Preparation and Application of a Sulfur-Doped Fluorescent Carbon Dots with Aggregation-Induced Emission Character

Ning Kefan,Ma Xinhuan,Wang Xinyao,Cui Shiqiang,Pu Shouzhi

As a new type of zero-dimensional nanomaterial, carbon dots are widely applied in various fields. However, most of the carbon dots have aggregation fluorescence quenching properties, which limited their practical applications. In this study, a novel sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs) was prepared by solvothermal method. The properties of the S-CDs in ethanol solution and in solid state were investigated respectively. The results showed that the S-CDs have an excited wavelength dependent emission of blue fluorescence in ethanol solution, and have orange fluorescence emission in solid state and composite films, indicating the prepared S-CDs has aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance. The main reason was that the presence of S-S bonds and the intramolecular rotation of aromatic rings were limited in solid state, resulting in its emission of orange fluorescence. Furthermore, the S-CDs could be applied to identify fingerprints, anti-counterfeiting.

Facile one-step synthesis of multifunctional carbon dots for rapid fingerprint recognition, information encryption, and Fe3+ ion detection

Zhi-Wei Pan,Qiao-Qiao He,Ting-Ting Du,Yu-Dan Deng,QinMei Zhong,Qiang Liu,Wen-Jing Yi

Fingerprint recognition plays a crucial role due to its uniqueness. However, conventional detection methods suffer from significant drawbacks, including high consumption, health risk and sample contamination, which restrict their practical application in the crime investigations and forensic analysis. This necessitates the development of simple, rapid, safe and environmentally-friendly alternative methods for fingerprints detection. In this work, we report the synthesis of novel cyan-emitting carbon dots (CDs) via a facile one-step hydrothermal reaction using polyethyleneimine and coumarin as precursors. The CDs enabled the clear visualization of fingerprint patterns on various substrates through immersion and spraying methods with pure water solutions, without the need for any cosolvents. Level 2 and level 3 details of fingermarks were evidently visible for individual identification within a short exposure time under 365 nm UV light irradiation. Additionally, fluorescent 3D fingerprint images revealed direct and specific evidence regarding pressing habits. Interestingly, the fluorescence intensity of CDs was tunable by adjusting the pH. We further fabricated invisible CDs ink for information encryption and decryption via UV irradiation and acid/alkali treatment. Moreover, CDs have the specific ability to sense Fe 3+ ions in actual water samples, with a detection limit of 0.613 μM and a linear range of 0–27 μM. We conducted an in-depth study on the fluorescence quenching mechanism of CDs caused by Fe 3+ ions, proposing a plausible mechanism based on a synergistic effect of dynamic quenching, static quenching and inner filter effect. Therefore, this study provides a promising multifunctional nanomaterial for fingerprint recognition, data encryption, and Fe 3+ detection.

Cascade energy transfer endows phosphorescent carbon dots-based films with tunable and broadband afterglow for fingerprint recognition and anticounterfeiting

Zhanpeng Liu,Xiangbo Ding,Lin Cai,Yihan Jia,Xia Ran,Zhongzheng Guo,Dan Mo,Yatao Pan,Lijun Guo

Room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) carbon dots (CDs) have attracted extensive attention due to their afterglow properties and promising potential in optical information and encryption fields. However, achieving tunable and broadband RTP CDs-based afterglow materials remains a great challenge for practical applications. Herein, we constructed broadly tunable afterglow CDs-based hybrid systems by employing cascade Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) for fingerprint recognition and anticounterfeiting. The as-prepared CDs composites exhibit excellent green RTP properties with a quantum yield of 21.7 % and a lifetime of 1.05 s. Combination of the RTP CDs as the energy donor and Sulforhodamine 101 (SR101), Rhodamine B or Rhodamine 6G as the acceptor in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, the afterglow spectrum of RTP CDs/dye/PVA film is markedly extended to the red region through an efficient triplet-singlet FRET. The sequential incorporation of SR101 and Oxazine 170 with RTP CDs further broadens the afterglow spectrum of CDs/SR101/Oxazine170/PVA film covering from green to near-infrared regions due to the cascade relayed FRET. The flexible FRET configuration of highly emissive RTP CDs with various dye acceptors endows the CDs/dyes/PVA hybrid films with tunable color and broadband afterglow properties for fingerprint recognition and anticounterfeiting applications.

