhanced osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells, as evidenced by the significant improvement in alkaline phosphatase activity and mineral deposition. Moreover, the functional biointerfaces exhibited substantialantibacterial efficacy in vitro. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histological evaluation of rat tibia implantation showed that compared to uncoated screws, the PCBAA-functionalized PEEK screws significantly enhanced new bone formation and possessed superior pull-out strength. The findings of this study suggest that the one-step polymerization of PCBAA coatings on PEEK substrates is facile and can efficiently overcome the limitations of current surface modification. The resultant PCBAA-coated PEEK biointerfaces have shown great promise in promoting osseointegration and mitigating postoperative infections for clinical outcomes of PEEK-based orthopedic implants.
