Presently, piezoelectric materials are gradually playing a significant role within composites to improve the damping and vibrational attenuation capacities of host composites. Previous studies paid attention to isolating the mechanical damping contribution and piezoelectric contribution of polymer-based piezoelectric composites (PPCs). However, reports detailing the piezoelectric damping of such materials have not paid sufficient attention to the technologies and methods to improve the piezoelectric damping of PPCs. In this study, we propose novel damping polyurethane (PU)-based piezoelectric composites with carbon-coated piezoelectric fillers (PZT@C/PU) with improved piezoelectric damping ability. The mechanical damping and piezoelectric damping of composites were theoretically decoupled, and we elaborate on the mechanism enhancing piezoelectric damping through the carbon coating strategy by comparing with the composites with nonpiezoelectric fillers. The as-fabricated core–shell structure having an optimized interface exhibits the proposed PZT@C/PU composite pads with relatively prominent damping ability (loss factor tan δmax = 1.0, tan δRT = 0.3), ductility (400.63%), and sound isolating behavior (transmission loss TL > 23 dB). Moreover, the vibration test results of as-fabricated sandwich structural PZT@C/PU composite damping devices exhibit outstanding vibration attenuating behavior (damping ratio ζ = 0.198). The study herein validates that the carbon shell coated on piezoelectric fillers would effectively increase damping performance of PU-based piezoelectric composites by the enhancement of piezoelectric performance caused by carbon coating piezoelectric fillers, which indicates that this material has potential for future applications in the field of vibration and noise reduction, thereby driving forward and expanding the fundamental understanding in the area of PPCs damping and vibration attenuation.

The “Brick-and-Mortar” structure endows the nacre outstanding abilities of dissipating kinetic energy, attenuating stress wave and keeping high mechanical strength. However, current artificial bio-inspired materials, such as the materials with unit structure arranged in an ordered hierarchy at merely one dimension, have yet to achieve desirable damping and mechanical behavior under monotonous damping mechanisms. Herein, the nacre-like structure, conductive network, and nano piezoelectric thin film are synergistically combined in multidimension to enhance the damping and vibration attenuating behavior by different mechanisms. The continuous piezoelectric composites with nacre-like lamellar structure demonstrates superior damping property. By introducing a conductive network, piezoelectric damping is enabled, and the damping behavior is further promoted, achieving a maximum loss factor of 1.19 and tanδ area value of 34.28. The nacre-like structure in macro dimension offers the framework of PZT thin film in nano dimension, and the conductive network in micro dimension stimulates the continuous piezoelectric damping, in which the contribution of each dimension is decoupled. Based on this finding, the vibration attenuating behavior is evaluated by cantilever beam vibration test where the composites lower 26.2 dB and damping ratio increase by 95%, which are greatly demanded for many damping applications including watercraft structures and aerospace scaffold.

This work reported a biomimetic shear thickening fluid (STF) with thermally enhanced shear thickening effect for smart vibration attenuation system. It was developed by introducing Zr–fumarate metal-organic framework (MOF) crystals into a solvent mixture comprised of polyethylene glycol , polyacrylic acid and Ca 2+ , which endowed it with the cooperative effect of electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions . As the temperature raised from 25 to 35 °C, the STF containing 55 vol% MOF (STF-55) yielded a favorable shear thickening reinforcement with a notable viscosity growth of 1760-7953 Pa s. Besides, its storage modulus increased from 14 to 3036 Pa at 25–55 °C under a 0.1 Hz shear frequency, revealing a significant improvement in mechanical performance, as also demonstrated by transient shear rheological experiments. STF was incorporated into sandwich structures to improve the damping performance, with the natural frequency and damping ratio investigated at various ambient temperatures. Since the thermal enhanced viscosity could promote energy dissipation , the damping ratio of STF-55 filled sandwich structure obtained a substantial improvement from 0.85% to 1.93% at 25–55 °C. Thus, STF-55 based turbine blade and building damping pile were fabricated, which not only reduced the external vibration stimuli with average responsive accelerations of 7.3 and 0.8 m 2 s -1 , but also presented attenuated levels of 6.9 and 0.6 m 2 s -1 at increasing temperatures, respectively. In conclusion, this work provided guiding approach for highly adaptive vibration attenuation at high-temperature environment.