Ultralong afterglow of heavy-atom-free carbon dots with a phosphorescence lifetime of up to 3.7 s for encryption and fingerprinting description

Xinlei Zhang,Xia Liu,Peng Liu,Bohan Li,Yan Xu

Metal-free room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials with changeable colors have attracted great attention in anti-counterfeiting information encryption. Most ultralong-lifetime RTP (URTP) luminophores are traditionally obtained through heavy atom effects via enhancing the spin–orbit coupling efficiency. Here, we report the self-assembly of URTP carbon dots (CDs) using diphenylaminourea as the precursor through a thermal-evaporation assisted covalent-binding approach in the presence of boric acid (BA). The BA-functionalized diphenylaminourea-derived CDs (denoted as D-CDs1.5/BA composites) show a rigid network structure with B–C linkages connected to the surface of the CDs, which can effectively suppress the free vibration of CDs to promote intersystem crossover, finally resulting in an excellent URTP afterglow performance. They feature a low singlet–triplet energy gap and reduced nonradiative attenuation properties. As a result, the D-CDs1.5/BA composites exhibit a bifunctional fluorescence/phosphorescence performance with a high phosphorescence quantum efficiency (12.67%) and an ultra-long green afterglow phosphorescence lifetime of up to 3.66 s. A high-level information encryption and fingerprinting description based on the URTP D-CDs1.5/BA composites were then investigated. This work contributes to the feasible design and preparation of novel URTP CD materials with both ultra-long afterglow and a high phosphorescence efficiency, making them promising candidates for advanced anti-counterfeiting applications.

H2O brace molecules to slip stack: Transform ACQ to AIE for latent fingerprints recognition

Bingyan Han,Dan Li,Xiangshan Lei,Qingdong Liu,Yajun Chen,Qifang Yan,Jiao Wang,Gaohong He

Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials have received a lot of attention in recent years, however, it remains a great challenge to develop a facile method for the conversion of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) molecules to AIE. In this paper, the ACQ molecule, 3,5-diacetyl-1,4-dihydro-2,6-lutidine (DDL), is successfully transformed from face-to-face stacking to slip stacking under the induction of H 2 O, achieving the transformation of ACQ molecule to AIE. Experimental analysis and theoretical calculations show that H 2 O is inserted into DDL molecules through hydrogen bonds, and its spatial configuration makes an angle between the H 2 O and DDL planes, thus increasing the horizontal and vertical distances between adjacent DDL molecules, so that DDL is arranged in a slip stacking pattern. Meanwhile, hydrogen bonds fix the DDL molecules in a relatively rigid structure, leading to the generation of other weak interactions, which further restrict the molecular motion and reduce the non-radiative transitions, so that the DDL possesses the AIE property, and the quantum yield increases from 0.95 % to 25.60 %. Based on the high fluorescence intensity of DDL-H 2 O, it has been successfully applied to the first-, second- and tertiary-level structures of latent fingerprints (LFPs) identification, which provides more possibilities for the practical application of ACQ molecules.

Hour-Level Persistent Multicolor Phosphorescence Enabled by Carbon Dot-Based Nanocomposites Through a Multi-Confinement-Based Approach

Huajiang Hu,Jiurong Li,Xiao Gong

Hour-level persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) phenomena based on multi-confinement carbon dots (CDs) are reported. The CDs-based system reported here (named Si-CDs@B 2 O 3 ) can be efficiently synthesized by a simple pyrolysis method compared to the established persistent RTP systems. The binding modes of CDs, silica (SiO 2 ), and boron oxide (B 2 O 3 ) are deduced from a series of characterizations including XRD, FT-IR, and TEM characterization. Further studies show that the formation of covalent bonds between B 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , and CDs play a key role in activating the persistent RTP and preventing its quenching. This is a rare example of a persistent RTP system that exhibits hourly persistent RTP under environmental conditions. Finally, the applications of Si-CDs@B 2 O 3 are demonstrated for anti-counterfeiting, long-duration phosphorescence imaging, and fingerprinting. This synthetic strategy is expected to provide strong technical support for the preparation of persistent RTP CDs and pave the way for the synthesis of persistent RTP CDs in the future.

