Enzyme-powered micro/nanomotors propelled by biocompatible fuels generally show a weak propulsive force, which greatly limits their applications in complex biological environments. Herein, we have developed a novel and versatile approach to significantly enhance the propulsion of enzyme-powered micromotors by multilayered assembly of enzymes. As an example, multilayers of biotinylated ureases (BU) were asymmetrically immobilized on biotinylated Janus Au/magnetic microparticles (MMPs) with the assistance of streptavidin (SA). When the mass ratio of BU into SA and the amount of BU used in the assembly process are increased, the amount of urease immobilized on the biotinylated Janus Au/MMPs increased monotonously while the migration speed of the micromotor was augmented gradually until a saturated value. The as-optimized micromotors can be self-propelled with an average speed up to about 21.5 ± 0.8 μm/s at physiological urea concentrations (10 mM), which is five times faster than that of the monolayered counterparts and two times faster than that of the previously reported values. Owing to the enhanced thrust, the micromotors can move in liquids with viscosities similar to that of blood. In addition, with the inherent magnetic property of MMPs, the micromotors can exhibit fast magnetic separation and controllable motion direction by external magnetic fields. Our results provide a new pathway for designing high-efficient enzyme-powered micro/nanomotors and thereby promote their biomedical applications.

Water surface jumping motions of semi-aquatic insects are primarily rely on surface tension-dominated jumping mechanism to achieve impressive jumping performance. However, this mechanism faces an inherent physical constraint: the propulsion force must remain below the threshold required to break the water surface, limiting efficient momentum acquisition. Herein, we present a water surface jumping strategy that addresses the limitations of surface tension-dominated mechanism. Our approach allows the engineered jumper to achieve a record-breaking jumping height of 18 body lengths (63 cm) and take-off velocity of 100.6 body length/s (3.52 m/s). This strategy is built on three key design principles: (I) superhydrophobic body for floating on water surface, (II) light-weight, high-power actuation module capable of providing significant propulsion force within an ultrashort time, (III) well-engineered momentum transmission system for efficient kinetic energy transfer. The developed soft jumper based on these design principles advances the development of water environment related robotics.

Glutathione (GSH) is an important reducing molecule in organisms, and its abnormal levels are closely related to certain diseases. Thus, developing a fast and simple strategy to detect GSH, especially in complex channels such as blood vessels, is of great significance for disease prevention and diagnosis. In this work, a novel peroxidase-like catalytic activity tubular microrocket (FeO x /Pt/PEDOT) with efficient propulsion and steerable motion has been successfully developed for GSH detection. The microrocket fueled by H 2 O 2 exhibits strong propulsion for solution self-stirring and effective reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation to GSH color reaction. Combining these advantages, the catalytically propelled microrocket-treated sample can greatly shorten a half time of detecting reactions and realize efficient GSH detection. In addition, the microrocket shows effective directional detection of GSH in a designed complex channel due to its excellent magnetically navigation, which is of great significance in GSH detection in the microenvironment. This attractive catalytic microrocket has strong propulsion, effective direction control and excellent GSH detection performance, which shows great potential in biodetection and biomedical applications, especially in visual detection of vessels microenvironment.

Inspired by natural biological machines, lots of effort has been invested in developing artificially functional micromotors which can convert energy into movement for carrying out tasks in diverse areas. Here, we present a capillary microfluidic system with dual inner injections for one-step generation of composite structured polymer micromotors with two distinct cores of platinum (Pt) nanoparticle-integrated and iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticle-dispersed hydrogels. Because the flow rates of the prepolymerized fluids can be precisely tuned in the microfluidics, the diameters of the micromotors as well as the sizes and numbers of the inner cores can be well tailored to optimize the parameters of the resultant micromotors. When exposed to a hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) medium, the Pt-integrated cores of the micromotors could provide propulsion by expelling bubbles produced from the catalytic decomposition of H2O2, while the Fe3O4-dispersed cores could impart magnetic guidance for the micromotors. Benefiting from the close cooperation of these two types of cores, the micromotors were imparted with a strong propulsion and prominent recyclability for the delivery of both microscale and macroscale objects. These results manifest that this kind of composite micromotor has great diversity in various applications.
