Ruina Liu,Siming Zhao,Xueke Wu,Zhuojing Zhao,Kangkang Wang,Zhenyu Guo,Aike Xi,Fan Lan,Run Li,Ruihong Liu,Mengzhu Ma,Yonglu Zang,Fei Wang,Qinyuan Jiang,Yunrui Li,Pei Lyu,Rufan Zhang

Radiative cooling is an emerging zero-energy-consumption technology for human body cooling in outdoor scenarios during hot seasons. However, existing radiative cooling textiles are limited by low intrinsic cooling power, high hydrophobicity, and heat-insulating properties, which seriously impede a satisfying cooling effect, perspiration-wicking, and heat dissipation, thus limiting human thermal comfort in practical situations. Here, we developed a radiative cooling meta-fabric that was integrated with high perspiration-wicking and thermal conduction capacity. The meta-fabric included a polyoxymethylene (POM) nanotextile on the front side as a selective radiative emitter, a skin-friendly silicone on the reverse side as a thermal conductor, and patterned bamboo yarns (a cellulose fiber derived from bamboo with excellent hydrophilicity) as the water transport channels. As a result, the meta-fabric could rapidly wick away perspiration (within seconds) and had a high thermal conductivity of 1.5 W/(m·K), exhibiting high-performance human body cooling with a temperature of 10.9 °C lower than the meta-fabric without perspiration. Besides, even without perspiration, the meta-fabric still exhibited a temperature of 9.6 °C lower than commercial cotton fabrics. The work provides an alternative method to design smart textiles for personal thermal management in real applications.

Durable Moisture-wicking and Fast-dry Polyester Fabric Prepared by UV-induced Click Reaction

Liu Jiajia,Wang Wei,Yu Dan,Zhao Kai

Polyester (PET) fabric is an important fabric to make sportswear due to its good mechanical strength, wear resistance and low cost, but poor hygroscopicity will accumulate moisture and excessive heat of human body which thereby causing thermo-physiological dicomfort. To obtain satisfying moisture-wicking, hydroscopic and fast-dry properties, facile and efficient single-sided click chemistry was used to substitute traditional methods. Firstly, PET fabric was alkali treated and modified with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane to obtain thiol groups. Then it was gradiently grafted with potassium 3-sulfopropyl acrylate by thiol-ene click chemistry under single-sided ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to enlarge effects. The reaction was proved by FTIR and Ellman method, the surface morphology was observed by SEM, and the mass loss at different temperatures in thermalgravimetry (TG) test illustrated the quantity change of grafting. The results demonstrated that the resultant fabric has good performance of moisture absorbing and sweat releasing, fast drying as well as outstanding antistatic and soil release properties.

Electro-blown spinning of hygroscopic breathable fabrics with patterned antisymmetrical wettability for visualized health state diagnosis

Haichen Yao,Hongkun Liu,Yihang Hou,Shuang Gao,Jiazi Hou

Perspiration conduction is essential for regulating the body's water and temperature balance. Significant advancements have been achieved in the field of textiles engineered for guiding water movement, thanks to their outstanding and practical control of uneven wetting properties. This progress carries important implications for preserving energy, promoting human well-being, and enhancing comfort. Nonetheless, current textile materials intended for sweat conduction are primarily focus on unidirectional transport of water, neglecting the air permeability during water transportation results in dampness and stickiness especially during heavy perspiration. In this study, a fabric with a tailored antisymmetrical wettability establishing an array of gas transport windows was fabricated via electro-blown spinning, endowing the fabric with long-term air permeability. It demonstrated an air permeability rate (APR) of up to 307.49 mm s −1 , a water vapor transmission (WVT) rate of 3133.76 g m −2 day −1 , and a water absorption rate (WAR) capacity of 2039.01 %. Especially, during the process of sweat wicking, the water infiltration restricted air permeability, however, the designed breathable window still maintained a high gas permeation rate of up to 214.61 mm s −1 , which was much higher than non-soaked commercial jeans and lab coat. Additionally, blueberry anthocyanins was incorporated into fabrics, acting as a portable sweat pH sensor based on colorimetric analysis, which was capable of monitoring the pH levels of sweat. When sweat shifted from acidic to alkaline, the anthocyanins underwent a structural transformation from flavylium cations to quinoid alkali. During the process, the fabric underwent a transition in color, changing from red to blue, which contributed to real-time monitoring of human body health performance in a non-invasive manner. This study presented a dependable method for creating intelligent textiles with patterned antisymmetric wettability, demonstrating significant promise for use in functional fabrics designed for individual moisture control.