Quantitative isotopic fingerprinting of thallium associated with potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in fluvial sediment cores with multiple anthropogenic sources

Juan Liu,Yuchen Zhou,Jingye She,Daniel C.W. Tsang,Holger Lippold,Jin Wang,Yanjun Jiang,Xudong Wei,Wenhuan Yuan,Xuwen Luo,Shuijing Zhai,Lan Song

Thallium (Tl) is a dispersed trace metal showing remarkable toxicity. Various anthropogenic activities may generate Tl contamination in river sediments , posing tremendous risks to aquatic life and human health. This paper aimed to provide insight into the vertical distribution, risk assessment and source tracing of Tl and other potentially toxic elements (PTEs) (lead, cadmium, zinc and copper) in three representative sediment cores from a riverine catchment impacted by multiple anthropogenic activities (such as steel-making and Pb–Zn smelting). The results showed high accumulations of Tl combined with associated PTEs in the depth profiles. Calculations according to three risk assessment methods by enrichment factor ( EF ), geoaccumulation index ( I geo ) and the potential ecological risk index ( PERI ) all indicated a significant contamination by Tl in all the sediments. Furthermore, lead isotopes were analyzed to fingerprint the contamination sources and to calculate their quantitative contributions to the sediments using the IsoSource software. The results indicated that a steel-making plant was the most important contamination source (∼56%), followed by a Pb–Zn smelter (∼20%). The natural parental bedrock was found to contribute ∼24%. The findings highlight the importance of including multiple anthropogenic sources for quantitative fingerprinting of Tl and related metals by the lead isotopic approach in complicated environmental systems.

Electrospun fluorescein-embedded nanofibers towards fingerprint recognition and luminescent patterns

Juan Wei,Shengyang Yang,Lifang Wang,Cai-Feng Wang,Li Chen,Su Chen

We report the fabrication of composite nanofiber mats of poly(lactic acid)/poly(glycidyl methacrylate)/fluorescein [(PLA)/(PGMA)/fluorescein] hybrids via an electrospinning route. Initially, PGMA with low molecular weight was synthesized by free radical polymerization. Then the fluorescent electrospun nanofiber mats were fabricated from the blending of fluorescein and PLA/PGMA in methylene chloride/N,N′-dimethylformamide solution. The influences of the reagent proportions and electrospinning parameters on the morphology of the nanofibers were thoroughly investigated. The as-prepared electrospun fibrous mats showed favorable fluorescence, which meant that the mats could be used in fingerprint recognition and silk-screen printing, as well as amine analysis. This facile method may find potential applications in forensic investigation, reactive microchips and medical diagnostics.

Crystalline-Induced Luminescence of Carbon Dots for the WLED and Fingerprint Recognition

Junchao Cui,Zhenxing Qin,Jingjing Bai,Yufei Zhang,Xuewen Zhang,Runze Miao

It is profound to obtain simply carbon nanodots (CDots)-based solid-state fluorescent in photoelectric field. However, synthesizing such material is still faced with a challenge due to the serious quenching effect. Here, a microwave pyrolytic route is reported to rapidly synthesize sulfur (S) and nitrogen (N) co-doping CDots wrapped by the crystalline phthalate (CDots/PA). The results show that CDots/PA presents needle-like crystal to coat abundant cluster of CDots inside, after fully optimizing the preparation conditions. The solid state CDots/PA emits a dazzling fluorescence with the fluorescence quantum yield (FLQY) = 1 7 %, which is attributed to the formation of barrier from the crystal to avoid the aggregation of CDots. In addition, due to the co-doping of S and N elements, it also presents an orange–red light with a multipeak feature. The excellent photoluminescence (PL) property of CDots/PA gives it an advantage to fabricate light emitting diode (LED)/white light emitting diode (WLED) devices, which achieves an orange light with the correlated color temperature ( CCT ) = 1 8 1 0 K, color rendering index ( CRI ) = 5 9 and a warm-white light with the CCT ≈ 3700 K, CRI ≈ 82 at the Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage ( CIE ) = ( 0 . 4 3 , 0.40) combined with the commercial phosphors. Moreover, CDots/PA also shows an excellent recognition capacity in the application of detecting latent fingerprints, endowing such fluorescent nanomaterials broad prospect in the photoelectric industry.

