Household coal combustion is identified to be the second largest emission source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in China. In this study, ferroferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) was used as a coal burning additive to reduce PAHs emission from coal combustion in a household coal stove. The results showed that Fe 3 O 4 participated in the coal combustion process. The addition of Fe 3 O 4 reduced the release of PAHs during the coal combustion process, and could improve the residence capacity of ash residue to these PAHs. Toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) of PAHs in flue gas from combustion of coal mixed with Fe 3 O 4 was less than that from the raw coal combustion. For a typical combustion temperature of 850 °C, the TEQ of PAHs for the mixture of coal and 2.0 wt % Fe 3 O 4 decreased 21.98% compared to that for the raw coal. The abundant active surface oxygen species originated from the phase transformation of iron oxides probably accelerated the cracking of PAHs, and hence led to the reduction of PAH emissions and their TEQ. The study could help to develop new technology for reduction of PAHs emission from household coal combustion.

Selenium (Se) is one of the hazardous trace elements emitted from coal-fired power plants. The Se migration behavior in wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) slurry is still unclear, and the species of Se in FGD gypsum remains controversial. In this research, the bubbling experiments using simulated slurry with/without gypsum crystallization process were conducted. The experimental results indicated that pure gypsum has poor capability to capture Se components, and only selenite could be trapped in gypsum during its crystal growth stage. Furthermore, the DFT calculation was conducted to provide the microscopic information of Se adsorption and substitution characteristics during gypsum crystallization process. The research findings of this study could help understand the mechanism of Se migration process in FGD slurry, and facilitate the development of effective Se emission control technologies in the future.

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3 has been widely used for NOx emission control, but commercial catalysts inevitably suffer severe deactivation in SO2-containing stack gases at low temperatures because the ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4, ABS) formed in SCR blocks the surface active sites. We resolve this issue by developing a TiO2-supported single-atom Mo catalyst (Mo1/TiO2) that decomposes ABS at ∼225 °C, far lower than the dew point of ABS (∼260 °C). Single Mo atoms paired with the neighboring surface Ti atoms function as Mo–Ti acid–base dual sites, which respectively adsorb the NH4+ and HSO4− of ABS. After the oxidation of NH4+ by surface lattice oxygen on the Mo sites, electrons left behind on the dual sites are localized around the Fermi level, which allows them to transfer to the adsorbed HSO4− on the Ti sites, thus releasing SO2 at low temperatures. The Mo1/TiO2 catalyst with Mo–Ti acid–base dual sites enables the decomposition of ABS at low temperatures, and thus this work provides a way to effectively control NOx emission particularly from industrial boilers.

Food to microorganisms (F/M) ratio is one of the most important factors affecting microbial growth and pollutant removal in biological wastewater treatment system. For stability of aerobic granular process, optimal range of F/M ratio and a maneuverable F/M ratio control method via quantitative sludge discharge were investigated in this study. Results showed that stable aerobic granules were achieved with good settleability, high pollutant removal efficiency and microbial diversity when F/M ratio was controlled at 0.4–0.5 gCOD/gSS d. In addition, a maneuverable F/M ratio control method via quantitative sludge discharge was developed to verify the feasibility for optimization of F/M ratio. By this method, aerobic granules cultivated with the F/M ratio of 0.4 ± 0.02 gCOD/gSS d had better pollutant removal performance and stable structure with higher protein-like components in EPS. This study further revealed the importance of F/M ratio in the stability of aerobic granular sludge process.

Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) nonwoven filters are extensively utilized in industrial filtration processes because of their exceptional resistance to solvents and cost-effectiveness. However, the high temperature exhaust gases with strong oxidation can irreversibly corrode PPS nonwovens, and thus reduce their service life. Here, an oxidation-modified PPS (OPPS) nonwoven is reported that assembles excellent oxidation and high temperature resistance to achieve separation and filtration under extreme conditions. This OPPS nonwoven is resistant to oxidizing acid solutions and high temperatures up to 350 °C. In addition, the OPPS nonwoven does not melt when burned in a flame. Practical application tests demonstrated that the PM10–2.5 filtration efficiency of OPPS nonwoven reaches 90.4%, which is 20% higher than that of PPS nonwoven. Impressively, the OPPS nonwoven enables a PM10–2.5 filtration efficiency of 92.5% and 94.6% even after aging by 60% HNO3 solution and 350 °C, respectively. The cost-effectiveness and high performance of OPPS nonwoven present substantial advantages for flame retardant, thermal insulation, and dust filtration applications.

CeO 2 , a pivotal rare earth oxide in environmental catalysis, has garnered extensive interest for soot oxidation owing to its exceptional oxygen storage capacity and oxygen vacancy-rich surfaces. To further optimize catalytic efficiency, we engineered spherical CeO 2 with exposed (111) facets via hydrothermal synthesis and uniformly anchored Pd species through a gas bubbling-assisted membrane reduction (GBMR) strategy. The formation of Pd–O–Ce interfacial units is identified as critical active sites, where metal-support interaction (MSI) significantly enhances oxygen transfer. Notably, the Pd 1.0 /CeO 2 catalyst achieves a remarkable T 50 of 356 °C (14% lower than pristine CeO 2 ), attributed to highly dispersed Pd species and abundant Pd–O–Ce interfaces. In contrast, excessive Pd species loading induces particle agglomeration, weakening MSI effect and catalytic performance. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) and density functional thoery (DFT) calculations reveal that the Pd–O–Ce interface promotes NO adsorption – the rate limiting step – by generating electron-rich Pd sites and oxygen vacancies, thereby accelerating NO-to-NO 2 conversion and subsequent soot oxidation. This work highlights the pivotal role of interfacial engineering in optimizing Pd–CeO 2 catalysts, offering a rational design strategy for high-performance soot oxidation systems in diesel emission control.