Moisture-Wicking and Solar-Heated Coaxial Fibers with a Bark-like Appearance for Fabric Comfort Management

Jinhao Xu,Xuanxuan Du,Binjie Xin,Chiwai Kan,Yaqian Xiao,Zhuoming Chen,Mengjuan Zhou,Qingshuai Yan

Maintaining the human body’s comfort is a predominant requirement of functional textiles, but there are still considerable drawbacks to design an intelligent textile with proper moisture absorption and evaporation properties. Herein, we develop moisture-wicking and solar-heated coaxial fibers with a bark-like appearance for fabric comfort management. The cortex layer of coaxial fibers can absorb moisture via the synergistic effect of the hierarchical roughness and the hydrophilic polymeric matrix. The core layer containing zirconium carbide nanoparticles can assimilate energy from the body and sunlight, which raises the surface temperature of the material and accelerates moisture evaporation. The resulting coaxial fiber-based membrane exhibits an excellent droplet diffusion radius of 2.73 cm, an excellent wicking height of 6.97 cm, and a high surface temperature of 61.7 °C which is radiated by simulated sunlight. Moreover, the designed fabric also exhibits a significant UV protection factor of 2000. Overall, the successful synthesis of such fascinating fibrous membranes enables the rapid removal of sweat from the human body textile, providing a suitable and comfortable microenvironment for the human body.

Dual-bionic nano-groove structured nanofibers for breathable and moisture-wicking protective respirators

Yuyao Li,Yuezhen Hua,Zekai Ji,Zheng Wu,Jie Fan,Yong Liu

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic makes protective respirators highly demanded. The respirator materials should filter out viral fine aerosols effectively, allow airflow to pass through easily, and wick away the exhalant moisture timely. However, the commonly used melt-blown nonwovens perform poorly in meeting these requirements simultaneously. Herein, dual-bionic nano-groove structured (NGS) nanofibers are fabricated to serve as protective, breathable and moisture-wicking respirator materials. The creativity of this design is that the tailoring of dual-bionic nano-groove structure, combined with the strong polarity and hydrophilicity of electrospinning polymer, not only endows the nanofibrous materials with improved particle capture ability but also enable them to wick away and transmit breathing moisture. Benefitting from the synthetic effect of hierarchical structure and the intrinsic property of polymers, the resulting NGS nanofibrous membranes show a high filtration efficiency of 99.96%, a low pressure drop of 110 Pa, and a high moisture transmission rate of 5.67 kg m -2  d -1 at the same time. More importantly, the sharp increase of breathing resistance caused by the condensation of exhaled moisture is avoided, overcoming the bottleneck faced by traditional nonwovens and paving a new way for developing protective respirators with high wear comfortability.

Sweat Pore-Inspired Functional Nanofiber Fabrics for Sweat Management and Simultaneous Detection

Ruidong Wang,Chunsheng Guan,Xuening Jin,Jing Chai,Fujin Zhou,Ning Wang,Botao Song

Functional fabric with directional sweat transport and simultaneous sweat detection is highly desirable in daily life due to its crucial role in ensuring exercise comfort and promoting health. Herein, the inspiration is drawn from both the perspiration function of sweat pores and the backflow prevention feature of the surrounding solid skin to develop bioinspired hydrophobic nanofiber fabric. When combined with commercial cotton, this fabric enables rapid discharge of sweat through the sweat pore-like channels at an ultrafast speed of 240 g s −1 m −2 , while effectively preventing backflow around these channels to ensure highly efficient personal drying. The performance of the bioinspired nanofiber fabric surpasses that of five commercially available moisture-wicking fabrics by effectively guiding liquid transport while minimizing residual moisture accumulation on the inner side. Furthermore, a colorimetric analysis system is integrated into the bioinspired nanofiber fabric, which facilitates convenient sampling of sweat samples and detection of biomarkers in sweat such as chloride ion, calcium ion, and pH level. This innovative design based on the concept of sweat pores opens up new possibilities for developing intelligent fabrics, electronic skins, and point-of-care devices.

Continuous, Spontaneous, and Directional Water Transport in the Trilayered Fibrous Membranes for Functional Moisture Wicking Textiles

Dongyang Miao,Zhan Huang,Xianfeng Wang,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Directional water transport is a predominant part of functional textiles used for continuous sweat release in daily life. However, it has remained a great challenge to design such textiles which ensure continuous directional water transport and superior prevention of water penetration in the reverse direction. Here, a scalable strategy is reported to create trilayered fibrous membranes with progressive wettability by introducing a transfer layer, which can guide the directional water transport continuously and spontaneously, thus preventing the skin from being rewetted. The resulting trilayered fibrous membranes exhibit a high one-way transport index R (1021%) and a desired breakthrough pressure (16.1 cm H 2 O) in the reverse direction, indicating an ultrahigh directional water transport capacity. Moreover, on the basis of water transport behavior, a plausible mechanism is proposed to provide insight into the integrative and cooperative driving forces at the interfaces of trilayered hydrophobic/transfer/superhydrophilic fibrous membranes. The successful synthesis of such fascinating materials would be valuable for the design of functional textiles with directional water transport properties for personal drying applications.