Novel organic–inorganic hybrid powder SrGa12O19:Mn2+–ethyl cellulose for efficient latent fingerprint recognition via time-gated fluorescence

Jun'an Lai,Zhangwen Long,Jianbei Qiu,Dacheng Zhou,Qi Wang,Yong Yang,Songhan Hu,Zhe Wang,Ke Zhang

Latent fingerprints (LFPs) are important evidence in crime scenes and forensic investigations, but they are invisible to the naked eye. In this work, a novel fluorescent probe was developed by integrating a narrow-band-emitting green afterglow phosphor, SrGa12O19:Mn2+ (SGO:Mn), and ethyl cellulose (EC) for the efficient visualization of LFPs. The hydrophobic interactions between the powder and lipid-rich LFPs made the ridge structures more defined and easily identifiable. The background fluorescence of the substrates was completely avoided because of the time-gated fluorescence of the afterglow phosphor. All the three levels of LFP degrees were clearly imaged due to the high sensitivity. Moreover, the SGO:Mn–EC powder was highly stable in neutral, acidic, and alkaline environments. In addition, 60 day-aged LFPs were successfully visualized by the powder. All performances showed that this strategy for LFP recognition has merits such as low cost, non-destructive nature, reliability, superior universality, and legible details. Together, these results show the great application prospects of this powder in forensic identification and criminal investigation.

Advanced SERSome-Based Artificial-Intelligence Technology for Identifying Medicinal and Edible Homologs

Shuang Jiang,Yue Zhao,Qingyu Meng,Rongheng Ma,Xiaomeng Sun,Xiaoming Lyu,Li Zhang,Guangrun Wu,Xiaotong Wang,Yiyang He,Jiayue Liang,Yuxin Qiao,Zhibin Wang,Yanli Wu,Jing Wu,Chunjuan Yang,Huimin Yu,Yang Li

Medicinal and edible homologs (MEHs) offer significant preventive and therapeutic benefits for various diseases and health functions. However, the widespread application of MEHs faces significant challenges, particularly in quality control, rapid identification, and authentication. In this study, we present a novel approach that combines surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) based on spectral set, referred to as “SERSome”, with deep learning to develop an identification model for analyzing MEHs. The platform uses silver nanoparticles prepared via reduction with NaBH 4 , activation with sodium borohydride, and aggregation with calcium ions. The method avoids the use of additional protective agents during the reaction process, thereby reducing interference from the protective agents and other materials. Additionally, the method also overcomes the fluorescence interference from MEHs. SERSomes provide comprehensive molecular fingerprint recognition, significantly enhancing the system's detection accuracy. The introduction of Ca 2+ as aggregator promotes the aggregation of silver nanoparticle, significantly enhancing the electromagnetic field of the nanoparticle system. The study achieves up to 98% accuracy in identifying specific MEHs. The integration of SERSomes with deep learning offers a promising methodology for the rapid and modern detection of MEHs, advancing the MEHs industry and contributing to the protection of human health.

H2O rapidly constructs hydrogen bond networks to reinforce AIE of copper clusters: Fluorescence discoloration and enhanced behavior for alcohol content detection and latent fingerprints recognition

Bingyan Han,Yajun Chen,Qingdong Liu,Yuncong Gao,Jiao Wang,Haiyan Liu,Gaohong He

Aggregation-induced emission enhancement is one of the main methods for designing copper clusters (CuNCs) with high fluorescence intensity. In this study, H 2 O can rapidly construct stable hydrogen bonds with 2-thiobarbituric acid ligands of CuNCs, leading to denser aggregation between CuNCs. This process can occur at a level of intensity visible to the naked eye and can be completed within 30 s. As a result, the fluorescence turns to yellow with emission wavelength at 573 nm from red with emission wavelength at 638 nm, and the quantum yield has been increased to 50.03 %. The noticeable “turn on” phenomenon can be utilized for detecting alcohol content in low-alcohol liquor quality control. Additionally, bright luminous make Y-CuNCs can be employed for accurate identification of human latent fingerprints (LFPs), which can accurately identify the third level structure of the LFPs.
