High quantum yield blue- and orange-emitting carbon dots: one-step microwave synthesis and applications as fluorescent films and in fingerprint and cellular imaging

Zhiqin Deng,Chang Liu,Yanzi Jin,Jianlin Pu,Bin Wang,Jiucun Chen

A high quantum yield (QY) is the key requirement for implementing carbon dots (CDs) in nearly all applications. In this work, blue emissive N-doped CDs with a QY of 83% and orange emissive N-doped CDs with a QY of 47% were successfully prepared using resorcinol and phloroglucin as carbon resources in formamide by one-step microwave synthesis, respectively. Formamide not only plays a role as the solvent but also takes part in the formation of the high QY CDs. It is demonstrated that the as-prepared blue- and orange-emitting N-doped CDs with a high QY can be uniformly dispersed into glue and be fabricated as CD/glue fluorescent composites for fluorescent films and fingerprint imaging. Furthermore, these CDs also show excellent cellular imaging capability.

Carbon dots for promoting the growth of ZIF-8 crystals to obtain fluorescent powders and their application for latent fingerprint imaging

Guangming Li,Xun Wang,Jilin Zhang

An environmentally friendly synthetic route for carbon dots/ZIF-8 fluorescent powders has been developed. It was found that the carbon dots can promote the growth of ZIF-8 crystals. The carbon dots/ZIF-8 fluorescent powders can be fabricated at a relatively low 2-methylimidazole/Zn2+ molar ratio (10 : 1) in aqueous solution at room temperature. Different morphologies and sizes of the carbon dots/ZIF-8 fluorescent powders are easily obtained by adjusting the 2-methylimidazole/Zn2+ molar ratio. The as-prepared carbon dots/ZIF-8 fluorescent powders can afford multi-colored imaging of latent fingerprints on different substrates and show great potential for latent fingerprint detection.

Solvothermal Treatment of Micron-Sized Commercial SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ Phosphors and One-Step Preparation of Nanophosphors for Fingerprint Imaging

Rungang Liu,Xueting Liu,Weikai Lin,Yingliang Liu

Preparing submicron and nanoscale phosphors with good optical properties for practical applications is a challenging task for current inorganic long afterglow luminescent materials. This study utilized commercialized SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+phosphors (SAOED) as raw materials and employed solvents with lower polarity or non-polar solvents for dynamic solvothermal treatment. The commercialized phosphor’s overall average particle size was reduced from 42.3 μm to 23.6 μm while maintaining the fluorescence intensity at 91.39% of the original sample. Additionally, the study demonstrated the applicability of the dynamic solvothermal method to most other commercialized inorganic phosphors. The experiment produced a high-brightness nano-sized phosphor with a yield of 5.64%. The average diameter of the phosphor was 85 nm, with an average thickness of 16 nm. The quantum efficiency of the phosphor was 74.46% of the original sample. The fingerprint imaging results suggest that the nano-sized phosphors have potential for practical applications.

Dual-emitting quantum dot nanohybrid for imaging of latent fingerprints: simultaneous identification of individuals and traffic light-type visualization of TNT

Peng Wu,Chaoying Xu,Xiandeng Hou,Jing-Juan Xu,Hong-Yuan Chen

Fingerprints are a unique characteristic of an individual. Recently, it has been realized that fingerprints carry more information about individuals than just their identity, for example, they may identify potential addicts and terrorists carrying explosives. Therefore, the development of imaging moieties capable of both fingerprint staining and drug/explosive visualization is of significant importance for forensic chemistry. Here we developed a nanohybrid comprising green- and red-emitting QDs for simultaneous fingerprint imaging and TNT visualization in fingerprints. The red-emitting Cu-doped ZnCdS (Cu–ZnCdS) QDs were embedded into silica nanoparticles and the green-emitting ZnCdS QDs were anchored onto the surface of the silica nanoparticles and further functionalized with polyallylamine (PAA). Both components of the nanohybrid, i.e., the PAA-functionalized green QDs and red QD-doped silica nanoparticles, could be explored for fingerprint imaging. Due to the formation of a Meisenheimer complex between TNT and PAA, the green-emitting QDs could be quenched by TNT, meanwhile the red-emitting QDs were inert. Therefore, the nanohybrid exhibited a traffic light-type fluorescence color change (green-yellow-red) to TNT concentration in the range of 40–400 μM. This method is promising for potential applications in security-screening needs in public areas such as airports and train stations.