All-fiber tribo-ferroelectric synergistic electronics with high thermal-moisture stability and comfortability

Yang Weifeng,Gong Wei,Hou Chengyi,Su Yun,Guo Yinben,Zhang Wei,Li Yaogang,Zhang Qinghong,Wang Hongzhi

Developing fabric-based electronics with good wearability is undoubtedly an urgent demand for wearable technologies. Although the state-of-the-art fabric-based wearable devices have shown unique advantages in the field of e-textiles, further efforts should be made before achieving “electronic clothing” due to the hard challenge of optimally unifying both promising electrical performance and comfortability in single device. Here, we report an all-fiber tribo-ferroelectric synergistic e-textile with outstanding thermal-moisture comfortability. Owing to a tribo-ferroelectric synergistic effect introduced by ferroelectric polymer nanofibers, the maximum peak power density of the e-textile reaches 5.2 W m −2 under low frequency motion, which is 7 times that of the state-of-the-art breathable triboelectric textiles. Electronic nanofiber materials form hierarchical networks in the e-textile hence lead to moisture wicking, which contributes to outstanding thermal-moisture comfortability of the e-textile. The all-fiber electronics is reliable in complicated real-life situation. Therefore, it is an idea prototypical example for electronic clothing.

Bioinspired fireproof textiles with hierarchical micropore for radiative cooling and perspiration

Liangyuan Qi,Wei Cai,Tianyang Cui,Bichen Lin,Zefan Feng,Jing Gao,Guangyong Jiang,Wenyue Guo,Chuanshen Wang,Bin Fei,Jixin Zhu,Yuan Hu,Weiyi Xing,Lei Song

Even though the huge potential in significantly decreasing the energy consumption for cooling buildings and the human body is presented by radiative cooling technology, there is still a long way to realize its real-commercial application, considering comprehensive performances, such as safety, comfort, longevity, and production cost. Inspired by the biological micro-nano structures of Cyphochilus, we develop a one-step, large-scale, and low commercial-cost method to prepare multifunctional composite textiles, with effective cooling, fire safety, and directional water transportation. The high emissivity (96.8 %) in the atmospheric window and high reflectivity (97.1 %) in the solar waveband are successfully achieved. When exposed to direct sunlight, composite textiles can achieve up to 5 °C below commercial textiles at a solar intensity of 750 W•m −2 . Besides, the directional water transportation and the excellent mechanical strength further improve the practical application. This work proposes a radiatively cooled composite textile to achieve personal thermal management and fire protection to meet the needs of specialty garments such as firefighting suits.

An all-nanofibrous Janus textile with directional perspiration for triboelectric nanogenerator and self-powered e-skin sensor

Ya Cheng,Jing Wang,Xiaofeng Lu,Ce Wang

Due to the increased demand for health monitoring and disease alarm, the self-powered epidermal electric sensors have attracted extensive attention, such as triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based electric skin (e-skin). However, the humidity accumulation at the interface between e-skin and skin will threaten the stability and reliability of the monitoring signals. Moisture absorptivity and perspiration are still great challenges that need to be addressed. Here, inspired by the internal structure of plants used to transport water, we fabricated an all-nanofiber Janus textile via a continuous electrospinning/electrospray technology, presenting a double gradient variations in the pore size and wettability along the thickness direction. Janus textile was constructed from the hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN)/hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) fibrous membrane with small pores and hydrophilicity , conducting Ag nanowire (NW)layer, and polyurethane (TPU) nanofibrous membrane with large pores and hydrophobicity . By utilizing the wicking effect of external HPAN/BNNS layer, the sweat droplet could be transported from the interface between the skin and Janus textile to the external environment, meanwhile, the returned sweat will be blocked by interior TPU layer to keep the dry state of the skin. Therefore, the directional moisture transportation was realized. As the near-skin side, TPU was used as the other triboelectric layer, the optimal triboelectrification output reached 78.10 V, 0.16 μA, and 3.31 W m −2 . Moreover, the damped Janus textile also exhibited an open-circuit voltage of 30 V, a short-circuit current of 0.051 μA, and a power density of 0.14 W m −2 . With the assistance of an adhesive layer , Janus textile e-skin could easily adhere to the skin surface, generating stable movement and physiological sensing signals. In short, this work presents a noval way to construct Janus e-skin patch with directional sweating and breathability for monitoring long-term real-physiological signals.