Self-quenching-resistant fluorescent tunable sulfur quantum dots

Yueyan Zang,Jinxia Xu,Zhentong Lu,Chunhui Yi,Fanyong Yan

Fluorescence-tunable sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) were obtained by an assembly-fission process and assisted etching with H 2 O 2 . The morphological and structural characterization indicated that the obtained SQDs possess excellent dispersion, high water solubility and abundant surface functional groups, which is beneficial to its further application. In the Gaussian software, the electron cloud density distribution around the entire molecular structure is simulated and the density generalization calculations confirms that the main reason for the red shift of emission is the synergistic effect of SQDs size and surface states. Moreover, blue fluorescent SQDs (B-SQDs) showed high sensitivity and specific selectivity toward berberine hydrochloride with detection limits as low as 0.24 nM, and have been successfully used for water sample and actual drug detection. It is noteworthy that the solid-state luminescence properties of SQDs are mainly attributed to the adsorption of chain PEG on the surface of SQDs. By mixing SQDs with epoxy resin , dual-color fluorescent films were prepared and used as the fluorescence conversion layer to manufacture high-performance light-emitting diodes. The CIE (Commission Internationale d′Eclairage) coordinates of WLED is (0.27,0.29), CCT (Correlated color temperature) is 5793 K and CRI (Color rendering index) is 85.2. Moreover, the prepared SQDs are highly fluorescent and enable latent fingerprint imaging for identity recognition. This work has advanced the development of SQDs for analytical sensing, optical devices , and fingerprint imaging.

Flexible thermosensitive films based on shallow-trap persistent luminescence for high-resolution texture imaging of fingerprints even through latex gloves

Shenghui Zheng,Junpeng Shi,Xiaodan Wang,Xiaoyan Fu,Hongyong Fan,Hongwu Zhang

Here, we have developed a novel thermosensitive technique based on shallow-trap persistent luminescence to achieve high-resolution and long-duration texture imaging of fingerprints even through latex gloves. A thermosensitive flexible film that consists of a transparent silica gel embedded with a shallow-trap Bi2Ga4O9:Eu3+,Cr3+ (BGO) phosphor microarray exhibits broadband near-infrared PersL, which enables sensitive temperature sensing using a thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) method. The uniform surface conical arrays of the BGO film ensure a high thermal sensing resolution. Only a simple touch is enough to induce thermal distribution that can be easily visualized as luminescence using an EMCCD camera. Furthermore, the BGO film responds rapidly to small temperature fluctuations with high sensitivity (8.10 ± 0.476% K−1), enabling fingerprint imaging even through latex gloves in only a few seconds. This imaging strategy is very promising for sensitive temperature sensing without power supply, and it also opens new application opportunities for shallow-trap PersL materials.

Shape-controllable synthesis of silica coated core/shell upconversion nanomaterials and rapid imaging of latent fingerprints

Lijia Wang,Wenhong Gu,Zhengbin An,Qingyun Cai

Upconversion nanomaterials with complex morphologies have attracted considerable interests due to morphology-dependent properties. In this work, silica coated-NaYF 4 upconversion nanomaterials (NaYF 4 @SiO 2 ) of various shapes – nanorods, nanodumbbell and nanowire – were synthesized through controlling the ratio of NaYF 4 nanorods to silica. The nanodumbbell and nanowire morphologies showed much higher fluorescence efficiency than that of nanorod. These upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) exhibited a high signal-to-noise ratio, effectively circumvent luminescence quenching and excellent photo-stability under 980 nm excitation. In particular, the as-prepared nanodumbbells were successfully applied to rapid latent fingerprint imaging, showing advantages over commercial fluorescence reagents. Such nanoparticles with further modification are expected to have a great potential in forensic and biological sciences.

Zinc Germanate Nanophosphors with Persistent Luminescence for Multi-Mode Imaging of Latent Fingerprints

Dangli Gao,Feng Gao,Qingqing Kuang,Xiangyu Zhang,Zihan Zhang,Yong Pan,Ruipeng Chai,Huan Jiao

Fluorescence latent fingerprinting (LFP) imaging is a convenient and frequently used in situ detection technique. In recent years, various types of phosphors have been widely used for LFP imaging. However, traditional phosphor powders are suffering from a formidable challenge to design effective fluorescent LFP powders with low background interference and high detection sensitivity. In this work, we have synthesized Zn2GeO4:Mn,Li,K (ZGO:Mn,Li,K) nanophosphors with the high persistent luminescence (PersL) brightness and long duration using hydrothermal method by optimizing synthesis conditions. The ZGO:Mn,Li,K phosphors, with a perceptible green PersL, have been successfully used for developing LFPs on non-fluorescent substrate, fluorescent substrate, and PersL substrate without special equipment. Besides the level 1 and level 2 details, the other details of LFPs even exceeding level 3 details including the ridge width and boundary streamline of LFPs and the sweat pore feature are distinguishable. These findings show that the ZGO:Mn,Li,K phosphors, with multimode luminescence and high detection sensitivity, will promise a more sophisticated luminescent label for LFP detection on various substrates.

Fast Imaging of Eccrine Latent Fingerprints with Nontoxic Mn-Doped ZnS QDs

Chaoying Xu,Ronghui Zhou,Wenwei He,Lan Wu,Peng Wu,Xiandeng Hou

Fingerprints are unique characteristics of an individual, and their imaging and recognition is a top-priority task in forensic science. Fast LFP (latent fingerprint) acquirement can greatly help policemen in screening the potential criminal scenes and capturing fingerprint clues. Of the two major latent fingerprints (LFP), eccrine is expected to be more representative than sebaceous in LFP identification. Here we explored the heavy metal-free Mn-doped ZnS quantum dots (QDs) as a new imaging moiety for eccrine LFPs. To study the effects of different ligands on the LFP image quality, we prepared Mn-doped ZnS QDs with various surface-capping ligands using QDs synthesized in high-temperature organic media as starting material. The orange fluorescence emission from Mn-doped ZnS QDs clearly revealed the optical images of eccrine LFPs. Interestingly, N-acetyl-cysteine-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs could stain the eccrine LFPs in as fast as 5 s. Meanwhile, the levels 2 and 3 substructures of the fingerprints could also be simultaneously and clearly identified. While in the absence of QDs or without rubbing and stamping the finger onto foil, no fluorescent fingerprint images could be visualized. Besides fresh fingerprint, aged (5, 10, and 50 days), incomplete eccrine LFPs could also be successfully stained with N-acetyl-cysteine-capped Mn-doped ZnS QDs, demonstrating the analytical potential of this method in real world applications. The method was also robust for imaging of eccrine LFPs on a series of nonporous surfaces, such as aluminum foil, compact discs, glass, and black plastic bags.

A copper-bridged fluorescent sensor for sequential detection of Cu2+ and TKX-50: Synthesis, mechanism, and applications

Junli Shi,Yongzheng Liu,Yuqi Wu,Yuxin Miao,Xianping Xin,Fanfan Shen,Linxiu Zhao,Duanlin Cao,Shengling Li

Background 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50), known as a novel explosive, is characterized by its high energy and low sensibility. It is a preferred explosive for criminals to carry out illegal attacks, posing a significant security risk. Therefore, the development of an efficient and highly specific detection method for TKX-50 is of significant practical importance. Fluorescent chemical sensors have demonstrated tremendous potential in explosive detection due to their high sensitivity, rapid response, and visual detection capabilities. Results A novel fluorescent chemical sensor N’-((E)-5-((E)-2-(3-(dicyanomethylene)-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-1-en- 1-yl )vinyl)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-7-(diethylamino)-2-oxo-2H-chromene-3-carbohydrazide ( EXF ) was designed and synthesized, and its structure was characterized by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and HRMS. The sensor can achieve continuous and specific detection of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 through the ‘on-off-on’ fluorescence response. The EXF achieved a detection limit of 0.0968 μM for Cu 2+ . The complex [ EXF -Cu 2+ ] could specifically identify the novel explosive TKX-50 among a variety of explosives tested, with a detection limit of 0.0648 μM. In this study, the qualitative detection of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 was carried out using test strips, and the quantitative determination of Cu 2+ and TKX-50 in real water samples was successfully achieved based on the standard curve of a smartphone. Additionally, EXF can be used for the visualization of latent fingerprints (LFPs), demonstrating its potential application in the field of criminal investigations. The application of EXF for Cu 2+ and TKX-50 imaging in living cells is also demonstrated. Significance The fluorescent sensor EXF establishes a connection between explosive detection and ion sensing by utilizing Cu 2+ as a “bridge”. This research not only provides innovative explosive detection technologies, but also offers valuable design principles for multifunctional fluorescent sensors. The test strips and smartphone platform have preliminarily achieved on-site rapid qualitative and quantitative detection. And the LFPs imaging and detection in living cells further expand the application field, which has significant practical application value.

Time-Gated Imaging of Latent Fingerprints with Level 3 Details Achieved by Persistent Luminescent Fluoride Nanoparticles

Wenjing Chen,Yifan Song,Wenxing Zhang,Renren Deng,Yixi Zhuang,Rong-Jun Xie

The discovery of X-ray-charged persistent luminescence (PersL) in fluoride nanoparticles enables these materials to emit photons without real-time excitation, which provides a great possibility for the development of new luminescent nanotechnologies. In this work, we developed NaLuF4:Mn nanoparticles with intense green PersL and functionalized surfaces and accordingly achieved time-gated imaging of latent fingerprints (LFPs) with Level 3 details. These surface-modified NaLuF4:Mn nanoparticles exhibited near-spherical morphology, long-lasting emission for several hours, appropriate trap depth distribution, and tight chemical bonding with amino acids from fingerprints, thus greatly improving the accuracy of LFP imaging in a variety of environments. The developed NaLuF4:Mn PersL nanoparticles are expected to find broad applications in the fields of LFP imaging and in vivo biological imaging.
